My wife got a Skyrocket in December and as of January 18, it started sending a TON of data. I'm talking GBs at a time. The first night it sent 4GB and thereafter it's 500MB-1.5GB here and there. Obviously this is busting our extra gigabyte purchases pretty quickly.
I've installed a couple of per-app monitoring applications. TrafficStats allowed me to show system applications and filter to network data only. It shows the data was sent (not received) in the total, but doesn't attribute it to any application. Right now it's over 731MB but the Gmail app, which has used the most, is at 31MB.
It seems to happen whether or not Wifi is enabled and connected. Turning packet data off does stop the traffic.
What can I do to figure out when this is? I have ADB working and root access, but not sure how to go about seeing which app is doing this.
Thanks!
I m guessing its CIQ that's sends this much ****ttttttttt so just disable ciq and it will hopefully stop sending!!!!!

I removed CIQ via the commands here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399429&highlight=remove+ciq
We'll see if that helps. Would CIQ really transfer gigabytes at a time? Is it sending real-time video back to AT&T in addition to keylogging??
If anyone else has a good tool to monitor the traffic I'd still be interested.
Download / Install "My Data Manager" (free) from Market.. it will show every app/service using data, wifi... and how much.
Unfortunately I'm having a problem finding any apps that support AT&T LTE interface monitoring.
I can, however, see some traffic flying by on tcpdump over adb (on rmnet_sdio0 which I think is the mobile interface). But there's no way to tell which app it's coming from.
download "Data Usage Defender" its the best data/wifi monitoring. It tells you exactly what apps sent and received how much data, over what network 3G/4G/Wifi, it monitors and can cut off your data connection to a pre-set limit you chose, it also gives you realtime speed from a little windows under your status bar. I've had it, but since i have 10Gb of data and NEVER go over i uninstalled it
Thanks! Data Usage Defender seems pretty great, and was able to catch all the traffic. I just watched the 'Email' app send 50MB in about 45 seconds while receivinf 4.4kb.
Now to figure out why...or just uninstall email and switch entirely to the gmail app. Has anyone else experienced this?
I have got a problem which is bothering me, actually it is pissing me off, which is the fact that mobile data is being used on the background on my nexus 5 even if the mobile data is disabled. These data accesses from my phone are obvioulsy being executed by some app or apps on my phone but this shouldn't happen since I only use wi-fi. In the Network Usage screen there is no app whatsoever, and still at random moments of the day/night it uses mobile data.
Usually these unwanted data accesses are during the night, most of them at exactly midnight, but others are at random hours and, the only way I noticed this was happening was by consulting my phone registers in my account in my service prodiver's webpage.
I am not totally sure of this but from what I have read and been told, if the mobile data is disabled the other option which is "Background Data" is not accounted. So, if the general option for mobile data is disabled NO data at all should be used.
There is a thread which reports a similar problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1816167 , however it is not helpful and not about nexus 5.
Does anyone know what could be happening? I am 100% stock on my nexus 5 anyway and only download apps from the store directly, so there isn't any administrative access for any of the apps that I installed. Maybe it is something related to the fact that this is my first phone in which I have 4G enabled? I really don't know...
Thank you in advance!
Update on the current situation:
I asked my service provider (Vodafone) to disable 4G, and to keep only 3G for mobile data. Strangely since that, no more random unwanted mobile background data has been used, so I can conclude two things:
- The genesis of the problem could be on my service provider whenever 4G is enabled by them for the client, or,
- The problem could be on the android OS (4.X +), which may not be doing the block on the mobile data aproprietly. And since I browsed for similar problems, the problem was always with 4G and on 4.X + version of the android, independant from the phone brand and service provider.
This problem should be reported on google AOSP forum.

When this happens, can you look into data usage to see what app was using the mobile data? Maybe that app somehow has some permission to enable mobile data. I've not heard of that happening, so not sure how that would happen.
Also, how are you disabling the mobile data? (some widgets provide the ability to turn off 2g and/or 3g and/or 4g independently - so make sure that both 3g and 4g are being turned off)

Since the moment I disabled mobile data (30th of December) no apps are shown in the data usage, I said this above: "In the Network Usage screen there is no app whatsoever, and still at random moments of the day/night it uses mobile data."
Concerning the 3G and 4G being turnned off or not, I could turn them off but I shouldn't need to do it since by disabling Mobile Data in the Network Usage menu should take care of blocking the data correctly.
This problem has been resolved, but not in the ideal way, as I said in my second post. Since I asked my service provider to turn off 4G on their side, there are no mobile data accesses being done from my phone.

Turning 4G off is one way to fix this
I wonder if the service provider had some issues with counting 4G usage - I don't recall hearing of an issue where turning mobile data off would permit usage. But I could be mistaken.
(assuming you are going into settings to disable mobile data, yes, that should completely disable the mobile data connection 3g/4g - wasn't sure if you were using a widget or other means)

I know what you mean about not hearing about the problem since there are only a hand full of forums which mention this. However I do believe this is generalised for 4G and, probably most people don't even notice it because, either:
- People that never had a mobile data subscription never needed 4G (activated by their service provider), and so in 3G no problems exist. Or,
- People that have a mobile data subscription don't need to worry about these "leaks" of mobile data, and so they never notice it, even if they disable mobile data since their data subscription is enough to not make them pay for a single access (as it happens in my case).
UPDATE on my situation:
Since I asked my mobile service provider (VODAFONE) to turn off 4G for my number all the mobile data leaks disappeared and all is working fine. But the question still remains, if the problem originates from the mobile service provider or from the android 4.4.2 rom
I have got the same magic with my nexus 5(4.4.2), with disabled mobile data (we have only edge-gprs) it connects to network via cell and my mobile operator charges money..
That shows its not just a problem with 4G since he's having an issue with edge/2G

I am mostly or you can say only on WiFi , I did find some extra charges because of some mobile data usage, contacting my service provider did help, but I still believe that there are certain apps which work even when I am not on WiFi hence the extra charges.

Hello guys, I saw some apps for android like, comodo anti theft, avast anti theft, eset anti theft, and so on, for locating the phone.
Which one do you recommend or think that is the best?
I have gived a try to avast and comodo, but I saw that if the phone is in the house I can not locate it from the laptop browser / avast web-interface,
as it needs to enable the GPS reciver and gps can not be started automatically or even if it is started it will not "see" the gps sattelites because of the roof. And with comodo I saw no web-interface, only sms texting, and I have only one phone, no secondary phone handy for finding it easy.
I wish to be able do do two simple things by controlling it over internet using a laptop (wify or carrier data 3G/EDGE/GPRS)
1) If I forgot where is my phone in house and I have no other phone, to be able to make the phone to sound an alarm for finding it more easy, it happens often to forget where my phone is in the house
2) Locate the approximate location of the phone by using GSM towers, and NOT the GPS (in case that will be stolen, or I forget where I left the phone, in car / at work / at house etc.)
Hello, well to help you out I use Kaspersky Mobile Security, it has alot of features, you can lock the phone via sms messages, take mug shots, wipe the phone and locate it too, you can look for it in the play store, its a paid app but I think its worth it, I would look into it if I were you and consider it as a viable option. Hope this helps.
You can locate your Android Device with Googles Device Manager and has a features to lock the phone and ring.. Also I believe there is APPs to track your device with GSM towers.

Thx!
I have enabled in settings > Location services > Access my location and google location service, now I can find my location without using gps, avast anti theft works pretty well, I also found an interesting app on google play named Secret Control but it has some ads.

Wow! I thought we need gps in order to locate our location. This is great
So, Is there a way to toggle Mobile Data / Wifi On and Off from the Gear S3 ?
This is a function I believe Samsung should initiate even if they kept it within the bounds of Galaxy phones from Gear Watches it would be a great marketing point.
As it stands, the data toggle in particular is not achievable easily as third party access to mobile data was removed by Google for security reasons in Lollipop. It can be achieved by rooting your phone with the usual caveats that go with that (and I did this successfully on my Galaxy S6). At the moment the work around I use on my unrooted Galaxy S8 is Tasker with the AutoInput plugin and TaskS2 on my watch. It allows me to mimic button presses on the phone screen and has replaced most of the functions I had previously, however I can only toggle data, WiFi, airplane mode, I can't select on or off discretely because of the way AutoInput is employed. All of these apps are paid apps.

Hi All, I have a Nexus 6P, Android 8.1, on the Google Project Fi network
I have the MLB At Bat app (baseball) and it was working fine for a while - I keep background data off for most of my apps because Project Fi's data costs are expensive and as such I've had background data turned off for MLB At Bat since I installed in a couple of months ago. This week however it used over 1GB of background data (and over 10GB of wifi data which I don't care so much about) How is it possible that it used background data when it was disabled? I'm checking all the time now to see that the app is closed (force stop) whenever i'm not specifically using it.
While the app does allow audio and video streaming I don't use it for that, just for push notifications for team news and such. I see a couple of recent reviews on that app's Play Store page that say exactly the same thing I'm saying - but don't mention if background data was turned off or not for them.
I guess my question is, how is it possible that it sucked up background data while it was disabled and is there an app or something I can install that will stop that from happening again? or at least alert me that there's a rogue app costing me a fortune?
Thanks!
