Are there any Chinese GPRS/GSM users in the house? - General Topics

Each time I go from New York to China (Guangzhou and Shanghai/Nanjing) I struggle with phone and internet access. My NY T-Mobile account works in China for GSM & GPRS, but the voice (GSM) is VERY expensive. GPRS is not too bad since I mostly send and receive email but I can only send email to addresses on my ISP account.
(such as [email protected] OR [email protected]) I cannot send to outside email accounts.
Is this a setting I need to change? I have tried 2 outgoing mail servers, the Myemail.T-Mobile.com and my ISP's outgoing server.
The best option for me is to have a local prepaid sim card for Guangzhou
that offers international calls, local calls and GPRS access. Unfortunately it is a struggle to explain this to China Mobile or China Unicom staff.
Can someone steer me in the right direction. Who is the best and least expensive carrier? How do I explain that I want GPRS, Not WAP.
What are the correct settings such as:
APN
Outgoing mail server
Any other important setting I will need for GSM & GPRS usage?
I can usually solve these problems after a full day of running around
between mobile shops and offices. However I would like to put together
a comprehensive list that I can keep and post on this forum to help others.

China use gsm900/1800/1900
im in china gprs if u need i can tell u setting.
If u wanna use gprs in china / u can choose china mobile(only one)
China Unicom have cdma 1x not gprs

Thanks for your reply. What part of China are you in?
Can I buy a prepaid sim card that lets me call and be called locally in China, call back to the USA and use GPRS? Where do I buy this sim card and are there any special deals? Can you list any settings I'll need for GPRS.
If you could list this info here, it would be a great help to me and the XDA community.
Thanks
Joe

O2 payg gprs full internet access now available.

Here is an sms I received yesterday.
O2: Using Mobile Internet via GPRS is FREE until June 10th 2004. For info on New Mobile Internet charges from 10th June call 2202 free from your mobile.
It seems it will be costing about £2.50 per megabyte for full gprs internet access.
Afraid Not,
I spoke to Technical Support about it yestersay, and they were Adamant that the PAYG service was still only WAP and MMS, and tests seem to confirm this!
Yes it is £2.50 a Mb, but will not allow full Internet access on the XDA,

Hi there,
Thank you for your email,
You should be able to configure the device by choosing from the Active screen - My XDA, Connections, chose Pre-paid, GPRS, UK, Finish. This should then restart with the correct settings.
If this doesn't work, please provide your mobile number and we can check if you are provisioned for the correct services. Please note, that Pay and Go customers will be unable to use full web access, only GPRS WAP and MMS services will be available for you.

Paul

Using GPRS on someone other than o2

Hi,
I've just moved my XDA 2 away from an o2 contract to Pay As You Go with Tesco.
I can't get my GPRS to work and after contacting Tesco several time, they are now saying that you cannot use GPRS on an XDA 2 on a provider OTHER THAN o2, because of some pre-set settings that can't be changed. I can view pda.o2.co.uk when connected to GPRS, but that's it.
Is this true? Is there a workaround? Does anyone have GPRS working on Tesco or any non o2 provider (if they were originally on o2)?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Andi
i can't speak directly for Tesco's pay as you go service, but I have had no problem accessing GPRS on my XDAII, which was bought under a 1 year contract in UK, after moving to Malaysia (on a local M'sian carrier).
what i do have trouble is, however, is setting the gprs up for mms services. Apparently on my cousin's xdaIIs bought here, mms services require connection to a separate gprs account, which can be specified on his mms settings but not on mine. and we can't seem to find anything different in the changeable settings! o well. i have no one to mms anyway...
somynex if you want help setting up your mms I can gladly assist. Its accually really easy. You have to set up your proxy on my work network. Just im me if you want some help.
Mike
No-one have any ideas? I think I'll likely move to o2 pay as you go.
Thanks

Web and Walk on any 3g phone?

Hi,
Could someone tell me if I could simply put a T-Mobile sim with web and walk tarrif into the trinity or any other non T-Mobile 3g phone and still get free internet access and msn messenger. Or do I specifically have to use their phones with their own version of browsers and messenger.
Need to know this before deciding which network and phone to go for.
Thanks
I have the same question
I have a SPV-M3100, but I don't know how to get connection settings for
T-Mobile Web n Walk service.
I have searched the forum, but no clear result.
Thank you first if anyone can have an idea.
here in the Netherlands you could do that. You should be able to get a sim-only with w&w and put that sim in any unlocked phone. This is not a logical choice here in the Netherlands since we get great deals when combined with a T-mobile branded phone. T-mobile the Netherlands is promoting some nokia phones as well...(N73)
Shouldn't be a problem - I've used my WnW SIM in several WM 3G and non 3G phones. Just set the apn / usrname / password to
GPRS APN address: general.t-mobile.uk
Username : user
Password: wap
and left everything else at default.

wm6 and roaming

just wrote bloody long post and pc crashed in internet cafe-
so gonna write a short one now.
i am running darkforce wm6-very stable does what i want it to do in the uk
howvever in stockholm at present and cannot browse internet or send/recieve email for what will amount to the same the problem.
the handset is obvioulsy unlocked and with t-mobile,but when abroad last year with different wm5 roms -no problems everything worked fine, have spoken to t-mobile who are about as much use as a choclate tea pot
1) when trying to connect to internet-it does nothing-if i force the connection and get it use the csd t-mobile -i get 'failed to dial' message
2) when trying to retrive pop3 email(no exchange server involved) get new message about extra charge as roaming and then it try to connect for a spilt second before displaying error syncronising
i can roam all networks pick everything up?
please help people
hello,
I've no probleme with data connection when roaming my provider is SFR (france) and roaming provider is proximus (belgium).
Have you trying with another roaming provider ?
as many as i can try telia, vodafone se ,iq etc etc
no joy-beginning toi think it is to do with t-mobile
also without stating the obvious, as and when i can find a free wifi-everything works
are you having prob only with your data connection?? back in uk (?) were you using 3g or gprs and lastly in setting/phone/ is the band set to wcdma (3g) or gprs
in uk had set data to auto all have tried every over type- but still does not explain why it worked seamless before -it either is something within the wm6 rom(i doubt) or t-mobile(proable)
but as i m traveling as soon as i get back i would like to get to the bottom of it.
It may not be your Universal - it may be your provider
Did you inform T-Mobile that you were going overseas? They need to activate international roaming on your account...
I've seen this problem before (working in a phone shop and all...), a customer from country xxxxx can't make\receive calls - because international roaming is not active on their account
Roaming worked on WM5, now not on WM6
Hi
I had similar problems. While Roaming previously (From SA (MTN), roaming in Mauritius (on Cellplus and Emtel) under WM5, I had no problems with SMS (text) or data calls.
Recently upgraded to WM6 (Laurentius' V7 VideoCall) and when landing in Mauritius last week, I could not send SMS(text) or connect data. It picked up the network. I did not test normal voice calls, since I usually dont make any while roaming. I simply used my sim card in a different handset for the week, but it was very frustrating, since Ive come to rely heavily on data access while travelling overseas (for email, skype, etc)

Could also be Radio Ver
Hi all, Could you all edit your posts and enter your Radio SStack Ver ?
And if you can remember what Ver you were on when it used to work on WM5.
As stated in the post, the 1.18 Stack had updates for roaming, I haven't had a chance to test it myself, could anyone provide feedback on roaming with 1.18.
Cheers,
Beast
dark force(excellent) and radio 1.15 will try upgrade as leave country in a few weeks
I roam between China, Hong Kong and Taiwan a lot. It appears data works better with some local service providers only. So what I do is when travelling to a new place, know which local providers data network 'roams' better with my China Mobile, by manually selecting, and trying, one by one, on the phone control panel, network selection part. Once I found one that worked, then I manually fix to that one.
Now everytime I travel to a different region, I just do, phone control panel->network->manual-> choose the known good one.
I hope this works in your situation and network providers.

[Q] Any interest in a 3rd Party GAN/UMA Service for Android?

Hello XDA-developers,
I have developed my own GAN/UMA Gateway that runs in the cloud, similar to T-Mobile's WiFi Calling and Orange's Signal Boost.
With this service you can point your GAN/UMA Client to my Gateway and I will pass the calls to and from an external SIP Provider. You no longer have to be with Orange-UK or T-Mo -US to get UMA Service!
At the moment my network is not connected to the SS7 network so unfortunately you can't just simply roam onto it. However I do have a way to register existing SIMs with my HLR. Currently this means taking the SIM out of the phone and connecting it to a PC via a SIM Card Reader. I'm very interested in talking to anyone who could make this run as an App on the phone.
Once the SIM is registered in my HLR and the UMA App is told to go to my Gateway (there's a secret menu to do this) then the phone will register and Location Update on my network.
When it is on my network, it is no longer reachable from the Operator's network, again because I can't get access to the SS7 network. I'm very very interested in talking to anyone who thinks they know how I can access SS7. I have the SS7 stack, and the skills but not the access.
Anyway for now, I can assign a UK national number to the SIM so it's reachable via the PSTN. The MSISDN number can be call-forwarded to the PSTN number (not a great solution, but OK for now).
The cost of making calls will be whatever the SIP Provider charges. (Currently I use sipgate.co.uk) I plan on just charging a low fixed monthly fee to cover the costs of providing the access.
What do you guys think? Is this something that people are interested in? I realize without a roaming service it's no better than a Skype/VoIP type service but potentially it could be a very good service if I can get the SS7 side sorted out, it's an alternative to roaming when abroad and provide better coverage at home for many people.
All comments are welcome, thanks for reading.
AlanE
umm yes please!
too bad so many people passed over this thread. what if there were actually some decent data-only plans...
Would I be interested? Hell yes.
I'm currently using a Galaxy S2 on Orange with their Signal Boost app and I was crushed to hear that Orange are not offering UMA on the S3. There's no point in me having an expensive phone that I can't use at home (or most places near home). Third Party UMA would be a small miracle for me.
Interested
Hi Alan,
We are interested in talking to you about this. Can we PM?
