I am a little confused here. I have a XDA II on the O2 network and it shows two connection options for GPRS.
a) Mobile Web GPRS
b) WAP Network GPRS
What is the difference between them ?
Also, once I have connected to GPRS, there seems no option to disconnect from it, I usually end up doing a soft reset.
I am being thick here ?
web is the real internet and wap is trough the WAP protocol a limited form of internet

Push the red button for 5 sec. It will disconnect the GPRS connection.

When I cradle my XDA, and then launch IE, it tries to use the PC's Internet connection instead of the XDA's internal GPRS. Is there a way to force it to use the XDA's GPRS to access the Internet instead of the ethernet connection on the PC when cradled?
I am not sure but I have the opposite problem. My XDAII always connects to GPRS rather than via my PC when cradled. Maybe we should compare settings. How is yours configured?
i recall the xda manual had some stuff about grps while places in the cradled
The answer is to change the settings in your PC ActiveSync. Go to Options, Rules and at the bottom is a section called "Pass Through". If you select "Internet" when your XDAII is cradled or synchronised via USB/IrDA/Bluetooth, Pocket IE will connect via your PC's internet connection. If you change the setting say to "Work" then Pocket IE will use the GPRS connection instead.
Hope this helps.

Hi all - i have my xda mini s setup to connect to the internet and collect my exchange emails all works fine.
i use it at work + at home a lot and both locations have a wifi broadband network.
i would like my xda mini s to only connect to GPRS for web browsing and emails when a stored wifi network is not in range (eg when im on the road)
Is it possible to enter in this preference anywhere? thanks in advance for any help
Actually, as far as PIE or any program that connects to the internet is concerned WiFi takes precedence over GPRS by default.
The problem is MS push mail. It forces GPRS even if WiFi is connected. If you try to serf to a graphics heavy site wile connected to both GPRS and WiFi you will see the speed difference.
I am not sure what the logic behind this MS stupidity is, and unfortunately I don't know of any cure except deleting the GPRS settings.
hi - and thanks.
damn.
well i did have a qucik test i went on the web and it seemed to be connecting to gprs (while i was already connected to a wifi network)
i will have a play.
There's one other thing I forgo to mention:
When connection to WiFi make sure you select the correct value under "This network connects to".
I assume your GPRS settings are under My ISP and that is what's selected in Settings->Connections->Connections->Advanced->Network selection.
You should then select "The internet" for the WiFi network.
Right, Iam in an area where I can use a Wi-Fi network. How can I make sure that any app using an internet connection uses the wifi when available and not the 3g or whatever other connections can be used which come under my data connection part of contract?
i think the priority goes from: active sync (highest) -> wifi -> 3g -> EDGE (lowest)
as long as you are connected via wifi, it will not use your 3g or edge
Is there any utility like this?

Is there any utility, which will do the next:
If any program want to conect to internet it will ask me first how do I want to connect: Wi-Fi, 3g, GPRS? And I will choose...
When I´m browsing the net with wireless on I think it uses 3G so I turn "mobile radio" off which fixes the problem. I atleast think it uses 3G but I will try again with both on.

I'd appreciate this behaviour too. I'm currently using Modaco NoData, which can deactivate data connections, but this isn't very elegant solution.

Mine isn't working that way. I've connected to a wifi connection, which is a working one, but when i try to update weather, it still uses EDGE.

Make sure that your wifi connection is set to "internet" and not "work". Under connections, click WiFi, press and hold your wifi network in configure wireless networks, click edit and make sure connects to "internet" is selected.

"..data plan.."??? what is this?
Can you tell us what we should do within Polaris en laptop?
thanksss!!!
A data plan is something like this: http://shop.vodafone.co.uk/mobile-phones/price-plans/home/
In short it's mobile internet from your mobile carrier...
Once you got this, you'll have to configure the ISP settings on your PDA with the informatiopn provided by the carrier...
For example:
Modem type: Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G)
APN: stantardnet.vodafone.net
user: none
password: none
One you've done this, just start the Internet Sharing app, select the connection you've configured, plug in the USB cable, and you can use it.

I already use a data plan (Umts T-mobile) at my Polaris, since 1 year.
when I connect my USB-cable (activeSync works well) and I start 'programs/internet sharing': I see as chosen: 'USB and T-Mobile data plan'.
But my laptop doesn't try to connect to internet through my Polaris :-(
So, I must change something within my laptop for connection settings?
great, you have a data plan... can you browse the net on your PDA with nothing connected to it?

Yes I can browse internet on my pocketpc.
The problem now is how to enter this inter-connection (to extern websites) from laptop
great... now forget the active sync... open the Internet Sharing app... tap connect, connect the PDA to the laptop, and start browsing...
I can't put it more simply because it won't get simpler then this...

Good Afternoon/Morning/Evening,
how is XDA today,
at work today i have noticed a slight annoyance, we have a large office here that has 4 Wi-Fi Access Points, that overlap with the Same SSID, for seamless transition however if i leave the wi-fi zone for more than 3 minutes it connects to my O2 mobile interenet connection
and when it gets wi-fi back it maintains both wi-fi and the O2 mobile internet connection
is anbody aware of an app or tweak that will disconnect a mobile internet connection if wi-fi is connected, and only connect to O2 mobile internet if wi-fi isnt available?
PLEASE HELP VERY FRUSTRATING

try bandswitch 2.8 , its the only solution so far that always closes idle connection. when you go back to wifi your gprs/3g connection will become idle
