I created simple app to turn auto-backlight function on/off really quickly. I missed that feature on my HD2 and the need of doing 5 moves to get it changed was not much user friendly. So here is the solution!

Thanks for all your comments and ideas. This lead to following two versions that looks to be final.
AutoBacklightToggle (last update 2010/05/30):
Simply install the CAB below and you will get new program in Start menu called "AutoBacklight". When you tap the icon, it changes your auto-backlight setting from on to off or backwards based on your current state. Simple and effective.
AutoBacklightSteps (last update 2010/09/29):
The "Steps" are extended version of toggle. You can set predefined backlight settings that will be called each time you run the app. Let's say you select 10, 50, 100, Auto. First time you run the app, the backlight is set to 10%, second time to 50%, then to 100% and finally to Autobacklight. In next step the 10% setting will be back again.
There were few changes done on 09/29 (v1.0):
- the backlight is set to the same value for both the battery and external power.
- everyone can select what the steps will be (see below)
- everyone can select if he wants the change to be confirmed by pop-up window (see below).
Setting AutoBacklightSteps:
1) There is a new TXT file in Program Files/AutoBacklightSteps folder called AutoBacklightSteps.txt. All the setting is done in there manually.
2) The first line is used to adjust the steps. You can use numbers "10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100" or character "A" which means autobacklight. Separate all steps with comma, otherwise it will not work. I attached the default TXT file to this post for reference.
3) The second line is used to turn the notifications on/off. Write there Notification=1 to turn it on or 0 to turn it off.
What exactly does the program do? Is Auto-backlight depending the light sensor?
Yes. Auto-backlight uses the light sensor to adjust backlight. This function can be turned on/off in setting but it is hard to get there so I made simple app to toggle it using one tap.

Just had a genius idea. Is it possible that you could dim/brighten the backlight by holding in a hardware key? ie. Hold the button then it brightens gradually to 100% and then back down to zero etc.

Yes, you can use AEButtonPlus app and use your volume buttons to control your backlight in two stages by long pressing them (short press volume control). Low- medium-high. I love it and use it all the time.

If the default auto-backlight solution is too annoying you could just use Lumos... just Google the xda forums for it. Been using it from Touch HD to now and still works great.
I made something similar just a little while back that also functioned as a launcher for haret (ie, to launch Android) on the TP2. Are you just toggling the registry key, or are you directly controlling the function?

Yep, just changing registry value. It is good that it takes effect immediatelly after you change it.

Ya, I was surprised to find that it seemed to take effect almost instantly. How do you suppose that works, some HTC program constantly polling that value?
Is it "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\ControlPanel\\BackLight", "LightDetectOn" on the HD2 as well? I wonder if it's consistent across HTC devices.

under menu or settings, you can switch on or off the auto-backlight and if it's off, you can manually adjust the backlight easily.

Outstanding! It is just what I was thinking today... I need a AutoBackLight toggle function, because I like to have my screen on 90% (in battery mode) but when I'm using it to maybe just read (white text on a black background (which I wish there was more of)) for long periods, want to save a bit on battery life or in a fairly dark room, I want to be able to easily switch to 'auto' and back again when required.

Found a key for touch prediction that when edited showed a marked improvement in keyboard responsiveness and small item manipulation ie classic desktop, file explorer, etc.
The key is: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\TouchPrediction
Edit key for latency from 8 to 2.
Edit sample time from 8 to 2
Restart
See attached for a edited registry key to inject. Tested on two surfaces with no ill effects.
edit: to answer a few questions: this increases performance on all touch aspects of the device
The most likely ill effect would be a decrease in battery life as the system must poll the touchscreen more often... just be aware. Otherwise, cool find.
Keyboard does seem faster... Does this also affect swiping? it seems like I can swipe in any way and get the full length of the page / app in one swipe?
Haven't noted in marked increase in battery consumption but I will monitor.
Could this improve the home key button, when my surface is on standby it takes about 6 taps to get the surface to wake up.
possibly, I have not tested the mod for that per say,

I also have not noticed an increase in battery usage on my asus vivo tab. Not a surface, but rt.
What would decreasing the values to 1 due? I am assuming the lower the value, the better. Or did it not test well on Surface?
Originally I choose 2 to test the battery draw. However, now that I haven't seen any significant increase in battery usage the drop to 1 can be done.

Is it that easy for all the values? In other words, can all of the registry values be set to 1 to improve performance? Or are all the values a certain number for a reason? Cuz if latency of 1 works better than the original 8, idk why Microsoft would put it at 8 in the first place. Sorry for all the questions. This stuff is interesting to me!
First off all any values are "safe values". Some screens might be of worse quality then others (different manufacturers of parts). Having that value setup to happy medium means all screens act the same. You lower the value you demand that screen reads the inputs faster and more often. Might not be a good idea on some devices.
Not only talking about surface. Remember win8 (especially pro) will go on many different devices.
Also if you set sampling and refresh to low it might start having ghost touches from minimum input that would normally not be visible (oversensitive).
Best to practice and find perfect for you and your device.

How about the other regs that don't really have a highest/lowest rate? For example, Disable Hotmail is defaulted at 2. What would changing that to 1 do?

No there is no general rule where lower value is better. Some of the values displayed are "face values" where 2 is 2 like refresh 2 times a second. Some times 2 and 1 have a meaning off or on (like your hotmail). Remember PC reads numbers. Even more sometimes numbers, text or mix you see like 8 or 4 are actually representations of some kind of code for example hex or binary.
If you do not know what the number represents then changing it is a guess and nothing more. Just have a backup copy as fiddling in registry with drivers can have funny side effects. I did make my hd7 think i am touching it everywhere all the time so it hang seconds after boot
Are we sure this does anything at all? In order to test if the differences were psychological, I set the number to a ridiculously high value and it didn't seem to behave any differently.
Yup I found noticeable differences in fine touch control including in the registry,window control, etc.

Is 2 a good value in the case of the surface PRO 1 ?
"touch prediction" did prediction, not pooling!
"Latency" = how much milisecond to look ahead
"SampleTime" = the period in milisecond to average your finger's motion
The effect is thus:
Larger "latency" make the pointer overshoot, smaller "latency" make the pointer lag behind (1 - 100 milisecond depending on your system performance).
There's no penalty on your tablet's battery or digitizer's life for turning TouchPrediction off, and you don't need to restart to see the effect. (try finger drawing in MS Paint to see effect)
If your Surface missed touch, then try to cool the back of your tablet. It might be thermal throttling.
There are a few things I don't care for in my new SG5. Hoping someone could help:
- Default applications won't stick. For instance I have several different applications that could open to make a phone call (Phone, Talkatone, skype, etc). It doesn't matter which one I select they always pop up for me to select again.
- When battery level is down (I think around 10%) it automatically turns down the brightness level (wayyyyy down. I can barely see it) and disables the brightness control in notification bar. It also disables camera altogether (not just flash). I would like to be able to decide what I want to use those last minutes of juice for. Maybe instead of my phone extending the battery so I can make a call I would like to use that juice to take an important picture. In the past I've only seen the flash disabled, now it's the ability to use the camera altogether.
- Is there anyway to get rid of the quick connect and S finder buttons on the pulldown notification bar?...and while at it is there a way to get rid of the toggles altogether or at least make them way smaller. I like a clean notification bar. To me this is just clutter.
- The ultra power saving mode is cool, but I wish you could make it so it automatically goes into that mode under certain conditions (i.e. when the screen is turned off or when the battery falls below a certain threshold). In addition I wish I could pick what apps I could use under this mode not just the ones that came pre-defined with the phone. I understand that obviously that may affect how long the battery would last given that any app could consume a lot more power than the pre-defined ones.
I know (hope) over time as ROMs start to appear all of these "wishlist" features will be made available, but was wondering whether there are already ways to do this.

It makes no sense for the phone to go into ultra power saving mode when u put the screen to sleep
You wouldnt be able to use it right away
You would have to wait the 10 seconds for it to come out of ultra ps mode every time u feel like checking fb
But auto turning on after a certain percent would be nice

yes, this is VERY annoying
and what is even more annoying is it gives you a stupid reminder on how to reset setting that app as a default every time...its just 1 more extra button to press all the time

MIUI, a skin over android that we all know and love/hate/neutral of... With the upcoming MIUI 10 update coming over, I'm sure all of us are very excited for the new features, like the single camera bokeh effect, full screen gestures, and so on. But of course, MIUI has it's ups and down, like maybe an app drawer. We also know that there are other "skins" for android from other companies like say Huawei, One Plus, Oppo, etc. They have their own unique things about it which may attract people over to their platform for that very reason.
With all the unique features that other UIs have, maybe we could take some inspiration from them and maybe with MIUI 11, it could be integrated in. Who knows? So here are some of my suggestions:
- Off-screen Navigations
I know MIUI has things like double-tap to wake screen and such. But maybe add more of it. Say a music's playing, maybe with like a triple finger swipe to the left will skip it, a triple finger tap will pause it and play it, and a triple finger swipe from top to bottom or bottom to top may control the volume. There could be so much more to the navigations. It be very handy for when your screen's locked and we wanna so a quick action.
- Gaming Experience Mode (GEM)
Maybe something for the gamers too? Like say we press an icon like the "switch" button to go to second space, but this time it's something new like an "Enter GEM" setting, when enabled pops up a button like second space does. When pressed, it basically turns of syncing and such, focusing all the ram, cpu, gpu to the games available, where calls/notification are all turned off or maybe minimised to a small pop-up on the corner of the screen, swipe it away to ignore it or tap it to open up a small tab for suggestions, like maybe a WhatsApp message comes on, you tap the small icon and then 3 suggestions pop up. Eg. "Cant talk right now", "Talk to you later", or maybe "Duude! I'm playing PUBG right now!". It's up to you, you can edit it in the settings or some sort.
- Side-Assistant
You know how Samsung has experienceui or touchwiz? With their "edge" devices, you pull the edge of the screen from that curve that will pull a tab with contacts, etc. Well, MIUI could maybe do something similar? Rather than the "quick ball" option which limits us to 5 actions, maybe make it so that you pull the edge of the screen, then a small tab opens, which will contain contacts, quick actions like screenshot, flashlight etc. Suggested apps? It's almost limitless. Maybe even make a small google search bar in the side assistant tab.
- Navigation Button Pattern (NBP)
Ever placed something in a safe or some sort, and then we placed in a code so it could open it, of course you did. Well this is something similar, say we made a combination of, home button, then recent apps button, then home button again. We make a command for that exact pattern, say we make it so that if we do the pattern/combination, it will open settings or open an app, or call someone. It's pretty much limitless, with something like this, it could pretty much make shortcuts with a small move. It'll be pretty dandy you know!
- Lasting Power Mode
With MIUI's integrated battery saver mode, it will pretty much disable syncing and processes to make sure the battery last longer, but with that mode on, we could still probably spend loads of juice from just say using the GPS. So like Samsung's ultra power saving mode, this will limit us to certain apps that are essential, while making sure that non-essential processes and background actions are restricted to keep the battery alive as long as possible, but it comes with the cost of experience. But sometimes we really do need it, so it may just be worth it.
- Gyroscope Gestures
Come on Xiaomi! With the gyroscope in your devices, using that sensor of yours could really come in handy! Like maybe shake the phone to turn the flashlight on. Wave it to accept calls and put it on speakers, etc. Oh and a favourite of mine would be to flip the phone twice to turn camera on or something.
- Phone H Check (H means Health)
Now something with the built-in security app. We know how useful it is, how much we love it. How we can save space with it, etc. But sometimes having to wait to make sure our phone is in the best condition is a bit of a drag, for me at least. So... why don't you add a night check session, say every 1 A.M, it will do the optimization. Cleared the ram, junk, battery stuff, etc. So when we wake up, our phone is all healthy and ready to use!
So that's all I've got for now... Comment if you think if they're a good idea or a bad idea, etc. Maybe even suggest your own!
Given the less friendly finger print reading I have taken to double tapping on the screen to turn it on. But relatively often it does not respond to a double tap. Is anyone else experiencing that?
The other one is that at many web sites I go to a pop up message box will come up asking if they can read my device's location. The answer box NEVER responds to a click. The screen will be dim. I have to back up 1 screen which closes the query box. I actually expect that one of my apps that have privileges to over write other apps is the culprit, but I don't see why they would mess with that one function, especially when at that moment those apps aren't being brought up. Any thoughts on this?
Increase screen sensitivity if you haven't already.
Yes I've experienced the double tapping unresponsiveness and decided to have AOD on all the time instead despite additional battery drain just to bypass this issue.

That's what I do on the 10+
Battery drain is slightly less than 1% @ hour.
For me it runs best/most efficiently with no power management* running other than the system power setting to optimized.
*some apks are package blocked otherwise all buckets show as active in Developer Options. If this is not the case unwanted power management is active.
I'm running Pie; not sure how Q will respond. I found it's best to let Android handle power management exclusively other than blocking serial power hogs like Google Backup Transport and Framework Services Framework. I don't use these.

Here's another interesting thing: every now and then (actually several times during the course of a day) after turning the screen on the bio didn't with nor the location, and it forces me to enter the pin to get into the phone. I even have it set to not lock if hooked to my hearing aids and it still happens.

I keep my phone with me at all times, don't let others use it and never lock it. Makes life easier.
It's a steep learning curve with these devices... make sure it has the permissions it needs like being able to change system settings.

Hmmm... The setting to read it loud is a system setting itself (in Accessibility settings). I don't think there are any permissions to make. I did just look and nothing is apparent.

Permission to change system settings is in it's own listing apart from permissions in each app settings.
Could be more than one apk needed to make all work right.
Make sure power management not doing it.
In Developer Options>Standby Apps, all apps listed there should show as having their buckets as "active" if they not, power management is active.
You don't want that.
