TWRP and Root question - OnePlus 7 Pro Questions & Answers

Anyone have a noob friendly method to installing TWRP and magisk on my GM1917? I've rooted before but the OP7 Pro is stumping me

I don't think twrp is ready yet. Someone got magisk going with a patched boot image. I suggest you unlock the boot loader and wait a bit.

Though TWRP can't decrypt data, you can still flash and sideload magisk

Which version of TWRP bluespark?

I just currently got the latest ota and let it install and I installed magisk from the manager by choosing to install to inactive partition after ota. That worked flawlessly and was able to keep root. But I lost TWRP of course. I was using the official TWRP. I've been noticing everyone going to TWRP bluespark recovery. But which one do I download??? From what I understand there is a version for oos android 8 Oreo and a version for oos android 9 pie. I'm on official oos pie. So which one do I need?

Just take the latest official TWRP and you are fine. Trust me.

Thank you. But still would like to know if I decide to use bluespark version.
Sure. If you want to use Blu Spark TWRP use this one twrp-3.2.3-x_blu_spark_v9.86_op6
IMG and zip files are here https://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/?id=27466#downloads
You can use TWRP official or Blu Spark TWRP. What ever you like. Blu Spark is recommended for people coming from oos beta to stable

May I ask what the difference is?
Just to add a note to you for next ota.
After ota is installed go to magisk manager
Press download
Search for twrp a/b
Install (don't reboot)
Now go to main screen and press install
Choose to inactive slot (after ota)
This way you keep both twrp and root
Happy flashing

Magisk Question

So I haven't rooted anything since note 5 so excuse me if it's a dumb question. I'm good going to root with magisk. I see some people talking about a patched boot.img and others saying just flash magisk. So before I brick my phone , can I just flash magisk or do I need to flash a patched boot.img first?
Thanks

Just boot TWRP and flash magisk,. If you want t wrp to stick flash the zip before you flash magisk
Just flash Magisk and you'll be rooted. Patching the boot.img was the way to root when the phone first came out.
If you want twrp, install TWRP and flash magisk via twrp
If you don't want twrp just flash the magisk patched boot.img.
Please read up though on which direction u want to go.
Got it going. Thanks
If my phone is sim unlocked and then oem unlocked. Can I just flash magisk ?

Hi,
Yes you can, flash the latest installer via Magisk as a module, please note however that you need to reboot into TWRP and flash Magisk again.

Successful Root on DP3

Was anyone able to successfully root DP3? If so, what were your steps?

Well I wouldn't root a Dev Preview if I was you, it may be really unstable.
For the root, there's a general method. Once your Bootloader is unlocked you have to extract the boot.img from the zip you flashed to update your phone to DP3 and patch it with Magisk. Here's a video about that:
There is some that has successfully rooted op8 Pro but I have tried every method that I know on op 8 including patching os11 boot.img with Canary and stable magisk, flash through Chinese twrp (twrp boots but cannot decrypt) and even fastboot flashed a op8 Pro boot. Img but I've not been successful as of yet.. have asked around in telegram also.. seems magisk sees os11 as os10 or something like that.. root will come in sure
Edit: I now have root on op8 DP3..

there are a couple posts in the guides section
I've tried it several times and never works. Canary and an boot image called new on pro forum and not working at all. I tried IMG from dp3 no luck. I'm done for now.

Root IN2017 with TWRP or not?

I saw a post talking about rooting without TWRP. Any advantage of installing TWRP to root? Just flash Magisk via TWRP to get root, correct? I'm still on Android 10. If I install TWRP, can I still install update from Tmobile? Thanks.

When rooting there are no major advantages of installing twrp, but after rooting twrp is super useful! So you might as well root with it (two birds with one stone). Yup you just have to flash magisk with twrp and you're done. Idk about the T-mobile updates tho.
