[Q] GPS/Market/Orientation problems with Galaxy Spica

Hi,
I recently got an old Samsung GT-I5700 Galaxy Spica that was going to be thrown away but it seems to have a few problems, except I am not sure if they are a sign something is broken or if I can fix this thing. It is Android 2.2 on it, and is using CyanogenMod-2.0.0-Spica-alpha6. First, whenever I try to download something from the market I get the error:
"Download was unsuccessful, please try again"
I am doing this over wifi and I can use the browser, so I know there is a network connection.
Second problem I have is that I cannot get the GPS to find my location. The GPS symbol shows up and it looks like it is trying to find a location but it either never does, or depending on the application it says the location could not be found. Is there anything I can do to diagnosis this and find out where the problem might lie?
Finally, when I change orientation the screen does not change. I have gone into the settings and set "Auto-rotate screen" on but it still does nothing when I rotate the phone.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has some ideas about what I can do about these problems. Otherwise the phone seems to work well, so I would like to get it working completely.

How to fix constant crashing on the Verizon Wireless version.

I am pretty sure that every Note 12.2 Pro Verizon Wireless version will crash every 5 to 10 minutes if you have most apps open.
To fix this, you need to remove the SIM card from the tray.
Prerequisites
Must be a Verizon Wireless model
Other proposed solutions that didn't work:
Resetting the device.
Removing MicroSD.
Switching from Samsung Keyboard to Google Keyboard
Replacing/repairing the tablet (probably not a hardware issue)
Charge the battery (flickering screen fix)
References:
The SIM card fix here did work --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...absolutely-perplexing-problems-5-1-1-t3262803
These solutions did NOT work --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-pro-12/help/crashing-minutes-t2840972
This is verified to work on the Verizon Wireless Note Pro 12.2! It seems that if your SIM card has no active data plan, then this will cause their device to cause apps to crash to the home screen. Just remove the SIM card since you aren't using cellular data anyway. I don't think it is a hardware issue, but rather a firmware issue that has not been addressed and will never be for a device this old. This fix not only removed crashes that happened constantly, but it also improved app performance. Before this fix, drawing in Autodesk's Sketchbook app was a pain. Sometimes a pen/brush stroke would not appear or would delay. Similar things happened with my Lecture Notes app, causing me to believe that I may have had defective RAM (which was absolutely untrue). So please do yourself a favor and remove your inactive SIM card.
However, I don't know if a SIM card with an active Verizon Wireless data plan will also cause the Note Pro to crash. I bought it for WiFi use but it was on sale brand new for the same price as the WiFi only version. If anyone can check if the bug persists with an active SIM card with a data plan, I would appreciate that very much.

I have an active T-mobile SIM in mine and no issues so far with an active data plan.
You are right though, it did have some odd issues when I had the sim in without an active data plan.
I diddnt have any app crashes but for some reason google play would not update apps even when I was on wifi, they would just stick in downloading status.
as soon as the sim card was activated or removed they downloaded fine.
There were a few other odd blips here and there when using something with network connectivity (Browser, facebook etc.)
The only reason I could see was that if you have an inactive sim card and then go to settings > about device > status the mobile network is constantly connecting and disconnecting and switching between unknown and LTE every second or two.
I suspect this may use extra processor resources and would likely impact battery life a bit as well.
I have an inactive sim at home, I may run some tests to verify it uses extra resources.
thanks for posting this, I noticed the issues and what resolved it but did not put two and two together until reading this post.
My SIM card was an inactive verizon wireless if that helps. I've only had crashing and memory issues. It's been several months now and not a single crash, and I always use my tablet.
If you want to test on your verizon sim, you should try sketchbook, videos, and any game such as clash of clans or boom beach. You need a memory or graphic intensive app to trigger these crashes.
Any small apps like Gmail will not crash. Although I had crashes in Adobe Reader if the PDF was large or the pages had a lot of visual content.
Note that I said you will crash with most apps open, I retract that statement. It is actually more likely to crash with anything that uses a lot of memory, caches alot, or is CPU or graphics intensive
Also, I think this bug only occurs on Android version 5.1.1
No problems here
Just wanted to let you know that I am still using my Note Pro with an active Sim card and I'm not running into any reboot issues. (I still haven't found anything even comparable to it to upgrade to without crossing over so i'll just keep using it! )

Adhell - anyone have any luck? Also posting the fix if you broke from it too

Anyone have any luck running adhell on this phone? Was going to email the dev and see if they want to check it out.
Kept giving me an RILNOTIFICATION (Radio Interface Layer Notification) after installed and even after removing. Kept causing me huge data griefs and mobile data would only work when it felt like. Would throw up error lte : ESM - 31 EMM - X as well all the time.
If you tried it and are having trouble, you HAVE to reset your mobile data with ##72786#. I found trying to reset it any other way didn't work.

no problems here, installed, accepted the knox stuff, seems to be working. It isn't blocking the adds i get on the home screen of CM Browser though, or an add i just had in Tube Map so not sure how effective it is, i havent used it before yesterday. It is definitely blocking some ads though.
I'm running it just fine.
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S8+ using TapaTalk Pro
Working fine here.
how are you seeing the error? I have it installed and haven't noticed any issues and seem to be working most of the time.
Got an email back from the developer, he said there does seem to be an issue with some carriers. He said he knew for sure now T-mobile appears to have trouble with it (hes getting reports of the same errors I am getting) and I have sprint and let him know.
My stuff still is acting goofy even after the reprovision. Also reset network settings and rejoined my current wifi network and completely reset up wifi calling and it will not work at all. I've never had it not work on this network. worked perfect until I installed and setup adhell.
Really wish I had never tried this stupid thing lol. Feel I'm going to be stuck with a restore....
No problems here: S8+ on Verizon.
Working fine on T-Mobile s8+ here.
I've tried adhell and disconnect pro now and both let through too many ads for my liking. on the homepage of CM Browser alone a load of ads get through every time. Never had anything like that on my S5 when I had roted and used AdFree. At this point I am thinking I need to try adguard or adblock plus (that use the vpn method) to see if they are any better as these two just arent blocking enough. The only potential issue with that is how much performance is affected by using those vpn methods, in terms of download speeds and battery life (VPN's use a lotof cpu power due to the encryption).

im on tmo and have no issues using it.
I had it return a couple random times and a profile update would immediately fix it and make it go away for a long while.
adhell must screw with the APNs (seems that way anyway) as I was only having this trouble on one specific APN at this point and only when the phone would decide to change to it. Since I cannot edit or view the APNs, can't say what for sure. I've since done a full settings reset (tried network only and it did zilch) and it's finally stopped completely now going near 20 hours. I have been on this APN since.
Every profile update would change what APN I was using and it'd stop. Same as a reboot or airplane mode. Soon as I switched back to that APN, instant RILNOTIFICATION about no data.
Funny thing is, the data did work, just horribly.
Running on my T-Mobile S8+ with no problems at all. I hadn't used it before, but so far I like it very much.
Keep in mind that Google play music (which happens to be default music player on the s8) needs to be whitelisted in adhell. The program nails up a persistent connection when it can't connect to ad servers and will blow your battery and suck a ton of resources.
Once whitelisted, no issues.
I am very pleased with adhell. Arcitecture is great, utilizes knox f/w and is open source on top of it. I would not trust this kind if stuff to just anyone.
It does a good job paring ads way back.
It seems to work fine with my S8+. I have this app that used to be slow when loading, now it load new contents very fast. Great ad block app.

Does disabling google play music stop that? I have it disabled in package disabler anyway.
Also for an open source app, it sure seems to be letting a lot of ads through. I read somewhere it lets ads through from certain providers like adchoices or seomthing. For me it seems to let all the same ads through that disconnect pro does and I see no reason why.

You can go to github and open the .json file that contains all of the blacklisted URLs. There are something like 2000.
Re Play Music, I cant see how this activity would resume if you had the package disabled, but I cant confirm you wont either. I can tell you that if it becomes an issue you will know it. I got a warning suggesting to shut the app down a few days ago.
Disconnect Pro uses a VPN, so they proxy all of your data through their machines. I cant say a bad word about them, but this is something that I would look very hard into before doing. Also, I believe you need to pay or use only the Samsung browser which is less than ideal.
I like how adhell is dns based, and utilizes Knox for blocking. I am not suggesting that adhell is the most comprehensive blocker out there but it works well enough and I am comfortable with its architecture.

disconnect pro doesn't use a VPN it uses the knox firewall to block by dns exactly the same way as adhell does, and in my limited testing it lets exactly the same ads through that adhell does too. I have heard that a lof of these companies get paid by some ad providers to let their ads through (i.e. simply not include their ads in the blocking), and the ads I have seen get through both adhell and disconnect pro have been obvious ads from obvious large ad suppliers which looks highly suspicious to me as there is no reason they aren't in their block list. These are all ads that were blocked on my rooted S5 using Adfree (or adaway i cant remember which one it was but it was a basic hosts file/dns based blocker and no such ads got through).
I looked at their site, the premium product is vpn based, the lower tiers apparently at not.

The one on the Galaxy Apps store ("Disconnect Pro Privacy and Performance") is not VPN-based. It does cost money, but it goes on crazy sales once in a while. I got it for a few bucks a year or so ago.
Although I haven't tried Adhell, Disconnect Pro has been flawless for me. No noticeable affect on battery life, zero difference in webpage loading speeds compared to using no ad blocker at all, and no annoying notification icons in the status bar. It works phone-wide, so it blocks ads in all apps. And best of all, root is not required.
I find that even the root-based ad blocking (eg: AdAway) would be a little too overzealous in its blocking and resulted in many video files on websites being blocked entirely just because they would contain an ad before the video. I don't get this problem at all with Disconnect Pro.
If Adhell works the same way that Disconnect Pro does but is free, then that's a win for everybody.

Reminds me of when apple started letting ad blockers in the appstore for safari. First people charged for the apps, then many deleted them cause they felt bad, others would let select ads through for pay. Was a mess.
I get why websites and businesses want ads, but they are way too intrusive. Like when on youtube and you get stuck watching a min long ad you cannot skip. Those piss me off to no end. Not sure I see them as much anymore.

Set up altitude, but "Network unavailable"?

When I selected "Calibrate now" after few seconds show up notification: "Network unavailable"
and next time will show: "Can't get a sea level air pressure reading for your location. Enter manually?"
Data/internet connection working on News, Weather apps. This behavior is same, WiFi or bluetooth connection.
Does anybody have any idea how to fix this bug?

Hi,
I had the same issue. Uninstalled the Wear application from phone and installed again.
Bingo..
Hope this helps.
I'm having this issue too. Ive tried reinstalling everything and resetting the watch. Nothing seems to be fixing it. Looking at the reviews of the alt-barometer app in the Samsung store seems to suggest the issue is widespread.
Have the same issue too. I think it's a problem of the defined server in the app which doesn't respond anymore. They should update the app...
Hi, i have exactly same problem after update to tizen 4.0. Have you some solutions?
Same problem , too. Last update 14.2.2019
I have noticed today at my job that I was at 188m, and when it worked I was less than 50m.
Same thing after reinstalling "wear", maybe worst, I didn't had backup
Same problem here after Tizen 4.0.
Same problem. Also affects Hiking Activity in S-Health on the watch. (It can't detect altitude so whole activity is broken showing "0km walked", "--" instead altitude and wrong calories). Tried every combination of reseting watch (with and without backup restore), reinstalling wear app and all plugins on phone and reinstalling altimeter app on watch. Even reflashed firmware via NetOdin. Also tried disabling adblock on phone in case some url gets blocked. No difference).
I'm also starting to think this have to do with predefined altitude server altimeter is contacting being down and not responding.
I had enough fiddling with this but if someone is determined they can try downgrade back to 3.0.0.2 to see if problem persist. Or try debugging the watch to see what is actually happening behind the calibrate request. Maybe even use packet sniffer.

It must really be a widespread problem. The same here after the update to Tizen 4.0.2. I have made several hard resets of the watch, the only thing I have not done is phone hard reset. Not going to suffer this not knowing if it helps. I was solving more problems, so I have made several hard resets of the watch. For instance, SOME of the incoming calls were not vibrating on the watch. But after the first hard reset after the update the altimeter started working the second day I think!!! I thought it was really an issue connected with unavailibility of a server somewhere. I was solving more important issues, so I have made other hard resets and since then the altimeter jut won't work...
Same problem after upgrade to Tizen 4. Tommorow i trying downgrade to Tizen 3.

I had the same problem. After several tries is now working. All I had to do was set the location to "high precision " on my phone (note 8) and after 4-5 times the watch will update automatically. Also I went outside.
I tried today and a get altitude measurement! I turned off and on my location on phone. But... I got lucky only one time. I tried 5 minutes later, and get "network unavailable"... Strange...

I had the same experience today. At 1 a.m. of our local time (Europe) I got one calibration but since then - nothing. It makes me believe that the problem is not in our watches or phones but on the side of a server somewhere. Were they testing something?
It seems that reinstalling the app would help. I have done it, and for now it's all good
again, network not available , one or two updates and gone again.
Another +1 here - I have just discovered that my S3 Frontier is doing exactly the same thing. Uninstalling the companion app on the phone and reinstalling it hasn't worked for me, the intermittent nature of it (based on previous posts) would suggest some back end network issue at the end of whoever provides that data.

As I posted before, same happened to me the first time after the update to Tizen 4
I had to turn location to high accuracy and had to go outdoors, and after 4-5 tries the altitude is calibrated and working perfectly now. One thing I noticed is that you need to set your phone location on all the time with at least "device only" option.

Seems that the data is provided by the android location services, not by your data/wifi; in this case you need to have the location on with "device only", seems to solved my problem, BTW I havent noticed more battery drain than using "battery save" mode.

Thanks for this tip - I missed your earlier comment so repeating it here again is useful and does seem to provide a work-around. Have a "Thanks" on me.
Since this is a recent change I wonder if Samsung got their device class confused and are trying to get the watch to aquire a "true" GPS fix rather than using the phone if available, but got it wrong with the latest build so now the watch has acquired a dependency it didn't have before.
My S3 has Wi-fi (but turned off) and no carrier / network (ie mobile phone) support and that used to work perfectly well with my phone's location services set to "High Accuracy" over the Bluetooth link which should surely be enough for any non mission critical consumer device since that uses network location, Wi-fi and GPS. I can see why someone might want a high degree level of accuracy on their watch but then surely the watch should be acquiring GPS itself which is why I wonder if Samsung were trying to be smart and got their wires crossed.
I will check out the battery usage implications of restricting my location to GPS at a later date, but I am mostly indoors and a) don't use the altimeter all that much and b) won't get much of a GPS fix in the concrete and steel bunker that is my office so I am expecting it to be an absolute battery sucker.
Thanks again for the tip about changing the location services on the phone.

My S3 is exactly the same as yours, and I dont have wifi or GPS on either, it gets the location straight from the phone, I checked it and when I go to altitude on my watch I can see that the icon of "searching location" goes on in my phone.
I am pretty sure that the GPS of the watch doesnt work by itself because I use it to run everyday (with my phone) and is tracking the metrics and altitude just well, also the location is locked and working, I run 5kms per day and I get 3 and a half days of battery and when I run with the watch alone I can get 1 and a half day (cause GPS and Spotify).
BTW, where I live/work there are no high structures or buildings miles around, maybe it means faster location.
Regards.
I found solution that help me in reddit: "Switch on "location history" in Google account. Should help"

Question How to prevent GW4 from disabling an app?

Hi!
I had an issue with gpay on my watch and seems that after I rested it and change the region I was able to properly add card to my gpay app and even use it at the store - the issue is that the app is getting disabled all the time, after it's not connected to the phone or if I enable GPS on my watch it seems to cause the app disappears.. my question is - is there a way to prevent the galaxy watch 4 from disabling this app all the time? maybe somehow through ADB or something? would appreciate any help!
A possible fix would be to install Gpay under an alias like if it has a different package name then I think it won't be disabled. But I doubt that will work for payments though.
