In case you hadn't seen it thought I'd share. €399 (*standard classic price in Europe so strap is FREE). Should be picking mine up in next few days.
DETAILS
Samsung is a company to watch through the fashion deals to come. A watch to watch.
So here we are, Samsung is launching an exclusive Gear S2 BALR. Edition in The Netherlands.
Next year is shaping up as the year of fashion tech. In that light, Samsung has announced collaboration with the fashion brand BALR., just one day before the Samsung Gear S2 watch lands on the shelves in The Netherlands.
Samsung and BALR. will work together to make a special edition of Gear S2 that comes with a new watch strap and new watch face.
For those of you who haven’t heard about BALR. before, this is a Dutch luxury fashion company. The brand was founded in 2013 by 3 Dutch professional football players.
Not only sports people like the brand. Also, famous Dutch DJ’s like Hardwell and Nicky Romero are regularly using BALR. products.
The launch of the watch was made public at a private party, in the Harbour Club. Just to show how important this merger is, it’s worth to mention that in attendance were many famous football players from top clubs like Ajax, Feyenoord, Dutch stars and VIPs.
Apart from the custom straps and faces, Samsung Gear S2 BALR. Edition has a case made from a custom material that is not plastic. The company did not detail on that, but we’ll keep you updated.
On the inside, The Samsung Gear S2 BALR. Edition will record your fitness data in the 24 hr activity log and is compatible with all Android 4.4 devices and up. Just like the basic version of Samsung Gear S2.
Aside the BALR. Edition custom strap, you’ll find in the box the original Samsung Gear S2 Classic straps. Just in case you need them.
We like the Samsung Gear S2 BALR. Edition. There is no doubt; it looks better than the standard Gear S2 Classic _________________________________

Edited above. Price is European not US.
Will take photos once I've got it. Some promos for now if interested:
So, it's basically a $100 strap?
Edit:
OP has been edited, so disregard my comment.
Also, for the same price of the original, hell yeah, looks pretty nice. Especially because the original strap is included to change it up a bit.
Well worth it, imo

Managed to pick mine up this week for €255. Being a T-mobile VIP client and a promotion they're currently running  Bargain!! Had to wait a while for the Special Edition to come in though. Yet well worth it.
Pros
Strap is really thick and great quality but was expected being BALR.
BALR. face makes it appear bigger strangely
Auto lock is a nice feature for those prowling eyes
Music controls working for Tunein, YouTube etc. Also from watch to phone to TV when connected
Cons
Lack of sleep tracking
No open last app. Handy for music although drag down menu has option and widget can be moved next to watch face.
Standard leather straps are terrible. Really if you're buying the classic you should consider the included straps as throw away. I'm hopefully going to salvage the quick release pins into another strap.
Battery on third/forth day lasted 40 hours with above average use
WiFi & NFC out
Auto-lock on and heart rate when resting
S-voice wake-up off
Brightness varies between 2, 3 and 4 depending on face
Apps closed frequently
Mentionable watch faces so far are Gear O'Clock: Swiss Sense, Paris Journey. Infinity S2. Seconds Clock.
Decent apps I've found:
Calculator
Timer
News Republic
HERE Navigator
XENOZU (YouTube player)
NOS Nieuws (Dutch)
Theft Alert
GearTorch
Firefly (game)
SnakeClassicS2 (game)
That's it for now until I can get some pictures done. I'll add anything else I can think of in the meantime.
I've had the gear S2 (sport) for about 1 week.. I really like the watch, but i'm wondering if the model is right.
I've been a smart watch user for long time. Pebble classic, Sony SW2, Pebble Steel, LG G Watch R, Pebble Time.
I've run into a few instances where my phone is tied up in the car with a six year old playing a gaming or streaming Netflix when i run into a store only to come out and have my wife go did you get my text about getting.... Granted This happens maybe one a month or every other month.
Gear S2 3G.... I don't run so i doubt the GPS would add that much... I might be wrong.
Gear S2 Classic... I do like the idea of being able to use any watch band and the classier look.
Who else has opinions on the Plus/minuses of the 3 models.
If you need call capabilities on your watch without your phone being connected via bluetooth, then go with the 3g model. Same if you want a watch with a speaker. Otherwise the Gear S2 sport or classic models should work fine. I prefer the Classic because of the look, plus I love the customization options that come with being able to use regular 20mm straps. Some prefer the sporty look instead. So basically decide if you need/want 3g/speaker. If not, then choose the look you want (sport or classic). My two cents

Honestly i could care less about the call ability.. The Ability to receive text messages when i don't have my phone i can see.. I have had a handful of times were i could see it beneficial.
I was ultimately wondering if the extra sensors/data of the 3G model provided something more that i wasnt' thinking about.
I bought the S2 Classic for the dressier look. I also like that it is easy to find other watch bands. I have switched to a black metal mesh band that goes very well with the watch. I also like that the bezel is textured and easy to operate.
Unless you plan to wear it while you workout get the classic. No brainer IMHO.
Got the 3G after 2 weeks with wifi version.
Having owned the original Gear S, there were somethingsome that I was expecting from a smart watch. For example a speaker, something the wifi version was lacking. After nothat having it, I realized just how much I missed it. Plus, not being able to detach from my phone and still have the ability to make and take aND take a phone call from my wrist. I'm really happy with it now.
I'm actually own tmobile 3g version. It is one fun watch. Now I can leave my phone in the pocket while driving and answer phone call from the wrist. Also quick look on Gmail, text, incoming call without need to reach for the phone is very useful. I only wish for more apps available for that watch. If LG Urbane 2 watch wasn't recalled I would have hard time to choose one.
At the time I bought my s2 I was actually looking at getting the 4g from tmobile but the cost was over double what I paid for my wifi sport. I just couldn't justify paying that much,.
I bought the 3g model because it had the speaker. I will not be adding it to my plan because I don't need a separate line just for my watch. But coming from the gear s, also without a separate line, I have become very used to being able to answer a call from my watch. Being able to do so is one of the most useful features of a smart watch. I wish the classic model was larger and also had a speaker. Maybe the second edition will be larger for all models as that seams to be the number one complaint, it's just too small (all models) but as someone who jumps on the "newest" and "greatest ", I bought it even though it's too small. That being said, once AW adds speaker support, I'd switch back to AW as it is a lot more useful, mainly due to Google now and app integration

Something you might not know about the S2 regarding GPS (I didn't until I got the watch -- it's not a well-advertised feature): There is a feature called, "Send SOS Message". You can configure it so that when you press the home button quickly 3 times, the watch will immediately start recording your voice for a brief message ("chest pains! help!"), and then send an SMS to up to 4 people with the recording attached, and text saying "help" (or something similar, not configurable, tested it but don't remember) with your location (lat/lon).
Even if you're a young whippersnapper with no health issues ("get off my lawn, ya damn kids!"), accidents happen. And for us older youths (I'm 53), it's definitely some peace of mind while hiking alone, for example.
I prefer the 4g model I got from tmobile. Just love being able to answer my phone from my wrist and not having to have an ear piece.

Funny, I thought the gear s2 classic was indeed too small when I bought it...but after a few months I realize the real problem: my other watches are too big lol. I've been wearing big watches because that's where the style was headed, but after getting used to a standard size like the gear s2 classic I'm all about the smaller watches now. My uncle's omega and Rolex are even smaller (38mm). It all depends on your wrist size and personal taste too of course. I hope the next gear is no larger than 40mm personally. Ok maybe 42mm max

^This :good:
My reaction was the same. I like my Huawei, but it really is a giant hockey puck on my wrist compared to any other watch I've ever had (and like many here, I'm a "watch guy" -- got many).
FWIW, the big size of AW watches is one of the more common complaints in the blogosphere.
It's a tough challenge for a smartwatch: A display big enough to be practical and useful (it's a smartwatch!), yet physical size to be stylish and attractive as a piece of attire.
We're getting there. The way this will be solved is with refinements to the UI. The display doesn't need to be biggger -- the design of the UI needs to show information in a clean, uncluttered, big-enough-to-easily-read manner. The S2 with the rotating bezel and circular UI elements is a good step forward -- expect this exact (through licensing) or something similar to become more mainstream.
Well today I returned the sport version for a classic.. I gave up on the 3g... added cost for uses I'll only use once and a great while.

I can totally understand
For a bit different perspective, I'm on a 4-line, 18GB shared data plan with 4 smartphones for my family. Given what we spend for our Verizon bill monthly, an extra $15/mo for the additional line on the watch seemed rather trivial, given the added capability.

Welcome to the official project thread of the S2SA!
This project can be supported via a Kickstarter campaign. Just take this road to get there.
I would be very pleased if you join the poll to find out the common interest in this project!
Some of you already read from my thoughts about a new strap adapter for the Samsung Gear S2 Sport in this thread. Initially the named thread was started by our valuable member simlpyphp who also decided to do some development on a strap adapter. Unfortunately he stopped development because of prototyping reasons. If anyone wants to reuse his model and needs help, just PM me.
1 - Introduction
The year 2015 brought a big variety of smartwatches to us. Not only for me it was a hard decision which wearable to choose. Maybe the Pebble Time? Maybe the Moto 360? After some time, also Samsung came out with a great new device, the Gear S2! The rotating bezel itself as a whole new handling experience put this smartwatch at the top of my wishlist and now I have it. Samsung offers two (actually three with the 3G) versions of this smartwatch. The Sport and the Classic. While both of those versions deliver the same hardware inside (apart from the Sport 3G), they differ at their clothing. The Sport (and Sport 3G) version comes with a stylish and futuristic housing with a proprietary strap connector, while the Classic version provides a standard strap connector in a classy design.
When deciding to buy the watch I decided to choose the Sport version as I like to use it as a sports tracker, where it is more comfortable for the skin to not have a leather or metal strap at my wrist. Nonetheless I want to wear my watch at the dinner with business partners or other noble events too. So I came to the idea that it would be nice to be able to use noble looking straps in combination with our watch as well.
And thats the reason to invent the "Sport To Strap Adapter" - in short S2SA!
So those who bought the Classic version want to laugh at us poor Gear S2 Sport owners but the one who laughs last that laughs best!
The BIG advantage against the Classic version IS indeed the proprietary strap connector. While Classic owners have to fizzle around to change their strap or have to put the watch off at all when sporting, we can simply change the strap as we like. Put on the genuine rubber strap and go jogging. After coming back you're under for a shower and after changing your clothes for the big business day, just simply switch from the rubber strap to the S2SA with the already attached stylish leather strap and you're done. Under 10 seconds. No fizzling! Ready for the day!
The S2SA will work of course also with the Sport 3G version, so for those of you who had no choice at all between Sport and Classic, here is your turn!
2 - Let's talk about design.
So here we go! The following pictures represent the first designs that I created. Two different ones. One with a straight edge and one with a round. The explanation of both design will follow after the picture. I want to mention, that the plan is to create some different "clothings" for the S2SA too:
shiny polished stainless steel, that will nicely fit to the housing of both the silver and the dark grey Gear S2
matted stainless steel (maybe with a brushed steel look?), that will fit best to the housing of the silver Gear S2
and dark grey lacquered stainless steel to fit the housing of the dark grey Gear S2
While the straight version provides a more sophisticated design to meet the existing design line of the smartwatch, the round design meets a more minimalistic manner. There are two different type of people. One of you want no space between the S2SA and the strap and one of you like it to let the S2SA follow the contour of the watch. Nonetheless both designs only add up a very little amount of size to your watch!
I want to mention how the S2SA can get assembled in terms of the connecting mechanism:
While the easiest intention is to take the connecting mechanism from a spare strap that you have (what you will have, because you got two sets of straps and only use one), it is a little handicraft. This is also the cheapest method because we won't get into need of additional parts.
Another possibility would be to deliver the S2SA assembled with the parts already so you can plug&play it. That would be more expensive, also small parts are worth their money...
An alternative is to avoid Samsung's locking mechanism and instead of the seesaw (the little button inside) use two little screws that will fit into the indent on the watch.
Actually I (for my own set) would prefer the first/second kind of connecting mechanism because after some strength tests I came to the conclusion, that Samsung did a good job in designing the connector (although a common strap connection would be better ). However, the alternative will surely be stronger but you will need a screwdriver to put on/take off the watch. The decision is up to you :good: !
3 - Which models are available?
I started with one design and for now there are 6, while 4 will get relevant, so I have to summarize them to make it easier to see each benefits. I am currently working on a more detailed line-up of all the different designs (and model structures).
At first you should understand the naming of all the models, so it will get easier for you to understand the whole matter. So the model naming follows a very easy cycle:
S2SA X YYX : S - straight edge, R - round edge
YY: nothing - Samsung standard connector, SW - screwed connector
The following pictures shows a quick comparison between all the recent designs. While you can see the common design differences, you will get more information about advantages and disadvantages as well as measurements of all the models after the picture in the given table. If you have any other questions regarding other properties, please post them and I will add the to the table.
You can view this picture in full size by right-clicking on it and selecting "Show in new tab".
You can view this picture in full size by right-clicking on it and selecting "Show in new tab".
4 - What should it cost?
As XDA-Devs is not a selling platform, I also won't sell anything here. The development will get funded by interested people mainly on kickstarter. I surely understand, that not everyone is registered at kickstarter and not everyone wants to do that. So for those of you, there are several ways to support developers work here at XDA. You can show the project to friends or help in acquiring possible suppliers to manufacture the parts or even donate some coins over the donation button near my profile picture... You know how to go !
Because some of you asked already for how to accomplish donations over PayPal!
When using the Donate-Button at the left side, you can donate any amount you want via PayPal, but that is regardless to this project (it is a private-to-private-donation with no additional securities). While I would appreciate your donations directly via Kickstarter, I want to give you the possibility to get the same benefits like when backing at Kickstarter with the same amount of security. SO: All of you, which want to donate something via PayPal to this project, please CONTACT ME FIRST! When it comes to donations, you have to donate not to private but to a commercial reciever. In this case you got the additional security from PayPal for a refund, when needed. We will talk about all question in detail via PM if you have some.
The price in the future depends on how much people support the work (in several sights) and how much are even interested in getting the S2SA. The more people want to have it, the cheaper it can be. Easy calculation. While it is possible to manufacture one set itself, it gets much easier when it comes to big series. To be able to make a better estimation, I would appreciate your votes at the given poll at the beginning of this thread! But for now it is not the right time to talk about that. But it should be effordable and should stay in a good ratio to the watch and straps itself.
Thats all for the moment! I would like to hear your thoughts and wishes! Every advice is welcome so let us come together to make our sweet smartwatch a little bit better!
Best regards
Gerhard

Hey crustyeyez!
Indeed I already mastered a first draft, where the watch itself sits inside a type of bracelet. But to not overcome the design process it takes some time to make things look good! Just stay tuned!
I'm very interested in this but planning on using a stainless steel band,or possibly a nice metal mesh band in black. I think the straight design would work best in this situation,or maybe the round one depending on the design of the stainless steel band. Would either of your designs work with a stainless steel band?

Hey gregorz48!
At the given first design evolution, all versions will provide best fit for the common watch straps we were used to in the past. So you don't have to worry for now which design to choose!
Nevertheless you might have to make a decision in the future which S2SA to choose because of the following:
Think about the metal mesh (so called milanese) strap. It is very thin and at the fixing point it will maybe show only a diameter of around 2mm.
And another possibility would be to use a heavy and thick genuine leather strap which also provides an elegant touch but will measure at the fixing point with up to 4mm.
Where at the first situation I am able to make the S2SA even shorter, situation two will require a little more space.
Please help and spread the idea to keep the thread up!

Isn't it incisive?
I updated the post with new information regarding the connection mechanism. You can find the new points at the end of chapter 2.
Here a quote about the new things as following:
I want to mention how the S2SA will get assembled...
Additional there would also exist an option to integrate the connecting mechanism into the S2SA itself, so it would only be one single part. That option is possible but manufacturing those things is not that super cheap.

The product is a good idea, but I think the tagline should read "Changes The Way You Get In Touch With Your Smartwatch" or "Changes How You Get In Touch With Your Smartwatch". There are some redundant words in there which amplify the fact that this is basically Marketing BS.

Yeah I think that this is not marketing bull****, more it is a grammatic error, because english is not my native language
But nevertheless thank you for your help, I will correct it! :good:
Today the first plastics prototype from the 3D-printer arrived! Although we had some problems with the laminating process (environmental conditions seemed to be not good enough) and we had to change the design a little bit because of the material the first prototype looks awesome! I also see what I already thought of... there is enough space to reduce! I think about 1-2mm! So although there were some prototyping issues, you know how the S2SA should look like (CAD pictures) and the prototype is the first gusto piece!

Looking phenomenal! Keep up the great work!
As today I got the first prototype I already spent some time on refining the measurements to decrease size. I have to say I am very satisfied with the result. Just look at the picture and the explanation below...
The base/watch plane represent the edges of the watch. So BASE-BOTTOM at V1 was nearly 3mm while at V2 it is only 1,2mm which means that the adapter wont add any height on the downside as the watch itself is nearly 3mm down there. WATCH-BAR was at V1 nearly 5mm while now at V2 its minimized to 3mm. So while the watch provides a diameter of 50mm, the strap would be 56mm apart. And WATCH-END was at V1 a little bit more than 7mm and at V2 now its only 4mm.
Again I try to get the new samples as soon as possible to show you the progress.
Great work Do you have your own 3D Printer? I used my Robo 3D+ (with some upgraded parts) to make all my prototypes. They looked similar to yours though my design is slightly different.
I look forward to seeing your finished product, feel free to message me if you want to chat over Skype about ideas etc.

Hey! Great to see you joining the discussion ! No I have no own printer, but one collegue of mine has.
And I am also curious about further prototypes and the end product. The next days I'll get another one to verify the new measurements and after that I have to switch to high resin 3D prints. Not that cheap because I have to order it somewhere else but it can be done.

And I am also curious about further prototypes and the end product. The next days I'll get another one to verify the new measurements and after that I have to switch to high resin 3D prints. Not that cheap because I have to order it somewhere else but it can be done.

Yeah that's the problem with 3D printing prototypes, I might have it EXACTLY spot on in the PLA and ABS prints I make, but when I get it made in stainless steel their machinery is far more advanced than mine and could be even more precise... thus the tight fit required for the adapter and the clip (especially the clip in my case) will be determined as soon as I get my package tomorrow.
For you, if you're having to order everything, it will be a longer process especially if multiple tweaks are necessary. I sent you a PM as well.
Hello Sir!
I like your idea! I own the Sport 3G and I would like to wear also those steel element straps you find also on the Pebble Time Steel! I like your design very much and wow the prototype looks good! I showed the pictures some friends of mine which own the 3G version and they were impressed too! I'm looking forward to further examples!
Do you know when the next ones will arrive?

Currently I did all refinements based on the last prototype and the new design (which is updated in the opening post now) is already finished. It's now out for printing. I hope to get them the next days for further testing !
Great to hear from your interest!
Best regards
Gerhard

Thank you sir
I would like to see the applying method of the adapter like it's at the oem strap. It seems very strong and easy to clip on because I dont want tools. Will the adapter scratch the watch when applied?
From my experience with smartwatches public reaction to them is usually love it or hate it. Just wondering if people got any interesting stories to share concerning reactions.
One I got last week involved a friend. He knew I owned a Pebble Steel. Upon seeing the S2 Classic on my wrist he inquired why I was no longer wearing a smartwatch? This brought a stupid grin to my face as a I casually pointed the face of the S2 towards him and rotated the bezel so the widgets would flash at him and show him that I was indeed still wearing a smartwatch. He realized his mistake and mocked me for being so cocky with my demonstration.
It's been all positive. Some people called my S2 3G classy looking (default white band), some cool & sporty (navy & red band), & some awesome (phone calls and ringtones, remote start my car). A couple people mistook it for the Apple Watch while complementing it on its design & sleekness.
I cant wait for Samsung Pay. It will blow people's minds even more.

A client saw my S2 Classic and commented "Is that one of those Apple watches?". To which I replied "No it's one of those Samsung watches".
I recently had someone serving me at a shop ask me about my watch. After me basically convincing him how awesome it was he showed me his normal analogue watch and said he really liked this one though so I just replied, I can get that watch face on here too if I want haha that made him stop and think a bit. I used to get a lot of people ask me about my silver gear 2 with silver strap as it looked so different however I think people won't get as many comments about the gear s2 as unless they see you playing with it I don't think they'll know it's a smart watch....which just confirms how brilliant it actually is! ?

I showed a co-worker a family picture on my S2 classic. He wears a Seiko monster and I think when he saw me turn the bezel to scroll through my gallery app he was surprised at the functionality of the bezel. He called other coworkers over and said you guys should look at this. I think he liked how you could scroll through widgets and gallery pictures while viewing the screen and that it looked very similar to his dive watch. He asked to see the watch again later when I had it on an olive drab Maratac strap and he liked the idea of wearing a zulu style strap on a smart watch. I wear it so I can slide the buckle to the side so my wrist is not resting on the buckle when I am typing. The strap feels similar to smooth seat belt material and I prefer the sonic welded seems instead of the double stitching because I can hardly notice the watch on my wrist it is so comfortable.
Ahahaha, the reactions I get are hilarious (but largely positive). Most people don't even notice I'm wearing a Gear S2 Classic. To everyone I've been around it just looks like a normal watch (which to me is a hallmark of great smartwatch design).
About a week after I got my watch I went out with friends to dinner (the first time I had seen them since). For about an hour they had no idea I was wearing a smartwatch until my best friend noticed the screen turn on when I was checking the time (we had to wait for tables to free up). She freaked out and went "no way, is that a smartwatch?!?" then proceeded to show all of our friends the watch. I let her play with it for a bit before dinner and she was totally absorbed by it. She freaked out even more when I showed her what the bezel did.
Another time I was browsing in an electronics store and I was playing around with a Tab S2 on a Samsung display table. This guy walked up next to me and started looking at the Gear S2 and S2 Classic next to me. I got a message from a group chat, so naturally I swung my arm up and checked it.
I think the guy stared at my wrist for a solid minute or two in awe.
Edit: I just wish Samsung Pay would launch for older NFC-only devices, and in NZ.
Hello to all
i am thinking about buying the Gear VR 2018 for the note9.
is it worthit buying it or should i choose other option?

IMO even the latest VR is still pretty bad regarding being very pixelation and bad clarity. The only real time I can see myself using it is on a airplane to watch a movie and very occasionally playing a game. I really wish the experience was better but seeing how you're putting this phone half inch away from your face I don't see how it couldn't look bad.

I don't know about exclusive features, I guess just some stuff like Samsung Internet working on it or, Gallery app..
But for mobile VR in general it is nice.
I was divided between getting an Oculus Go or the Gear, but, the Go has the 64GB storage while my Note 9 offers 512gb, so more games and movies on it while not worrying that much about space. Also, it cost me 1/3 of the price.
Then from what I have read, both options (Note 9 Gear, or Oculus Go) run the same games/apps from Oculus Store. That was the deciding factor for me. No Oculus Go exclusives, so why bother.
One could argue that while my Gear and/or Note 9 will be left behing in a near future, when I change phones, or a new/better mobile VR solution is released like the Oculus Quest etc. At that time the Oculus Go as a standalone product would still have some use, even if just gifting it away to someone or storing is for future nostalgia. But idk.. I just don't care about that with this specific niche (first gen mobile VR).
One thing though.. I had a Dome glass cover perfectly installed, and ruined the bottom part of it (small 1mm x 10mm area on the bottom center). Because I used my Note 9 with the old adapter, as I have not yet gotten the new, proper adapter, so it forced the screen a bit. Be sure to use the proper adapter, even though it works without it.
thanks a lot for the feedback.
it helped me a lot... i think that maybe it is not yet the time to invest in this tech
Got the Gear VR free with my Note 9 last month. It works well, tracks well and is immersive. Main thing I have to worry about it the wife taking pictures of me with it on and posting to my friends and family
I also have gear vr headset and here in Poland there is very big troble in getting that proper connector, no one here knows anything about that connector, when we will gets it and if it will be available here. So for now for me there is no VR experience with Note9. And on the other hand i am still waiting for some "magician" build device that can have it`s own 2k resolution screens (one for each eye) but device that can use power and other resources from phone. That would be great because phone manufacturers don`t have to mount 4k screens in their products just to have enough PPI density for best vr experience. I know, i know, dreams for now but maybe reality in future?
