Sound is too quiet - Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Questions & Answers

So my phone has quiet sound and want to do something about it. I tried everything and its a no go. What to do?

get nicelock and download sound assistant module, then you can modify to both get lower or higher sound

You don't need nicelock to download that. Sound assistans can be downloaded alone on galaxy store.

yeah but I think it says good lock labs in your pic, for us that lives in a country where good lock isn't supported will have to use nicelock i guess.
But for sound assistant maybe we don't need to at all ?

Good lock isn't available in sweden where i am from yet sound assistant is available to us.
It's probably because sound assistant does not need good lock to function.

With what output device (speaker, by, etc) and app is the volume level too low?
It's a common problem on some vids when using browsers via speaker output. This issue still mystifies me; is it the source or something in Android causing it? A different file type? Saw this behavior on my S4+ and now again on the 10+ running on Pie.
With bt you can jack it up otherwise you're boned.
Sound Assistant does nothing to help this; it's more for controlling the level increment setting.
Somewhere here on XDA there's a post where they said to go to settings>sound and vibration, and to slide the media volume control to zero to full a couple times.
There was more to their solution but it seemed to work. Lol, I should've bookmarked it.
Clearing browser cache etc does nothing.
Also check your advanced sound settings, all of them.
Resetting settings globally might get it but if that's the cure it's worse than the illness... so I either ignore that vid or switch to Buds+ to hear it.

Go to Accessibility settings, and under Adapt Sound, change it to Over 60 years old.

You can check if the sound limiter isn't set to on by default in settings › digital wellbeing (i can't remember where exactly since i uninstalled it).
If you are using Bluetooth headphones you can disable the absolute volume in the developer settings (i translated the name from French so it may differ)
That setting sync the phone and headphones volumes so that when you increase it from the phone it increases it on the amp's headphone too.
I don't like it because the volume step is too high so you can't fine tune it with Sound Assistant.
By disabling it you also permit a higher volume output since they are independent.
On my older devices it also made the sound better (odd but still).

[Q] Minimum volume too high... I know, silly.

But seriously, this wasn't an issue before JB. I listen to music at night with my headphones on, to drown out my husband's snoring. Before (I think before the JB update, but not positive), I could put it on a very low volume, and I'd barely hear it. This was great, as it didn't wake me up when a louder song came on.
Since upgrading to JB (again, I think that's when it started), the volume "slider" has specific notches and can no longer be set to any volume along the spectrum. The lowest "notch" is too loud at night and keeps waking me up.
Anybody know of an app or setting or something that would revert this back to a free sliding volume switch, where I could go so low, almost to the point of barely hearing it? I was startled nearly out of my pajamas last night, when Van Morrison screeched something in the middle of a relatively sedate song.
Thanks in advance!

if you have CWM installed i can fix that for you..
I haven't noticed a difference in volume since the update, but I never have the volume that low. You could just get headphones with inline volume controls to decrease the volume.
I never even used ics on this tablet so I don't know either..

Sorry i read this wrong.. i thought you wanted it louder.. but yes you can still use the equalizer with this and set everything low so the volume will also be lower.. and when you need that extra boost it will be there also...

Thanks for providing this. I installed it and have no idea what to do with it. I know I have to select the first option, but after that I'm lost. And I don't notice any changes in sound with the headphones on, when I change any of these settings. Any idea what I might want to change to get lower minimum volume?
Edit: I selected this as my MusicFX option, under my Sound settings.

[Q] Volume changing while playing music

Does anyone else have this kind of problem? The volume while playing music is always changing, like one step up or down every 5 minutes give or take.
- I disabled all the sound and equalizer options from the settings to test if that was the cause but it didn't help.
- Rebooting the phone also didn't help.
- I use Spotify, didn't test any other app yet but I don't have this problem on my Nexus 5 using the same Spotify version.
- There is no way the volume keys were pressed accidentally because even when the phone just lies there, flat on the table, this happens.
- I am on the latest OTA.
Ha ha I thought I was crazy. Yes I do, it's not a drastic change in volume but I know exactly what you're talking about
Same problem here. ..
Did anyone find a solution to this problem? This is probably the most annoying bug I've ever experienced.

I have the same issue on my edge
I had the same problem, it was due to the "Sound Alive+" option in the sound menu.
I found that it was incompatible with both Spotify and Google Play Music, changing the volume of the songs randomly. As soon as I disabled this, the volume glitch stopped.
However, I migrated across to the stock music app, as I love the Sound Alive option.

That doesn't solve the problem for me, I disabled all the sound options (and still have them disabled) and even all the gestures and this still happens regularly...
Hey guys, same problem, I assume it's because of the equalizer voice/instrument equalizer wheel, for some reason it keeps adjusting music vs voice when I play music even if it's set up to normal... Let's hop samsung provides a way to fix this
I had the same issue initially as well using a bt speaker.
I have disabled sound Alive+. In addition, I have disabled the EQ of my speaker and in spotify. Doing so solved the issue for me...
Spotify informs you that using the Equalizer (software) it can affect sound level on some devices. So make sure that you do not have (extreme) equalizer settings in any of the affected software and hardware....
If you take all together, with a modern setup, the sound file is processed by: 1.) the playing software (with EQ) 2.) the streaming device (with EQ or sound improving software e.g. the samsung galaxy) 3.) the recieving (BT) device with software EQ (e.g. the UE Boom).
With my setup, I can turn of EQ at any stage and this solves the problem for me. If your BT speaker does not allow changes of its sound processing, this could be an issue...

Just last month my phone did a system update that took what felt like forever. Whatever was updated seemed to fix the issue. I haven't had any trouble since. Sorry. I know that doesn't really answer your question.

Share your Viper4Android Settings

So I thought it would be a good idea to have a place to discuss the settings we use on Viper. I know it's tough to lock down a profile that works for everyone, since we all use different audio accessories, but maybe those of us that have learned a thing or two can help out those who don't know as much. My setup is below and my UI setting is on expert. I've also attached my profile and several .irs files.
My headphones are just $12 Skullcandy Earbuds, I have it turned off for my phone speaker (Video sounds great but notifications sound horrible), and my Bluetooth is usually streamed though my car, which has a Rockford Fosgate sound system with Tweeters, mids, a 10in sub-woofer, but it sounds great through other BT speakers I've tried as well. Full disclosure: I use TEKHD's rom, which comes with other sound mods as well, but I only use Viper and Dolby, so YMMV and all that.
To use the Profile and .irs files (impulse response) I have attached, Viper's UI setting must be set to Expert and Convolver enabled. There will then be a folder named Viper4Andriod in your main storage, and in that folder there should be one folder called Kernel and another called Profile. Place the Kernel.zip in the kernel folder and extract it, and place the Audiophile 2.zip in the Profiles folder and extract it. You can then select any of the .irs files as your impulse response and Audiophile 2 as your profile.
Headset (enabled):
Force Enable V4A - Off
Playback Gain Control: Off
Viper-DDC: Off
Spectrum Extenstion: On - Strength: 1.0
FIREqualizer: On - Preset: Custom (included in attached profile)
Convolver: On - Impulse Response: Dolby Pro Logic II.irs (attached) / Cross Channel: 15 Percent
Field Surround: On - Field Surround Strength: Slight / Mid Image Strength: Level 5
Differential Sound: Off
Headphone Surround +: Off
Reverberation: On - Room Size: 25m2 / Sound Field: 5m / Damping Factor: 0 Percent / Wet Signal: 0 Percent / Dry Signal: 80 Percent
Dynamic System: Off
Tube Sound Simulator (6n1j): Off
Viper Bass: On - Bass Mode: Natural Bass / Bass Frequency: 40 Hz / Bass Boost: 13.0 dB
Viper Clarity: On - Clarity Mode: Natural / Clarity: 3.5 dB
Cure Tech +: Off
AnalogX: Off
Output Gain: -8.0 dB
Channel Pan: 0.5 : 0.5
Limit Threshold: 0 dB
Phone Speaker (Disabled)
Bluetooth Device (Enabled)
This setup is almost identical to my Headset setup but with the below changes
Equalizer is slightly different (attached profile)
Bass Boost: 14.0 dB
Output Gain: -6.0
USB/Dock (Disabled)
The sound I get through my headphones and the Bluetooth system in my car is awesome. I hope you guys can use this profile as is or at least as a base and tweak to your liking. Enjoy.
Special thanks to @vibrantliker for the Audiophile profile I used as my base and @drbveb88 for providing the .irs files.

I have them both enabled, however now that I think about it, I haven't tried messing with the EQ with Convolver enabled.
Also, any ideas what could be causing that noise? I haven't really tried to narrow it down since it doesn't bather me too much, but if I can get rid of it I will.
EDIT: Just confirmed that toggling the EQ with Convolver enabled does in fact affect the sound.

I had the same issue when plugging my phone into my car stereo via AUX with the Audiophile 2 profile. Every time there was any sort of bass, it would sound all screechy and distorted. I turned off the convolver IRS "Dolby pro logic II" and all was good again.
EDIT: After looking around some more, sounds like the updated Viper app is causing issues with IRS processing which in turn creates the distorted sound. Not all IRS are effected though so I would suggest trying a different IRS that works until the Viper bug gets sorted out.

I guess it's one of those things that work for some but not for others. Maybe this setup only works on certain sound systems. I'd like to test with other BT speakers but unfortunately I don't have any. What's strange is that my BT setup and my Headset setup are almost identical and I don't have any distortion using either one.
@vibrantliker
I've worked out the weird hiss sound in between songs. @Lam pham was correct in stating it was the Playback Gain Control causing the issue. I disabled it and changed the Output Gain from -10.5 dB to -8.0 dB to make up for the loss in volume. I'll go ahead and update the OP.

Extremely low Bluetooth volume

Hi,
I have an issue with my Samsung Galaxy S8+.
If I try to play music via bluetooth to my speakers, the volume is very very low. The settings are on max and media volume sync can't be enabled.
I tried playing music with my Samsung Galaxy S7Edge and the volume was completely normal and very loud with nothing changed on the speakers.
I also tried this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8+/how-to/low-bluetooth-volume-car-fix-t3595530 with no result.
My BT speakers: https://www.trust.com/en/product/19367-tytan-2-1-subwoofer-speaker-set-with-bluetooth-black
My S8+:
Android 8.0.0
Stock
Knox triggered: 0
Never did any manual flash. Always just updated it.
Are there common reasons for this or good fixes? Or is it just a software bug?

It's oreo, they messed up the volume and everything audio on oreo, no fix right now I'm going to make a topic to see if it's possible to downgrade back to nougat.
Not just an Oreo thing. I've had the same issue with the Bluetooth in my car as well.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8+/how-to/low-bluetooth-volume-car-fix-t3595530
Look at that post. I tried the force close method and it helped.

it's amazing that you can't tell the difference at all, it's very noticeable, i am unable to hear anything when i receive calls in my headset either, this latest oreo update is broken.
found something online, it's something to do with media sync, try connecting the bluethooth device, then go to settings, bluethooth, 3 dots and select media sync, select on and make sure both phone and headphones volume is max and restart phone, anyone notice any difference? i'm testing it now.

Yea that was the first thing I have read about when I started searching for it. I wanted to try it, but it seems like my BT speakers are not compatible with it. It says that it isnt compatible when I try to activate it. Not sure if there is a workaround to make it working.
I don't think this is an Oreo specific problem. I've encountered this bug since marshmallow.
The only way I could get it to reset the volume back to max was when I used crdroid.
The volume would get set very low. I could open the global equaliser via Google music. And the volume would not change.
I would then access the global eq via another music player. Just make a tiny change to any parameters and boom. The volume is now set to the correct level again.
The moment I would use Google music to access the eq the volume would jump down again
My tablet is now on naosp and the volume issue has popped back up.
Doing the same procedure will reset the volume correctly.
It is rather annoying to have to do this.
I don't know what is causing the problem but it looks like the global eq ultimately effects the output volume disabled or enabled

No difference at all with three different devices I connect to. I do have media sync disabled already. Hopefully you get it figured out.
I've done a test on my S8+ now.
I downloaded the latest firmware and flashed it with a complete reset of the phone.

After the flash of it the BT issue is gone. This was done yesterday (4/10/2018). I will report back if the BT issue returns OR in like 2 weeks+ if everything is still fine.
GL everyone
new firmware released by samsung, lets hope this fixes the issue :S, i checked the notes and it does say fix for bluethooth.

do you need root for that though and i never had this issue in nougat, this issue first happened in oreo.
And i have a universal eq setting on a separate app called precise volume which does the same thing.

It dosn't work anyway, still the same, on a good note they have fixed the low volume for incoming calls on my headphones, just the music volume is still crap.
I think my only solution is another set of headphones that support LDAC but they are £300+ lol or to get a Microsoft music player, i have a laptop that even beats what the old volume was on nougat so maybe a Microsoft music player would be a good idea, gonna look around.
It was good while it lasted i guess.

I wasn't rooted before but since then have rooted via magisk systemless root. I can still use pay and bank access etc...
I'm using viper4android now and have also disabled the system EQ.
I have just got connects2 for my car last weekend.
On the odd occasion the volume will drop when opening automate(the driving launcher) which is set to launch playmusic on Bluetooth connection.
But as soon as I swipe down the volume jumps back up.

So you think it's worth rooting and do you notice any difference in audio quality?

Yeah for sure but be aware you might loose functionality on apps like banking and payments.
I use magisk to hide root so I can still use those functionalities.
Make sure you read into it first.
I've had a replacement connects2 module fitted today and all is going well.
Viper4android my EQ is absolutely amazing in comparison to other EQ and in my case the volume issue has been solved.
Actually it's really loud as I was used to the lower level.
Steps I took.
Unlock bootloader ( wiped my tablet)
Flash magisk
Install magisk manager
Added selinux module via magisk manager
Added viper4android via magisk manager
Disable global EQ
Set selinux to permissive
Install viper4android driver. Prompts when opening the app for the first time.
Reboot
And it's all good.
The bug with AutoMate seems to be tied to my maps speed prompting notification voice.
If it does revert to no EQ, I drag down from the top bar and it's back up again
I hope it works for you. Plus you now have a very awesome EQ as a bonus

Try enabling Developer mode (press Build Number 8 times). Then turn on Disable absolute volume. This de-links the phone volume control from the headset's volume control. Now you should be able to increase volume on both independently.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS. I had two pair of bluetooth headphones. A Cheap pair with volume control and a fancy pair of JBL Frees with no volume control. I could NOT figure out why sometimes the volume was great when they connected and other times it was VERY LOW all the while the cheap pair sounded great when I turned them up. I was at wits end blaming JBL and Samsung when it was a setting for Bluetooth devices.
Thanks again Huyi. Very glad I found this post.

Question Huawei MatePad 11: Overtuned speaker's sound by default

For music, this is normal. But when you watch a video with a lot of speech, it is very difficult to listen to such a sound. The voices have a lot of low frequencies. Mid frequencies are hard to distinguish. Any noise is cut between words!
In headphones, the first time you connect, the sound is exactly the same. But in the settings, you can switch from Huawei Histen Auto to Huawei Histen Natural. And the sound becomes normal.
But this cannot be done for speakers. Huawei Histen Auto is there forever.
Question: Can something be done about this? For example, disable with ADB?
did you find a solution ?

No.
Only a faint hope remains for a possible release of the HarmonyOS 3.

I think I found it,
uninstalling "com.huawei.imedia.sws" via adb and then rebooting seems to fix it
(hope it's not a placebo effect )
Got uninstallable packages from https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/debloater-huawei-matepad-11-2021.4475143/
And found the specific one by searching for "Histen adb uninstall"

I disabled it a long time ago. It seems nothing has changed - probably, it is only for headphones.
We need some reference video - for comparison : )

I didn't disabled it, I fully uninstalled it.
The settings isn't even available in the settings app.
I tried listening back to some bits of the first Ant-Man movie where I wasn't able to hear anything, now it's clearly audible and intelligible.
With it fully uninstalled I can hear every bg noises and whispers.
I'm pretty confident in the fact that it worked.
The sound clearly lost some quality but having the full range of sounds is better imo.
If you have a video we could use as a reference feel free to send the link and you listening experience

There are probably better examples, but so far I've only found these.
When the voice is sharper, the effect is stronger. And most noticeable at a volume level of five points from zero.
(When the application is disabled, there is no menu in the settings either.)
Just tried again but unfortunately I couldn't hear the sound issue a easly as I would've liked with your videos.
I tried with this one (the first 10secs), the background noises were really disturbing.
After uninstalling everything I could from adb and rebooting I feel like it's a little bit better but again, not sure if it's a placebo effect or not.
Will keep watching movies and videos on it for a few days and hope nothing disturbs me
if it doesn't work I'll try installing an external equalizer like Equalizer FX

I played this video on PC and on another tablet. It feels like our Huawei just doesn't have the best speakers. Their weak point is quiet sounds. And if you do not compare constantly, then, probably, you can get used to it.

I agree with you except on the last point. On some videos it becomes, at least for me, so bad that I had to switch with another device.
I'll keep looking for videos like that
I have a problem where Left & Right are switched with USB-C earbuds. Still waiting on HMOS 3.0 hoping it fix it.
