[F8331] Problem after restoring ta partition - Sony Xperia XZ Questions & Answers

Hello!
Yesterday I decided to restore my ta-backup and I was sure I could do that with no problem because Ive done that before with luck.
I restored the ta-backup in recovery, powered off, started it in flash mode, tried to flash the newest ftf and I got a question to run a script, I click no but it wont let me to flash because It wants me to enable debug setting and bang I cant go back to the system to enable it because of the restoring.
I click yes to run the script next time and its flashing. I start my phone and its restarting endlessly now. I tried with lots of diffrent ftf but same problem with all of them, it keeps rebooting.
Im sitting here frustrated with a useless phone in my hand and I have no ide how to fix it so I come here to beg you guys to help me solve this problem.
Besides I would be gratefull if someone could upload 39.0.A.1.250 and 39.0.A.3.30 ftf, I cant find working one in google.
Im using the latest flashtool
Edit:
Never mind fixed that problem. I flashed 39.0.a.1.213 ftf, asked me for password to get into system and I wrote wrong password 16 times so the phone factory reseted. Now Im in system trying to update to Oreo, but it tells me that Im up to date. I tried even with xperia compnion and same there. Anyone knows any solution to this?

- restore a TA-partition only AFTER flashing an ftf (fastboot boot TWRP.img to be able to do it)
- when switching Android versions (Nougat, Oreo, Marshmallow, ...) you have to do a factory reset
I use Titanium Backup (you have no root after locking your bootloader with the TA-restore though) to restore my apps
I use my server (calender, addresses) and syncthing and adb push to restore much of my data
The rest is manual work.

Thanks! I knew I forgot something, it was the flashing ftf before restoring. I have your reply for next time to remember :fingers-crossed:

IT WAS THE FINAL STEP... and it did not work. (Stuck on boot loader warning screen)

FINAL EDIT: FIXED!!! Sparsechunk files 1,2and 3 have to match the exact name with the firmware folder sparsechunk files.
I did not notice that my firmware sparsechunk files ended in .0 .1 .2 and not 1 2 3 like the tutorial had listed, so I was fastbooting the wrong sparsechunk command. That was the final fix that finally worked for me.
Original post:
SHORT VERSION:
My god this has been one crazy root journey.
I have done absolutely EVERYTHING I could pull up on google to fix my phone, and what seemed to be the final piece to the puzzle, still has not fixed anything.
My phone is bricked, and i would really appreciate help at this point.
The current problem:
When I turn on my phone, it vibrates, and displays the WARNING BOOT LOADER UNLOCKED screen, and stays there forever.
I can access my boot loader, and recovery, but I dont know what to do at this point.
I tried a quick flash stock recovery kit kat with moto tool AIO, and it didnt help.
Any ideas?
LONG VERSION (backround info may help to understand the current issue)
Now, if you want to know what began all of this, continue reading, otherwise the above is my current issue.
After successfully unlocking and rooting my phone
I downloaded SWITCHME, an app that lets you create multible users on the phone. the instructions say that you can use a sub account to test and mess around with anything because you can simply go back to the admin account that has everything untouched.
That was a lie.
1.I deleted .setup, along with a few other things THAT WHERE NOT FLAGGED AS IMPORTANT, assuming the phone would still work. and my phone went bonkers, displaying this infinite message: UNFORTUNATELY, SETUP HAS STOPPED. It was impossible to use the phone, and I could only access bootloader.
2.After endless googling, driver downloading, xda mod installing, I managed to set up my boot loader to do the guide restore stock firmware:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2542219
Sadly, I flashed the wrong model number package, I was flashing x35, when I later discovered that my phone is x45.
Flashing the x35 firmware bricked my phone further, to where it would "fail to boot up" and would only display bootloader over and over after attempting to turn the phone on.
3. Simple, I realized I flashed the wrong thing, so I downloaded the x45 firmware from the firmware teem on this website, flashed all of the commands, and bam, the phone starts up with the boot loader warning, and DOES NOT get stuck in the previous boot loader issue I had.
But now the phone wont get past that warning screen so... now im pissed.
Please, if anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it, Im so close to getting my phone back...
EDIT 2: Looks like the phone wont stay shut down, I realized that if I dont open up boot loader, it will turn itself on and display the warning message.
EDIT:
The stuffs I have, ready to try anything:
CWM touch mod
Moto Tool AIO
Minimal ADB and Fast boot
RETUS x1045 factory firmware
All directories, folders, cmd commands are set up and working properly between all of the programs.
The phone appears to be responding to all cmd commands properly.
I also have the windows one touch super boot root method. (he superboot-windows.bat )
Im afraid to try anything major after freshly flashing the x45 firmware that seemed to bring me one step closer without the help of someone else.
I restored stock to my phone using this link yesturday http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/how-restore-motorola-moto-g-stock-firmware-1447290
it may work for you
I have almost the same problem as if the fastboot not install anything despite not display errors
great that you got it done.
maybe my few cents about my "bricking" story. (xt1032 moto g)
yesterday i wanted to change the rom from cm11 nightly to another custom rom like ehndroix/carbonrom...
first i thought that will be done in a few mins, after having already flashed a custom rom.
then the story began, getting adb work, but, 2weeks ago everything was setup and went fine. dunno why my laptop lost the "drivers".
thats the link which solved that problem: tinyurl . com / kgffjh4 [sorry cant post links outside of xda yet, spam protection]
so after a few hours of getting that fixed i, i began flashing.
suddently i got stuck in bootscreen (ehndroix logo for example)...
then i wanted to go back with my previous backup made internaly of clockworkmod. though i couldnt restore my backup because there was an error message while restoring /data of my backup
also when restoring to factory/wipe in cwm there was that error message about clouldnt "touch" /data, i dont remember the message exactly.
after thinking i bricked everything, i though lets wipe my internal sdcard, maybe that causes the /data error.
then i restarted the device and went for a shower... after 15min i came back and my device was "started".
now i dont know that exactly helped, maybe wiping all data on my phone, or just letting my device boot for a "long" time...
so, thats my yesterdays brick story.
do a factory reset if the bootloader has that option.. otherwise install or run/boot a custom revovery, then either
try the factory reset option there and reboot or..
wipe everything and install a rom
Ok try this, I'm was a victim too:
Relock and unlock bootloader
Download and flash latest Philz
From there format everything...EVERY PARTITION...switch F2FS
After switching wipe every partition again
Select and execute the other 3 wiping option ie., Clean to install new ROM and the other 2 (I can't remember now)
Do this all over again via TWRP too
Now, this is important, don't use the mfastboot for restoring stock...use the one provided by Google for its Android SDK
Flash the stock images
Flash the Moto Razr boot animation and not the one for Moto G to remove the warning sign
I'm 99.99% sure your phone will boot properly
After the phone boots, reflash the Moto G bootanimation
Good Luck!

You're still in stock recovery.
Use fastboot flash recovery xyz.zip to flash philz recovery
Use this when you're in bootloader mode.

Root = bootloop on 5.0.1

Hi all,
So I'm far from a noob at at all of this (doing the custom android thing for years). But I'm not exactly constantly fiddling with my phone all the time anymore either. Basically I get a set-up that works for me, and I stick with it.
I've patiently been waiting to update to Lollipop. And today I did it. I did it by flashing the required factory images with fastboot.
AND IT WORKS. No problem. It boots. I go through the initial set-up. I can let it restore all my apps and passwords from the google servers, etc. So far so good.
My problem is that I cannot root. After I try, it bootloops (stuck at the Google splash, with my unlocked icon).
I tried to root before my first boot. I tried after the initial boot (before set-up and signing in). I tried rooting after setting it all up, and singing in, and letting google restore all of my apps. No matter which sequence I try, it will reboot a couple times at the first Google splash, and then fall back to Recovery.
(So, I'm on back on my rooted 4.4.4 nandroid, I think it's Mahdi Rom-- I forget)
Vital Stats:
Trying to install factory images of 5.0.1, all stock (system, boot (kernel), radio, bootloader)
Factory reset
(the above works fine)
TWRP 2.8.1.0
SuperSU-v2.40 (flashed via recovery)
Any ideas? Thanks for any help.
No, but could you try the previous version of SuperSU? Just to rule out the new version that I haven't tested please?
I updated to 5.0.1 earlier
Flashed all the img files exact userdata and then booted in to Android.
I then flashed TWRP 2.8.1.0 and used that to flash SuperSU 2.37
All that worked fine.. I then did a play update and SuperSU updated to 2.40
All working fine as far as I can tell. Apps needing root are working!

Try not doing that? When you go through the initial configuration, choose "Set up as a new device". Maybe the restore is somehow corrupting SuperSU?

It happens even if I try to root before setting anything up at all.
albert_htc,
Are you saying: I should also flash the stock recovery first. Then boot for the first time. Then re-flash TWRP. Then flash SuperSU.
I never flashed the stock recovery. TWRP was on already on it.
Thanks guys. I'll give it another rip (doing stock recovery, then flashing back to TWRP) sometime soon.

Yes, flash the factory image using the batch file so every partition gets re-flashed. Now I'm thinking maybe your recovery is corrupt.
Run flash-all.bat and when your device reboots, go through all of the initial configuration and download all of the Gapps updates. Once that's all completed, go ahead and route using TWRP. If you find yourself still having the same problem, try live booting TWRP to flash SuperSU.

I'm not going to flash over my user data, nandroids, app back-ups, etc. I'll stay with kit kat forever on my nexus 5 before I do that. Version numbers aren't that important. Hours wasted getting things set-up again are.
My recovery works fine. Both on kit kat and lollipop. My only problem is a boot loop when I flash SuperSU (via TWRP), on lollipop. I will try flashing stock recovery, though and then reflashing TWRP.

It's a tedious process, but it really isn't all that hard to back everything up to a computer, and you can do it easily with fastboot and a single command line.
Or what I'd recommend doing is just booting up, backing up all folders to a PC and then resetting and restoring later, backup apps with Titanium Backup (what I always do). A lot of us flashed factory images when Lollipop came out, so it isn't that bad once you start on the road.
Have you tried rooting from the bootloader via Chainfire's cf-auto root? I know I've read that sometimes rooting from recovery doesn't work properly, and that only certain zips will work. I've used the auto root each time (from stock fastboot flashing 5.0 & 5.0.1) with lollipop and it works fine. Link
Unzip and run batch file in bootloader. It will wipe everything if you haven't already unlocked bootloader (fastboot oem unlock). If you are already unlocked it won't wipe anything.

I just backed the /sdcard, to my PC. I just re-ran titanium.
I can deal with "/sdcard issues" from updating to lollipop easy enough. That's a 30 second fix. I can deal with setting up my email accounts to my email client app. I can deal with launcher settings, and all the other apps, widgets, etc. Those are things that I can slowly get back to where I want. They aren't critical. But yeah, very tedious.
I think "starting over" may be much more tedious for me than most people though. I run ssh servers and clients on all PCs, servers, and phones (disabling passwords and using rsa encryption keys for security). It's very nice, once I get it all set up in that I can access everything (from anything) very easily. I do need root for that though also.
But if I can't just hit a "restore" to get it all my ssh addresses, keys, fingerprits, etc back to where it was and then I have to: reverify new fingerprints, generate new keys, re-enable passwords to transmit new keys for everything, then disable passwords (for all machines) ... well... I just get very very grumpy.

[Bricked] One of the harder ones =|

I'm gonna keep it simple, here is the scenario:
ROM is corrupted.
Bootloader is unlocked.
FRP lock is on. (fastboot can't do much)
TWRP was flashed back to stock.
Stock hard-reset fails. (even wipe option)
Force upgrade stops at 5% (swear I am using the same one)
eRecovery does not work.
Can't flash. Can't push files.
Wat do.
Model: BLN-L24C567B369 (pretty sure this was it)
Whole story:
This whole episode began when I wanted to install Magisk to use MagiskManager's HideMe feature. This required me to install TWRP recovery which inturn lead me to unlock my bootloader in the process, straightforward and went off nicely. Now it was time to gain superuser which I already had done before on another device, installing SuperSU through TWRP recovery was painless but after booting found out MagiskManager needs Magisk Root to work. I then followed Android Exlpained's article to do so. Running unSU through recovery went smoothly but running Magisk didn't, on the initial run I was prompted to use Adrian DC's BootBridge which after removing a few Assert lines ran nicely. However there was no root install, SuperSU was removed though.
At the time I wasn't sure what exactly I was doing and ended up soft-bricking by flash boot through TWRP, at this time FRP was unlocked. After many many hours I restored to stock firmware by using YMNDLZ's guide. I used BLN-L24C567B370(OTA-MF-FULL) for the img files then proceed to flash the vendor.img using TWRP and the rest (boot.img, recovery.img, system.img) using fastboot in that order as instructed. The only part which didn't work was the forced update, it always failed at 5% however after more hours going recovery mode (now stock) wiping the cache and data/factory reset did the trick (Note: my model showed BLN-L24C567B369). I proceeded to reinstall TWRP, installed MagiskManager, tried to install Magisk 16.0 which ran but didn't root me but was fine because MagiskManager's download worked. I then thought since I went through all this trouble might as well install a custom rom, EliteRom was my ROM of choice. At this point I had logged in with my gmail credentials FRP was now locked.
*Before further action was taken I took the precaution to backup my current stable stock ROM after installing EliteROM but before booting*
The steps to install EliteROM went by flawlessly, installed EliteTWRP reboot into it, ran EliteROM
went through the setup without any hiccups. However up system restart I the ROM wouldn't boot leading me to boot into my recovery only to be prompted for an encryption password (???). Since I didn't recall setting one, couldn't boot into the OS, and FRP was locked I couldn't read my own internal storage. So I reformatted the internal storage and tried what had worked before, flashing the img files using TWRP then booting into stock recovery wiping cache and data/hard reset. . . this did not work. And here I am FRP locked so fastboot isn't useful (I think?), stock recovery doesn't work, eRecovery fails connection, and force update still fails at 5% with "Software install failed!".

you have to follow only xda methods to root or change to custom rom. i have never heard about flashing stock images from twrp. i think u didn't followed elite rom instructions clearly. you need to formate data then reboot to recovery then wipe everything then flash the os in this way you won't get encription error. anyway now your frp is locked so there is no way to flash twrp so download all the available firmwares for your phone oeminfo then do flashing via dload you will get it worked.
even i was also once stuck with elite rom. i didn't liked it because missing apps icon and forgetting permission. i tried to go back to stock but stuck at 5% error. then went to google searched stock rom for honor 6x india and downloaded nearly 3 roms last one worked helped me to get back to stock.
never flash system images boot, vendor etc from fastboot and twrp unless you are on emui8 and going to try gsi roms.
hey i cant revert back to stock rom. it fails to get package from server. does jio voice calling works on this device?? if no then plz guide me how to go back to stock rom..

There is apparently no way to restore a Nandroid backup under OOS 9.0.4...???

So I did what I thought was a routine thing, trying to restore system, boot, and data like I have on many phones before only to ended up in a bootloop or bootloader only not even able to boot a TWRP from fastboot.
After several hours of trying just about everything I finally faced the fact that I was not going to be able to restore any NANDROID backup I had do to A/B, encryption or the latest Android security patch?
However, you can get you phone running again quite easily with this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6/how-to/rom-stock-fastboot-roms-oneplus-6-t3796665 and using the flash-all option from a WIndows 10 VM (I am a Mac/Linux guy, but this does work from a Windows VM and is quick).
Before I re-installed anything I wanted to just verify that I could do a simple NANDROID backup of an empty phone with twrp / blu_spark and I can't under any case. Here's what I tried (with latest stock TWRP and latest Blu_Spark TWRP):
1) simple restore of data, system, boot -- > boots only to fastboot, need to recover with thread above
2) Recover with thread above, re-root (Magisk 18.1) and reinstall TWRP, boot ROM, then try restoring just data -- > same as #1
3) Recover using thread above, re-install TWRP, restore NANDROID, and re-run Magisk (suggest by a few) --> same as #1
My device is encrypted, and I could turn off encryption, but that is somewhat scary on a daily driver.
So has anyone successfully restored a NANDROID on a 9.0.4 rooted phone with the latest Android security patch and if so, what's the trick?
Thanks,
MW

apparently is not matter of factly, i do nandroids and have restored from them various times with only 2-3 settings that i had to reset my way thereafter, hence it's apparently worth to retry, it works.
sometimes it helps to know that things are possible to put some more effort into something, knowing it can be worth it in case of success.
perhaps some remarks:
if your' phone is "empty" as you stated i recommend to first install factory image / stock rom latest OOS, i.e. 9.0.4
make nandroids of each partiton speparately and also restore them separately while don't nandroid the images, and cerrtainly don't restore those, only common partitions like system, boot, vendor, data.
system and vendor are present as normal partition as well as image partition, don't touch the later in any way.
all this only works if you restore on a phone that was bootable before you restore, for restoring to empty phones there are other procedures via fastboot commands and or stock rom via stock recovery if it's on device, else ADB comes in handy.
last but not least if you restore you have to restore everything, not only one partition especially not only system partition, won't work well or not at all depending.
1. Modem if corrupted, else not needed
2. EFS if corrupted, else not needed
3. Vendor start here if the previous rom was running well and make sure it's not been altered or you have to correct vendor backup in case you have more than one
4. System
5. Boot
6. Data
good luck

OK -- do tell, what settings did you use? And you have done this on OOS 9.0.4 with encryption, or did you disable decryption?
I'll happily delete or edit the post...it seems many are having problems with few solutions starting with 9.0.4...

the last restore i did on 9.0.3, since then i gave up on custom roms since OOS rooted + a few useful apps make OOS close to perfect for me
i'd not delete the thread, many reported issues with nandroids because the normal procedure to take one single backup and restore from twrp to an empty device does not work, one always need to first flash stock OOS to a clean slate before installing anything else or restoring anything.
and backups should be in increments not one single backup like it was possible on single slot devices.
restoring one single partition usuelly ends up in a mess except boot partition, boot, efs and modem can be restored as standalone restores without issues in most cases while flashing a kernel + magisk is still easier and safer than restoring a boot partition.
as to setttings i dunno what you mean, exactly and as to encryption, my device is and has bee encrypted at all times.
it's most important to use twrp- recovery by blue_spark, official standard recovery has issues ( at least always had as long as i tried using it) especially with verification in TWRP on encrypted devices. there is a risk to end up encrypted without any way to boot back into system or into twrp menu, hence use blue_spark's and all is well, user error exempt of course
Since reinstalling everything is going to take forever (at least another 4 hours)...I am going to disable encryption and do some more testing. I am now more certain than ever, no-one has successfully restored a NANDROID on an encrypted OOS 9.0.4 phone ever.
I am going to disable Force Encryption and AVB 2.0/dm-verity and try my restore again -- maybe then I can use one of my NANDROIDS. But doing this on an encrypted phone seems impossible. I guess if you use a screen PIN you files are still vulnerable to someone that knows bootloader and / or recovery, but I'll have to live with that.... Not being able to NANDRIOD restore is a killer...
I know is an old discussion but I believe we still have this issue. I have a 6T, oos10.3.6 and neve succeeded to restore a nandroid backup. Does anyone found a working solution?
Thanks

Is it possible to actually restore a TWRP backup on this phone?

Any time I've tried to restore a backup it has completely bricked my phone. I tried just backing up the default options and restoring bricked, so when I had my phone rooted and setup perfectly with XXX no limits on Android 10 and all my apps installed, I made a FULL backup in case I bricked it with smurf kernel or something. Long story short, I ended up bricking it via other methods and tried to restore my full backup only to be completely bricked again. Not even recovery works after installing a backup. I've found that no matter what I backup, if I restore it it completely bricks my phone to the point where it only automatically boots into fastboot and I have to install a system image and start over every time. Am I doing something wrong or does TWRP 3.3.1-70 not support restoring yet?

Stop trying to restore the complete backup.
Flash the ROM and restore data only.
I don't see a point in backing up the ROM, when you can just as easily flash it then restore data.

It's just a hassle because installing Android 10 factory image via fastboot fails every time. If I fiddle around and brick, I have to fastboot install Android pie, root it and install twrp, download Android 10, install it via local updater then flash magic to the other slot then reboot and install my xxx no limits module before I can restore my data. Compared to just getting TWRP up and running and restoring my backup I'm looking at a time consuming process to get to that point. I wish I knew why flashing Android 10 via fastboot bricks every time because that's a major cause of this headache while figuring out what does and doesn't work on Android 10. I already have titanium backup backing up nightly to Google drive so by the time I get to the point I can flash my data I might as well just restore my apps + data in TB. If I could get TWRP to successfully restore my backups I'd be given a lot of freedom to tinker around freely without worry of this time consuming restoration. I think next time I'm gonna try backing up into a flashable zip and seeing if I can successfully restore my image via fastboot when I inevitably brick again while messing around

I haven't actually tried this. Are you talking about flashing the rom, and (within the same instance of TWRP), then restoring? Or are you talking about flashing the ROM, booting it, then going back into TWRP and restoring data?
just a quick question?? why are you always downgrading to a9?? when you can simply
1. flash a10 ( i save one on my PC in case a problem arises)
2. set up the phone
3. in pc, open a10 rom, locate for its boot.img amd store in phone
4. install magisk.apk and patch boot img , then copy to pc
5. install patched boot.img via fastboot
congrats,, back on track.. it only took me about 10-15 min to restore a bricked device up to being rooted and twrp installation
