I have a known problem. My device won't boot, apps all crash because of a file permissions error.
I replaced system/etc/permissions/ platform.xml
I tried to re-enable the original the simple way, using a root explorer, but permissions to write are.. well corrupted. This is causing all system services to fail at boot and the tablet to crash. Basically it looks like I'm stuck with trying to repair it from recovery, or download mode (Odin) and I do not have a custom recovery installed, stock only.
I messed this up trying to fix the SDcard write permissions, my audio tagger couldn't rename mp3s. Well, I have the original platform.xml.bak saved but need to replace the corrupt platform.xml.
Help? Quick fix maybe?

My TF101 was stuck in a CWM bootloop and I used adb to push a few files (stock rom and new recovery) into the directory "/sdcard/Download"...
I then installed those and fixed the bootloop issue but now whenever I try to download something in Chrome or the Stock Browser, it fails. I now look into the filesystem and realize that I have a folder "/sdcard/Download" which I created with adb... and "/sdcard/download" which is from my old installation.
I'm unable to delete the files I put in "/sdcard/Download" and I'm thinking there's some problems with permissions. I rooted my device again and tried to use adb to delete those files and that directory but I get a permission denied message.
Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this so I can fix my downloading issues?
Try this method:
1. Boot into recovery mode,
2. then select cwm,
3. select advanced
4. select fix permissions then reboot.
Hope that would work

Thanks, I tried that also and it didn't work.
I forgot to mention, I also did "su" before I tried to erase through ADB.
I checked out the permissions through chmod and both download folders and files have the same permissions. Am I supposed to do something with mounting that directory?
I don't think it has anything to do with your previous bootloop bro. This happened to me today as well. I didn't do anything specific to fix it. Like you said, browser downloads weren't working. Try Overskreen. I haven't gone back and tried again on Chrome or any other browser I have other than Overskreen because I just thought Chrome was being screwy.

I've tried on Chrome, and it fails too. I don't think it's related to my previous bootloop problem, I think it's because I created a folder called, "/sdcard/Download" with ADB because if I try to add a file to that directory, I get a Permission Denied error.
Maybe try to clear your browser's data and catche.

Well i would think that you can just use terminal or a adb root session and change permissions on that folder to read/write. it's odd to me that you didn't already have that folder. or at least /mnt/sdcard/Download

I tried to modify the folder/files through adb root session... Doing a chmod shows that the folder and files have write permissions already. I'm still am unable to modify any files in the folder or the folder itself.
I was able to find a workaround because Dolphin Browser HD uses "mnt/sdcard/download". So now I can use Dolphin to download files from the internet but Chrome/Stock Browser still don't work.
I just installed jelly bean on my Samsun GS3 SCH-R530U, and now whenever I Odin CWM, it will boot only one time when I boot to it, after that I get a fallen over robot icon from samsung, and their old boot menu. This means I have to flash it every time I want to backup or restore a nandroid backup. Is there some way I can get past this? Do I need a newer CWM? Has Samsung found a way to disable CWM?
try this
as a nexus s owner got this issue in past, seems to be caused cause from GB on in /system/etc there is a install-recovery.sh wich overwrite all the recovery you have installed every time your phone boot up, just solved checking for this file and deleted or renamed (as you want) so in booting the CWM won't be deleted and overwrited by the original one (wich is called install-recovery.sh)
To be clear using root explorer os similar point to this file in /system/etc, then delete or rename, if it tells you can't do cause is read only file system switch from R/W to R/O
Not entirely sure but I think flashing recovery.IMG file on Mobile Odin solved the issue for me.
International S III 16GB / Dualboot 4.1.2 Stock & Cyanogenmod 10.1 / Gokhan's SK
Worthy path to pursue

This sounds like a good path to pursue, but I can't find any "install-recovery.sh" anywhere in the system. Could it be named something else, but have the same function?
Accidentally found a workaround -PROBLEM SOLVED 4 me
I found that after using clockworkmod recover, if I remove battery, re-insert battery and then boot phone in normal way, instead of using CWM menu to reboot, it doesn't get over-written. I put in my Title that my problem was solved. Some forums have some other way to indicate this, but I couldn't figure out how on this forum.
Hi, I have a spice stellar mi 500. i tried rooting the phone which worked fine and then I tried removing some of the system apps like Rail yatra,, facebook, dhingana. i was able to remove them and then i finally booted my device. Since then I am getting the error "unfortunately system UI has stopped working" I am not able to open apps or receive calls. the system hangs. not even able to unroot the phone now as any apps will hang. even the control bar does not slide from the top. I am screwed. I have tried factory reset several times. in all different ways like from with system recovery or android settings. but i guess i am out of luck. can someone help me. :crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:

You have most probably messed the systemUI.apk which is located in /system/app or files associated with it. Did you remove any other apk's in which you weren't sure what it does?
In this case, Factory reset won't work because it just wipes user data and /system partition remains in tact. The nearest possible thing to do is to flash a stock ROM if exists or copy the deleted apk's borrowing from some one else's phone and place those apk's in /system/app partition setting the correct permission.
I remember exactly what I deleted. I I uninstalled Dhingana.com, Facebook and Rail yatra. I cannot start third party apps though I can install them. So I am not sure how to place the systemUI.apk in the directory /system/app. Can it be done through inbuilt file manager?

Nope, I guess not possible through default file manager. You have to use ES File Explorer File Manager or Root Explorer to place it in /system/app and change its permissions to rw-r-r.

I tried replacing systemUI.apk to \system\app folder using esexplorer but i got error. error: copy failed.
is there a possibility I can get hold of a stock rom and flash it using update from SD card. the default android update manager?

Make sure you've mounted the /system partition as R/W before attempting to Copy or setting permissions.

now how do i do that ? sorry for my questions.
okay, I successfully swapped my internal and external sdcards on my axiom. I used the internal-external swap app found in the play store. It was working alright until I tried changing my boot animation. when I booted into cwm I discovered I could not mount my sdcard anymore effectivly halting my attempts to change my boot animation. I assume it has to do with this swap app. my questions are. is the app what is causing my inability to mount my sdcard from recovery and if I remove the app will the xposed module, which allows the same thing, only better, qork for me or has nobody run into this problem?
Sent from my SCH-R830 using xda app-developers app
It seems that your recovery doesn't support the swapping.
Why don't you change the boot animation manually with a root explorer?
Try this
Manually change the boot animation without going into recovery
Firstly open the cwm zip using es file explorer and navigate to /system/media. there you will find bootanimation.zip copy it and navigate to device/system/media and paste it there. Provide the root permissions
Then select that bootanimaion.zip and open properties click on permissions - change and change it to rw- r-- r-- (Very important)
Reboot and done.
so, I removed the sdcard swapping app and just enabled the xposed module claiming to re-enable write/read to extsdcard. when I tried to flash bootanimation4u.zip with cwm I am still getting the unable to mount /sdcard error. in fact I cannot mount any directories in cwm. I got rom toolbox, amazing app btw, and tried to flash a zip from within the app and received a notice about cwm developers not allowing any apps bit thier own to function in conjunction with cwm recovery. the app suggested I flash twrp recovery. I'm thinking flashing a new recovery will eliminate the inability to mount sdcard and allow me to use rom toolbox more effectivly, am I on the right logic path here, or have I fully derailed?

Oh, my phone uses qmg files for boot animations, hence my attempt to use bootanimation4u. I am still unclear how that kajigger works, if at all.

Easiest way is probably to install a custom rom with native sdswap support + changeable bootanimation instead of using any third party apps...
yeah, that was my first choice but I have had zero luck finding a custom rom for my axiom. if anybody has come across one I would greatly appreciate the info!

I'm trying to convert an app to a system app by placing it in /system/system/priv-app. I'm rooted using Magisk, but otherwise running completely stock Pie, with stock recovery installed. Here's what I've tried:
1. Using Magisk's Terminal App Systemizer module. This was the first approach I tried.
2. Using ES File Explorer to move the folder and change permissions.
3. Using Link2SD to make app into a system app.
4. Booting into TWRP using Fastboot, then using TWRP's File Manager to move the app into the /priv-app folder and set permissions.
5. Following the directions here to place the .apk directly into the root of the priv-app folder.
6. Following the directions here to make a folder for the app inside of /priv-app through adb shell and placing the .apk inside that folder.
Each time I've done this, when I try and reboot my phone it hangs during the boot sequence on the G logo with a little loading bar at the bottom. After a little while, the phone will automatically reboot into recovery and prompt me to either do a factory reset or try again (trying again causes a bootloop). I can boot back into the bootloader using the hardware keys and use fastboot to get TWRP running. From there, if I delete the .apk inside the /priv-app folder my phone will boot as normal. Note that I've had to sideload the OTA image when I used Magisk/Link2SD to systemize the app, as I couldn't find the app inside the /priv-app folder at all.
I've tried 2 different APKs with the same result. I make sure to set the proper permissions before rebooting, but it would appear that I'm doing something wrong with the .apk, since the problem goes away as soon as I delete it from the /priv-app folder.
Any help? What am I doing wrong?
