IF YOU HAVE ACCESS TO LTE ON AN AT&T PHONE, YOU DONT HAVE TO DO ANYTHING!!!!!!!!
IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A SIM CARD THAT WILL FIT IN THE N5, YOUR SIM IS LTE CAPABLE AND ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS GET THE RIGHT DATA PROVISION. YOU DO NOT NEED TO GET A NEW SIM!!!!!!!
This happened when the N4 came out and I came to the rescue far too many times to count...and I've already started to read threads about it so here we go!
You just bought an N5 and are either worried about getting LTE or can't get LTE connectivity on your N5. It's a really big issue with a really simple solution. You need to make sure of a few things.
1. You have a SIM that can receive LTE frequency
2. Your data plan is a LTE provisioned plan
3. Your APNs include an LTE ANP
1 & 2 can be solved at the same time and 3 should solve itself in most cases.
Here's the big issue: AT&T doesn't have a data provision for the N5 (or the N4). Your customer service rep will take the IMEI number from your phone when you ask for a new SIM and it will come back with their basic GSM plan by default. This caused awful data speeds on the N4 and will disallow LTE on the N5 so you need to inform them that this will happen before they go through the process. A nice rep will understand. An unknowledgeable rep will claim there is nothing they can do. Ask to speak to the manager. If none of them can help, take your new LTE capable SIM and walk away.
Now after you leave the store call up customer service and tell them you just got a new *insert LTE capable AT&T device here* and you can't find the IMEI number. Tell them you tried to go into the store and they were unhelpful so you're calling. The person will immediately become helpful and generate an IMEI number. They will provision your data using said serial number and you'll be good to go.
BEFORE inserting your SIM, start up your N5. Go through the setup process that you have to go through and then turn it back off. Plug in your SIM and reboot.
Go to Settings > Wireless & Networks > more > Mobile Networks > Access point Names. In there you should see an AT&T LTE APN and it should be already selected. If not, select it. This should be all you need to do. It really is that simple.
NOTES:
- All SIMs that fit in the N4 and N5 are LTE capable
- Here is what your AT&T APN should look like
- If you have any issues, post and I'll do my best to help
As always, Thanks are appreciated.
So even if the rep in store "can't help" I'll still walk out with the SIM card I need? Also, If I don't have my N5/IMEI in hand when I go in can I still setup a plan and get a SIM card? Thanks for the post!
EDIT: Going in with no phone I don't know rather to tell them I have a N5 coming or try to find a friends that will give me their IMEI that I can give them...
You'll get a SIM card no matter what because those are free...it just won't be provisioned properly unless you get a knowledgeable rep.
Having an IMEI in hand makes life easier; having your N5 will make it way easier. The SIM needs to be activated in the store and they will need an IMEI to activate. Just wait till you get your N5 to go through all this. It won't do anything to help you until you get it.
The IMEI will be on the SIM tray!

Ok, I will wait until Wednesday to go in then...one last thing, if it gets to the point I have to call ATT, when I say I can't find the IMEI won't they just tell me to flip the phone over or look in the settings, etc.. instead of generating one?
No.
They will ask you if there is a barcode / serial thing on the back of your device. You say no. Boom, done.
edit: don't forget to hit the thanks button!
So just going in and asking to exchange your sim for a micro sim isn't enough?
I have a note 3 right now with 4g. I was going to use the same Sim card in the note and put in the N5. Should it work out of the box or do I still have to take it in the store? How will I know that I have a an imei card?

No. The SIM must be activated and an IMEI is required to activate.

I'll make this even easier!
Do you have a SIM that will fit in the N5? If not, follow my steps. If so, skip ahead to calling AT&T customer support because ALL MICRO SIMS ARE LTE CAPABLE.
What do you mean by an IMEI card? All phones come with an IMEI.
great. AT&T why are you so terrible.
Im sim is in the note 3 rught now. Sending it back to att. Getting the n5 tomorrow. New to the Sim card thing. Coming from sprint. Just had to ask.

Hey guys I'm going to switching to straight talk att am I ordered the lte micro sim from them and plan to activate tomorrow should I expect to jump through hoops to get lte or expect the same issues as att users...not sure this is my first try at prepaid
same things will happen. You'll need to get an LTE data provision but will be unable to using your N5 IMEI

If you have 4g on your note 3 it means you already have a LTE data plan. All you need to do is take the sim out of your note 3 and pop it into your n5, no need to call anyone or make an unnecessary trip to the store.
4g =/= LTE in AT&Ts case. 4g can mean HSPA+ 4g!
If you have access to LTE currently YOU DO NOT NEED TO DO ANYTHING.

If you have a device and you can't find the IMEI, just go to the settings and about device to view it.. Wouldn't they ask you to do that?
Look, I know you want to dumb down stuff and give advise but some of it is just incorrect, not dumbed down.
Dial *#06# on any Android smartphone and it'll display the IMEI.

It's possible that the reps @ the AT&T Stores in different areas aren't properly keying the IMEI in properly. If at all possible have them SCAN the IMEI barcode on the back of the phone.
I went down to the AT&T store here locally (Bay Area, CA) and the only problem I had in the process was a 30 minute wait to see one of the reps.
I was previously on an unlimited data plan that I've had setup since I got my original iPhone 3G - 5 years ago. NOT an LTE plan by any stretch.
He went in the back and grabbed the sim and started the process of adding it to the account.
He scanned the sim and then scanned my phone -- It CORRECTLY recognized the device as a D820 **AND** automatically updated my data plan to the LTE Unlimited.
The only thing the rep had to do was press confirm a number of times. Not once did he have to manually adjust anything.
We waited about 5 minutes for the sim to activate, slipped it into my N5 and powered it up - Instant LTE service.
So AT&T *does* have the IMEI Registered for the N5 with a corresponding LTE Plan. If someone is trying to key it in and getting an error.. they're likely not typing something correctly.
I'm already using a note 3 on at&t with LTE already enabled on my plan. Also,my note 3 already uses a micro-SIM. I should be good to just swap my SIM into the n5 right? I have written down the default AT&T APN just in case it gets list on the n5.

This is good to know, I am going to do this today as my nexus 5 should be arriving sometime today. So have the rep scan and should be good to go, at least I have a game plan if I run into some problems.
Thanks

Hello all,
I have a Nexus 5 that I bought through FreedomPop. The phone comes unlocked, but FreedomPop says that I need to deactivate my phone and unassign it from the network by contacting them. However, I was under the impression that if you did a reboot you can swap SIMs at will. I'm going to Europe for a few weeks and I was planning on popping in a SIM from a local carrier, but I don't want to permanently cancel my service with FreedomPop. I've heard a lot on forums and stuff of people just swapping SIMs whenever. Is this thing by FreedomPop only meant for a permanent switch? Can I just pop out my SIM, use a European one for a couple weeks, and pop it back in when I come back to the US, and no one will be the wiser? Or did FreedomPop put some kind of restriction on it (even though the phone is supposedly unlocked)?

The GSM part should be OK to use with another sim card once you're in Europe. You just cannot re-activate on Sprint's 3G CDMA network without deactivating Freedompop account first though (just in case you want to use the Nexus 5 on Sprint's network with a different account)
I can't answer your question directly, but could you throw TWRP on, backup the ROM, then install the google ROM, swap SIMs, travel, and when back in the states restore the rom with TWRP?

So I won't need to reactivate my phone if I'm gonna use the same Freedompop account (and SIM) when I get back to the States? I'll only need to cancel if I'm gonna use a different number/carrier on Sprint? Thank you!

That might work, but I'd rather not void the warranty as the phone is still very new.
I've changed access point to the right settings and I still only get HSPA connection. I've searched other things online but nothing. Spoke to 3 reps. It says that LTE bands are supported so how do I get the best settings to get things running right? I've conveyed to international and the phone is totally unlocked. Sim and bootloader both. Am I missing something?
Thanks.

I did. I think maybe since it's not 5G version perhaps. At any rate I've gotten a fix the rep did.... Activated on another device like galaxy s10 then put back into my phone. I have LTE now since we've tricked the system
Also They are telling me they need to enter the imei range for all oneplus 7 pro phones which takes about 2 weeks. So hopefully the system won't figure out I'm using something other then S10 ?

Rubbish perhaps but that's what they've told me and until the rep did the trick to my sim, only got 3G. Maybe this temporary thing will be perm since he said for his Android the system thinks it's iPhone 7
I'm on AT&T with my OnePlus 7 pro and out of the box with my sim it works like a charm.
Currently "VOLTE" is displayed on top of the phone and I'm getting good data speeds (will post shortly)
I'd say something wrong on your sim or account end.

Same here. I got my 7 Pro (US unlocked version - not 5G) on June 10. Simply put my AT&T SIM in, and it works perfectly on LTE. Did not need to enter APN info, or anything.

That is pretty good of the rep to work out some solution. They could have just said "We don't support your device."
Over the years, I have used several international phones on AT&T. The issue is if you establish a new line on a new sim card, lte must be "provisioned" (their term not mine).
To provision the new sim card for lte, we need to put it into an AT&T branded phone first to activate the lte, or call customer service and give them an imei from an AT&T branded phone. Once the sim card is provisioned for lte it can be moved from phone to phone no problem.
For that reason, I still keep my AT&T Galaxy Note 2 around. Anytime I get a new AT&T sim card, I put it into the Note 2, wait until I see it has lte service then it's good to use in any international phone.

Huh, you have selected 4G in the sim settings?
So here's the situation, after calling and getting thru to the correct representatives I have it activated for now. I can no longer switch between phones as it will suspend service because the phone apperantly uses 4g for data but NOT VOICE so when you try and activate the phone ie switch SIM card to other mate 30 pro it deactivates the SIM so you have to call and find out about atts sunsetting of 3g. Essentially screwing me over as I have 2 of these devises that apperantly not on the APPROVED list. Now I've got to come up with a way to get yet another new phone been a bad few days for me and this is the icing on the

If you're using either Straight Talk, or Tracfone with their Verizon SIM, I would avoid the Unlocked Pixel 7 & 7 Pro for right now. I'm not sure if it's the phones themselves, or an issue with the carrier, or a combination of both, but it seems they're not compatible. I got my 7 Pro on Wednesday and tried using my ST Verizon SIM and it wouldn't work. I'm coming from a Oneplus 9 Pro and the SIM works just fine.
I say it could be an issue with either the phone, or with ST/TF because when I contacted Google Support to initiate an exchange, the only phone they would let me order with my RMA was the Google Fi version. I contacted support again about not being able to order the Unlocked version. I sent them a screenshot of my order email and a picture of the phones box with the SKU, all of which pointed to the phone being the Unlocked version. They agreed and I'm now waiting for them to resolve the issue of me not being able to buy the Unlocked version through my RMA request. So maybe there could be an issue on Googles end with the Unlocked version of the pixel 7/7 Pro.
I also say it could be an issue with ST/TF, becasue Verizon has recently bought Tracfone and all of their subsidiaries, Straight Talk being one of them. Because of this, I'm not sure if they've basically merged the services to the point where you would need the Verizon version of the phone in order for it to work. This is just speculation on my part though. I did contact Straight Talk support first, where they checked my IMEI/ICCID numbers, which matched what they were seeing on their end. They also ran me through the usual troubleshooting list, with nothing fixing the issue.
Here's a link to a couple threads with people having the same issue. The first one is one I posted the other day:

I am having the same issue with the phone reading the SIM Data just fine but will not connect to any cell towers, I did a bunch of research and there are several people with this same issue and some report doing a software update on the phone resolved their problem. I have not been as lucky as these people as I still have the issue with my phone.
As for the "Verizon" version of the phone there is no such thing for the P7P as the unlocked version and verizon version are the same model number for the phone which includes the 5G mmWave.
The update takes over an hour so be prepared for that

Oh yea, I already tried the update(didn't fix the issue) the other day, and yes, it took over an hour to install.
There are lots of compatibility issues. I tried signing up for eSIM on a bunch of MVNOs and prepaid plans last night and to my amazement the only one that worked was AT&T Prepaid -- and it's not supposed to work with Pixels on the activation portal.

I also tried the latest Pixel 7 software update, and it did not resolve the issue.
For what it's worth, I just contacted Google support. The representative told me they did not have any reports of this issue yet. I directed them to this post as well as another under the GooglePixel subreddit and one under the StraightTalk subreddit. I submitted all of my information to them and sent screenshots of the SIM not connecting. They are escalating the issue.

Just took my phone back to Best Buy. They had some more in stock so I tried another one straight out of the box without doing the update and that one is not reading my SIM and connecting to the towers either..
Google Fi sim has issues for me. Flashed latest Oct factory and BL unlock and root. Let sit overnight and installed sim. Looks like at moment of sim registration to cellular enabling it causes a reboot. Tried a few times and sometimes airplane mode would be on, and no sim (blank) or times just bootloop cycling. Removing sim, bootloop cycling stopped. Then airplane mode, but wifi can be on. So reflash latest again, no root. Same thing happening.
Support still clueless and escalation has begun.
Sim back in my 6a and all is fine.
I do know some data is pushed into system upon a Fi sim insertion been that way since my pixel 3. My local coverage is us cellular which requires a locked BL, but fortunately on Fi it works without a locked BL.
So thought to add, likely we need a immediate G side update...

Same issues with Total by Verizon (Total Wireless, another former tracfone) on my Pixel 7 as well as many others. Multiple sims and another carrier sim verified working in my phone.
Cross-posting this from reddit-
Brief update for everyone in the thread or lurking- Talked to Google support just now.
The tech I spoke explained that this is now a known widespread issue that has been escalated and is "top priority" (his words) for the engineers.
He documented my IMEI and added it to the ongoing ticket. I should be getting a follow-up email sometime in the future when a workaround is found.
I'd recommend calling to do the same ASAP to make sure that they are aware how widespread the issue is.

Excellent news ....for some.
I have many many devices on at any one moment and using the SIM vs eSIM allows me to keep the other non-phone devices on. Yes I could disable eSIM and still leave on. Unfortunately since I also reboot, flash different modules, roms, and in general leave only one as the sim activated device... Honestly if this is now a new thing, disclosure would be nice. No other pixel I've owned requires eSIM only. I will have to rethink my G. Fi future. Fortunately I'm now free of Fi device payments for purchase.
Edit update-- Seems on a Google Fi SIM that was used on my pixels 3, 4a, 4a5g, 6, 6a (2) working just fine...was the problem with 7 pro.
No good answer from Fi CS but they said to use a never used Fi sim. Which I had on hand.
Normal first SIM start and log in, works fine on 7 pro. Removed and now back on my 6a and working correctly. I guess... something is provisioned on carrier/sim/ install?
My answer is likely only helpful for Fi user base.
Total by Verizon (formerly total wireless). Having same issue. Pixel 7 won't connect to network, I've worked with their tech support for the past 18 hours with no luck. At this point I've reverted back to using my old phone and if this doesn't get resolved in the next week or so, I will be returning my pixel 7 as it's no use to me in its current form.
Semi-interesting thing.
I found an old straight talk AT&T SIM so I tried to activate that.
The Straight talk site accepted the SIM card number, but my IMEI was rejected. Either they are flat out saying it is incompatible now or ST has temporarily stopped Pixel 7 devices from attempting to activate until it's fixed. At least they seem to be aware?
Here's the message-
Our system shows that your phone will not work with Straight Talk’s service. Do you have another handset you would like to try? Or you can always check out our phone store to see what's available for purchase.

Go to prepaidcompare.net and find a new MVNO. All the TracFone brands have gone to hell since Verizon took them over.
I know some will not care to hear this, but it's probably worth posting (for the sake of those readers who might be wondering) that prepaid Verizon is indeed working without issue.
This isn't a vote or an ad for VZW.
I usually go with whatever is least expensive that meets my needs (Red Pocket, Straight Talk, Mint, Google Fi, Visible have all gotten my business at some point) but VZW is the only carrier with decent coverage at my current workplace.
I'm in the same boat of needing Verizon. I plan to check out US Mobile. Good pricing and esim capable (working with P7P, not with P7 right now) alont with a 10 day trial.

Are you locked or unlocked? Would be nice to know, unlockable device is my requirements. Having another good signal provider for my home would be nice, currently Verizon is one.
I couldn't in the past get Verizon because of the locked part...

FWIW, US Mobile Warp 5G SIM uses Verizon (and even gets the same priority Verizon postpaid customers get if you use a 5G device unlike Verizon prepaid which is deprioritized to last network priority) and I was even able to activate my eSIM on their service with no problem.
Unfortunately, Verizon sucks here, so the trial is going to go to waste, but I tried a bunch of MVNO and carrier prepaid options and only AT&T Prepaid and US Mobile worked.

The Pixel 7 Pro supports all of Verizon's bands including mmWave no matter if you get it locked from them or unlocked elsewhere. Verizon added the Pixel 7 Pro to their database from day one because of that mmWave support.
I might have used the wrong word, I meant can the bootloader be unlocked and multiple devices. My problem with Verizon was imei dependent. Could not use a Verizon sim on multiple devices.
