Hi,
This may be an odd questions but I am going to ask anyway. I have PDA2k that I use exclusively as my everyday PDA/Phone. However, on occasions, I need to use my regular cell phone without camera (some area of my job does not allow any gadget with camera). I have to switch the SIM card from PDA to my cell phone. I was wondering, is there anyway to have a "duplicate" sim card? In other words, have 2 sim cards with the same phone number so that I don't have to keep on switching the sim card? I don't care about stored phone book or any other info stored in the SIM card, just so that I am able to make and receive phone calls using the same phone number. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
A lot of operators sell DUO SIM's (notice the word: DUO, not DUAL).
A DUO SIM is a 1:1 copy of the original ie. for allowing people to have one in their on-board carphone and one in their handy.
The price is most of the time low (I heard of approx 20 euro one-off)
Duplicate SIM
I hope not too many operators offer the 'Duo' sim described here by edsub - that would be legalised cloning of SIM cards. Does your operator offer this 'customer friendly' feature, edsub?
PPCPassion: Trying to make such a 'copy' of your SIM could land you in trouble with your operator, so please do check up with them before you try/attempt to do this.
Cheers

Afaik ALL dutch operators offer duo sim's at a reasonable fee.
Like I said when you have an in-car phone (fixed in dashboard) and you have a handy phone this is the only legal way to use the two with the same number, though you cannot use them at the same time (switch one off before switching other one on).
Cloning a sim yourself is illegal and most of the time doesnt work with the new types of sims (due to security).
Does anybody know of a UK operator that offers the duo SIM service?
I have had a T-Mobile Duo Sim here in Holland, so I can imagine that TMO UK offers the same service. In Holland the service is offered only for business users (by TMO) and the price is €15,-. I can't say anything about the other providers.
I was very happy with the duo sim, one for my MDA and one for my Pub phone!

Hello i bought a G1 on E-bay and have a T-mobile sim card when i power on the phone boots and goes into a screen asking me for a :SIM network unlock pin.
Why should i enter such a pin as i am already using a t-mobile sim.
(phone is UK version i live in the Netherlands).
Any help would be appreciated
It's because you have Netherland T-Mobile SIM card.
It has different network id.
You have to unlock it first or use with UK T-Mobile SIM card.
Finish
Simply enough As long as your account has been in good standing for 3 months (you paid ur bill)
Call the customer service
ask for representative
then ask for your G1 Sim unlock pin
they will ask Why you need it (probably offer roaming plans)
simply explain you are leaving the country and would like to use your g1 with another (local) sim card. While you are gone. THEY SHOULD give it for free
if not a small fee attached to your account (15?!?)
((as for why it does it. Different region codes each country has its own))
Thanx for your reactions, the problem is now solved got the code of of E-bay.
Goingh through customer service t-mobile UK was gonna take to much time for me.
Case closed.
Hi guys,
Easy questions I hope:
I've never (yet) got into the area of unlocking phones and I would appreciate someone just answering a couple of questions to make sure I've got the general idea of unlocking.
1.
Am I right in thinking that you have to unlock a phone so that you can use a different provider's SIM card - instead of using one that is provided at purchase time?
e.g if I have an XDA supplied by O2, I could unlock the XDA and then use a SIM card from T Mobile?
2.
Do I need to unlock my phone EVERY time I put a SIM card from a different provider in it? Or once the phone is unlocked I do not need to do it again?
e.g. If I unlock my XDA, put in an O2 SIM card, and then go on a flight abroad, can I simply pull out the O2 card and pop in one from a local shop in a different country?
3.
Do I need to keep a record of anything before I unlock it?
e.g. Are any settings needed to be recorded BEFORE YOU START in order to unlock the phone ? Do I need to record information so that in the future I can put things back exactly as they originally were.
4.
Is there any differences between unlocking phones that have PAYG or CONTRACT cards? Are there any issues here?
Thanks for answers
Anne
In the USA a un-locked fone will bring more money used or new. and also has a wider seller/buyer market.
Once unlocked that's it. any sim anytime.
we have 5 fones between the two of us ( me and my better 1/2)
2 nokia's, a palm treo, a behold and a behold II (rooted 12/1/2009)
We have just our personal sim cards from T mobile (one each) we work weird, REALLY wierd hours. Some times our smart fones don't get charged or go dead while we are out. We just pop the sim cad into one that's got enough juice to get one of the "better" fones charged.
We both rely on our fones for our jobs.
A little know fact: in the USA it's a federal law. IF you bought your fone legitamatly. IE: not stolen. the carrier must provide you with the un-lock code in 24 hours.
The people that pay 15.00 or more to have a fone unlocked are either. Un-aware of that law. In a country where it's illegal to unlock a fone. Or knowingly have a stolen fone.
1: So yes you are right you need to un-lock the fone to use another provides fone with your sim.
2: You un-lock the fone once any sim card will work after that. AGAIN your right. (provided your in a country that has the same GSM 3g 4g network)
3: ALWAYS keep a written log of any "admin" #'s given to you for a fone.
the behold has a admin # that lets you turn on all kinds of things that are "off" out of the box. and you need that # everytime you make a adminastrative change. This maybe true with other fones as well.
4: I don't know about pay as you go. I would think once unlocked you would be able to use the fone pay as you go, so long as you had minutes on the sim installed.
I'm sure there are alot of people here that know alot more than me, and can help you further. I just got back into the cell fone game about a year ago and was out of it for about 10 years.
Things have really changed, then again they really haven't changed.

One thing of note is that just because a GSM phone is unlocked, doesn't mean it'll work with every carrier, as carriers will sometimes use different baseband frequencies (there are four, 850, 900, 1800, 1900mHz I think) and some phones only support 2-3 our of 4.
I'm in Canada for example, where Rogers and Fido support GSM networks (phones that use SIM cards), Bell and Telus use CDMA (phones that have ESNs programmed into them). So if I buy a Sony Xperia X1 for example, I have to be sure to buy the American version, as Rogers only supports 850mHz, and the European version of the X1 will only support 900mHz. So even if I unlock the european version of the X1, I can't use it on Rogers in Canada.
I'm guessing you're from the UK, where the market is even more diversified. 3 Mobile for example, can only use phones that support 3G (or HSDPA). A good place to look for such specs, after finding out what frequencies your carrier supports, is GSM Arena.
Hi,
I have a friend in the US that uses Verizon as his Cell Company. He does a lot of traveling.
So, 2 statements and then what I am looking for:
1. International Phone calls on a Verizon Phone is prohibitive. (duh)
2. Verizon has a GREAT International Data Plan.
Is there a phone that can run on Verizon (CDMA) but has a 2 SIM card slots that (unlocked of course) that can be used with a local country SIM Card (GSM). AND also allows one to use the Verizon SIM to allow access to the Data Plan. Crazy? I do not think so. Possible? I am not sure.
Any guidance is appreciated as it would be nice to have only one smart phone when travelling.
Regards and thanks in advance.
Jim
I believe the CDMA touch pro 2 has a sim slot but it has to be unlooked oli and cmonex have a thread that unlocks your phone for a small fee head over to the touch pro 2 CDMA forum to find out more
Thanks, I will check it out.
Problem: My partner has the Motorola Photon Q 4G Lte Phone on Sprint. This phone is unlocked software-ware wise and has the antennas to work on Vodaphone when we are overseas in a few months. But, sprint has physically soldered the Sim Card to the mother board of the phone so you cannot remove the sim and pop in a local sim when you get overseas, forcing you to use Sprint's prohibitively expensive international roaming service.
There is a guy who advertises on the web that he can modify the phone from a hardware perspective, but, his service requires mailing the phone to him in another country. I do not think I have the skills to do physical modification to a phone,
I see some software upgrade posts on here relative to the GSM radios, but, they are a bit to technical for me. Happy to have a hardware or software solution to this.
Goal is to be able to put a vodaphone sim or program phone to work on vodaphone, or similar carrier, while over in europe.
Can anyone help?
Well, you seem to already know of the guy who you can send the phone to...
So how did you miss this thread?
Good News !!! SIM CARD MOD IS HERE !!!
You can certainly try the mod yourself, there are some good pictures and information in that thread if you want to.
There is no software way around this issue. The only solution is a hardware one, as shown in that thread.
Having been a Sprint customer for years, I'm not that familiar with SIM cards, but I know that the S6 has one. For international travel, if I want to use local cell service, is it truly as simple as buying the right kind of SIM card and swapping it in?

If Sprint sells the S6 'sim unlocked', yes, it's exactly that simple.
Thanks. I'm not positive that it is, but I contacted them and they said they were setting my phone up to work in Europe while I'm there. I think that means it's unlocked? So I might try a prepaid card in it and see what happens.
Make sure you've made at least 5 min of calls before putting a Euro sim in it or you'll have to worry about the region lock too.
