Ring Tones - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 Accessories

Can I use MP3 music as a ring tone, if so how can I do it?

yup just put the MP3 file in the sounds Dir\ in your device
Sumpthin like this mobile device\windows

my understanding was that it played mid wav and wma files
add these to the /windows/rings folder and select in settings phone

It's a shame
I've tried this too and finally contacted the tech support guys at T-Mobile. It is only possible to use wav files as ring tones. This is a shame, because they are much bigger. To be able to use them, you should store them in Windows/Rings. I've created a couple of nice ones to last around 30 seconds (the maximum ringtime for most providers).
-Rocky Theme
-Eurytmics - Sweet Dreams
-Lumidee - Never Leave You
-George Baker - Little Green Bag (Resevoir Dogs opener)
As I do not understand how FTP works. I'll only attach one file. If you're interested in more, let me know.

appereantly, attaching didn't work either. just let me know if you'd like one of the ringtones. i can mail them.

Izzard: If you dont wanna use ftp, the files uploaded must be relatively small. Try to RAR any ringtone-file. maybe uploading via http will work then.

It's not that i don't want to use FTP, I just do not know how it works. In the "manual" it sais:
"Simply FTP to 'xda-developers.com', username 'xda', password 'xda' and put the file in the root directory (do not create subdirs)."
How do i SIMPLY ftp anything? Where do I log in, do I have to go to another site?
Even Rar-ing a 5MB ringtone will not make the file uploadable via http, I've tried it
So if you could help me out with the FTP part, I'll gladly post some ringtones.

the guys at T-mobile definitely don't know the difference between a file and a directory to tell you this..
the following is 100% correct:
you can use .wav or .midi or .wma(which is better than mp3) as ringtones for phone calls by putting the file in \windows\rings
you can use .wav or .midi as sms ringtones or as alarms by putting the files in windows root directory
we have talked a lot about this befor you have to search the forums before posting

No, you have to place it in \Application Data\Sounds. Afterwards it will be available in the list shown in settings for event sounds.

All that you must do is to put mp3 files in a folder called my documents, on device or on storage card an you will find in tones list
Not sure if you just kinda overlooked this, but while you can change your Ringtone for calls from the "Phone" option in settings, you have to go to "Sounds & Notifications" for text messages.
I just put my sound files in the root folder of the storage card and it shows up.
Must be a wav file, must be in windows directory for you to use it as a sms alert. Nothing else will do.
MP3 works as well - at least on my TP with stock HTC German ROM.

My mistake, you are correct. Had to put the MP3 in Windows>rings.
Must be new to WM6.1
If it's a long MP3 can you stop the music or does it carry on till the end of the file??

im using the fuze, with RRE 4.5 rom, with mine if i place my mp3 on the window root folder or in rings they work for phone rings, but not able to select on text message, so i did as you said, place my mp3 in application data\sounds and bingo they work. only downside is you have to hit the "end" call button. you can mute it with the volume buttons, so if a text come in and its in your holder you have to take it out and hit the end button. hope this helps

Why not find and employ the MP3 trimmer that comes on the Touch Pro in many markets - or edit on your desktop with any of the readily available programs? You could have it go on for - like 5 seconds, then quit.
Personally, I save songs for ring tones and use the jetson's doorbell for SMS and MMS and HAL from 2001 saying: "There is a message for you..." for incoming emails.

Sound assignment prob

Hi all, I'm new to this forum and also new to my smart phone. I have an HTC Elf 0300. I'm trying to assign a sound to Notification/ MMS downloaded. I've looked at the existing sounds available and tried to find the folder they're in via ActiveSync to no avail. I've converted the mp3 I want to use to .amr and put it in the My Ringtones and My Voices folders. I can access the amr file if I want to change the ringtone notification but not for the MMS downloaded. I can only assume that one can't use anything other than what came with the phone. If you know different, please advise, many thanks.

Put your tones in the main windows folder, you will see that many of the tones already available to you are in wav/wma format.
Thanx Timmy, that worked, one learns as one goes along eh, lol.

[Request] Froyo Music.apk-(diff)-mod to include Codecs included in Eclair Music.apk

I am hoping that someone is smart enough to figure this one out.
As some of you might know, for Froyo Music.apk, Google omitted support for certain codecs that were supported in previous versions of the .apk. Namely, for GSM 6.10 (I think that's correct) .wav support. For some unknown reason Google does not seem to be in any hurry to correct the matter either.
The reason this sucks so much is that for those of us that have home/work telephone pbx services or servers that send out voicemail attachments as these types of.wav files, we cannot listen to the voicemails on our phones within the Gmail app->Preview->Listen with Music Player. This includes Vonage, RingCentral, and many company pbx systems where the user cannot change the type of attachment that the VM gets sent out in.
You can read more about the topic and the issues here.... http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=4875
There are a couple work-arounds, one being a $4 app called Remote Wave. Another solution, in the US only, is to create a YouMail account, download the app and have the VM attachments forward to YouMail's dropbox service. But, that is giving up a lot of security, IMO.
My hope is that someone can figure out how to put the code that make this work in the Eclair Music.apk into the Froyo Music.apk.
Download the attached files and try to play it on your Froyo phone and see the error you get.
Can't upload .wav files as attachments on xda so the .zip is an actual .zip file with the .wav inside. So, you have to unzip it. The .txt file is just the .wav with the extension changed. So, just change it to .wav with Astro etc.
Thanks
I second this request!

Custom Ringtones in Mango

How do i create them??
Cant find anywhere that shows us who to use the updates
Need to edit an mp3 (and wma i think) file to be less than 30 seconds and set its category (in zune or file properties) to "Ringtone". Sync. Mission Accomplished.
Also, they should be nonprotected. Try using audacity (plus the LAME plugin for mp3 exporting).

Exactly what I said
OK, so have any of you guys actually TRIED To perform this, actually tried to follow his advice? I have and I don't get past 4 minutes and 19 seconds of this video. I will tell you WHY. In the updated Zune there is not OPTION ringtone or RINGTONE as was in his case for genre. Not only do you have to trim the ringtone to a smaller size but you have to change GENRE. AND RINGTONE is not an option available in my ZUNE. So what do we do NOW?
By the way, I use several phones and for that reason I need to use 3 Sweden for my smartphone, just so you know. AND to answer myself. Use a meta tagger editor to change the genre field to RINGTONE, that is the trick.
I've done 2 now and they work fine.
After you've trimmed and converted your file, add it to zune then edit the file and delete the genre and type ringtone.

I'm not allowed to insert links yet
Edit: or as you say a mp3 tagger.
On another note, anyone know if we can do custom text alerts???
Hello.
I have the same problem.

You don't have to choose from the list in Zune. Just type it in. The list is just a common set of genres, nothing more. -_-'

Custom ringtones are only for contact phone calls.
So we have to stick with the 10 anoying ones that came in the mango.
I think i will buy another phone with other OS.

I believe there is a hack or someone is working on a hack to let you use custom alert tones. Try doing a search, and you'll find something.
But otherwise yes, by default, ringtones can only be customized for phone calls.
No, thats just stupid. I'll explain it. This is too easy and yall are making it complicated. I use Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 to adjust my ring tones to the appropriate size. Just make sure you set it as a WMA file when you encode. As far as Zune goes, no, "ringtone" is not in the drop down list, so you actually have to TYPE it the first time. After that it STAYS in your drop down list. YES it works, I've got 20 custom ring tones on my LG Quantum right now using this method. I lost all my custom ringtones when I updated to 7720. You can also generally get the right file size and type from http://audiko.net/ you can download your ring tones for free, sync them to Zune then sync them to your phone. BEAR IN MIND IF IT IS OVER 39 SECONDS IT WILL NOT COME UP ON YOUR RINGTONE LIST ON YOUR DEVICE, SO U MAY NEED TO DOUBLE CHECK IT AND USE THE EDITOR. Oh, and NO. WE CAN STILL NOT MMS audio or video or set custom tones... ive been trying to figure out how to do that for months... still have not been able to find a hack. I figured out how, but it seems that part of the OS is read only... so I can not seem to over right it with my own tones... Why? **** if I know... ask MS.

[Q] Custom Key Sounds

I post this in my SGS4G Forum, but haven't gotten any hits, trying to broaden my chances of getting some help.
Ok, before i posted this i searched high and low and really couldn't find a strait answer. Here is what i am trying to do... I have a bunch of cool sounds... I would like to set these sounds as key tones... you know, like when i dial a number on my key pad.
So i got all the files in order, converted them to .ogg, and placed them in /system/media/audio/ui and renamed them key1.ogg key2.ogg etc.... Well nothing happens, i cant even play the file, it says its "unrecognized" by the stock media player and Rockplayer. anyone have any ideas?
I read somewhere that the "program" that plays these files will only recognize certain codecs or something, That is a little outside my AO (area of operation)....any help would be greatly appreciated!

I found this
http://www.droidnova.com/creating-sound-effects-in-android-part-1,570.html
However, i am not a Dev so this might as well be Japanese, any hints?
That link is relevant for writting an app that plays sounds.
The app that does this, the dialer already exists though.
This rather sounds like a codec problem.
If you can't open and play those files with the native android player on your phone, the dialer won't be able either.
Recheck the encoding on those sound files and try again.
they will play from the sdcard, but when i move them to the UI folder on the root, they wont... still an encoding issue?
Could be a permission issue.
There is no permission issue on the sdcard, as all files are accessible to everyone, but this doesnt apply to files in the root folder.
So try changing the permissions.
Changed the hell out of the permissions, which made the native player play the file.. YAY!! However......when i changed the file name to Key1.ogg from key1a.ogg, i press the corresponding number on the dialer...i get nada. so sound at all, i will play with permissions a little more, maybe change the format to a lower quality file and see if that helps... Thanks for the insite!
Well the filename has to be the same as the original one, CASE SENSITIVE mostlikely.
To make sure you have absolutely the same kind of file you could extract the original sound file and use a common player (i.e. VLC?) to check the bitrate, encoding, kHz etc.
I DID IT!!! WOO HOO.. what a pain in the ass! LOL I made the files smaller... less than 16hz and 92kbps.. then sent them all to drop box... copied them to the ui folder... THEN...I renamed the originals...then renamed the new ones.. giving them god permission. It worked!! Wish i was more of a Dev.. i'd make an app to simplify it...took about an hour once i got the hang of it....
