Hi all experts.
I'm having trouble with dropped calls on my M89 smartphone running WM6.0
I have made a post with more info here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=524138
I have made a backup-file of the registry with CeRegEditor.
I'm not an expert in registry-settings, so I'm asking for help to debug the registry-file to see if some strange settings are present. Or perhaps you could advise me to some registry-hacks that will help.
The file can be opened in CeRegEditor. (after unzipping)
The phone drops the first call after a soft-reset after 15-20 seconds.
This happens every time. The next calls can sometimes last 2-3 minutes.
As earlier stated it seems like the GSM-module resets. Perhaps because some process/program/service tries to access the GPRS-network.
I also tried to flash the M89 with a chineese version of WM6.1
It seems that this version works a little bit better, but dropped calls still accur. I can't read chineese, so now I'm back with english WM6.0.
Hope you can help me.
Best regards
STHA
Hi all.
I finally fixed my M89. It turns out the phone crashes and/or disconnects when the GSM reception is bad/lost. And it is really bad with this phone. The internal antenna is a piece of foil located in the buttom of the phone. Right where you hold your hand when using the phone. This makes the reception really bad.
So I took the phone apart and soldered in a DIY-antenna and put 2 pcs. of these "booster antenna stickers" from Ebay inside the phone.
Since then I never had a crash or dropped call.
Regards
Stha
I have been Googling like crazy and I've found several posts on various different boards. There's really no reason to link any of them, most are regarding older HTC phones.
What I've managed to find out, is that on some HTC phones that get this problem (if it's not custom rom or an upgrade issue) the WIFI antenna is loose. It just needs to be opened and re-connected.
ORG POST BELOW:
So, went to bed....turned wifi off because I was low on battery. Woke up, charged the phone. Tried turning on wifi, but all I get is "Error" after a couple of seconds. No wifi icon or anything else in the notifications bar. 3G work fine, can turn this on and off.
What's up doc?
Oh, I have stock rom and havent changed any setting, updated anything or done anything to my phone at all since yesterday.
Bluetooth won't turn on either!
Broken antenna in the case? Bad connector pins?
Anybody?
Did a factory reset, changed SD card, wiped that, did a factory reset. Wifi still won't turn on, no icon in notification bar, get "error" in the "Wireless & networks" menu.
Removed back cover, cleaned contacts, checked for cracks in the cover. Nothing.
The phone is 35 days old.....this is a new record for bricked phone for me.

The store/repair center has, according to the manifest I got, done the following:
- Conductive Fabric.Flash to Chassis.PYD
- Rigid-Flex Board ASSY.Upper board.w/oGPS diversity
antenna.w/o_Regional_ID. PYD
- Adhesive-Double Tape.power-keyFPC.CN-4490.PYD
- Conductive Fabric.Flash to chassis.PYD
Apparently, they changed the whole board. It also appears as the camera is new, because there was a small scratch on the metal casing and that's now gone.

No, they just changed your Main Flex Ribbon Cable, as I just finished repairing mine myself from water damage (power button wasn't working at all and it would randomly turn off either mid call or receiving a call 8/10 times). When I was quoted £110 to fix it at the shop I was like screw this, went on to buy the Main Flex Ribbon Cable (which is essentially the whole upper board of the phone) for £44 off ebay and changed it over myself. This part comes with the camera case which you mention you had a scratch on. When you change the boards over you actually have to unplug the cameras from the old one and plug em into the new one. Everything works fine now except for the wireless, which when I try to turn on, it comes up with error now. I'm just happy that I can use my phone without worrying about missing calls or not being able to turn it on without adb commands while I am out, leaving me essentially stranded....
Link doesn't work.

Can you please post a good link to the file?
If you're rooted, boot into recovery, wipe dalvik cache and cache then reboot. This worked for me.
I'm having the same problem on my HTC One S - When you press the wifi button to connect it instantly turns itself off and reads "Error". Does anyone have a clue why it's doing this??

I am starting this thread to be a place for Terrain owners to come for the latest info on how to root and flash their phones. The Terrain is one of the best "rugged" phones on the market, but it has been abandoned by it's manufacturer, leaving owners to find their own solutions to problems and upgrades. This is actually a good thing price wise as you can now buy a brand new Terrain for less then $85. The Terrain has about as of hardware specs as any other ruggedized smartphone on the market currently, but at one third or a 1/4 of the cost. This makes this phone a huge attraction to anyone who is looking for a rugged waterproof phone on a budget and is why this guide is essential for users.
The NEC Terrain still has plenty of life left and this is why we need to come together and find solutions for it. Please feel free to post you success stories in rooting and flashing your terrain to this thread for the benefit of all. Hopefully, will be able to form a complete guide from all the information that get's posted here.
Thanks.
Hi!
I myself just today recieved this phone, and it would be great at least to debloat it.

Thanks for the post and the links. It appreas that much of the information on these links are still a work in progress. Hopefully this work will continue and we can create a How To guide from this.
For those that may be interested. You can buy the NEC Terrain Unlock on Amazon for $79.99. Here is the link.

Well, I almost bricked it few days ago. :good:
I read a thread about a patch to unlock GSM in CDMA phones and saw there a code to enter some hidden menu. I entered that menu and messed a little with band settings (wanted to get LTE to work with my operator). Next thing I know Terrain stopped receiving any GSM signal and for next hour I tried to fix it. Factory reset got me 2G signal and that's all.
It turned out that the only way to fully fix it is to re-flash firmware or radio module and as we know that can't be done.
Well, this is not about unlocking or flashing, but it is a solution to another problem I and many other have been having with the predictive text bar blocking critical function keys from being accessed. The predictive txt bar is a function of the Adaptxt keyboard app and disabling it does remove that bar, but the keyboard also loses all special character function, upper case letters and numbers. After trying more then a dozen keyboard apps to replace adaptxt, I found one that works and brings back all keyboard functions without the stupid predictive text bar. It is called TouchPal.

Forgive me for this slight OT-posting, but it's not that easy to find people with this device - let alone an unlocked one. I'm located in Germany and the device runs just fine - except for the fact that Tethering does not work - neither USB nor WIFI. The PC can connect to the phone, however the connection in Windows 7 always is shown as being limited (no internet access), while internet on the phone works fine.
GMail - as well as some other functions of google also rarely sync and basically just do so on request, while they sync just fine when being connected to Wifi. And no, background data are not restricted in the settings.
Has anyone experienced something similar?

Well actually I know that message as well. For me changing the APN helped. You could also try to restart the phone. I just remember I also had this problem sometimes. But like I said - even without that particular message I would not get tethering to work.
iDomino: Do you also experience the problem with syncing that I had?
That's funny, actually I haven't noticed syncing problems untill I read your posts. I myself have all the same problems that you mention.
Even more of that, Terrain has some silly feature that TURNS OFF WI-FI if it thinks that that hotspot has no internet connection. It is massively annoying and can drain all your data traffic. The only solution that I found is to install the app "Smart Wi-Fi Toggler", it constantly turns wi-fi on if terrain turns it off, but only in places where I turned wi-fi on myself (like home and work).
It's a pity the phone has so many flaws and due to its tight security and the locked down NEC mobile devision no one can do anything about it. I wonder if this just affects the users who use an unlocked phone outside the US or if people in the US have similar problems. I have tried contacting NEC about this - actually about providing us with some kind of unlock mechanism - but all I got was this:
"Dear Sir,
Thank you for inquiry.
We, however, regret to inform you that our phone is not available about your request.
If you have any issue, would you try to contact the company or shop where you have purchased this model, who might be of help to you.
Thanks and Best Regards,
Fujii /NEC"
By the way, I discovered a new bug: When Roaming the actually used Network-Provider is not shown and I also didn't find a way to choose one...
Do you also experience the problem with syncing that I had?

I had some sync problems and I don't know working methods to fix it.
First time I solved it this way:
turning off apps sync -> open Gmail app -> it will show notification offering to enable synchronization -> use it -> sync works.
But this solution worked just once. (
Other time sync turns on by itself after one day disabled.

Does it crashes once or infinite loop begins? I had infinite loop problem while connecting NEC Terrain to Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Debian or CentOS. Removing "ModemManager" package solved it.

My phone works about 25-30 hours (30 min. calls, 5-10 sms, 30 min. messaging, 2 hours e-mail, internet & other applications. No video/gaming/music at all).
Infinite loop. Removing "modemmanager" helps! Thank you!
Also got spontaneous rebooting after installing FTP Client made by Zifero. :silly: Removing app solved the problem.
Dreaming about root and working wi-fi tethering.

Another Terrain user here!
Hi guys!
i am Kharl
i am another Nec Terrain user here!
due my lifestyle, i needed a phone which could gives me reliability and power under ANY circunstance, that could be done by any rugged phone, BUT i needed querty keyboard, fm radio, gps, gyroscope, accelerometer, loud speakers, that could work worldwide and touchscreen... the only one with those features was the Terrain... and with the extra, that it is amazingly cool, i dont know opther but i find this phone really cute, very sober and elegant design.
well, i live outside USA so, for me, to work it couldnt be locked to ATT, so i was able to get one unlocked.
my phone has almost all the problems you mentioned, althught i am still happy with it and i am not going to change it because its problems does nto interfere a lot with me, BUT of course id like to get those problems sovled.
trying to solve the problem i bough three of thes phones and all the three had the same problems
the first one was by mistake, locked to att, but it had the same problems, random restart and locked hotspot, i sold it, i got a second one, works with any sim, everything fines, but with the same problem, random restart and no hotspot, i bought a third one to see if the problem was with my particular phone... and n luck the same problems.
it has some other minors problems, like no stereo audio recording despite it has two mics and IT STATES IT CAN record in stereo, but thats not a problem, i can deal with that, and sometimes the people at the other side (while in a call) says my voice sounds like from within a box (lack of trebble or too much bass) and when i press the check too much to the phone boddy there is also clarity sound problem.... but thats ok....
regarding the two main problems
random reboot and hotspot
many of us suspect what the cause is
for the random reboot many could think it is a installe app which is causing it... NO, because it does it at factory state, to solve that i dotn think root is needed, there is a certain factory process that is causin to reboot, the reboot is VERY random, could doit threee times in a day or could happen only three times in a week, what i have notice is that it happe lessoften in cold weather.
the hotspot problem IT IS cause because att locked that function, even when the phone is ulocked, that part remain locked because ATT.
what about you guys?
u can try hard reset for begging
Hi All,
I have a Note pro 12.2 Wifi edition (SM-P900) with a bluetooth range of effectively 0. To get it to detect any other BT device i have to put the other device on top of the front facing camera or on the edge of the device close to there. If I move it a couple of centimeters(< 1 inch) the note pro disconnects. when for example the keyboard is touching the upper edge of the note pro and they are paired they work as expected but if I move it a couple of centimeters they disconnect . I tried this with a microsoft bt keyboard, an samsung s3 mini and a note 8.0 and it's the same issue. All the other devices work with each other as expected so it's definitely the note pro.
Things I've tried:
- complete wipe/factory reset
- 2 different oem firmwares flashed through Odin (now on the KOT49H.P900XXUANI1 build) + factory resets
- the latest cm11 release from the forum here
- set the BT visibility timeout to never
- tried with wifi off (just in case)
- tried with and without cover
I have some questions:
- Anyone faced something similar on this device?
- is there a fix or a suggestion I can try?
- is there a debug menu or tool for the Bluetooth to see numeric signal strength in dbm, kernel logs, etc.
- where can I find the pit file for this device? I didn't try complete repartitioning because I couldn't find the pit file.
- is there a disassembly guid for this device? I am tending to think it's either a disconnected (or broken soldering) BT antenna issue or a firmware bug and I prefere to check the disconnected antenna issue myself if it's doable rather than send it to Samsung for a couple of weeks of wait time.
- anything else I should think of ?
Thanks

Hi!
To me this sounds like a hardware issue. A disconnected or improperly connected antenna is a very good bet.
Is this an issue that came along together with an update, or perhaps app installation?
If it´s an issue right from you recieved the tablet i´d send it back if it´s still under warranty.
I have previously removed the back of my -905. It´s not that difficult.
You´ll need a sturdy plastic separation tool of some kind. The back is very thightly attached with closely placed plastic clips so a fairly high amount of force is needed to begin with. A guitar pick won´t cut the mustard.
I found it easiest to lay the tablet down front facing downwards on something flat that lifts the tablet about an inch off the table. This gives your hand room for the "right angle of attack" I started at the top right next to the IR-diode.

Elo, Thanks.
I bought it as an immaculate second hand from ebay (it didn't have a tripped knox at the time) and had it for a month before getting a BT keyboard to use it with by which time I've already had routed it and tried different firmwares. So can't tell if it's a software update that messed it up.
In fact, I wasted a couple of days going through different firmwares before discovering the range issue by chance. At first I just thought it's an incompatibility between the keyboard and the tablet.
I will try to take it apart; I'm hoping to get the "prying" kit tomorrow. Thanks for posting the pics, I was going to try from the front but from your pictures I see I have to remove the back cover.
Cheers,
Fadi
Hi !
I bought a used G8231 that was sold as defective, "Microphone not working".
That was no problem as i just wanted to play with the 960 FPS Video function for sports.
BUT when i received it also video shooting did not work as it complains about another device using resources. As still photos work fine i guess it complains about not beeing able to use the microphone.
Further diagnostics show that also the speakers do not work, all else seems okay.
The phone is useless for me like this as i solely wanted to paly with the 960 FPS video.
Is this a known Hardware or Software defect ?
Do you have any idea how to at least get video recording going ?
Thanks for help !
Greetings,
Ender
It helps if you post any troubleshooting steps you've already taken and to tell us the exact error message.
The first course of action is to factory reset the phone or even reflash the stock firmware in order to rule out possible software problems, if the issue persists then double check the hardware is non-functional by going to the dailer and bring up the service menu by entering *#*#7378423#*#* then go to tests and test the components you're having issues with.
If you've confirmed they do not work, the next step would be to perform a teardown, you could try removing the microphone and booting it up, it looks like its on its own little board so if that works you can just remove the connector from it and play with the camera all you want, if not then consider buying a new microphone or another broken phone and you'll probably want to buy some adhesive while you're at it or some double sided tape.
Hi !
Thanks for the answer, i guess i did all "usual" stufflike down & upgrading inkcluding factory reset and safe mode tests.
I even got the litle mic board but i hesitated as i feared to break the display in the process...
But if thats the next logical step...
Ender
I have the same exact problem. Microphone and speakers do not work. It all happened when I updated to Android 8 Oreo.
The repair center says it is because it is bent and there is a crack in it. Probably motherboard is bent too much. I hesitate to believe them because the phone was bent long before the problems occured.
For me, listening to music/youtube is no problem if I use a Bluetooth device. However - and this is where I feel it is not hardware related - the microphone does not work using bluetooth. Phone applications just crash when I try making a call and when I perform "system test" of the microphone the test application/support application crashes.
Can it really be hardware when even bluetooth microphone does not work?
Cordially,
Martin Book
