Can't network unlock Nexus 5 (UK)? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I've just bought an used Nexus 5 off eBay (UK). Seller mentioned it was network locked to BT mobile.
When I insert my giffgaff SIM card I get Emergency calls only and no signal. I was about to buy an unlock code but I can't seem to find a way to display the prompt to enter the unlock code.
I've tried the methods described here: http://m.sim-unlock.net/simlock/LG/Nexus_5/ but I simply don't get any prompt.
What can I do to network unlock my Nexus 5?
Thanks!

Honestly man, I've never seen a "network locked" nexus, root it and flash a custom rom, if u still get no signal, then u got beat and most likely the device is blacklisted, meaning someone reported it stolen, lost, etc. in which case u got beat for whatever u laid for the device. I've never heard of a network locked nexus, even the US carriers that had it on network u could plop any Sim in it and use it fine. I think u got played and it's a stilen/lost phone that has been blacklisted, hears what u can do, call your service provider and have them run the imei number and see if it's compatible, if it is blacklisted, they will tell you, but hurry up bcuz ebay only gives u a certain exchange/buyers insurance time, and after that 14 days or whatever ur hit

Th nexus phones are all factory unlocked and have never been locked to a carrier, otherwise, the phone can't carry the nexus branding.
Is the phone a d820 or d821?

I've checked the IMEI and is not blacklisted.
If it's truly unlocked and it just gives me Emergency calls only maybe it's faulty then?
Do you think flashing a stick ROM solve the issue?

It's a D821. If it's truly unlocked then it's faulty because I can't get any signal, right?
Anything I should try before returning the phone?

So many places, don't know where to answer. Try another sim card or it's hardware issue. In that case, return the phone while you can
Sent from my hammerhead using XDA Labs

Call your carrier and ask them if they need to validate the IMEI on their system? If there is no need for imei validation, I'd return it.

Try this: if it's a D821 dial 2945#*821# and go to "Network Lock"; if it's a D820 dial 2945#*820# and go to "Network Lock";
Now your phone should prompt for the unlock code. If it works, you cand get an unlock code for LG Nexus 5 from here: https://www.unlockradar.com/unlock-lg/nexus-5

Can a nexus b locked??

You can't use Nexus 5s bought from T-Mobile on Sprint's network.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

You should be able to use the T-Mobile nexus 5 if you call sprint and have them authorize the imei, no? Isn't sprint cdma? Doesn't sprint and Verizon use the sim slot for LTE only? Also, not being able to use a T-Mobile nexus 5 on sprint should not automatically mean the phone is locked to T-Mobile or any carrier.

Inspire on Simple Mobile

Hey guys wondering if someone else is in the Pacific Northwest area that is on Simple Mobile with the Inspire. What I would like to know is there any better radios for the inspire that youve noticed any change in signal reception or anything than the stock radio.

search around a bit. radio is subjective, two people with the same phone and same service in the same room will get different results with radios. best thing is try a few out and see if any are better for you.
Simple mobile uses tmobile bands therefore you only will get edge speeds, try the Att go phone sim from Walmart you'll get great speeds and maybe straight talk

The one issue with GoPhone is that if the SIM has been activated in a different phone, and less than 6 months have passed since it was activated, you will likely get an IMEI locked message. This doesn't mean there is any issue with the Inspire, simply that the GoPhone SIM is locked to the IMEI of the phone it was activated in.
I use red pocket mobile. In northern cali. Runs on ATT hspa plus. Not bad no issues. T mobile doesn't offer a 3g plan. Red pocket is 50-60. Might want to look into it.

The six month policy is for unlocking the phone to other carriers. you have it backwards, my friend. If you call them and tell them that you are changing phones because the one it was activated on was damaged or non functional anymore, they will send a code to the phone to unlock the SIM. I think they can only do that for a SIM that is locked to an Android. If it was activated on a non-smart phone, you can go to any AT&T store and tell them you want to change phones and they will do it.

Not sure what you found to be incorrect in my statement. I never claimed the gophone sim couldn't be unlocked to be used in the inspire, just that it is locked by default to the phone that it is activated in. Also, though what you say is true about being able to get it changed, by default AT&T personnel don't seem to be able to diagnose the problem, when you give them the error message. A friend of mine had this issue when he tried to use a gophone sim in a nokia smartphone, and after going to the AT&T store, calling them up, etc, he asked me and I told him his SIM was probably locked to the phone it was activated in. Once he knew this, he called, and they unlocked it. However, neither the store nor customer service was able to help him, until he told them what the problem was. I also picked up the inspire I am using now for cheap, because the seller tried putting a gophone sim in it, and it came up with an "IMEI Locked" message. He assumed there was a problem with the phone, and AT&T customer service was unable to help him. Knowing the issue with GoPhone sims, I bought the phone, and have had no issues with it. So, though what you say is true, you have to know about the gophone simlock issue, in order to get it resolved.

[Q] Bought Used 1S, only working on AT&T

Alright so, as the title says, bought it from Craigslist and it currently won't work on T-mo. The guy was on the phone with it before I bought it (saw him) so it obviously does work. Do I have to flash a t-mo radio or can I just factory reset and it'll be fine? I don't really mind not having root at the moment. It's on LeeDrOiD if that helps. Will post any other necessary info.
So you installed a T-Mobile SIM and it said it wasn't an authorized SIM? Or are you trying to connect to T-Mobile with an AT&T SIM? Otherwise it should work fine.

My previous T-mo SIM. So I guess it's unauthorized for the device but I've had the Sim (of course) for years.
Weird. Is it an international One S, or does it say T-Mobile on the front? I've never heard of being able to lock a device to a new carrier...
You could always try the SIM unlock tutorial that's in the development section.

Is the current sim active? It should work but not WiFi calling. Try to go T-Mobile store and grab another sim.

the first thing I would do is head down to a T-Mo store to get a new sim card.
Yes, the SIM is activated. Been using it for about 5 years now, was in my N1, Sensation, and a flip phone for a while. Though I did get it cut for micro-SIM from a cutter (not done by myself). Perhaps it got screwed up? Though in the settings it can still pick up my #. And yup, it has T-Mobile at the top. Alright, I'll swap out the SIM and bump this up if that doesn't work.
More info: It keeps popping up to register with a network, and I select t-mo but it says "unable to register with select carrier".
Good chance it is blacklisted. People sell phones locally and then dont pay their bills on contract or report it lost or stolen and TMobile blacklist the IMEI. I learned my lesson. It happened to me twice over Craigslist. It will only work on ATT if it is. You can call TMobile or go into the store and they can tell you if it is.

I would almost bet that a new sim will solve your problem here. I remember when I got a new phone with T-Mo and still had a 6-7 year old sim card. I put it in the new phone and it would not work due to incompatibility with the new network specs etc. A new sim solved the problem. Let us know how the new sim works.

that happend to me in my tmobile sensation. i bought a T-mob htc sensation 4g and unlocked it to use it in telcel mexico, after some months i decided to change company and put it a movistar simcard, but it didnt read it; the phone was re-locked to telcel in a strange way (i dont know how)
the only thing i did, was to re-use the unlock method for the htc sensation and everything was fine again...
so, try to use the unlock method for the htc one S and check if that helps you

I agree.
Networks have changed a lot in the last few years. A 5-yo sim card is likely to be the cause of the problem.
If the network is just sim-locked you would get an 'Insert unlock code' message [or similar].

Update:
Alas, getting a MircoSim did not work. Perhaps it is blacklisted (I tried asking the guy there and he said he couldn't check, ugh). So, For now, I'm going to try to get a refund (guy said he was willing to) or try to trade it on Craigslist for something that will work. Unless someone can send over a quick guide on how to unlock the SIM reader. I tried the one that is posted and I never got the options that should have popped up.

Choose "Phone information"
Scroll down to Radio, see if it's On or Off.
Maybe pretty with it, turn it off turn it on see if it give you anything
When my One S was blacklisted, it gave me the same error.
You can call or chat online with T-Mobile support, and they'll tell you if it's blacklisted.

Will check tomorrow whether it's truly been blacklisted or not. And I had actually tried the radio thing earlier I was very hopeful that would work.

Can I simunlock i9020A for international use?

I'm about to buy a Nexus S i9020A (AT&T) on eBay, but I need to know if there's an application here to simunlock it or a good site to buy a code (if you have a website, please tell me price). I've been reading and in one thread someone replied saying It's already unlocked and that Nexus device sold has always been sim unlocked (even those sold subsidized by the carriers)... so I don't know what to think about it. In another thread the user said he bought on in Craigslist and he said it was unlocked and rooted... which got my attention the "unlocked" part... so, there's a way to simunlocked or not?
Please help me.
I'm waiting for your response to buy it.
Best regards.
It will probably be unlocked but if it isn't, the Nexus is is one of the easiest phones to unlock. Look up a tutorial somewhere here on xda, or wait for a more senior member to give you his advice here.

"Unlocked" wrt/Nexus S refers to bootloader unlocking. IIRC the Nexus S cannot be SIM-locked at all - the baseband doesn't support it.
It doesn't need to be Sim unlocked. They are all unlocked by default.

It's obvious it doesn't work with a T-Mobile SIM card.
The Nexus S GSM has 2 versions:
i9020A, working on HSDPA 850/1900/2100
i9020T, working on HSDPA 900/1700/2100
Both are GSM, but different bands. They're not "software locked" but simply unable to connect because it's a modem issue.
So if you have a T-Mobile SIM, you need a Nexus S whose model number is I9020T

Wrong again, in parts. Since we're not talking about the US only.
Not all operators around the world actually serve their users with 2G. Just up north, in the beautiful country called Canada, many operators only offer 3G, including mine. Thus, in the end, you end up with no service if 3G isn't supported.

[Q] Nexus 5 Unlocked & AT&T Data Plans

I've never had a smart phone. I've always just used a little cheap "texting" phone with a regular sized SIM card from AT&T.
I want my first smartphone and I've decided that I like the Nexus 5 because I use to own a Nexus 7 Tablet, in which I assume are similar in some ways. I live in CA, USA
My question is whether I would have to get a new SIM card from AT&T. Right now I have a family plan with no Data services. Just an unlimited texting service and minutes. I'm always around Wi--Fi so I feel that I won't ever need any kind of data plan (2g,3g,4g,LTE). Because the Nexus 5 is unlocked, I was questioning whether AT&T would force me to purchase a Data Plan for this phone. Is there any way around it as of right now? Do I need to show them my phone to get a new SIM card (if needed?
Edit: I was doing some research and found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2507422 , but it wasn't much of help since the phone wasn't out at the time.
Does this work?
You have two choices for the SIM card.
- cut it down to Micro SIM size
- Get a new Micro SIM card from AT&T
Here is the problem that you'll most likely run in to.
When you put that SIM card in your Nexus 5 the good folks at ATT will detect it's a smartphone and require you to get a data plan for the phone.
nexus 4 was detected by at&t
nexus 5 will be as well, especially since it'll be sold by t-mobile (t-mobile phones are detected on at&t, the two carriers probably share IMEI lists)
some people have luck by first adding a data block (no MMS though) on the line while using a dumbphone, then switching SIMs (but you'll need to keep that data block)

as I said, try the "put data block on line before switching sim to nexus 5, keep data off on the nexus 5"...
if it doesn't work, then move away from att
Agree with the above comment. A friend of mine did the same thing with his Nexus 4 and he still hasn't been caught by Att and he got the phone since last March. So call Att from your dumbphone and cancel data access.
Could you let us know how it goes?

[Q] Nexus 5 carrier locked?

Whats up guys, I'm facing one hell of a dilemma. I purchased a Nexus 5 from craigslist. The person said it was bought from Google. None the less I did a IMEI check on Swappa when I bought it and it came out clean. The person was using it on T-Mobile pre-paid so I went with the hunch that it was not bought on the JUMP program. Unfortunately, at that time they didn't have their sim in the phone so I could see it working on T-Mobile.
Since, I'm on Verizon I couldn't test the phone out in person. The phone is for my mom who is on AT&T. When I popped her SIM in the phone was showing "No Service", despite having the correct AT&T APN. I googled and googled and noticed people were saying the battery cover could affect it. Well this phone has a loose battery on the right side (when looking at the phone with the screen up) so I pushed on the battery cover and still "No Service". Lastly, I flashed the factory images from Google. When the phone booted back up it was still saying "No Service" but then showed empty/gray bars and detected it was on AT&T. Every now and then I might get one blip of white inside the bars, but then it immediately goes back to empty gray bars or "no service". I can't make or receive calls from the phone. Let's not even talk about cellular data.
I called Google, low and behold the phone wasn't purchased from them. Then I called LG and LG said its a T-Mobile phone. By chance do you guys know if T-Mobile sim locks the Nexus 5 when you're making payments? I can't figure out if this phone has bad radios or it has some lock in place by T-Mobile. Is "No Service" or empty gray bars a symptom of carrier lock?
TL;DR: Does T-Mobile sim lock the Nexus 5 when you finance the device from them?

My first suggestion would be to check if the phone is blacklisted from this website http://checkesnfree.com/

Wait the N5 doesn't have a removable battery, or a cover that comes off. How'd you push it in?
Anyways, I purchased my N5 from T-Mobile directly. After some issues with service in my area I went to an ATT store and asked if I could use it on their network. The rep at the store said yes, it would work, but since they don't actually carry the phone I could not insure it with them. She seemed very confident it wasn't carrier locked which is what I've heard all around. I can't confirm that though, I stayed with T-Mobile.
P.S. Questions belong in the Q+A section, not general.
I don't think Verizon have approved the n5 for their network. Try a SIM from another operator or call Verizon to confirm.

Did you even read the thread? He said he couldn't test because he has Verizon. N5 doesn't operate on Verizon. He was asking about ATT... He tried an ATT SIM already and it didn't work.
Sorry I'll assume the op hasn't been scammed.
Does the phone display an imei and baseband in the about phone section of settings?

Guys, I understand it's a unlocked phone. I just want to know if T-Mobile puts a lock on the phone when you finance from them.
Yes, the imei is in the settings and yes its clean.
Not a smart move, buying a phone from somebody on craigslist without checking to see if it works. No receipt, didn't check to see if it was blacklisted, and it has a loose back cover...Could have faulty hardware, might have water damage, might be blacklisted...lesson learned. Good luck.

No, they don't. They can blacklist the imei by which you won't be able to use a T-mobile sim. But they can't carrier lock the device.

Thanks Vin, then I assume it's a hardware issue. If anyone wants to buy this N5 PM me I just want to cut my losses.
If I am not wrong, nexus 5 bought from us tmob cant be used on att because att dont have the IMEI number of the tmob nexus 5s in their database which required to be able to connect att network

No doubt about that, but I have bought numerous phones from Craigslist, Always for Verizon though. This was my first venture into the GSM realm.
Already checked the moisture sensor in the sim tray and it's white. Like I said earlier I checked the imei at the time of purchase and that was clean as well. My mistake was not having a GSM sim and thus not testing the device

Not quite. Both swappa and checkesnfree report the imei as clean.

Just a thought but it's best you take it out of the equation first.. Have you checked in settings-about and see whether the IMEI is showing up?
Have you tried flashing the different radios and see whether it helps??

I flashed the factory image. Guess I'll try the radios.

Yeah, may be it'll work for you. What about the IMEI showing up in Settings-About? Checked it??
