maybe this one of cause restoring a backup of a whole xda1 to a xda2 may not be the best idea
maybe you should read this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=6517&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
or this tool
http://www.yorch.net/apps.htm
not sure if it works for restoring on the xda2 though

Try this:

Jeyo Mobile Companion. It uses a similar technology to the Smart Phone Studio software which is no longer available. You'll be able to backup your SMS messages and then restore them to a different Pocket PC or Smartphone.

Reading PIM data on a computer

My XDA Exec finally went the way of the dodo, with the screen getting totally knackered. Now I need to migrate all my contacts to a new phone. Fortunately, I had a backup of all my contacts from when I did a hard reset and I have them in a file on my computer called "pim.vol".
Does anyone know of some software that can read this file? I can't just transplant it onto a new handset because I'm not planning on getting a PocketPC again immediately.
It took me a while to work out how to use that emulator (after which I found out I didn't need to download it as I already have Visual Studio 2005...) but I managed to get my contacts data visible on it.
Thanks very much

Hi,
the next alpha release of SMSmanager is here. It's not finished so some things don't work. However, I'd like to get it tested and have some feedback before I go much further.
I have attached a zip file. Unpack it. Copy the cab file to your phone and install it on the device. (not the storage card). I had to do a soft reset on mine before it appeared in programs. Do not start the application.
Then install the desktop application and launch it.
If i've done my job right the desktop application will launch the pocket application and they will start to chatter to each other.
All your texts and contacts should appear on the desktop.
If you have any problems email me [email protected].
I've tested it on an Orbit and an Exec.
Regards

Backing up SMS

Hello!
I've searched all the threads about that and haven't found anything that would pick my attention.
Is there a way to back my SMS up on my Vox without installing Outlook on my PC (Jeyo, hate Microsoft crap)?
Perhaps they are stored in a file? Or there is a freeware app that does it...
Thanks
Depending on what you mean by "backing up"..... this may be of use....

It's freeware, but was originally written for PPC devices; the author has made a SmartPhone version, but is not sure if it's 100% - this is your opportunity to test and to offer suggestions for future enhancements
HTH,

Howdy
I didn't want to make a new thread, so I posted it in my last one.
How to backup & restore pim.vol and cemail.vol files easily? There are errors due to access voliation.
I managed to copy pim.vol to storage, but when I restored it to phone memory after hard reset,
my phone couldn't start and I had to hard reset again. Is there anyone to help?
Thanks

HELP!!!

MY TMOBILE WING LCD IS CRACKED...THE SCREEN IS COMPLETELY WHITE WITH TWO BIG 'pressure points'...THE PHONE SEEMS LIKE ITS STILL FUNCTIONING AS FAR AS MAKING VOICE AUTOMATED CALLS "CALL ANGEL" "CALL HOME"...BUT I CANT SEE/HEAR ANY INCOMING CALLS OR TEXT...IS THERE A WAY TO REPLACE THE SCREEN OR DO I NEED TO BUY A NEW WING??? IT WOULD TAKE FOREVER TO TRANSFER ALL MY DATA i.e CONTACTS/PROGRAMS/FILES...PLEASE HELP
Yes screen can be replaced, try to find service company for HTC somewhere around your location. There are some pictures of HTC communicator dismantling here. The screen is a separate part. Your phone (HTC Herald) should not be an exception.
awesome...thank you i was afraid i was goin to have to replace the entire device...

I think it should be possible to get data off the device via active sync ansd some backup program. If you use something like my mobiler you can even emulate your device screen on PC to be absolutely sure you will not lose any data even if they repalced the device entirely. Good program to backup messages/contacts is PIM backup - does not need install - just one .exe.
EVEN BETTER...im gonna try running the 'my mobiler' on my pc and see if i can just /view tranfer the data that way..

sorry for double post. My mobiler runs automatically on ppc so there should be no need to use the screen for install. Let me know if it works for you.
how do i use/download the PIM backup if my screen is blank, can i run the exe with the mymobiler on my PC?
pim backup is exe file - you can copy it to your device via active sync/windows explorer (it does not need to be installed in any way, just copied). then you can use my mobiler to work with your device - you need to find the Pim backup exe with devices's explorer and run it. it backs up to the memory card by default. should be straightforward.
You can download pim backup here.
THANKYOU KarhU...you have no idea how much help you have been...i will let you know the results
You can also use full fledged backup programs. They can backup everything - even your programs and so on. PRoblem is that they are paid, and need installation (should not be problem if mobiler works).
If mobiler does not work you can copy the PIM.vol from the root directory of the device to your PC - this is a database containing all of your PIM data. Restore from it is fairly simple too.
Guys
I need help as well. I'm using HTC_Tytn with Rom Version : Schap's 3.60a, ROM Date : 08/09/07, Radio Version : 1.47.00.10 . Protocol Version : 32.80.7020.20H ExtROM : 3.60.20070822. I'm having a problem with the bluetooth issues whereby it always can be turn on ( you need to restart and it will automatically turn on) , phone siddebly hang ( when received call) and another major issues is I can't do Video Call ( I can see the other party but my front camrea is not working). Can anyone help?? Should I upgrade anything or maybe there's another ROM that you guys may suggested?
Someone I know had a TMO MDA given to them with a cracked screen. They went directly to TMO and was quoted $100 for the screen. Just stop by a TMO store and ask - even if they tell you you're boned, you're only out the $400 dollars for the gas you burned to get down the block and the 10 minutes it took.
Or just try calling 611 from a TMO phone and ask them. Never hurts.
how do i retrieve the data 'backed-up' by the PIM exe...everything is running great (mobiler, sync) i ran the PIM exe from mobiler and it took a while but finally said completed...so where or how can i view the data (messages/contacts etc) saved or backed up??? thank you again for all your help, i know these are problem simple questions that everyone knows...

PIM Backup saves the backup file to the root directory of SD Card by default. File name is PIMBackup_date.pib. This is a place to look. You can also backup all of your programs/settings etc. with commercial backup utilities like SPB Backup or Sprite Backup - these can restore your device to the exactly same state like before e.g. when you do the Hard reset. Note that PIM Backup does not save MMS messages.
can't connect
i have the same problem with my wing. i've downloaded my mobiler but when i install it nothing happens. it refuses to connect to my phone. active sync (or windows mobile device center, whatever they call it on vista) is working just fine so i know the link with the phone is good. any suggestions? PLEASE HELP!!! my life is on that phone.

In which file is the call history stored?

Hi,
I would like to know in which file the phone (mine is an HTC Artemis P3300 = XDA Orbit with WM6) stores the call history (outgoing and incoming numbers).
I know that there are tools for exporting this data, but they are of no use for me now because my phone's display broke a few days ago, and all I have are the files that I could copy to my PC via ActiveSync (all except some that were locked).
If I know which one is the correct file, I could copy it to my new phone and retrieve the call history from there.
Thanks

I think all this is stored in PIM.vol, but I may be wrong.
I have written an app to read from it only, but all that is done via the API on phone.dll.
On the other hand, have you tried an app such as MyMoblier, it allows you VNC style access to your phone, you should then be able to install a product like PIM backup and backup you call logs.

Thanks!
Indeed I tried to use MyMobiler to install a backup program, but since MyMobiler was not installed on my mobile phone before, I never got it running. For a successful installation you have to perform some action on the touchscreen, but if the display is dark your chances are rather bad.
Happily, with the help of ActivSync I managed to save many files. And pim.vol was within those. I restored that file to my new phone and voila, my call history is there again!
By the way, that app that you wrote for reading pim.vol, where can I find it?
Cheers

I never released the App, it has no UI output.
If you can code, I suggest you have a look on MSDN for help writing the app.
