I recently came into a surface 2 rt tablet. It will not charge the battery at all. It must be plugged in to use. "Plugged in, not charging". I need to know if there is a patch to fix this flaw.. Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm thinking a bootable os, with current updates??? I don't know for sure.

Hi guys,
I stupidly plugged my Nexus One USB cable into a higher voltage charger in my car, about 8v-10v I think, and I could immediately smell burning. I unplugged it straight away and the phone died. The result was;
1. I could no longer charge it off the wall charger or computer USB charger, just got zero response, no led's etc.. seemed as though the phone was totally gone.
2. Then I took the battery out and charged it in my external battery charger. When I put the battery back in the phone it turned on and worked perfectly!!! although the battery didn't seem to last as long.
3. When it was powered on an working, it wouldn't pick up the USB connection to my PC. Did nothing.
So.... it seems as though the USB port is obviously not working. Would this be the extent of the damage or would it be something more serious in the phone?
Would the official Google dock allow me to charge the phone and connect it to my computer given that it uses the 3 pin method and not the USB?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Morgan
Ahhhh the smell of a resistor going. And within a circuit when one major component goes it will drag some others with it. Which could explain short battery life. Back up your stuff. And look into your options to replace device. Unless you have extencesive knowlege on micro surface mounted printed circuit board components and measureing values.
good day.
I don't have any knowledge of circuit boards so is there any other options to repairing this device? It is basically brand new!
Is there any chance that a dock would allow me to charge it?
If not, can I replace the main board? I disassembled it yesterday and know how to change it out.

Just guessing, but no. The cooked components for the charging circuit would also be in parallel to the dock port.

If you can find someone to sell it to you. yes

There goes any hope for a warranty claim.
good day
My charge is running stock Froyo with the latest version of Netflix and the rotation patch applied.
In my office here, I get LTE, so I enabled it, fire up Netflix, and connect with my USB cable (The cable is Samsung, leftover from my Epic) to my computer to keep it charged.
The battery still drains, and eventually it even overheated (said charging was paused because of battery temperature).
Anyone else experience anything similar? Any suggestions on how to fix?

First off, the Charge has a specific cable with a special connector pin that helps with flashing(among other things) and that might be your problem. Second, USB charging is much slower then direct wall socket charging, and third Netflix is a battery devouring MONSTER. I think one episode of Prison Break(42mins) drained about 10-20% battery. You can't out-charge Netflix with a USB charge, as for the overheating there's nothing you can do on stock, if you flash the PBJ OTB kernel you can underclock/volt to keep your battery cool, it still got slightly warm during netflix but everything else felt air conditioned. Sorry if I sound like an asshole, just read my post and I sounded like I was trying to prove a point lol. Just trying to help.

It's cool. I figured the Epic USB cable would work since it's an SGS phone, and I've used it to flash ROMs to that phone - and I definitely don't feel like shelling out to samsung for more special magical heavy duty usb cables. Maybe a powered USB hub would help. It seems it's heating up quite a bit just using Pandora, too. I'm wondering if it's a combination of volts/amps/whatever that it's trying to suck from the USB port, and maybe also my otterbox not allowing the heat to dissipate off of the back.

The otterbox will definitely hold in some heat. As for the powered usb hub, that won't do anything unfortunately. The max amount of power coming from a usb port is 500 mA and a wall charger (at least the one specified for the charge) shells out 1000 mA.
I did find a 12 adapter that puts out 1A. Not that has to do with anything on this topic.
OK, I am going back to work.
RESOLVED (Kinda)
Hello!
My VZW i535 just started giving me issues. I should preface this by saying that it is rooted and I do have a CM11 nightly flashed (will try to get specific version when I can, which may be awhile). I've had this installed for probably over a month now without problems. I also understand that charging issues are very common but nothing I could find is the same as my issue.
I noticed my phone was overheating (as it has frequently since purchased) with about 30% battery today, so I plugged it in after doing a reboot and all seemed well. About 15 minutes later I hear it beeping, giving the signal the battery is below 15%. It was actually at 5%, and the bottom of the device was extremely hot, as well as the end of the Samsung cable included with it, so I unplugged it and found that the metal part of the cable was mostly black and there was a strong electrical burning smell.
I tried two other USB cables, both in the Samsung AC adapter, and in the USB ports of several devices. With any cable in the adapter, it would say "charging" but would not actually charge, but with the computer USB ports it wouldn't say or do anything at all.
The battery is at 2% now and the device is powered off so that I can quickly do something if need be, but I can't do much. I ordered some replacement batteries with a charger, due for arrival by Friday 1/3, since I assume that the damage to the USB interface is permanent.
Is it likely that this was caused by the software? Or is the charger faulty? Any advice, in general? The warranty has expired, but I do have insurance on it if for some reason it would be better to just get a new device. I can't restore it to stock until I get replacement batteries; is that what you recommend?
Thanks so much!
Sounds like a hardware i ssue. Look inside ur usb port on the device to make sure it did not get burn. Wen ur battery comes in put it on and try to charge it with new cable. If it doesn't charge then it will ur USB port. I know some 4.4 roms give wonky bat stats but it shouldn't burn out ur cable or usb port at least i think it shouldn't. If u believe is a software issues flash a different version of the rom a previous build or a whole different rom. But with 2% battery i don't think u would be able to. Good luck
After playing around with it a bit, the USB interface on my phone definitely appears to have taken damage from the heat. It only charges when powered off, must be completely still, and charges relatively slowly.
What I would recommend for people with a similar problem is to do as I have done and purchase extra batteries with an external battery charger like the set I got for around $17 on Amazon.
My only guess for what caused this is that something faulted in the cable or AC adapter and caused a severe overheat issue. If anyone has anything else to say about that, please let me know so I have a better idea of what happened. I will mark as resolved soon.
Sorry if this is the wrong board but I'm new to XDA :/
So one day I left my Versus touchtab to charge and then when I came back it wouldn't turn on. The problem is that sometimes when I plug it in the tablet would act as though it's charging but it wont so I run out of charge. My theory is that it didn't charge properly and it's completely out of juice. Please could anyone tell me why they think it's not working and how to fix the issue. Thanks in advance!
P.S It doesn't charge via micro USB and I've already been told to charge it via USB and it's actual charger many times!
Hi there, I'm trying to charge my tablet this way
Can someone please tell me why this is not working?
Thank you
I'm new to this forum, so there may be a way to do that, but as far as I know, you can't directly charge a LiIon battery; they have a charge controller. If you by-pass the charge controller, I think you can blow up the battery.
