S/W Newbie. If you have a moment - General Topics

Hello
In the begining there was the XDA, and then the XDAII, and now, in the post to me as we speak (I hope) is the XDAIIs.
Ive spent the past hour surfing around this site, and been quite amazed at some of the things you guys and gals can make these devices do. A recent change in company has moved me from my beloved hardware engineering onto software, nothing spectacular at the moment, editing .ini, .bat, .exe and a few other types of files. It has however got me interested in playing with my phone, but the problem is I don't know where to start, I see programs called mkrom which need to run on a unix like system (which I don't have) and RomKitchen ?
Are there any recomendations on a place to start ? whether its online tutorial or a good book you have bought from somewhere, and I mean books that start from the very bottom of the pile. Again, I know bits and pieces but nothing substantial in this area.
At the moment its more the applications for the today screen I`m interested in.
Any info will be much appreciated
All the best
Nikki

Welcome aboard Nikki. You can start here:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/wiki/FAQ
and move on from there. The forum has tons of info on what apps run best on our beloved XDA. Cheers.

mate, regarding "At the moment its more the applications for the today screen I`m interested in. Any info will be much appreciated"
there are loads of apps you can put on the today screen such as:
1) animated today - animation on your today screen
2) today launch apps - allows you to put icons / shortcuts to your favorite applications
3) weather
4) phone profiles
5) system information showing you amount of memory used, battery remaining, program terminator or switcher
6) nothing on your today screen...just the background pic/theme
7) world time which displays around 6 times zones
8) quotes
9) games on the today screen (e.g. baseball...but if you ask me i'd go for footy)
10) note screen for scribbling
11) let's see....oh you can also put a different kind of clock or date format
12) calendar or task summary
13) and a whole bunch of others...
no need to buy anything really; just hop on over to the 02 and xda websites...not to mention this forum as your means of gaining tons of info.
you can try these links:
http://www.freewareppc.com/
http://ipaqsoft.net/
http://www.pdagold.com/themes/
hope that helps. cheers then

the faq does not satisfy my needs!!!
dear bravo2zero the faq available does not explain everything
it only covers 2 old pdas what about the blue angel & what are the diffrence in the
Rom version
radio version
Protocol version
ExtRom version
Where can we find the tools to edit it ?? & what each tool can do ??
if i'm reading a post i have to open 6 or 7 windows at a time & follow links to many diffrent sites...
Where can we find all in 1 tidy place ??!!!
Thanks

Thats the beauty of it. There is no one single place since this forum evolves out of everyone's contribution. This isn't like a commercial website that offers downloads in a nice structured way. Like everyone else, you just have to read through a lot of posts to get to where you want to be.

Post specifics on why you think Dutty's ROM 6 ROCKS!!

I'm starting this thread as tons of visitors to the main upgrading Kaiser thread check out the details of Dutty's ROMs and then read everyone's Kudos, mostly and a few rants here and there on the subsequent threads.. but none of them give the actual specifics on What feature or Specific in Dutty's ROM prompted them to shower all the praise on the replies.. as after a while, the responses like "Dutty.. you never stop dude".. "This Rom ROCKS..." "WOW.. what blazing speed"... are not defining enough to WHY His ROM(s) are greatness at its best.
So, with my lengthy explanation above.. I Hereby share my specifics of Likes and Dislikes.... hopefully more will share theirs and would then benefit others to feel more comfortable to flash the ROMs.. Say what?!! here we go:
-All MS programs/software are now VERY noticeably faster to load. for example: Live Search 2.5 load time takes 2 seconds or less from time I tap to usable search box. I've clocked it. AWESOME!!
-TouchFlo-(CUBE): is working flawlessly. It takes a few seconds to come up and go through its 3 sides ONLY the first time you use it after a soft-reset. Thereafter its INSTANT to 0.25 sec for it to pop up with thumb swipe. VERY VERY IMPRESSIVE and useful, atleast for me.
-QuickMenu: Those who haven't used this utility.. its near PERFECT on what it s supposed to do and it actually does even more than that. The feature of tabbed navigation of Programs and Settings folder is almost 3 times as fast as they load up when you go via the regular start menu. Its worth having in any PDA.
-As I said above that All MS programs are noticeably faster, I meant specifically that as there may be other programs that load faster as well but nothing that I could noticeably tell the difference. So, this may be due to .Net 3.5 having most speed gains on MS stuff.
-Dutty has put in LOT of thought in organizing the various 3rd party programs in various user-friendly and intuitive folders. For instance, I like that he has created a folder called System Tools under Programs and has very thoughtfully added System related stuff in it only. So, all "tweaking" stuff is in it and hence its easy to just go to that folder and find that program instead of looking in the main Programs and scrolling 20 pages down. There is also a "HTC Programs" specific folder. Self explanatory.
-COOL COOL WAY-COOL feature: This is something I didn't know about that touchFLO has or maybe its a custom feature that Dutty has cooked, if you need to minimize any open application/program, all you have to do is swipe from middle of screen and down, very natural, and the program minimizes. WHAT AN AWESOME WAY TO GO TO YOUR TODAY SCREEN to access/open something else that you need.
-My downloaded ROM is AT&T ROM w/ TouchFLO, Dutty's No.6 and its the one with all and everything stuffed in it. Here's the not too bad part about this, I was at first leaning towards loading the "Lite" rom and then just adding what I needed individually... but that would've not allowed me to even find out about some programs that exist and Dutty has included. Besides, after loading: TomTom6, MS Live Search 2.5, Opera 8.65, Mortgage Calc 3.5, PCM keyboard .12 and few more - all on the main memory, I've still left with 122 megs. It says 122 of 140megs available.
I want to give more of this but am tired of typing... so will take a break and share more experience so far.. tomorrow. Hopefully more will share theirs.

G.W.E.N.I. IS HERE - Giving Wise Educational Noob Instructions

Noobs, Moderators, Members, lend me your eyes:
I come to bury redundant posts, not praise them.
The evil that redundant posts do lives after them;
The good is often interred within the thread;
So let it be with G.W.E.N.I. …………………….
UPDATE – G.W.E.N.I. Moved to Kaiser FAQ’s.
Read Below
The moderators were quick to add the information in this thread to the KAISER FAQ located at
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=KaiserFAQ#Gettingx20.Started
You can look through and read this thread if you’d like, BUT…
ALL G.W.E.N.I. LINKS IN THIS THREAD AND ALL NEWLY ADDED G.W.E.N.I. links ARE NOW in the KAISER FAQ which is located at the aboive link.
I wasn’t aware that ANYONE could edit the Wiki. Did you know that? Anyone? I have added about 35 NEW links to the Kaiser FAQ page in addition to what I have posted here. If you are familiar with how to edit that page, YOU CAN ADD YOUR OWN PROVEN SOLUTIONS. If you aren’t comfortable with that procedure, PM me your solutions and I will add them to the Kaiser FAQ page for you.
Also – I have tested the Kaiser FAQ page in terms of being able to successfully flash a phone with the fundamental functionalities, i.e. sound, camera, gps, email, etc. and can happily report back that all was accomplished without incident and done with exclusive use of the KAISER FAQ. If you get bored, try it yourself. I already have 3 times so I know that if you are reading this and you are new to flashing, go to the KAISER FAQ and The WIKI pages and SPEND SOME TIME READING THERE INSTEAD OF POSTING.
Everything you need is right there in that Kaiser FAQ – clear, concise and to the point. No commentary, opinions or suggestions – just questions and answers.

Everyone who is both new and seasoned has heard of the Wiki’s - The place to go for all of your questions on a given topic. They are the definitive resource for anyone looking to do anything to their devices. We also all know that most do not use these highly informative threads. Knowing that and depending on your perspective, it can either be good news or bad news. For someone like me, a first time smart phone owner and who also created this document, it is certainly good news as I now will now have the convenience of having most of what I need in one document. This should also cut down on A LOT of the redundant threads on here (I hope. Fingers Crossed) I won’t go into a long and protracted explanation. It should be pretty self explanatory.
This page should serve as a central repository for most things lazy. In other words, you don’t want to search, fine. The MODS and members alike do not want redundant questions either which are asked ALL THE TIME which pushes relevant threads down the list. Initially I was creating this list for myself, but I know others can benefit from it so it now has a dual purpose.
If anyone has their own known verified solutions which work and it’s not shown on my list, please post here and I will add it and update the thread and give credit to the person who posted the fix. Well, hopefully, the MODS will take notice and update the thread. I’m not sure I have that kind of access. The idea is NOT TO HAVE multiple pages in this thread. The idea IS to have ONE thread with one post containing many, many, many links to solutions that users would post redundant questions to otherwise.
I am not looking for the tier 4 level super hero technical support solutions. I am only speaking about the fundamentals. If a person cannot follow the basic instructions to flash their phone, they have no business on this forum in the first place. YOU HAVE TO POESSES THE APTITUDE AND THE FUNDAMENTAL KNOWLEDGE to be able to do this on your own. That’s why you post so many redundant questions….because you are unsure of yourself and KNOW that what you are reading is beyond your scope of comprehension. The business side of me is thinking that there is a VERY lucrative service available right here in front of the faces of those who are proficient in flashing.
Just because you got yourself a snappy new phone and have seen what others have done to it, doesn’t mean you should do the same to your phone especially if you don’t, won’t or can’t get your head around the technical side of it.
I AM SURE there are duplicates on this list worded differently. I did that on purpose because I know some of you process things ass backwards and sometimes you get lost in the syntax and will post a question because the thread didn’t match your problem exactly when in fact, inside of that thread was the answer to your question if you had only looked. And since these boards are written in English, the most powerful language in the world, whose subtle nuances will blow your head clean off, I included the same links worded a little bit differently – Make sense now?
I am certainly want to hear comments, suggestions, criticisms, opinions, etc. I am new and a noob to this board as well, but now I consider myself an accelerated noob. In light of this, if there are any MODS out there who wish to organize my list in some other fashion you think will increase its’ efficiency and impact, please fell free to do so. I have been working on this for a while and have just about had it. In my haste to finish with a few brain cells left, I may not have taken the extra care in sorting the links as orderly as I could have. I just wanted to get it up and running and see what would happen - If it would make a difference.
HOPE EVERYONE ENJOYS!!! It looks like because of the size of my posts, I will HAVE TO POST SEPARATE POSTS – SORRY
P.S. I have approximately 20 more links I am verifying and then will add it to the list.

Windows PSR.exe ...everyone's new best friend

Hi all, so I have found out about this F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C (yes all caps to emphasize it's fantacticness) called "PSR.exe" found in Vista and Windows 7
PSR.exe stands for "Problem Screen Recorder" and it does more than just that.
To begin:
Start > PSR.exe > Enter ... the show begins
I'm a PC, so I love this feature.
Videos are great, but they seem to always be inconvenient to make and edit, and frequently the video seems to contain many long waiting parts.
with PSR you can start it up, go through activities, and then stop it, and it saves your file as a MHTML file abd really low file size.
There is also more great things about this....
It records your activities and types them up for you
It highlights the area of focus automatically
It can be played as a slideshow
It saves as a zip file
You can still edit the shots and add comments
Now not only is this great for someone to record problems and show you, but the reverseis true...you can record "How To's" much easier and quicker and post guides.
Combine it with the Free Sparus EveryWan Personal edition WinMo Controller/viewer, and you can show someone how to cook, install, etc.etc.etc...
Take a look at this quick example
wow, thats nifty.

Interest for WisBar Advance Desktop

I'm interested to know how many people would like to see a WisBar Advance Desktop build for Android. Just let me know. Thanks!
+1
I think WAD was a very cool launcher in WMobile
Fantastic loved it on win mob

I loved wisbar!

Well, so far it's looking like there's at least a little interest. I'll get started.
Count me in a interested. Never ran wm without it!
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Its funny that you mention it. I just visited the wisbar forums thinking there may be something about it coming to android. Before switching to android I had purchased and used Wisbar and WAD. As good as WAD for WM was, it just never really worked perfectly. And thats only because of the limitation of WM and the hardware not WAD itself.
I think android is the perfect platform that would be ready to embrace WAD. I will be looking forward to using it in the future I think WAD for android will be what the long term goals of WAD for WM had striven for.
I'm glad that you finally decide to make an android version of WAD2(I've ask for that a long time ago in your forum).
I hope that this best wm UI will come on android devices very soon.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I use WAD (now 2) since a long time. I could not do without it. It is the only reason to stay at WM6.x.
If there would bei WAD2 for Android, it would be great and I think I would change over to Android too
Interestng...I also used WAD when I had a PPC device. I would be interested too.
I would be interested too... On WinMo Wisbar Advanced Desktop was amazing!
Thank you everyone for your interest. I've been doing some thinking about this as it will be a major step for me as I've been a long-time supporter of Windows Mobile (I've been around since PPC2000).
Given how powerful Android is, I can only think of one UI limitation at the moment: since there's no taskbar with an ever-present start menu, I'll have to make the app-drawer/launcher available on every page. At least, that's probably the best way to go right now unless someone has a different opinion/preference.
Another thing I was thinkg about: do you want a variable number of pages (being added through Menu > Add Page) or should I add a preference like some other launchers have to specify the number of pages?
These are very good news.
I can't wait to be able to use WAD again. I just hope that HTC Tattoo will be supported.
As for pages, I prefer the way of wm WAD2(pages added via menu).
So, I'm thinking about approaching this from a different direction than I did with Windows Mobile.
The first major change is I'm thinking about using a scripting language to describe how things are laid out and how they behave rather than just dragging and dropping items. The reason is two-fold:
1) This will give the script designer more control about how things look and how they work.
2) We won't run into the problem of shortcuts that open apps and widgets that are not installed on someone else's device (a major shortcoming of WAD2's).
So, the language would say something like: create a folder at x, y. This "button" will open it and this button will close it. You would also be able to specify an area where shortcuts could be added, such as "create a shortcut grid at x, y", but you would not be able to specify the shortcuts (this would be left up to the user who is using your theme).
One downside of this is that the layouts would have to be created on the desktop and then uploaded to your phone.
The other downside is that this would severely hamper the ability to launch specific apps using scripts. But, this is really a limitation of Android itself as, unlike Windows Mobile, not every device comes with the same core set of apps. And, for the apps that are included in most devices (such as the calendar), the intents to launch them may vary depending on the OS version (i.e. the calendar changed in between Eclair and Froyo).
I'm just brainstorming here. If anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to let me know. Right now I'm in the planning stages to see how close I can keep it to Windows Mobile, but at the same time implement new technologies in order to make it the most robust launcher around.
hells yeah man!!! i used it on my tilt for a while.....i think its ironic how similar android really is to winmo...just more refined but very similar in the idea
I found this thread quite late but i can just say +1. =)
I would really like to see Wisbar Adv Desktop on Android. Hope you are making good progress
I just finished asking your to offer support for android on your forums.
Feel free to plus one over too, guys.

I used to love making themes!!
Sent from my X10i
Awesome. Back in the days WAD was one of the best applications for WM, I've always been impressed by how much one could do with it.
I like the idea of creating themes on the desktop and then uploading them to the phone, because creating themes has always been kind of difficult and work-intensive.
You can map the app drawer to the home button or you might even be able to implement the ability to create shortcuts that open the app drawer.
Concerning the number of homescreens, I think Menu > Add Page is a bit more convenient and less likely to mess things up (since removing non-empty home screens could create issues, as it did with some launchers).

I just stumbled over this.... is it for real?
WAS with all the functionality will be ported over to Android? This will be the killer app taking all other launchers / home screen apps out of biz.
I am here to betatest!

Hopefully you can get the HTC Sense Widgets to work as well at least on HTC devices where this should not be a violation of copyright laws. I will gladly offer to borrow you a european HTC Desire for testing purposes if that is of any help.
I second your notiong of requiring a script language, but of course it would take one that is not laid out for programmers but also still understandable for regular designers. Search around here in the Forum for SlickUI and KiteUI, both which are still deep in the "maybe wel will do this stage" for some decent ideas on how people imagine their ideal design, and therefore gfgiving you an idea how much flexibility your framework needs.
Things that should really be in the to-do-list: radial icon menus. That means you assign say 6-8 icons to a WAD icon placed on the homescreen, upon tapping this the home screen blurs and the assigned icons circle around the pushed icon. This is a terrific way to organize similar apps IMO, much better looking than the folder blocks we have gotten used to.
WAD actually was one reason I found it very hard to aprt with my WM phone. Thie level of adustability had not been reached before. People who do not know what the heck I am creaming my pants about should use google image search for "wisbar advance desktop". It was a pure naked framework, allowing beasically every freedom any designer could wish / hope for.
Anotherr important thing to note is the touch features which have come quite a long way since WM6.5. You would need to extend the framework in order to allow rotating dials for menu control, swipe movements for changing screen left to right and vice versa.
If you could actually manage to pull the old stunt where you made an app run constantly on a "homescreen" it would be awesome. Imagine 3-5-7-whatnot screen with widgets laid out side by side, but a simple upward stroke brings you into the already preloaded browser (from which you return with the back key into the regular homescreen).
God, I am bursting with ideas.
As I said, I will beat test all days long if you need someone.

#Pinch to zoom and similar gestures will go a long way in allowing to extend the possibilites and ways the users can interact with the interface. Instead of an always visible appdrawer you could just use a gesture predefined that will launch the app drawer
Should we make a thread where all former WAD users and upcoming UI design freaks post their wishlists?

[Q] any way to view Sketchup (google) files on Android dev?

I already STFA and did not find what I was looking for. I was wondering if there is an application that will allow viewing of existing Google Sketchup files, editing/creating files - no - not so much, think that would be best done on a full blown desktop, One earlier post was asking about running a fully functional Sketchup, and I tend to agree that it would be too much of a tax on the processor and memory to be feasible for a mobile device. I also found the SketchBook program from AutoDesk which is designed for mobile devices but from what it says it is more like Paint in Microsoft Os's not a CAD type program.
Anybody know if there is anything like that available out there to be able to view Google Sketchup files? Thanks in advance for any information on the subject.
Sorry to wake up an old topic (very old) but I too am looking for such an app.....being a kitchen builder in my spare time I was asked a few times if I had any models on hand to show. And since I do all my sketches in Sketchup, well you guessed it....I can't show them on my tab....
Would be kinda cool to show potential customers how their kitchen might look like if I could just drop existing cabinets in place etc...
If you've already found something would you mind sharing with me? Very much appreciated...
