[DONATE to ggow] - HD 8/10 Custom Roms (Get Hardware) - Fire HD 8 and HD 10 General

After the success of campaigns to get hardware for BL Unlock/Root for the newest HD 8/10, I figured we as a community could maybe do the same for custom ROMS. If you've been around any of the other Amazon device threads, I'm sure you've noticed XDA Senior Member @ggow and his plethora of custom roms/support for these devices. If your like me, he's helped extend the life and usefulness of your older Amazon devices way past their prime! Anyways, after contacting ggow through DM, he has shown interest in continuing to support Amazon hardware, including the newest Fire HD 8/10. From what I know, he has very limited access to a friend's HD10 for a short time. So, if you have the means and you want help, please consider donating to @ggow through his profile page so that he may purchase his own HD 8 and HD 10.
Disclaimer: I'm not getting any kickbacks or a share of the pot. I just want a custom ROM for my new hardware and believe @ggow can make it happen. Here is my DM and his response just for the sake of transparency. If you've got questions, I'm sure @ggow can give more information now that this thread is live.

Hey ggow,
I didn't want to just tag you in a random thread, so I figured I'd dm you. I was just wondering if you had considered possibly making custom roms for the newest Amazon devices given the recent rooting/unlocking achieved on them. I know a couple of the developers got funded to buy a tablet through donations so they could work on them and figured maybe something like that could be done for you if it will help. I know your pretty busy with all your other projects and RL, so I understand if this is something you don't want to do. Either way, thanks for all the Roms you do make. Especially the CM/Nexus ROM for Ford. Definitely made that tablet last me longer than it should have! Best of luck and sorry for the random dm.

That would be useful, a fire HD8 and HD10 would latest gen would be useful. I want to support the newer devices. I have just finished building one for 7th gen amazon fire. My goal is provide a stable a stable custom rom for each device that can be unlocked.
I will have access to a friend's HD10 but only for a short time.

Is not Rom building kind of a full time job?
UK prices for HD10 look high, 110 pounds on a rare sale is like the regular US price of $150!

And since they aren't too dissimilar, having @ggow work on the HD8 I think both devices could benefit from it

We're in dire need of a 2017 hd8 bootloader unlock before further progress can be made. I've asked around a bit but haven't been able to get any real clue how we could use other unlock methods as a guide. Or for that matter, anyone with the time/inclination/skill/hardware to help. Poop etc

The HD8 being talked about in thread is the 2018 version. The HD8 2018 has bootloader unlock and can progress onto custom roms.

Yup

I bricked mine and I had to get a free replacement. I hope amazon doesn’t notice about the pry marks on the corners for bootrom flash. How can I avoid doing that on the replacement device

Don't know for how long, but looks like a used HD 8 is £53.99 currently on Amazon.co.uk (Still $71 usd which is ridiculous, imo)

Any thoughts on when you might release an experimental rom for suez? I'm debating pulling the trigger on one since my Fire 7 THOR died.

Agreed, I would LOVE to know if we will get root on the Ultra and Maxx before I buy one of them!
I really hope someone works on root, I would love to get this phone but I need wireless tethering!
Root will end up coming. I believe the verizon moto x will be the same root method.
Unlocked, thats the million dollar question.
I'd like to know if anyone is working on it as well...
I don't necessarily need to be able to do ROMs, but I'd like to get root to see if I can get the AOSP browser on this damn thing. I need the bookmark syncing with Chrome on my PC, but the Chrome app just blows. AOSP browser works perfectly.
I, too, assume it'll be a similar root process as the Moto X since they're almost completely identical. But the SW on the Moto X is even less modified than on our Droids, so that small difference might be part of a significant difference when it comes down to rooting. So far it looks as if you've got to unlock the bootloader of the Moto X via the moto dev site, then flash a rooted kernel. That won't translate to the Ultra because of the different kernel :/
I'm giving it the two weeks that the return policy is for root to arrive. If it isn't available by then I'll eat the $35 restock fee and get myself a 32GB S4 (and go through all the trouble again of transferring phones...). Tethering is far too important to be potentially stuck without it.

Motorola doesn't offer a bootloader unlock for this phone, so we can't go that route yet. It will have to be a real exploit with temp root if /system modifications can't survive reboots.

Took like 9 months to unlock the Razr HD, but you have the potential help of the Moto X to speed things along (All carriers). Although I don't foresee many developers jumping on the Moto X bandwagon based on the specs. I dunno, it could go either way. Good luck to you all, I'm ditching my Razr HD for a G2

Right now you have very, very little chance of getting a root. And about a bootloader unlock. I would more than likely guess that was a one time deal. So if you bought this and are waiting for a root/bootloader unlock. You are going to be disappointed.
I'm sure root will find its way. The unlocked boot loader makes me nervous though. I'm curious if something like safestrap will make its way to these phones. I'm still hoping that the combined attention of the four devices and the popularity of the moto x will get these devices an unlocked boot loader.

A little off topic - think the One has a better chance? I know HTC isn't normally your wheelhouse, but with your connections and all...
Ignore the prompt to update for now, no matter how annoying it might be. Like someone else said, with so many devices sharing common architecture root is just a matter of time. Bootloaders are a different story.

it's hard to tell.
I have the s4 which I will dump soon, as I am about 99% sure unlock is not coming.
I am keeping my s3 though.
I also have the HTC One, I DO feel we will get unlock at the least, and hopefully S-OFF.
I usually give all my phones at least 6 months before moving on.
Thinking of going to buy the moto x just for kicks as I never own moto device and the X peeks my interest, I feel I could use it and toss it around and not have to worry about it and it can take it, compared to my HTC one that's like a watch (jewelery.)
Curious to play with the different software, HTC Sense is and always has been favorite, Touchwiz grew on me greatly, and want to check out this moto x. /I usually can't live without root, but I wouldn't be using the phone activated, just to have it.
i'm sure Root will be re shortly .
Hope in @djrbliss for root and bootloader exploit , he has hacked Razr HD bootloader here

I hope it does come but this phone will just be my backup phone for when I'm giving my S4 a breather, I took care of my S4 before that software update thankfully.

There very well may be, but moto is not going to make that public in most cases. It's easier to patch in silence and not tip anyone off.

Yeah the main thing keeping me holding onto this S4 is the fact it has MDK. Otherwise I generally am liking the One better now - though the S4 camera sure can take some great shots and tends to last a bit longer on the battery. The Maxx is pretty awesome... camera is mediocre, but better once you get used to its idiosyncrasies. It's basically pure Android, so if you love sense, you might be bored with it. But if there's any phone that hiccups less than the One, it's this one. Incredibly smooth and snappy experience. And obviously great battery life... Voice controls are pretty cool, too. Not perfect, but still pretty cool

Verizon bootloader unlock soon?

I know, I know, WHY DID I BUY THE VERIZON PIXEL 2? Well, i actually got it as a gift from my parents, they got the BestBuy 100$ off so they thought it was a good deal. I personally had a Nexus 6P but my battery was completely dying and i bought it from newegg so i cant rma it. I got it today and i love it, but its so weird without the ability to use still like greenify, adblock, titanium backup, etc. So is there a guess of when there will be a bootloader unlock if there will be one?

What do you mean? Why would you not update? You will never get root on that device so either sell it or live with it. Not updating will only make your device less secure. Besides, you'll need to update to the November patch in order to fix the Krack wifi exploit. This is not a silly assumption, this is fact. I'd be more than happy to eat my words at some point but for now the sugar is in the back of the cabinet.
All we need is a bounty thread at this point. You know that's next right? This way everyone complaining about Verizon can go to one place to rant and not all over the boards.

Agreed. But if he got it as a gift then his options might be limited if it was not bought outright. I'd just say live with it, most people aren't rooting any longer anyway. There is no root yet although that might be coming when images are released. Bootloader unlock, however, on the Verizon Pixels is not going to happen anytime soon, if ever. And to the OP, @Etheralrealm you don't need TiB if you're not flashing roms really. Greenify is a waste with this device and Adaway has some VPN alternatives. I'd just enjoy the device and forget about messing with it.
Yeah, it was bought on a payment plan so my options with selling it are kind of limited.

I hope so. I may know a thing or two about unrootable devices. I had the Galaxy S5 Active. I think it finally got root after 3 years. I currently have a Snapdragon Galaxy S7 Edge. It has a root method, however it's unstable.
I wonder why the HD10 got root, though. Shouldn't it be harder to root newer devices? I've almost all but given up on the Android rooting scene. So much harder than it used to be.

No. The sole reason HD 10 got rooted is that they couldn't find a decent kernel source for that Mediatek chipset. (And they are not clever enough to build one from scratch.) And, it seems, that any device with that Mediatek chipset can be rooted with DirtyCOW.
They don't sell the devices for such a low price compared to other devices for nothing, it's almost as they don't profit by selling the device itself. They earn money by promoting their ecosystem (like Fire Launcher, Appstore) and Special Offers. Maybe Amazon 'will' stop making their devices a pain in the neck, but then the prices are bound to increase drastically.

yup. some people may not LIKE that you can't root a phone, but the actual percentage of those that won't actually buy the phone for this reason is minuscule.
otherwise, the first time a phone manufacturer sees their sales actually explode after releasing unlooked bootloaders, they'd always unlock it, but that's simply not the case
Ok I think you're being quite short sighted here, allow me to explain a little.
People who root their phones, usually the same ones who mod and develop ROMs and love a tinker, generally speaking the techie in the family, the one who your family tends to turn to when they have an upgrade come around or need something fixing.
Those very same people are more than likely to recommend a phone which has the ability to root, bootloader unlock and modify than they are one which has a completely locked down eco system.
You can say what you like, you can say I'm full of it, but I've seen how people react to a company changing its principles in regards to bootloader unlocking, HTC did this once, they then reversed their decision after seeing an immediate decline in sales, not solely due to the device either, it was the people's influence which caused it, then after two not so great phones later, they were a struggling company, and make no mistake, HTC was a colossal company which was on the up and up, bare in mind they made a lot of what android is today.
Huawei are making the exact same mistake because they overlooked how important that 1% is and the influence that they have over the vast majority of other users who value their opinion and will commit to a purchase on their say so.
It doesn't matter if you believe me, it's just an observation I've witnessed when HTC made the same decision.
Sure they'll continue, they make other components as well as phones, in all fairness they could stop selling phones and still survive.
But for XDA, for development, for what we know today of Huawei devices? Lol If you think it's quiet here on the p20 pro forum, wait til you see the ghost town of a thread there will be for the p30 and pro, I doubt there will be a single ROM, no Dev would be dumb enough to buy it.

Huawei is targeting the Apple clientele. They couldn‘t care less about bootloader unlocking. Look at their advertising, their USP is design, camera, beautiful visuals. They don‘t sell to the tech nerd who wants to flash different software.

Damn.
You may still be able to do something , there was a guide on the above link posted by a user which can unlock the bootloader by all accounts.
This phone is quite a beast and there could and should be another way in the future.
Plus Huawei will probably reverse their decision, that's not confirmed by any means but I think they will.
Funky Huawei ( which is normally not what I'd recommend) will probably see a lot more action now that official unlocks are gone too.
Don't worry too much, if it's still possible someone will find out.

I'm shocked. I received my phone today and wanted to root it and now I read this.
Maybe you guys can help me understand a few things because I haven't tampered with any Android device since 2014.
- will I be fine with the standard pre-installed EMUI or am I missing some really cool and better custom OS when I can't unlock and root my device?
- I've used Xposed, AFWall+, TWRP and XPrivacy on my old phone - are there similar and equally safe tools for unrooted devices?
- How can I make backups without TWRP?
- are there any known workaround procedures known that would let me unlock the bootloader without that code from Huawei? Is it likely that there will be one?
Thanks

How? The link https://emui.huawei.com/en/unlock_detail is down
can't find https://www.emui.com/en/unlock_index either
EDIT: Tried everything. There are too many websites which seems unprofessional and half of them show certificate errors. Finally I wrote them a complaint about this via Mail and provided all the data like IMEI etc

Are there any other options for getting an unlock code at this point? I was thinking about purchasing a P20 Pro but may not if I can't unlock the bootloader.

Same question here. I have my Twilight P20 Pro lying here, unused since release in fact (so way past the return window) and meant to give it to my wife, but only with Root Tools (Adaway, YT Vanced etc.)
I missed the window since I was traveling and support won't help me.
I get it, my fault for not doing it in time but what now? I wouldn't mind paying for it, as the only other option appears to be selling the device at a huge loss (I paid full retail) and finding a different phone altogether.

Saying hello... WarBeard is inbound on the G7

Hey everyone,
Just picked up this device the other day, looking forward to playing with all of you.
Is anybody working on TWRP for the device? Flashable updates? If we can get TWRP locked down, it'll be easy to start kicking ROMs out.
Love the G7. These "budget" devices have been kicking ass lately (hardly budget based on their specs... I mean the Pixel 3 has the same amount of RAM LOL).
ANYWAYS... Check in and say hi.

Hello, very nice to meet you
The instructions for Magisk and TWRP are here. Please note that the TWRP is only in beta currently, and some users have reported issues

What issues specifically?
That's normal until things get ironed out. They'll need people to test for bugs.
