Wut
I seem to have the same issue.
Had latest M preview, including an OTA some week ago. No root(for the moment)
Yesterday morning I noticed that the phone were off, so pressed the power button to start it.
It got stuck on the first boot screen where it shows the open lock for unlocked bootloader.
After a while, I long-pressed the power button to try to reboot it, after that it never started.
If I connect it to my computer and hold the volume down + power buttons for like 10-15 seconds, I get the "USB-device connecting" sound from windows, quickly repeated by "USB-device disconnected" sound.
So apparently, something works and it's not totally bricked... However, where to go from here?
What's the issue exactly now??

Agreed, Nexus 5x, and no, that's no troll. I'm eagerly waiting for the next Nexus 5 (2015) version to come out. Supposedly will be officially announced Sept 29. We've seen this game before, so it's very very likely. I'm pretty sure that's how all new phone marketing campaigns work these with these viral "leaks". It certainly hooks me and builds my anticipation and I scour for the latest leaked photo and specs. Although I'm much less interested than I was for the Galaxy Nexus and original Nexus 5. But it's perfect timing now because I need a replacement. It's gonna be awesome.
This sounds like your power button. Same thing just happened to me and my Nexus is pretty much toast at this point. Fortunately I have a backup N5 (still on KitKat, which I'm actually digging!).
Plug in, and repeatedly press your power button, fast. Keep pressing it, you'll prob get it to boot all the way to homescreen. You might even get it to charge up, but it could just reboot again, and eventually completely drain. On reboot, if it's plugged in it will bootloop, so you have to keep pressing that power button. You can replace the button but it looks like a complete pain in the arse. Check youtube. You can also slam it real hard to fix the power button and keep it from bootlooping, and then get an app to tie power to your volume button, or get gravity screen app to unlock/power-on via motion and/or the proximity sensor. Works pretty well, but that power button will still probably unseat itself inside the device and bootloop again. Weird because at first it seems like software issue, but it's really a hardware one...

^^ oh nevermind. Just saw this. No idea what that is. Can you get to fastboot? Power-on and volume down. That's weird. Call Google or take it to AT&T.
I'd try to factory reset or something. Or ADB in somehow. Weird.

I have a nexus 5 that was rooted on stock rom. I have not made any changes recently to anything. I went to wake the phone and got nothing. I used vol down and power to get into bootloader. Selected start and then the phone sat on the google logo for 5 mins. I again tried vol down and power and it went off and now will not do anything with any button combo. I charged it overnight in case the battery was just dead. Nothing this morning. I then tried to plug it into the computer and it looked for drivers for QSUSB_BULK. Never seen this before. It also shows up in device manager and an unknown device with that same title. I assume that this is a "hard brick" but surprised it just came out of the blue... Is there any chance of saving the phone?

Ah, that sucks! I'm a little confused though, because you said that the button combos do nothing now, but when you now plug it into the PC, it attempts to load different / incorrect drivers? Is the screen just black and it's trying to load the drivers still or...? Have you tried to manually load the drivers when it's showing the unknown device? Tried different USB cables and / or ports? I realize the phone is not acting correctly, but it's best to eliminate the easy things first.
I don't think its the screen, I saw it shut off then never do anything again. I have tried different cables and ports. The phone never booted back into android I know that much. Trying to load drivers or use nexus tool kit to look for adb or fastboot devices does nothing either.
I also do not get a light or anything on the screen when I plug in the charger.
Yea, I wasn't thinking it was the screen itself. I was just wondering if now the phone is "on" and attempting to load drivers, albeit incorrectly or not at all, and the screen was still dark/off? What computer OS are you using? I'm assuming Windows due to the unknown device error, but which iteration: XP/Vista/7/8/8.1? What is the error when you manually try to load the drivers - not with a tool kit? Have you tried another cord / USB port / PC? Like I mentioned earlier, it's obviously a phone issue, but sometimes just trying these different things can at least get it to load the drivers correctly where you could at least fastboot the system back to the phone.
Ok
You are on the qualcomm cpu strict mode.
Keep it like that for ten -15 minutes the battery will charge.
After that keep it plugued in and press the power button until you hear the sound that the device is disconnected.
After that vol down + power right after
Should work

Hi,
I've been using Nexus 5 since Nov '13, but this is the first time i'm facing a serious issue in my device.
I was browsing through Chrome and my Battery was 73%, all of a sudden my device rebooted and here comes the main issue/problem.
My device is suffering a boot loop only displaying the google logo for 3-5 seconds and again it reboots.
Occasionally the boot animation starts but no success, again it reboots.
I tried to enter fastboot menu, it enters but it doesn't stay there for not more than 2 seconds. So I can't make any choice over there.
I tried all the combinations (VOL UP+ Power, VOL DOWN+Power, pressing all the buttons), but its of no use.
My device is out of power now.
Even when I plug my device to charger/computer its not showing the battery charging animation instead the reboot loop occurs.
I suspect it can be a problem with the power button in the board.
What do you guys think?
Is there any Solution for this weird problem?
hoping for possible and positive replies.
My device details:
I'm running Stock Android 4.4.4 with stock kernel.(not modified any system files)
TWRP recovery V 2.7.1.1
UNLOCKED ( @present Locked)
ROOTED. @present Unrooted)
Try pressing the power button hard and see if it helps. Probably a power button failure.

Thanks for your suggestion, but I tried holding the power button for more than couple of minutes, No use of it.
While charging I can't even completely turn off the device, the bootloop occurs continuosly.
I've kept in charge for about 30 minutes but no change in its behaviour.
I haven't recorded the video, I searched youtube and found the exact problem.

As I said earlier, it's most probably a power button failure. RMA the device or get it repaired at a LG service center.

Yes you can. Google don't care about root and unlock, just like LG in case of nexus 5 because it is a google phone.

If you've bought your phone from google play store, then RMA it. Google accepts rooted/unlocked devices as well. However, LG is a different story altogether. Here in India, they don't provide warranty if the bootloader is unlocked. Whether it's a nexus device or not. You will need to check it up.
Thanks a lot.

It might be an issue with the power button.
In my case it was the power button, which tends to rattle and its not fit enough.
As I lost the copy of bill, i can't send the device to LG care.
So today morning I tried pressing the power button and as soon as the google logo appears I started to tap fast at the back cover with my finger right behind the power button.
SURPRISE! the device booted succesfully and was using for about couple of minutes.
Again it started to boot loop.
did the same procedure to boot. now my device is running for more than three hours and I don't know when it would again go to bootloop.
Its just the problem with my power button and I will soon get the bill copy from my retailer so that i will send the device for repair/replacement.
Meanwhile I've locked my device and set the tamper flag to false.
EDIT:- Now my device is back to normal. Thanks for your valuable responses. Its just the power button failure.
Useless service centers!
Today I went with my device to LG service center, but they were not ready to accept my words regarding this issue.
Surprisingly I found almost more than 6 peoples who bought their Nexus 5 for the same reason.
The technical person in the service center said that it might be due to software update and he suggested a silly solution, After each OTA update he asked me to uninstall each and every app and reinstall again.
I was repeatedly arguing him that it was a Hardware problem and its related to power button, he is not ready to take my words.
I also explained that when the problem existed in my mobile, in OFF condition if device is shaked too much it turns ON without even pressing the power button.
As many of them were waiting there with the same problem I just showed live demo of the problem.
Finally they said if again the problem occurs we should remove the cover and disconnect the battery and then again reconnect it.
Really frustrated spending a whole day in the service center. Main reason is the person in the service centers and technically backward and they were not able to understand the problem.
Is there any other solution available other than service center (Is there any possibilites of contacting google tech support directly) so that my power button gets repaired before the warranty ends!!!!!!
Progress

THANK YOU!!! This is the most helpful tip I've found so far! I started tapping its back part while charging the battery, and then I was able to turn it on, but when I quit tapping it the phone shuts down. It is really something related to the power button because the phone was locking itself constantly while it was working. I made some progress and I will keep trying until I make it work permanently. If you have any more helpful tip, please, share it with us! I've been trying to fix it for 3 weeks and Im getting crazy with this! Also, I moved to Brazil and there's no warranty here, so that's why Im trying to fix it by myself.
Did you contact Google and get it finally fixed?
Thank you and good luck!
i faced the exact same problem..
initially i thought it's a software problem..but in reality it was a hardware fault.. power button was stuck may be..
after repeatedly pressing the power button phone finally booted up..
thanks for the tip
I have the same problem I don't know if I can give the phone to LG care cause I'm in Mexico and I shop my nexus in usa. I have noticed that if I unplug the phone to the charger while Google logo is on the device turns off
Started happening to me a few hours ago....
tapping close to the power button seems to work but it shuts down once u stop.
attempted to repair it myself but im not seeing anything physically wrong with the tiny power button (inside).
leaving the phone off for a few hours. hope that works.....anyone else found a solution besides returning it to Google?
edit: I solved the problem!!!! (voided my warranty as well. lol)
the physical power button (internal) was stuck.
1. I opened the nexus 5 (using any repair guide)
2. I located the internal power button (very tiny)
3. I gave it a few taps with the base of my screwdriver (not too hard but not too soft either)
after re-assembling (partially) the phone came on for about 10 minutes but the problem started happening again so i disassembled it once more.
THE FOLLOWING MAY NOT BE AN ACTUAL FIX (I PROBABLY JUST GOT LUCKY)
4. (looking from above) the power button is square (half is white and the other half is yellow).......i used a razor blade and gently separated the two halves....not completely separated, just a tiny bit. completely separating the white from the yellow would destroy it.
5. gave it a few taps again and now the phone is working fine.
I hope this helps someone who is unable to return their phone to Google.
I tried to explain what I did as clearly as possible. I will be happy to answer any questions asked.
Same problem
Hey Guys. Same problem here. I was sending a whatsapp message and boom. OFF. I tried to connect it to power but it turns on for a few second, shows google logo and the unlocked bootloader and turns off and again and again..it was at 52% battery charge....I'm unlocked, rooted and on cm11. Reading here, i have understand that it's a hardware issue, and i've bought it since 8 months, so can I RMA it? I'm in Italy and i've bought it from play store..

What did you finally do? I have the same problem.
Workaround to keep your data
I had the same problem already twice. It appears that the cache partitions on the phone is corrupted and therefore Android won't boot. As long as you have an unlocked bootloader you can bring your phone back to life without loosing your personal files. If your bootloader is locked, you have to unlock it first( see here http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/guide-nexus-5-how-to-unlock-bootloader-t2507905). This is how it worked for me:
Connect your phone to the PC and bring it into fastboot mode
Download the Factory Android image from https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
extract the images from the zip
run "fastboot flash cache cache.img"
restart phone
Done
I hope this can be of help.

You have a fauilty or a stucked power key.
If it is just stucked then you can unstuck it by abusing the power key or taking the phone apart.
If it is fauilty then you have to claim your warranty.
If you disassemble the phone you will void your warranty

A few days back, she had got the power button fixed because the power button response had become intermittent and the phone was rebooting randomly. She had taken the phone to a LG service center first, but they told her that changing the button or trying to fix it might damage the board and told her to change the board altogether. So we took it to a local repair guy who fixed it and the phone was working fine till yesterday when it shutdown all of a sudden and then the rest is history.
Note: The phone is not under warranty as the phone was bought from Dubai and we stay in India. No international warranty.

Yeah the repair guy you dealt with must have fixed the button short-term but in doing so inadvertently caused it to short out. Meaning it needs to go back to a repair shop (better one) and cross your fingers that it didn't short out more important components

Did you get it fixed? I have the same issue and I've tried many ways to bring it back to life. My last step will be taking it to the tech support, because I live in Brazil, and I'm pretty sure they will charge me expensively as hell.

Guys my gf's Nexus 5 shutdown today and just refuses to boot up. It doesn't do anything with any of the keys pressed in any of the combinations that are defined. But once it is plugged in to the charger or USB, the google logo pops up and the phone keeps on rebooting to that logo. Had my Nexus 5 for about a few month now, and have loved it till this morning, it decided to just shut off (full battery too) and i tried to turn it on and it is now just constantly starting up to the "Google" splash screen then shutting off.
Sometimes it gets to the the 4 color circles then shuts off.
I want to enter into recovery mode, but I have no time to click recovery mode as it reboots frequently
One thing i noticed when it did boot up was the power button seems to be extremely sensitive and volatile
I had this same problem.. It constantly rebooted and wouldn't let me get into recovery.. Every time I plugged in the charger it would reboot also. You have to let the battery completely drain.. I gave it a couple weeks.. then tried it again and it worked.
Found a solution
Well same thing started to happening with me yesterday after installing android L's developers' preview in my nexus 5. It worked well for first 4-5 hours but then after terminating a phone call when I put it back to my pocket problem started. I searched many forums for solution then I decided to re-install from image. I connected my phone to My PC (Which had driver installed & fastBoot setup) dramatically my phone started working well. And I detached my phone from PC. So I thought it might solved because after supplying charging. But after 3-4 hours it started again so I directly plugged in to electric socket but it kept on rebooting. Then I turned on my PC and attached my nexus 5 with it. Again it started dramatically.
Still I don't know the exact reason behind it. But good new is my phone is still working since last 16 hours... But I took care of not to launch some apps listed risky for developer's preview. So I thing some incompatible app launch may be a reason... but still its only "may be"

If it happens again try what I just answered and let us know if it worked for you? So we can come to know if solution was nexus 5 specific or android L specific. Also mention the OS version, please.

Thanks. I restored it to the original nexus 5 build - but nothing seems to fix the problem. will reach out to service center.
Hello,
Ive tried to look for a similar situation in other thread but each case is different so i open a new one.
This morning, when i took my idol 3 the screen did not switch off when pressing power button. I thought it was battery but when i plugged charger, nothing happened except the led is on continuously. I kept power button pressed for 10 seconds. The phone vibrates shortly but still a black screen, no sound and no reaction from the touch panel. Power+vol+ did not led me to my twrp recovery. What can i do now to get it work again? The phone is rooted with Rom Eu 4.2 from murigny64 and it is the first time i encounter this issu. Thanks in advance for helping me
Tonight i disconnected the battery for about 30min then connect it again. Then i tried to start in recovery: Just a vibration but no display and no sound. I unplugged/plugged the battery again and try to start. Same problem. What the hell could happen? Maybe a deffective hardware
Insist on boot ( normal or in to recovery with vol + and power).
That is a hardware brick.
Happened to me to some times, insist, it will unbrick

Hopelessly i tried to restart several times before you post your message. But im gonna try again.
I charged the phone all the night but nothing better and the phone is not detected on pc so no adb action possible.
Maybe the battery is dead...

Can be, can be to... To bad if is battery.
But still trying to boot, is very difficult to.
.
thank you for advise but it's still not working. I spend about 30 minutes trying different combination of button: power pressed until it vibrate, power+vol up, power+vol down, power+vol up & down, discontinuous press of power with charger and no charger....and so on. Its a complete failure.
If it is the battery, there was no sign of weakness before (short life, random shutoff, ....) . It happen suddenly: I lock my screen before sleeping and the next morning no way to switch it on again.
I thought I would avoid problems for long with a twrp recovery, a backup and adb tools on my pc.....but for hardware issues its useless.
How can I be sure it is battery before purchasing another one ?

If it was the screen the touch panel would work and i could sense vibration when typing the pin code no?
The led bright continuously when i plug instead of flashing slowly as it used to do when charging. That why i think its battery.
...and when i start in recovery the phone is not detected on my pc
That's hardware brick. Don't give up, try to boot, normally or in recovery, keep trying it will boot.
Have you tried to open the phone and disconnect battery? Custom ROMs made me similar issue a few times.

Therefore the back can be dismantle and we can access battery and that s what i did.
Yes i disconnected it for several hours and pluged it again but it gave me the same result. And now it doesnt vibrate anymore when i keep the power button pressed a while.
I purchased a battery on internet and im waiting for delivery to test if im right or not. Il feedback about the test.
Anyway its nice from you to look for any solution. Thanks

I guess you did everything properly, so just one thing: at first time when I did this, I choosed the wrong cable (which didn't 'reset' the phone), so I hope you pulled both out.

I think i choose the good connection: This is the one over the battery with 6 wires: 2 red, 2 white and 1 black (see picture attached). I just left it with a small screwdriver to disconnect.

Yep, that's it
Hello,
I received the new battery today.
So i unpacked it, i unplugged the old one and plugged the new one ...and guess what happened......the same bevahiour as with the old battery: when i press the button power, it vibrate but it doesnt start neither in recovery nor in normal mode.
I just precise that the new battery is charged at 50%........:crying:
So the problem is not the battery but it was the only thing i could test by myself before sending the phone to alcatel for repair.
Im still wondering what could happen to my idol 3: It had been woking perfectly for months and one morning with no warning, it refuse to switch on. Ok sorry for annoying us and hope it wont happen with yours.
I hope alacatel will apply the guarantee although the phone is rooted and bootloader unlocked....because its a hardware issue i think.
Hello,
Just to conclude. The phone got back from repair after 10 days. They have changed motherboard, battery and also the back that was damaged. Its a brand new phone .
So I was trying to make a backup with the latest twrp and I got this error code: createTarFork() process ended with ERROR=255.
I figured, to hell with it I'll reboot. Twrp asked if I wanted to install the twrp app, I said no. Screen goes back, never to turn on again. No button combo holding for any length of time helps. Bummer, right? I was running DU at the time.
Now I'm worried about the RMA, I hope they don't deny me after they get it back into the warehouse.

Does anything happen when you plug the phone into the wall or into the PC?
Have you tried just holding down power for a while?
are you on beta hardware. i noticed today my phone was unresponsive installing twrp it would go black and disconnect from pc. what i had to do to get it to turn back on since it stayed lik that even holding the power button for a while was just hold the volume key and power for a couple min down and power if that dont work try volume up and power just random pushes to get the phone it will go to some debugging screen then just holding buttons till it restarts

I've tried every button combo. Plugged it in to wall overnight and computer. No response. Makes me paranoid about twrp for pixel because I was rebooting from there, but then again it doesn't seem to be a big problem in the community

I thought I was in trouble a couple times. I had to hold volume down and power button for a long time. Finger started to go to sleep

I also had the same situation go on as well. I'm not sure what's is happening but when I boot TWRP the thing just becomes unresponsive and a black screen. I had to hold the buttons for nearly 30 seconds before it worked. Pixel isn't a friendly device to mod. :-/

That's bizarre! I'll try when I get home. I wonder what's causing this. Did it ever happen again to you? And were you using twrp when it happened?

Yes I was using twrp, I was flashing test build. But it put me into a loop. U got a black screen, and if your computer won't even recognize it , you may be out of luck. I have been using rc2 I know it's not great for restoring backups, but it works good for everything else
That is so strange. I have never come across this issue before. Unfortunately, if you can't seem to get your PC to recognize the device, I don't think there's anything you can do. I guess we will have to be wary about using TWRP. I haven't had any weird issues myself with TWRP but I know others have. Here's hoping google will honor your warranty. I think they will, I don't think see them spending the time to look into what caused your phone to die so I think you'll be able to get a replacement without much hassle.
If you wouldn't mind, please keep us updated.
