ext rom unlocker MDA Compact or S100 - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 Software Upgrading

where to download - or doesn't exist ?

If you want to get access to the extended ROM you simply have to do perform the standard debranding procedure on you MDA Compact (or whatever brand you have).
Here is how it works:
1) Do a hard reset.
2) Go through all the initial configuration stuff (calibration of touch screen etc.).
3) At some point you will be asked to tab the screen to continue. Right after that the contents of the extended ROM will begin to install themselves. The trick is to tap the screen and immidiately after perform a soft reset.
Once your MDA Compact is done with the soft reset, you will find yourself being the proud owner of a debranded phone/pda. The external ROM will be visible. If you wish to install some of the things on the external ROM simply execute the respective CAB files.
I chose to install the caller ID application as well as the camera patch.
Have fun,
Lars

Hello,
Ok but if you don't want to make a hard reset you can:
go to your windows directory and launch loadvdisk.exe
just for info total commander see this file but the explorer of file not

yes thanks - but still i can't edit the ex-rom

Right, I forgot to mention that you can unlock the extended ROM without a hard reset. However, this is as I see it not particularly useful since everything on the extended ROM has already been installed if you don't go through the debranding procedure. Also as the name Read Only Memory (ROM) suggests you cannot write to it, so it is fairly useless to unlock it if everything on it has already been installed ... except if you want to extract the content of it to post it
/Lars

I don't need to post - there is a lot already on the web. i need to change some preconfiguration with my own cab files for my company.
But it seams that there is no way to do this like with the 2020

How to handle ExtROM apps after BigROM flashing

Hello,
I read a lot about the big ROM flashing and did this on my XDA mini. Anything seems to work so I'm quite happy until now. One point of concern is still there... what about the apps from the ExtROM that I copied for backup on my harddisk? Using an XDA on the O2 network, we are talking about apps like Homezone and O2 settings.
If I understood the BigROM thing right, I deleted the ExtROM that was executed on a hard reset before. Therefore, after BigROM,
- no O2 app will be loaded after hard reset
- no autostarter, like in the O2 ExtROM, is necessary any more since nothing is loaded after hard reset
- after hard reset, all apps have to be installed once again
- best way to keep the apps secure and appropriate is install all apps once and frequently backup the whole setup
Is this the right way to look at the changes?
Another question about the O2 files: Besides the homezone control, are there alternative programs for the rest (Java, Today screen) or do I need the special O2 apps due to the settings coming with them?
Any help appreciated!
Yes you got it all right! After the Big Storage ROM the Extended ROM bit was deleted from the ROM. The space consumed by the Extended ROM is now available for you to use under the /Storarge folder.
Now, to install the required extended ROM programs just copy them to any folder on the PPC and click on them from the file explorer.
However I would suggest to install a program called CABINSTL. This allows you to run CAB files and install them in the folder of your choice instead of the default folder that consumes some of your precious RAM. I would install these CAB files in the /Storage folder, thus making benefit of the Big Storage ROM
The same applies to any other program you install. Always install it in /Storage. If you don't, after the Big Storage upgrade the only benefit would be of having some extra storage space. If you have an SD Card you don't need this space so might as well use it to install programs and free up the RAM.
If I use the cabinstl programme to manually install my Orange ExtRom files after a BigStorage install - even when I choose a different install location (eg. /Storage) the utility is still installed into the default location (usually somewhere in /Windows/).
I have the same problem. Also i pushed the option not to delete the cab file, but after install they are deleted I know i can make them read only, but i cannot do this trough explore of activesync.
It appears that some CAB files have their install location 'hard coded' into the file so it cannot or should not be changed.
I guess that this is to ensure that the utility works correctly so I don't suppose that there is much that we can do.
You can edit the CAB on your PC and define your own folder. However this is not recommended as the code for these programs may have some paths that are hard coded as well.
Anyway these couple of CAB files will not impact your overall RAM situation at all. On mine I only installed JAVA, MMS, Bluetooth and Camera patches from the Extended ROM. I don't need the rest.
Thanks for your help! So is it okay to install anything in the storage that goes there without complaining? As I installed PocketPlus there, Windows looked at it like on the memory card and displayed a message that installing apps there could become a problem during startup.
Thanks again and bye!

Magician: Read-only CABs get deleted after installing

Hi,
Hardware: Vodafone VPA compact/T-Mobile MDA compact (HTC Magician).
Problem: CAB files in /Storage folder are being deleted after installation - even if they are read-only!
This only happens if they are located in the /Storage folder. I did a hard reset and soft reset afterwards to get a non-customized device but the behaviour is still the same, so this doesn't seem to be a customization "feature".
Any ideas?
Use CabInstl to install cab's. It will let you choose where to install & got the option to keep the cab.

Thanks for the hint. It looks like a good alternative to the standard procedure. However I do need an automated mechanism (installing CABs after hardreset automatically) which can be used from the extended_rom/config.txt and I, lacking detailled information about cabinstl, doubt that cabinstl can be used in "silent" mode using commandline parameters. But I'll give it a try. Meawhile we implement a workaround.
thanks.

How do i convert Stock T-Mobile to O2 Equivalent

I have searched read and looked all over the board.
The problem very specific.
I have a stock MDA Compact with the T-Mobile Software installed.
I want to convert the phone to its O2 equivalent with all the bells and whistles.
Whats the best way to go about this?
Is there a UK O2 rom i can simply upgrade the unit with?
What extended Rom software do i install?
Thanks.
Backup your important data, hard reset your phone, and let the phone have its OS reinstalled. As you just finished the security (pin) setup page, soft reset your device (e.g. when it pop up a window saying that it will install etc etc software).
Get the O2 ROM from the xda-dev ftp, and install everything in the Exetended ROM, and you should have your O2 eqv.

I got the files from the ftp yes. Unfortunately the Extended rom is read only, how do i edit the attributes?
i can also install from an SD card, but i want to have these files permanently in the ext rom.
thanks again Hanmin
You should execute the O2 cabs from your sd-card. Or permanently flash you rom with the O2 rom to get them in your ext-rom. The ext-rom is read only & can only be written by flashing your rom or turning it into BIG Storage. To flash your rom to O2 you need MAUgradeUT_noid & the description from http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=MagicianRomUpgrade
Regards, M
Doh, of course how could i forget, the very definition of ROM, read only.
Well i executed the Autorun from the SD Card, but its installed all the T-Mobile stuff again, (which still resides on the ROM).
I would execute the cabs individually from the sd but im not sure which are meant to be installed for my network.
After a few errors running the upgrade previously your instructions have now worked.
albeit i had to put the phone in bootloader mode after step 5 and before step 6

I want to replace the tmobile rom with an O2 set of files (an O2 ROM?).
How do i go about this? ( ie Keep the ext_rom )
I gather its the same as flashing a big storage ROM to the phone excepts the nbf will have the O2 files i want instead?
Thank you all for your time

It's only possible if you find a dumped rom or a shipped-rom which is the version as the one you had before. Maybe your provider has a shipped-rom on its web-site? Or take a look at the ftp and maybe you're lucky to find one. If you find a shipped-rom it's easy, connect via usb & start the exe file. If you've got a dumped rom you need to change the header of the downloaded with your own device's header, write everything to sd & have the bootloader update the rom.

The have the autorun starting files on sd, you need to edit it a little. It got hard-coded path & filenames and some instructions to prevent userinput (thus locking the keys & keyboard).

Now you got me puzzled. Do you want the O2 CE-rom or just the ext-rom & keep the TMO network settings? Cause the CE-rom isn't much different for all providers, it's the ext-rom that does the customizing & changes the network settings.
So if you want an O2 ext-rom with TMO network settings I suggest you first write down your TMO settings for gprs, voicemail, mms & sms & then flash it to O2. You might even try to update the ext-rom only. It's possible to update to radio by supplying the radio.nbf only to the romupdateso I think it's possible to update the ext-rom by itself too. Can't remember the nbf name, but nk.nbf is your CE-rom & that makes only one left, isn't it.
You can use WinCECabmanager (10 trial executions) to see what's in all those cab-files.
Good luck to all of you, M
I think frantyk meant that he wants to keep the original t-mobile (mda compact) ROM while installing the customization (ext rom), such that the 'OS' is relatively the same while having O2 stuff in it.
Anyway, I think if you downloaded the correct O2 ext rom, you can install everything one-by-one manually, it shouldn't give any conflict. I'm not sure why, when you run Autorun, it install t-mobile stuff, probably the autorun is pointing to the ext rom.
You can unlock the the wizard ext rom unlocking cab, delete everything in your ext rom (MAKE A BACKUP FIRST), and copy the O2 stuff in. You should able to 'lock' the ext rom back in place. Then hard reset your device, you should have everything, including O2 stuff installed. I unlocked my ext rom before, but I can't remember if this is the one I used. --- IMPORTANT --- I've unlocked my ext rom with this cab before, but my device is a HTC Charmer, which is very compatible with Wizard. I'm NOT SURE IF IT WORKS ON MAGICIAN. You may want to look around the forum to find a ext unlocker for Magician, just to be safe.
The Magician ext-rom can't be unlocked, only flashed or turned into BIG Storage. Though I think you can flash the ext-rom only, the safest way it to flash the whole rom with an O2 shipped-rom. This will be the only way to get the correct ext-rom being executed after a hard-reset. Indeed the autorun contains a path & is unusable from sd without changes.
BTW not many people want the O2 stuff, I guess it's about network settings only. Which are on the web too, can't remember where :-(
M
What i want is the Standard CE software (ie no branding what so ever) which i think i have achieved with in flashing the phone with Shipped ROM WWE_11300_550_11200 - although it has the Qtek boot logo.
Im also using some of the Cabs from Extended Rom O2Mini_WWE_1.11.922
Why does this Ext_Rom not have and network auto config for O2 UK? Where can i get and Auto config cab for UK O2?
I want to use the phone mainly with an O2 Sim card, so i need al the O2 settings for GPRS and that, 2nd priority is having the T-Mobile GPRS settings cab for when i occasionally change chips but this is less essential that the O2 settings.
What does WWE stand for? My guess was XXEuropean?
Thanks
OK, unbranded CE is either the mentioned QTEK or any BIG Storage rom. Don't worry about the splash that can changed very easily.
WWE means World Wide English.
The network settings can be found here http://www.cctvsafe.com/support/phone_settings.htm
Cheers, M
hey.. what ports do you use for proxy, if you do use one..

No new OS after flashing.

Hi, I apologize for probably asking something that's been asked before (note: I've tried to find the answer but no luck) but I'm a little confused.
I've flashed a downloaded ROM a few times but the original OS keeps coming up.
I've got a IMate KJam and would like to flash WM6 on it. I'll detail what's I've done.
1. I've run lokiwiz and seleced 'C' to do the CID unlock, seems to have worked (some locked and unlocked files got generated).
2. I've downloaded nbd.v7.4 and unpacked it.
3. I've run the standard ROMUpdateUtility Wizard that same in the zip file but it gave me "ERROR [300] : INVALID UPDATE TOOL"
4. I downloaded ROMUpdateUtility_Wizard_NoID.zip and ran the exe that was in the zip file, the good news is that the KJam resets to 'rainbow' mode and seems to update the flash - bar goes from 0-100% then resets.
Once reset the OS is the original WM5 that came with the KJam.
What did I miss? Again I'm sorry is this is answered elsewhere, I've just not been able to find a solution myself.
Thanks.
step 1. Read more carefully the sticky post

You're not unlocked. You actually skipped the first and very important step of flashing back to an older ROM to get your IPL/SPL to an earlier version.
Follow these instructions VERY carefully and don't skip over any parts at all. Read through it once or twice before starting any of the steps.
(these instructions are for G3 devices, for G4, go here)
Good luck!
Thanks for the help guys.I'm managed to come right with the ShellTools app.
The only problem I've had with WM6 is that when I click on the contacts soft button (or click it from the menu) it starts loading then disappears. I can't access it at all. Everything else seems fine though. Any ideas?
I remember that fault occurring with some of the roms though I dont specifically remember which rom, possibly some of the 318 builds. From memory I fixed this by doing another hard reset.
Thanks for al the assistance. I've flashed the XDA Mobile 6 Release 2a and am very happy.
WM6 has much much better wireless lan support. With the stock standard wm5 my kjam wouldn't connect to my WAP2 configured network, now it work! Great job on packing the Roms guys.
On the matter of the the contact not appearing / working. The following would happen: Once WM6 was flashed, and a hard reset done the usual process of initialization took place, which included screen alignment, time and time zone configuration, setting of a password and then the part that seemed to be causing the problems, the setting up for a email account/messageing. I on numerous occations skipped the setting up for email as I won't do email on the device. Once 'botted' the device would work fine with the new ROM the only problem would be that when I pressed the 'contacts' soft key or selected it from the menu the contact 'application' would seen to start up but die or6 not appear. This means that the title/top bar would display the title of the contact application but would in a fraction of a second die / abort / crash.
I assume that the email / messaging part of the hardboot startup sets up something that is required for the contacts application. Just for reference I just setup the email/messaging details (name, email address, pop server, username & password). After setup I didn't check email once, I then just deleted the email account setup and the contacts app is still working.
For newbees, I recommend the ShellTool applications, it allowed a new Wizard owner and newbee rom flasher to get a new rom flashed very easlily. My Wizard was a G4 with the 'recent' IPL/ISL bits so I can't speak for G3 users.
Nice one guys, great forum. I'm verry happy with my WM6 kjam.

What does an hard reset on a smartphone ?

Hello,
I'm exeriencing some random lookups with my s620, i think because:
1) memory leaks on the apps I have to use
2) i used to install anything i found on the first week of use and thus bloated/corrupted something
an answer could be to do an hard reset.
i have also problems with my JVM and found a new version on a forum (here?) so my question is:
If I modify the contents of my phone (like /Windows) and remove, modify or corrupt some files, will an hard reset make my phone like on the first day
or...
hard reset is just cleaning user partition, if you modified/removed some files of Windows you are screwed ?
Thanks
It will wipe out any registry changes and everything else. Your phone will be reverted back to the same state as the day you bought it.
So at first boot, WM copies itself from firmware (write only) to work area (read write) ?
I have a small new phone operator that use special software to connect to their networks. Is it possible that they add this software/network preferences (not sure to find GPRS settings) "outside" the firmware and that my phone will revert to an unbranded HTC or is it more likely that they have a custom rom ?
Just to confirm: I install the new midlet manager, if it break everything I can ALWAYS revert by hard resetting ?
no most of windows is run directly from the rom
only chanable stuff like registry is in ram/flash you have write rights to
and yes you can always hardreset
