Why can't we flash the D6603 pre-rooted XZDR 5.1.1 Rom on a rooted/recovery D6616? I thought the only thing stopping us before was that we did not have root or a custom recovery on the 6616, so we could not do it without losing DRM keys. Has that changed or not?
Because bricking your phone isn't fun
Right, I understand that there are risks involved. What I am trying to understand is what in particular creates those risks. Could you explain a little further why flashing a D6603 zip would brick the D6616?
I am curious about this as well.
I just recently got my Z3, which I had to unlock since I use AT&T. I now want to root and put 5.1 on it, but it seems like the T-Mobile one is so locked down. As far as I know about DRM keys I don't really care about them since I am not planning on using any Sony software (except maybe the camera software) If I could just put 5.1 on it, with a camera app that shoots RAW I would be happy.
What version do you have? We have root for the D6616 but that won't help us get 5.1 from what I can see. Best bet is to get the D6603 if that is what is most important to you.

I have the D6616.... I guess I don't care so much about 5.1 as I do getting the best battery life possible. But it looks like custom roms are not available since the boatloader is locked?

That's correct - we're limited to modifications of stock. But that makes me wonder why 5.1.1 wouldn't work.

I've been looking for a 5.1.1 for the D6616..... Prerooted.... No one has this yet? I am on 4.4.4 stock rooted ROM, and I have a flashable 5.0.1, but I see no reason to not want 5.1.1, so why do you say root on 5.1.1 isn't doable?

It's not root that's not doable. There exist 5.1.1 prerooted zips for D6603. The issue is that 5.1.1 for the D6616 has not been released yet, hence it has not not been rooted.

Ah, understood now. Thanks for clarifying.
Hi there, how you doing friends? I hope fine.
Well I'm new in this so I'll try not sounds like I'm dumb. Well, last week I rooted my device an Sony Xperia Z2, I was using android 5.1.1 the last version I could update via OTA, well to make the "root" I had to downgrade to kit kat 4.4.2 or something like that, but the sameway my device was rooted I keep receiving updates via OTA, and now I'm currently using Lollipop 5.0.2 and it's still rooted and I loved, my doubt is: The update via OTA appeared again to version 5.1.1 the version I had before I did all that process, if I update from 5.0.2 rooted (my actually version) to 5.1.1 my phone will be "unrooted"?
Thanks and sorry my bad English.

According to me , it shouldnt loss root access but im not 100% sure to be frank....
And in case u take the risk and it does loss root access i think so u can use kingroot to root ur phone back again.

I'm using an Stock Rom, but If I update it and lose my root access, I'll have to downgrade to Kit-Kat again, remake the root and then upgrade to 5.0.2 again, cause i can't find a rom 5.0.2 for my Device, not even here on XDA, i only found kit-kat :/
So, I rather wait till is possible to make root on 5.1.1. but thanks anyway.
Hi!
Here's a thread that should help in your device section,

Hi Guys,
I am back on the Android bandwagon after a good 5-6 years of break and starting the journey with an unlocked Xperia Z3. I have not looked into flashing custom ROMs as I have just bought the device and don't really have time these days to go mental with modding and changing things around.
A quick Google search revealed that the latest official Android version for my specific model - D6603 is Android 6.0.1. However, my phone is on 5.1.1 currently and if I try to look for update, it says I have already got the latest version. I am in the UK and I thought that the global roll out was at the end of April. Any idea why the update is not available for me?!
As of now the only uk z3's to have 6.0.1 are 3 Uk, Virgin mobile uk, Vodafone Uk. U can how ever manually flash an official stock rom of 6.0.1.
Either download Flashtool or Xperifirm. Also a useful way to check for the latest firmware releases for the UK.
I flashed a U.S custom rom, Prerooted. Works fine
It takes time to get OTA update, but you can upgrade manually. Try using xperia companion on PC and check for an update. If it doesn't work then you can use Flashtool. Just google for it. Latest MM build for D6603 is 23.5.A.0.570.
Btw, this should be in Q&A section.
Thanks a lot guys... It feels alien to come back to all flashing and modding. I will try to pick up asap. Cheers

I would think the unlocked version get updates earlier than the carrier versions. Oh well... I guess manual update it is then. Do you see any difference with Marshmallow over Lollipop?

Well, each region gets the update different time, It can be that some regions aren't willing to push the update. No one knows when. But with manual update with flashtool you can install another region's firmware. There is no big differences between them.

My personal experience with MM is a good one, The new Ui seems to be smooth and fluid, battery optimization ( in my case ) seems far better than LP. And the new additions all be it only a few have made the z3 feel fresh and new. MM has been long awaited but in my humble opinion very much worth it. Although a feature i was looking forward to seeing was passed over by Sony, Adoptable storage. A shame but not a deal breaker.
But if you are interested in such things it is available in the Android N Preview, which is available to all 6603 users via Xperia companion.

Hey guys .... Good Morning
I have a question for you or i want to have ur Advise on " DOWNGRADING FROM MM (JAN SECURITY UPDATES)>LOLLIPOP
Is it Possible to DO ? I have Moto G3 XT 1550 2gb/16gb... I'm Asking This question CZ i think battery backup and overall performance of Moto G3 with Lollipop was brilliant . But i have read so many thread of many user saying that they had bricked their device while downgrading from MM to Lollipop . So I'm Stopping myself to do so at this moment friends is it possible to do and what I need to do to make it happen waiting for Reply frnzz
Thnx in advance :fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:
I have done it.
Offcourse you can downgrade from Marshmallow to Lollipop. I did that 2 to 3 times, haven' faced any issues. What I want to let you know is be careful with each and every step when proceeding further.
I think you aren't rooted, so no TWRP. I have the same device, what I usually do is get the TWRP backup to an external sd card before messing up, so in case anything goes wrong you can directly roll back to the point where you started.
2 things I want you to know before starting :
1. If you are too much concerned that your device may get bricked, I think you must unlock the bootloader, root the device, flash TWRP and get a full backup and then proceed further with downgrading.
2. Usually if you are careful, you can directly downgrade without doing step 1.
Starting off
1. Download the stock firmware from this Link
2. After downloading follow this Link for flashing the Lollipop Rom.
I hope this helps.

U have done it before the security patches or after the security patches cz security patches upgraded the Bootloader and In order to downgrade i think i need to skip motoboot and gpt files am i right bro or correct me if im wrong
I never updated anything on lollipop, though it was rooted and had TWRP installed. I don't remember everything but I received the security patch updates, i tried installing but each time when the device rebooted the installation failed. (I think because of unlocked bootloader)
When Jio came up, I was having VOLTE issues on Lollipop so I wanted to update to Marshmallow but I couldn't do it over OTA update. I backed up the lollipop rom via TWRP and then manually flashed the marshmallow rom myself. Everything was good but I didn't like the vertical app drawer, so again I backed up marshmallow rom and then rolled back to lollipop rom with minutes. After some days I had to restore to marshmallow again. And after months, today I am on AOSP Extended rom based on Nougat. Excellent Rom.
So regarding you questions, I suggest you to go through the comments section of How to flash factory images page.
I already told you, if you are concerned then unlock the bootloader, root, TWRP. :good:

Do want to restore it to back stock 6.0.1
downgrade to 5.1.1
I downgraded to 5.1.1 using 6.1 stock reckovery for reset before flashing.
Flashed factory image without flashing gpt.bin and bootloader.img
After reboot i got a notification to completely deinstall motorola sensor-firmware in order to went back to a previous version.
Not knowing if this will brick my device, i only disabled the notification by longpressing it/ question mark/.. a screen opened where i could block this notification.
Till now i could not see battery life improvement compared to MM or N Roms

Yes you can downgrade by using stock recovery with having Motorola update notification but you can not do it with twrp recovery as it may be dangerous for your phone.I had done it successfully with stock recovery of 5.1

So to relock the bootloader again u need the firmware latest with oct/jan/april security patches .

I cant seem to downgrade from 7.1.1 to Marshmallow
You gotta help me
I spent 2 days fixing this
Flashtool worked for me with the "journalist" rom to downgrade to MM F8331. I followed guide, backed up TA first, used adb/fastboot to flash Androplus v4 kernel and recovery. Androplus kernel (v4) worked for MM, then used v26 for 7.1.1 stock rom (Ger cust). Have TA_poc modified kernel now.
