Hello all,
As you all probably know there exists a popular brand in India which manufactures Android devices. It is Micromax Informatics Ltd.
This brand has been consistently rejecting to release kernel sources for any of their android devices which is direct violation of GNU GPL v2. And as a consequence of which we Recognized Contributors have initiated a petition in order to get the sources released so we developers can utilize the full potential of these devices.
I request you all both Indian and Non-Indian members, both Micromax and non-Micromax users to please support us by signing the petition at Change.org
Link to petition:
https://www.change.org/en-IN/petiti...pment-proceed-by-releasing-kernel-source-code
I also request you all please send this letter to Micromax over here
Requester: Enter your name.
ID (E-mail): Enter your email address.
Country: Select your country.
Inquiry Type: Select "Request for Kernel Source Codes".
Model: Enter "Your Phone Model No and name".
Message:
Dear Micromax,
A great device becomes GREAT only when software truly compliments the hardware. We, the development community, are striving very hard to achieve that objective. Many users of Android based Micromax devices want to make the phones released by you truly inspirational and surpass any competition. These powerhouses will achieve its true potential only when the development community get the source code of their kernels
It not only benefits the end user but will also be highly beneficial for Micromax in the long run, as these customers will then get utmost satisfaction with their device and will then help in the word-of-mouth publicity of Micromax products all over the world.
A truly inspirational product is born when it inspires the masses and is able to mesmerize the entire world. With great phones like Micromax A100 and A110, we are witnessing a paradigm shift in the mobile industry and need your little help in making this turning point even more monumental.
Besides this, not releasing the sources is a direct violation of GPLv2. It is mandatory for every brand to release the kernel source code for every device they launch.
We hope we will not be disappointed by a customer centric company like yours. Hoping for a positive response.
Warm regards,
A true Micromax fan

Do I change the petition email to the letter in the first post? Seems like a lot more effective than what I've written as the petition email.
Or maybe because people will be sending them independently via the contact page, I'll just let it be.

Please sign our petition requesting Moto to provide the Android N update to the Moto G 2015 and Moto G Turbo.
https://www.change.org/p/motorola-please-include-moto-g-3rd-gen-for-android-nougat-update
You may be wondering why I am asking other Moto owners to support the G3 and Turbo by signing our petition... We are asking Moto to simply do what they said when they released the device, by providing fast updates for 18 months and not drop support for this clearly capable device. This could easily effect all of you in the future just like Moto is trying to do to these devices if we don't call Lenovo/Moto on their clear violation of what they stated previously as if they get away with this, what is to stop them from providing updates for any other device in a far shorter time span than promised.
Part of the beauty of Moto devices was the promise of a near stock Android experience with fast updates for an 18 month period, this is one of the reasons many of us purchased these devices over other choices that were available, we should hold Moto to what they sold us on and letting them get away with not doing that now will likely mean other devices will be dropped before their time in the future.
As of this posting, we have over 680 supporters and could still use everyone's support.
I thank you in advance for your assistance. Feel free to share this link in any appropriate group or community you chose.

I am well aware... I wrote a root tutorial for G4.
Did you read my post? I am asking all Moto users to sign this petition, not because we just want Nougat, but because Moto has a history of 18 months of support for a device and "lightning fast updates" and if they just drop one of the most popular handsets of the last year without following through, what is to stop them from doing it to the G4, G4 Plus, Z, or any other model Moto device going forward.
BTW, I don't even use the Moto G 2015 anymore (my son "borrowed" it when he broke the screen on his HAM2)... I have moved on to the MXPE, but I am still supporting the ENTIRE Moto community where I can, and writing root tutorials and spreading the word on this are some of the ways I can help.

18 months has been the Motorola standard since they agreed (like most major OEMs) to the Google standard for updates in 2011... Google it, its not hard to find. Although "promise" is probably not the right term to use, it has been the standard Moto has used in general for some time where technically possible in unlocked devices (carrier branded devices don't count, because... Carriers). Also, they have failed in their clearly visible marketing promises of "lightning fast updates", Google that and you will find a multitude of references to it.
But I am not here to argue, just ask for your assistance for a few seconds by signing the petition, if you read it and disagree... Fine, walk away... Otherwise we would appreciate everyone's assistance.

Yeah, let's think what we are asking here. Divert developing time from the models that where announced to "support" a model that probably was tested already and had issues that determined the Lenovo team to leave it aside. Sometimes there are small things like... speaker not working right, or camera drivers not being available anymore, or Lenovo not having access the correct documentation for those devices, or... who knows what. The models need to be also tested and approved by carriers in their own homologation labs.
A "petition" like this will just result in put more burden on existing developing team, is not like Lenovo will say "ah, ok, lets hire more devs because those guys at XDA are upset"...
So... it's NO from me.

It runs mostly fine, with a few camera/video and BT glitches... But no VoLTE. We really need the kernel source and proprietary blobs for Nougat for an optimal experience. But I'm sure your CM14 is just like ours, a hack hybrid of Marshmallow and Nougat.
I am sure devs would eventually get everything working, but if we had those things it would be so much easier.

Part of the whole point of this is that getting N on these devices will take minimal work because they are almost identical to models slated to get Nougat already, there shouldn't be any real effects on other devices...

Please post a link to where they promised 18 months of fast updates and I'll sign. Since they never updated to 6.0.1 they have already violated that promise.

I can't find an actual link that says they promised, or it was even their policy, to support devices for 18 months, although Moto did agree to follow Google's recommendations (along with most other major manufacturers) of 18 months of updates for capable devices back in 2011 and has mostly followed it since then. A quick Google search of "Moto promise of fast updates" will show you that they marketed the Moto X Style/Pure and G/E models as getting "lightning fast updates".
If you don't want to sign because you don't want to agree with the petition, fine... but Moto has clearly let down their customers on their updates.
Good luck from a Motorola Atrix 4g owner. If you don't know the story on it, I'll give you a shortened version.
Moto stated on their website that the Atrix would be upgraded (specifically by the model), then said it wasn't going to be.
Until the Moto XPE actually gets upgraded, I'm not believing it. So you might be adding this phone to your petition before it's over.

Moto G is not a flagship, but it is one of Motorola's best selling phones as far as I know. That's a lot of people to screw over and leave on 6.0 December security patch like my wife's phone currently is.
I will definitely sign the petition. I don't own a Moto G 3rd Gen but I bought two Moto g 3rd for my parents a few months ago. they don't care about updates but would be nice to get Nougat on their phones. Lenovo is very lazy when it comes to updates.
I signed it. I don't know why manufacturers are so notorious for having horrible updating habits. It's not that hard to keep phones updated. Not to mention the security risk they run for not updating phones.
Done .
The point is why these companies are so stubborn, they sell us a device and then forgot us.
They have this horrible habit.

Most consumers that buy these phones don't care as much as you think for updates. Heck I got family members with Lg G4 and Galaxy S6 and they've been having an update icon on their phone and don't care for it. It's the bottom line, plus if it's a top seller, they'll just make the next version and sell more. I love your passion and I'm with you, but believe me the cheap phones will not get as much support as the expensive ones, that's just the bottom line.

This is pretty much true for most things today. I've noticed that is a couple of previous phones there was an update that actually occurred right after the 18 month support mark. And sure enough, it seemed to cripple the phone slightly. I'm not surprised one bit.
Good on folks for trying but I wonder how these types of petitions are meant to work. You get the signatures needed, then what? And how is the number of signatures needed determined? Again, credit for trying to speak up about this. I just wanted to understand this method fully.

Isn't the problem here that although Motorola suggested an 18 month cycle, Lenovo are now the owners? As such, Lenovo have brought in their own update policy which supersedes Motorola's previous policy.
I would gladly support your little protest, however, it will be in vain.
We tried this when Sony reneged on their support for the Xperia SP.
I'm sure enthusiasts will rally to create custom ROMS for the G - Xperia SP still lives on with Nougat and so will the Moto G.
Either be resigned to your lot; look forward to custom development or move on.

Status: Waiting on Customer
ps : sorry for long conversation but this is reality
It's an 18 month old device, receiving the latest OS is fairly uncommon for devices of that age.
The fact about such customer service associates is that they don't care about the person they are talking with and nor about the company they are working for. They have automated replies for certain types of queries which they forward or frame sentences having the same meaning.
So even if we ask or request them thousands of times they would simply submit the conclusion of the query to their system and put an end to it. We can only believe about a update if it's stated publicly via their websites, social networks, official blogs, etc.
It just says not eligible for a nougat update, but that could simply mean at this moment in time since officially there is no nougat update for any iteration of the Style/Pure. These guys are typically front end customer service reps and may or may not have any knowledge of what goes on in the programming/development departments.
It also means .....don't call us we'll call you and if we have something to say we'll say it.... So stop bugging us!!!!
Lol the same canned responses came out when I was on the lgg3 in regards to Marshmellow. And we ended up getting it. As others said quit asking front end dumb dumbs who know nothing about this as they only know what their computer says at the moment.
I used to work in customer service. Customer service workers know nothing regarding what goes on behind the scenes... If they did, they'd be getting paid a hell of a lot more than they do. Their only job is to get the customer off the line with as little friction as possible-- as fast as possible. They don't care about your personal grievances nor do they have any influence on the company that they work for. As long as they did not objectively insult you, they did their job regardless if they even answered your question. And Damn was I good at all of the above.... Sometimes depending on how the customer approached me and the customer's level of intelligence I'd throw a sly sideways insult in there in such a way that I could get away with it on the recordings. Moral of the story - don't make the assumption that customer service cares.
Also... Please be nice to customer service reps... Because of all of the above, if you actually want something from them, be SUPER NICE AND APPRECIATIVE... Then and only then will they go out of their way for you..... /end of rant [emoji4]

Also... Please be nice to customer service reps... Because of all of the above, if you actually want something from them, be SUPER NICE AND APPRECIATIVE... Then and only then will they go out of their way for you..... /end of rant [emoji4]

LOL. Being super nice has not always worked in my experience... But then again, if the reps are working from a scripted system and are making me go through a process that I have already been through the first two times I've called about fixing a specific issue after I have informed then of previous calls, they deserve a firmer response.

You are right. I should have clarified. I was speaking about US based customer service. They typically don't have hard "scripts" just guides and touching points. Foreign customer service have the scripts that they will ramble off... because they don't even understand what you are trying to say in the first place. You will never get anywhere with outsourced service... That is the reason why I only deal with companies that have service in the US for the important stuff that I don't play around with (banking and credit cards)

Believe it or not, banks outsource their service too. My gf works for Chase. She's in the Philippines.
According to the only official source we have, the Moto X Pure will still be receiving Nougat.
Yes many companies do outsource. However, some are actually smart about it. My bank doesn't outsource and they have always provided phenomenal service for the hour of day. However, with tech companies, due to bad customer service experience, by the time I have to call them, I have thoroughly researched the issue and tried everything I could. I have found that due to the fact I have some degree of technical knowledge and know how, when I start explaining the issues and what I've done to the rep, they are lost before I get started good. It is at that point I politely ask for someone who can actually understand the jargon.
Yeah Moto's help site says we are still.

We don't know anymore... It used to be through the Motorola Feedback Network, but you can't enroll devices anymore, the link is just gone.

It's an 18 month old device, receiving the latest OS is fairly uncommon for devices of that age.

Yet it has had a limited roll out of n and we have been promised we would get updates. Quicker than we are n should have been pushed to our devices in December and we should be discussing if we will get O or not(not likely we are not Nexus/pixel)

I'm not saying it wont receive N, I'm just pointing out it's not as strong a candidate as a lot of newer devices. News of the soak test sounds promising, but I'm yet to see any evidence of it... You'd think a few benchmarks would be cropping up etc.
