Am I missing the always on display? - OnePlus 7 Pro Questions & Answers

Mine only shows if I touch or lift the phone. By design?
Sent from my GM1915 using Tapatalk

It has no always on display.

There is a post here somewhere and it said they are looking into it but want to optimize that feature so it doesn't drain the battery

It's under ambient display and there is no always on for this device

I thought android had AOD baked in, but oneplus hides the menu?
Has anyone looked for it using Nova shortcuts?

No, it does not exist on this phone.

Anyone have success with custom watch extensions?

I have noticed a few that look really sharp (eg those from SmartWatch Bueraux) and wondered how much they chew into battery (even those running "low-power" mode) and whether the normal notification pop-ups work while running the custom face?
With those aftermarket ones I tried (2 or 3) the battery will drain in 1,5 days. Not like 4 days as with stock ones.
Notifications won't go full screen, but in most apps they are shown in the status bar. If you click that bar, it will open the notification in full screen.
Thanks, that is hat I was afraid of. I guess I will stick with one of the stock ones and hope Sony offers more in a future update.

i was thinking the same... Anyone noticed how much this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kaybit.smartwatch.customwatch affect the battery? It is said that the low power is supported with the monochrome display and should last several days (sw2).

I purchased this one in the hopes to replace the stock watchfaces. I keep installing it once in a while but the longest I used it about an hour. The reason for that is basically the notifications. No full page notifications kills the custom watch for me.
Most of the custom watches in the play store have the low power mode enabled. But the problem is for them to be useful, watch has to be always connected to the phone. And somebody explained this somewhere I can't remember. The clock face is simply a picture or sorts, and every time it changes (like minute or second) another pic is sent to the watch. I maybe wrong about this. But this might be the reason for battery drain.
So until Sony opens the firmware for full replacement of the stock watchfaces, all custom watches will be crippled here and there. If Sony wants to be a contender in the smartwatch arena, they should really figure out which direction they should go and that direction in my mind is basically being OPEN.

Multiple pre-buying questions

Hi,
I'm seriously considering to order the mate9 at the USA tomorrow, have some pre-buying questions:
1. Does the battery lastsat least 12 hours? I really seek a phone that won't be able to drain a bettery in a single day
2. Can you unlock/wake the phone using the fingerprint only (no pressing on the power button)?
3. Any technique to achieve something similar to s7 always on display (see notifications without opening the phone)?
Thanks!
cheers,
Yoni

You can set Mate 9 to wake screen on notification but it seems to not support, at least in full, the regular implementation of interactive lock screen notifications. That said, I do recall a setting somewhere to allow text input on notifications (I think specifically for lock screen). But in daily use, some app notifications work on lock screen as expected and some don't.
See thread below for more detailed discussion:

# 1 - the battery life is better than any phone that I have ever used - and I've used just about everything. The most I have got the battery down to in one long day of heavy use is 44%.
#2 - the fingerprint reader takes a bit of patience to get it properly registered, but then it works brilliantly. The reader is placed so that it falls nicely just under the index finger, and wakes up the phone or answers a call with just a touch.
I see what was happening with lock screen notifications and it is due to funky (stupid) way the phone manages things. When an app installs the phone restricts permissions as it this is is appropriate (think you can turn this off but I did after installing most apps). Anyways, certain (most apps) had the diary content on lock screen off so I set it on and expect more normal lock screen notification behavior now.

3. Buy a smartwatch you can get a moto 360 cheap on eBay right now. I personally wouldn't use any 'always on' apps on a device with an LCD as it might cause a lot of battery drain. I haven't tried though. -something to note, huawei fixed the notification icons in the last update.
Great answers, much appreciated.
In overall would you recommend the phone? my other option is s7 edge which seems to tick all boxes only I adore bigger screens.
p.s. side question - any idea whether I can scroll using the fingerprint?

scroll using fingerprint sensor brings down the notifications.
I had note 7 and minus the s pen this is a very good device to keep me going until the next note is launched....waiting impatiently.
I tried the oneplus 3 but prefer this much more.
Absolutely recommend. Had S7 Edge and was so tired of the Samsung BS, tacky TW software and design and screen too small. Mate 9 is far better device.

Note: I don't have this phone, yet. Considering it pretty hard. I'm in U.S., so will probably be at least January.
3 - Regarding notifications, that is important to me as well. I posted a question about the LED, and sounds like that is a possibility, for use with something like Lightflow. For example, I have the led Green for email, Blue for task notifications, Red for missed call, Flashing red for messages, etc.
If the LED doesn't work out, another possibility is something lke the NoLed app. It will work similar as I discussed above, but simulates an led on the screen.

notification light

I know on the launch they talked about the light on the edge of the screen.
I don't see this option on my phone or I am missing something??

You're not missing something, it's supposed to come in a future update soon. I think it was mentioned in that ask me anything on oneplus.com
Think it flashes for one second. Dont have the phone but I think you can enable it in display settings somewhere

Reviewers already shown that it's already working.
I don't have the device yet to tell the steps find the edge lighting setting.

Mine has the light on the edges with notification

I have it now. I literally tapped everything that had notification on it. Will have to investigate to find which option exactly it is

There is no option that I found to turn it on or off. It just works....When you receive at text you will receive a blue light is going to appear down the curved side of the glass. It happens really fast. They should really have an option to extend how long you will see it for.

You probably just need to have ambient display enabled for new notifications. Bit of a useless feature mind you.Needs inprovment to flash or pulse but could then become a battery drain
According to an ask me anything session in their forums they are looking into making it more customizable and are also considering adding Always On Display:
Q: Any enhancements in OOS to utilize the curved display in 7Pro?
A: Edge lighting for notification would be a handy feature and we are still considering to add more features that will utilize the curved display in future.
Q: Are the edge notification colors customizable?
A: Not as of now but its something we are considering for future updates
Q: Is there any consideration of added a Always On Display feature? I currently own the Galaxy S8 and I actually like the AoD feature.
A: It's still under consideration. We are working on improving power consumption efficiency for this feature before we implement it.

The edge lighting is pretty useless as is. It flashes for one cycle then disappears. I don't understand how OnePlus thinks this is of any use. Normal people don't stare at their phones all day hoping to catch a glimpse of a notification. I also don't want to have to pick up the phone or tap the screen to check. They opted for no LED, so make edge lighting persistent and customizable. The promise of this feature was actually one of the main reasons I upgraded from the 6T. The 7 Pro is a very impressive device but edge lighting in its current form is worthless.

I was just getting ready to post this. I used it on my 6T, S10+ (untill Holey Light came out) and now also using it on my 7 Pro.
Once set up it works great.
Still don't have the phone, but does this app cause the phone not to go to deep sleep (causing loads of wakelocks)? And does it contribute to screen on time? (meaning that the phone thinks that you're using the screen while it's only the edge lighting that is on).
Makes sense to stay until cleared (comparing with Samsung devices all the time clock on). At the end this is the same display which can handle it without too much battery drainage

AOD, notification light? Alternatives.

Ordered my OP7P today buy I'm quite ready to cancel it. I knew that there's no led notification light but was 100% convinced that there will be some sort of alternative. From what I can read there's nothing like that? No AOD, no nothing. I mean - really? Any third party apps?
Please don't tell me that I have to DT2W every time or worse - lift my phone to check battery percentage (if on charge) or notification icons? I found similar thread on OPs community forum that was closed after 4 replies and with suggestion of.... getting a Samsung phone. Bloody joke.
So, any alternatives?
Well you have to tap it once to wake up te clock, and immediately after you picked the Phone the clock is also waking up. For me it's fine. For you maybe annoying. Some guy here made a notofication light on the screen but for now at least it's battery draining
Lift to wake is very sensitive where even slight movements will trigger ambient display.
I'm on a custom ROM though and this has AOD baked in but even if I was still on OOS, lift to wake is perfect for me.
I remember Ambient Display from Nexus phone and it was terrible. But at least I had notification light back then.
Someone did make an app for the 6t and I think it works for the 7 pro also. I think it's called notifybuddy.
NotifyBuddy is great, but don't use it if you use OK GOOGLE as they clash. Use pixel pulse instead
NotifyBuddy indeed is great, but it totally drains your battery. I am now using "Plus Beat" (find in Play Store) which uses your complete sides of the screen. Per app customizable, works great together with Renovate Ice

Plus Beat also reported by others as clashing with ok google.
Possible. But since I do not use Google stuff, that is all frozen, so wouldn't know (neither would want to test)

Just download an AOD app l on the play store or install a custom rom.
But canceling your order simply because of that is a little weird... Especially when there's loads of options available. Also, did you not look up all the details about the phone before ordering? If so, maybe next time look at ALL the info for the device you're about to buy.
Assuming something with no research, especially with new technology, will always bite you in the ass
I use this one here closest thing I found to an actual aod https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.newgen.alwayson

Touch sensitivity issue after Android 11 install

Anyone else having a problem with screen touch after upgrading to 11?
I'm finding dead spots on the screen that won't respond to touch. Sometimes if I rotate the phone 90 degrees and then back, it'll work again. Sometimes not.
I'm on a carrier unlocked, locked bootloader, unrooted, stock 3xl
Curiously, have you looked for signs of battery swelling?
Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
Battery swelling was my first suspicion, but there is no evidence of of that
Could it be Nova launcher? Seems Pixel launcher is less of an issue. Anyone having Nova issues in 11 (sorry if this isn't the place for this question, just troubleshooting my 3xl)
I've tried installing Nova on my Pixel 3XL. Usually I use the pixel launcher. Playing around with Nova, I didn't notice any dead spots on my phone. Any specific tasks you are doing when you notice it?
Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
I haven't noticed any issues at all on my Pixel 3xl after upgrading.
Sent from my SM-N976U 5G using XDA-Developers Legacy app
No specific tasks, but definitely seems worse on nova. Examples are the shutter button in the camera, X buttons in the corners to close a window or app, sporadically latent spots when navigating some apps.
In pixel launcher, it seems to be much better.
Maybe I'll contact the Nova developers.
Thanks for the input...
There were some news reports of Pixel 4s with touchscreen sensitivity after the update. I'm not sure if your issue might be related, but the reports indicated that some screen protectors might make it more likely.
Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
I know this is a Pixel 3 XL forum, but I have the exact same problem on my brand new Pixel 5, and I couldn't find anything about this anywhere else. In my case, using any third party launcher + gesture navigation causes this issue. Whenever an ad starts playing fullscreen and the phone is in landscape mode, it then becomes pretty much impossible to close it. As OP said, the only way is to turn the phone on the opposite side. The only launcher unaffected by this problem is the stock Pixel Launcher but it's so barebones compared to the others that I'd rather go back to three button navigation
