Thanks to some of the guys that helped me out with answers in this Post I have now got the TF.
As advised, I got one with a serial number that begins with B6
Came home and tried to set it up ... Wifi was required and so I enabled it, but no luck ... refuses to find my home SSID. Turns out that I have to go to regulatory domain and change the number of channels to 14.
I am in brothers house as I have come to Australia for holiday. It is here that the above problems arose. He tried to help by attempting to change the channel he uses to a different one, but he can't remember his setup password.
A search on xda reveals a number of guys having problem with the missing option of setting Regulatory Domain. Anyone knows how to get around this trouble?
On my Nexus S I have a custom rom that has the option to set Regulatory Domain, but don't think it was there originally.
Thanks for any help/ advise.
PS ... I have 3.1 on the TF
Is it possible to change Serial Number of device, which is show in GUI? And HOWTO !?
I have rooted device.
I found one of possible locations with db settings related to it.
cd /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases
sqlite3 settings.db
sqlite> select * from secure where name like '%_id' ;
2|hardware_id|XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
25|android_id|XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
I'm able to change these values and initial value hardware_id is show as device serial number at:
Settings -> About Tablet -> General Info -> Serial Number
After change of hardware_id, in settings.db, Serial Number is not changed to new in GUI.
Also tried to reboot device - do not help.
Does anybody has ideas how to do it?
Why?

What you're seeing is the hardware id which is similar to say a phone's IMEI #.
It can't be change. It's not the same as your "Serial/build" number on the bottom of your tablet or on the outside of the box.
This is driving me nuts and I don't remember how I did it before.
How can one change their network ID (the ID it would appear as over networks such as seeing it through your router) on Android?
i explored my sg note3 and found this

the problem is i cant figure out what this is, and where to get the pin
because i cant remember setting it up
i tried the usual pins i have but to no avail.. no i only have 10/15 attempts
can someone walk me out of this feature?
It is a feature, which sets, whether it asks for the SIM PIN when you turn on the phone or not.
PIN is given with the SIM, so if you don't know it, you will have to contact your operator.
My phone has stopped logging to mobile network recently and I have found out it has incorrect IMEI number: 350000000000006.
I would like to change it to the correct number that is printed on the phone cover.
I have rooted the phone, installed Xposed and Device ID Changer Pro. The app says the number has been modified and displays correct one, but when I use *#06# it still displays incorrect IMEI as above. Also logging to mobile networks is still not active.
The phone is Galaxy S6, Android 7.0. It has been purchased some 2 years ago as used phone. I suppose I should contact the seller but I don't think I can reach him any more.
Does anybody know why there is mismatch between what Device ID Changer shows compared to *#06#?
Take note that Android's Device ID ( to be correct: ANDROID_ID ) isn't same as IMEI: 2 totally different things.
FYI:
Android_ID is a 64-bit quantity that is generated and stored when the device first boots. ANDROID_ID is not unique for an Android device, it even can be NULL.
The IMEI number is your Android device's own identification number - what contains origin, model, and serial number. There isn't one device that has the same IMEI number as another device

Click to collapse
I understand that. Device ID changer gives an option to update both, and a few more.
One more question: should I be able to request Samsung to revert the IMEI to the original one?
No.
You can't fix IMEI using the app.
You can just spoof ID using the app.
