Download the ROM version you want, flash it in TWRP, flash TWRP, reboot recovery, flash magisk, kernel etc. You don't have to wipe data, but know that if there are any issues, data will be the cause of them since there was an Android version upgrade.
you can back up your data and nuke it with the MSMdownload tool

flashtool doesn't wipe any data if you don't check the wipe box

Hey everyone,
I have a Nexus 5 that I haven't updated in a long time that I'd like to get the latest possible OS for. The only modifications I've made which I think might be important are:
Unlocked bootloader
Rooted using SuperSU (v2.8.2 currently)
Installed XPosed (installer v2.6.1, not sure what version of the framework but it should be the latest supported by 4.4.4) with a few modules
Installed App Ops and removed permissions from some apps
Installed StickMount
I don't believe I have any custom recovery installed (I'd used a script to root and install XPosed originally and I don't know if it made any other changes). I'm comfortable using adb if needed but I'm cool with tools like FlashFire too.
My end goal is to have an updated OS with root and XPosed. I assume I'll need Magisk for XPosed, but not sure about root.
How should I go about doing this? I'm cool with losing all of my data (I'll be making backups with Titanium Backup) though knowing ahead of time if that'll be the case would be nice. If it's possible to update without losing data and without affecting anything that'd be nice, but maybe a clean start would be good? The OTA guide on this forum is only for 5, not 6, and most online guides start with 5. I don't want to mess up obviously. xD

The link you gave doesn't have the latest 6.0.1 build and it also says that it requires a minimum bootloader (HHZ12h) that I don't have (I have HHZ11k). Would it be possible to use the latest build from Google? What do I do about the bootloader? And would using TWRP as the recovery prevent me from passing SafetyNet?

If you're on stock, update using the built in updates. That'll get you all the latest firmware. I'm pretty sure the N5 goes up to 5.0 normally.

Would I have to do anything to XPosed or supersu first? I'd like to update to 6.0.1, too. I've seen online that there are OTA updates for it too.
Nope. But you may have to reinstall root, which is very easy once you're updated. Just let the updates do their thing, and you'll be on your merry way! Hope I helped
I think what I'll do is flash stock 4.4.4 keeping user data and then use the OTAs to update to 6. That way I have a clean system install to use Magisk with without losing any user data. (If that doesn't work I'll just flash 6.0.1 for a clean install.)
Hi guys, is there any way to "uninstall" a pre-installed system update?? Currently at OS 5.1.11 but idk what happened suddenly it says "system update (OS 9.0.2) is installed, please reboot". So the last thing I want is to reboot, since I WILL lose my root, and afraid that my TWRP version not compatible for Android P. THANKS!

If you are rooted then update will not get install; you need to flash full package through twrp
If you dont want to update to pie then flash oos5.1.11 full package through twrp use bluspark twrp

I think the update WILL be installed after a reboot. And I don't want that, which is why I am avoiding any sort of reboot atm.

Update WILL NOT installed if you have pached boot image
You can flash oos 5.1.11 or 9.0.2 directly through twrp but use only blu_spark twrp
If you have installed magisk then go to magisk manager select uninstall then restore image after select install magisk second slot after ota

I messed up rooting the phone originally and lost some data and now I have a mental block around which method is safest to do without losing my data or bootlooping. I want to make sure both slots update correctly and I'm unsure of the correct method.
Any help would be appreciated before I give it a go, thank you.
I'm also wondering if I've edited the build prop in any way with the build prop editor, will this cause a boot loop or will a full ota zip return it to normal anyway?

the typical and safe route to take an OTA and keep your root is:
download OTA using oxygen downloader app
Use the sytem update app to install the file above using the local upgrade option. DO NOT REBOOT.
Use magisk to install the twrp a/b keeper script. DO NOT REBOOT.
Use magisk to install magisk to the inactive slot. Then reboot.
I have the gm1913 phone which is a different variant, but I'm sure that the concept is the same.

Disable all magisk modules and reboot
Flash full update from local storage
Don't reboot
Go to magisk and flash twrp zip
Don't reboot
Flash magisk zip to separate slot (ota option)
Now phone reboots its self
Re enable modules in Magisk
Reboot

I am on an older version of Android 11 and I would like to install the latest Android 11 OTA without losing root and TWRP.
I know that I could just manually flash the lasted Android 11 firmware, then re-install TWRP and Magisk, but this would mean losing all data and having to reinstall apps, restore backups, etc...
So I was wondering if there were a quicker way to install OTA updates without losing data and root.
I know that there are many articles on the subject but they all refer to a previous version of TWRP and Magisk. Because TWRP 3.6.0 sports a completely revamped codebase I would like to know what is the latest recommended method if any.
This is my system info:
Android 11 sargo-rq1a.201105.002-factory-2433e0c0
Magisk v23
TWRP 3.6.0-11_0
Japan region
PS I do not intend to update to Android 12 yet
I ended up flashing the latest version of the stock firmware and reinstalling TWRP and root. However if you have a solution please post it for future reference.
I was looking for the same thing, didn't find any good solution, however, you can edit the flash-all script so that it doesn't wipe your data (remove the -w argument if I remember well).

It's annoying that we can't choose the OTA android installs, it has to be the latest one. On some phones you can choose a local file, but I didn't find a way to do so with a pixel 3a.
If you were able to do this, in theory you could just flash the magisk module for twrp retention and preflash magisk on the unactive partition after installing the ota but before rebooting. Then just reboot and you keep everything.
I'm not ready to update to android 12 either (gravitybox, twrp), but I'll try then...

I don't understand. Just flash the Full Factory OTA zip in TWRP. That won't remove any data. And you can just check the box to "Automatically flash TWRP after zip" so that you'll keep whatever TWRP you're using. Then you just have to reboot recovery (so that you're on the updated slot) and flash the Magisk APK in TWRP. Reboot and profit.

I wondered if you could do this, apparently TWRP doesn't recommend it.
Also I had no idea how this works on a device with A/B partitions. Does TWRP automatically flash on the inactive partition?

That 'recommendation' is specific to incremental OTAs. Also, it not generally being supported isn't the same as it not being recommended.
TWRP will install the zip to the inactive slot, and then when you reboot, the device will automatically boot into the updated slot.
