Background data setting

What exactly does the background data control? I turned it off & I tried loading a page on an app then closing to home screen and I can see from the status bar it does finish loading.
It controls things like checking mail, updating weather apps, facebook etc..
Basically it stops apps from updating without you clicking and telling them too..

Although it would make sense, I don't think this is true. Certain Apps still update when background data is turned off. I still receive e-mails and facebook notifications and weather updates, etc. So I am not sure the answer to the OP's question.

This.
Sent from my Captivate.
It doesn't completely stop syncing of things in the background; more like things like instant notifications when something is synced.
when on, it is always updating and checking to the cloud to make sure everything is up to date. When off syncing between accounts might take longer or done at intervals.
Anyone should correct me if I'm wrong though.

Intermittent notifications (mainly with Facebook)

I previously had a Galaxy S3. With the Facebook app, I would receive notifications just fine.
With my Nexus 5, some notifications come through, but some don't. For example, last night a friend posted something on my timeline and I got a notification about that instantly. Later on, I posted something on my timeline via my PC and then left the site. A few hours later I went back to Facebook and 3 people had commented on my post, but I hadn't received any notifications on my phone about it. I've checked the settings and I have all notifications turned on for Facebook.
Anyone else having issues like this? Notifications do work on the phone, but I've never had an issue like this before, where sometimes I get them and sometimes I don't.

[Android M Preview 3] SMS Issues

I'm not sure where else to post this and I'm having trouble finding anyone with similar issues over search! So I don't know if it's a Preview 3 bug or if I'm going crazy.
Straight to it - my text messages are disappearing randomly. I had an entire text conversation last night using Hangouts and today those messages are all gone. I had a new text this morning that I could see when first opening Hangouts in the preview spot, but clicking on the conversation shows my last sent message from yesterday at 4pm. Nothing after that. Messenger app shows nothing past that either.
Initially I had dirty flashed Preview 3 over Preview 2 and had this exact same issue right away, but I wiped and clean installed Preview 3 the same day and haven't had a problem until today. I also noticed if I switch my default app to Messenger, I can't send any messages. It just immediately tells me 'touch to resend' and it doesn't even try to send. Hangouts messages go through just fine but they are still disappearing right after I send one, even.
Pushbullet was doing the exact same thing with disappearing texts previously but they were all still there on the phone so I thought maybe that was messing with me, but I have since uninstalled it and the issue is persisting. Rebooting my phone makes no change.
I'm having the same issue on my Nexus 6. Only on Android M DP3, too. Also, I can't send SMS messages either. I hope there's an easy temporary fix until Google fixes it.

I have the exact same issue... I tried clearing hangouts and messenger cache and data, still not working... I'm not sure if a factory reset would do it.. has anyone tried that?
I'm having the exact same issues, the only way I have been able to fix it is by using texted sms Google needs to get this sorted asap
I haven't had any issues. Are you flashing zip versions or fastboot img's?

I updated via ota from stock dev preview 2
Strange. I just dirty flashed the img files through fastboot over p2 and have had no issues whatever

I have had the same issues. I can see the text in pre-view, but then it's gone.
Only way for me to get texting working again was to disable both Messenger and Hangouts and loaded another SMS app (textra)
Now my texts are reliable again.
There are reports on the Hangout forums that Google is working on the issue.
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/hangouts/GI_GoaFWzRI;context-place=forum/hangouts
I'm having exactly the same issue (with stock Messenger and Hangouts).
Yesterday received some texts which I later noticed weren't in my list of messages. Only noticed the missing texts when a text I was trying to send was repeatedly failing..
I also updated OTA from dev preview 2, Nexus 5.
Will try a third party app temporarily...
I too am having the same problem on Preview 3 on my N5. It seems to happen in both Hangouts and Messenger. Text seem to randomly disappear from the conversations, sometimes entire conversations are deleted.
SMS Fix
Reboot to safe mode and then send yourself an sms. After rebooting to normal sms should work correctly.

That seems to work, even though in safe mode I don't have access to a messaging app (neither Hangouts or Messenger are available), I sent one to myself, and then rebooted, and now Messenger seems to work. Fingers crossed that it keeps working. Thanks!
That link is nor viable. How do I reboot to safe mode?

Thank you google.
Use safe mode to find problem apps
Make sure your device's screen is on, then press & hold the Power button.
In the box that opens, touch & hold Power off.
You'll see a “Reboot to safe mode” box. Touch OK.
Your device will start up in safe mode. Try using your device normally.
Pushbullet might be the issue
Found this issue this morning with my Nexus 5 with Android 6.0 preview 3...
After a quick search, found someone saying that uninstalling Pushbullet and restarting the phone would fix it, and it did for me actually!
If you guys have Pushbullet installed, give it a try. Hopefully Pushbullet will fix it soon!

Did you suddenly receive messages you were missing or did it just allow new messages to be visible again?

It just allowed new messages to be visible, I didn't get back any of the old texts that had been lost.
Good call. Yep looks like Pushbullet was the problem, not hangouts.
Uninstalled and loaded up Mighty Text. Hangouts working fine so far.
I had to deactivate Pushbullet SMS sync and send myself an SMS while in safe mode.
Jeez, I'm wondering how many SMS I didn't receive... that's really bad !

How to keep Apps running in the Background?

Hi everyone, ever since the update, my apps stop running in the background when I close the app. Example: I don't get Whatsapp notifications anymore unless I open the app and keep it open. If I close all open apps, I will no longer receive any of the notifications for any of them.
I went into the battery settings disabled battery saver mode but that didn't do anything.
I would appreciate any help you could provide.

It's apparently one of the issues with the latest OTA update, where closing all running apps will terminate the background processes associated with the apps closed. Prior to the update and the Close All button being added to the recent apps list, I don't think it had this problem (I don't use Whatsapp, but my Skype and Discord notifications still come through even if I don't have them on my recent apps list).
This is a little frustrating. Noticed that I wasn't getting any notifications from tasker, pushover, textra, hangouts, inbox and etc.
Also noticed that pushover will not update unless it is off of wifi. All my other devices receive notifications on this wifi. IE nothing blocked.
I have had to open all the programs that I want to receive notifications from, open. Not the best work around.

I noticed that on occasion there will be small text under the new button that says "long press to set up apps that could run in the background" I do it but it doesn't seem to do anything, maybe free up some of the RAM but that's about it. I'm wondering if there is a bug and if it's supposed to show something.
Has anyone else tried the long press?
As of now all I do is keep a folder on the desktop labeled background apps. It helps big time when I accidentally tap the close all button. But my solution as of now is to keep things open that don't seem to work in the background. I've been experimenting with what works and it seems like in some recent app updates they begin to work without being open. I know for sure that facebook and now facebook messenger work without being open, as well as some google services. I have a memory clearer app that I use when I'm not using my phone so it clears whatever it can without killing the apps. But that's what I have as of now, trial and error to figure out what I need to leave open and what I can close. And I strongly recommend the folder, I have had many times where I accidentally close everything and forget what I had to leave open.
It's a bummer though, I just bought the phone and then this update came out. Kinda kills the excitement of getting a new awesome phone if I have to deal with this frustration :/ Other than that, it's definately a nice step up from a Samsung S4.

Misbehave as in not show anything after a long press?
Yes, nothing happens anytime I try it. After reboot, the first time I pull up the running apps is when I get the prompt. After the first long press after a reboot, the prompt is gone. If I have an app open and then I do the long press, I am taken back to the desktop, but no matter what I try, nothing seems to happen after the long press other than being taken back to the desktop if I had an app open.
I have the same issue, I thought it was a Internet connection issue (see my thread) but after digging deeper realised my background apps werent running after closing them and the long press option does nothing.
I have the same problem. Any solution?

I've just installed the new update and it looks like the issues I had with background apps closing when clearing all apps has been fixed. I've got no apps running in the foreground yet can see Whatsapp, Fitbit, etc still running and I'm receiving notifications for them.

Gmail not pushing

Been noticing lately on the S8+ that my emails through the Gmail app arent coming through. I'm receiving no notifications about them unless i open the app and pull it down to refresh. Was working fine when I first received the phone, not sure if anyone else is experiencing this? On T-mobile.
Only thing I can think is maybe something I disabled in package disabler but i doubt thats it. I didnt touch anything to do with gmail
Never had this problem, however for non Gmail accounts added to it, i.e. outlook, after deleting an email, a minute later, the email will reappear. It's getting rather annoying, especially when in deleting 5 at a time, they just come back and seem to go away after the 2nd deletion

I've had the same issue. If i delete them from the lock screen, they show deleted. Reappear for a second, buzz and then vanish. this happened on my stock nexus 6 as well so its not a GS8 thing.

Yes i also had a Nexus 6 and the problem was there too and also sorry I didn't read your post properly but I do get the problem you have. When I go to the app, pull the side panel which shows my email accounts, there will be a badge number over it and I have to pull down to refresh. Same problem happened on my Nexus 6 as well, most likely an app problem

hopefully its an app problem. they also need to fix that delete/double notification thing. especially when you delete like 10 emails, it then buzzes 10 times. super annoying

Any updates on this, I'm no longer getting push notifications for my Outlook account. I have to physically go and refresh.

Yea I am still not receiving emails unless I go in and refresh. This is weird because gmail worked on this phone properly, not sure why it randomly stopped. I tried to send an email and it got stuck on "queued" for a little and then sat on sending for a few seconds as well.
All other push notifications are working fine, instagram, facebook, snapchat, text messages, nest, etc... but gmail isn't working. Not sure if its something i turned off in package disabler? did you use that app at all?
update. i have no idea what i did but its working again.
i went into every gmail setting possible, turned it off and back on again. i forced my google account to resync. i disabled notifications and turned them back on. i disabled network access in the background, then turned it back on. ive tested it a few times by sending emails to myself. i also received a notification from a newsletter as well. it is working for now and im happy. hopefully it doesnt stop.
Yep, not sure what's happening with Gmail but I had this issue now on my Nexus6p....
next question, does anyone know how to get rid of the annoying double notification when deleting an email from the notification bar? if its on my lock screen and i expand them and then delete, it deletes and then a split second later it pops up again and vibrates then vanishes. same thing happened on my stock nexus 6
