i installed the Google Contacts, able to run at first. However after once launch the LG Contacts /Phone app, the Google contacts unable launch anymore, it will auto switch to LG Contacts itself and icon is disappeared from applist.
my workaround is freeze the LG Contacts and install other 3rd party dialers ( i'm using TrueDIaler).
i need Google Contacts to search contacts in my company domain which is using Google. i just unable to get it setup using Exchange under LG Contacts for directory searching.
if anyone have better workaround to get Google Dialer and Contacts to work will be great.

finally got another better workaround by follow this method at G4 forum. http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/themes-apps/google-dialer-g4-root-recovery-t3197351.
it does not work out at first because no Dialer icon in applist. extra step i took is launch the "Google Dialer/Phone" activity, by create shortcut with securesetting.
take note need keep LG Phone dont' disable it else Dialer won't work, but LG Contacts can be disabled. Yeah i got Google Contacts back working again.

Does anyone have a backup of the lg h950 stock 5.1.1 dialer apk from the system folder?
I want to revert back to stock from the Google dialer (too many drawbacks)
Thanks

Google dialer shouldn't replace the LG phone.apk, you deleted it?

I thought the /priv-app/Dialer was where the LG phone apk was stored as well. (do you have a original of that file?)
How do you restore the LG phone dialer then?

hi, the LG phone apk is actually /system/priv-app/LGContacts.apk
i freeze the "LG Contacts", not the LG Phone using Titanium Backup, with this LG Phone icon is disappeared from app drawer. unfreeze it will switch back to LG phone.

Ah ok, I can't seem to get it to restore automatically. Can you send me a backup of that directory from 5.1.1?

What file manager are you using to move the apk? Root File Manager is not working for me. It says it has copied the apk, but then I can't see it in Root File Manager.

I followed this guide and it is too vague.
1. I copied the Dialer folder to root/system/priv-app
2. Changed permissions to folder and file to 0644
3. Rebooted
4. No icon
Can you elaborate on setting up the shortcut please?
Also where did you get Google Contacts from? Not in the Play store.

Hi, as I mentioned above there is no icon created. You need use another app 'securesettings' or other equivalent to link 'Google Dialer activity'.
To link the activity:
1. Create widget from home screen
2. Select securesettings
3. Launch activity
4. Select app 'Google dialer'
5. Select the first activity start with 'phone'
6. Save the activity created assign with a nice icon.
7.launch the created widget, bingo!.
Google contacts can be downloaded from apkmirror.
Hope this clear to help in your setup.

Thanks that did it. Do I have to find a google contacts apk to install?
Found the apk on apk mirror.
So is it normal for the lg phone app to be the only option on incoming calls?

Google Hangout APK

Guys,
So there are many whose aren't able to download Google Hangout apk / not able to update to the same.
Please download the Rar file & Extract it. Just Install it as normal APK.
So, you aren't able to install it as Normal APK..?? Not a problem.
Follow the Process:
1) If you are rooted then just go to /system/app/ --- Rename talk.apk to Talk.1
2) Remove permissions from RW-R--R--
3) Install the Hangout Apk
It will install automatically.:highfive:
Or
If You aren't rooted, Just go to setting -> Applications -> All -> Talk.apk -> Disable it.
Install the Hangout APK normally.
Now, open it. Select your Country -> Give your phone number -> Verify it.
Tada... You have Hangout for your mobile.
If want to go back to Gtalk, Click here to download
Note: I have searched in XDA, there is no thread same as Hangout. Enjoy.
Nice buddy
Works nice

Yes but someone (like me) could find this thread after installing Hangouts in other ways - without backup.
In my case... I used Titanium Backup... but I forgot to raise the backup limit number... So one Hangouts backup overwrote the previous Talk backup.
:crying:
Hangouts actually installed on top of Talk on my phone when I sideloaded. No disabling or replacing of system app.

Hope this helps

Another way: Just uninstall Talk app in Titanium backup and go to play store and install the hangouts app.
On play store i see 1.0.0.2 version.... Here is 1.0.0.1 version why?
There is already a thread for this app. Please use that to continue this discussion

Facebook Contact Sync for Lollipop AOSP/CM12/CM12.1 ROMs

UPDATE 29/03: Added version for Lollipop 5.1 (tested on CM12.1/AOSP ROMs).
UPDATE: Fixed zip file.
I have compiled a modified Lollipop ContactsProvider to allow the Facebook app to sync contacts on CM12/AOSP based ROMs.
To install:
Download the attached recovery flashable zip and copy it to your phone.
Clear data for the Facebook app and Contacts Storage (Apps > All). VERY IMPORTANT.
Reboot into recovery and flash the zip file.
When you log back into the Facebook app you may see the option to enable contact sync, if not it will appear at the bottom of the App Settings screen.
If you find your contacts are not appearing after enabling in the FB app, do the following:
Open a command prompt
adb shell
su
sqlite3 /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/contacts2.db 'ALTER TABLE raw_contacts ADD COLUMN is_restricted VARCHAR';
try the previous step a second time and if it was successful you will be told it already exists.
Reboot
This has been tested and works perfectly on a Galaxy S5 and HTC One M7 with both CM12 and AOSP based ROMs, but I would advise as always making a backup of things before flashing. I take no responsibility for any brickage that may occur.
Thanks, it's working (from the App Settings screen)!

I cracked it!
I managed to mod the contactsprovider.apk from cm12 (5.1.1). You'll have to copy it over to system/Contacts Provider and change permissions to 644. Then reboot.
You might also have to do that extra thing in the first post in this thread (making a new column), but you can do that in Terminal Emulator from the Play Store.

What I did was:
-Uncheck Google Contacts sync
-Remove Facebook account
-Clear Data for Contacts Storage
-Copy ContactsProvider.apk to system/priv-app/ContactsProvider
-Reboot
-Add table with Terminal Emulator (after clearing data again, if necessary due to errors on boot)
-Re-check Google Contacts sync
-Login to Facebook
-Go to app settings
-Scroll down to Sync Contacts
-Choose either Sync All or Existing
I usually just sync all.

After clearing my data I have to restart before assistant starts working.
Didn't work.
I've followed all the steps above.
1. I've mounted the system folder as R/W
2. I've copied velvet.apk to the directory, and gave it rw- r-- r-- permissions.
3. I've opened the build.prop file, edited it to add the two lines.
4. Opened the settings, went to the google app, and cleared cache, went into the manage space and cleared all data.
5. Restarted my device.
6. Long pressed the home button, and the google-on-tap screen comes up.
I've re-checked everything I've done. All the permissions are set and the build.prop is still modified. Can you please help?
Edit: I've downloaded the apk in the hope that it was corrupted the first time. I think it was. I've got the assistant running now. Thank you!
However, everytime I say "Ok, Google" it takes me to the screen where I start training my voice model. Is this the issue for everyone? Or is it just me? I've looked around and a few people are reporting the same thing. I was wondering if there was a fix for this?
@linkinscreamer and others... you might try ChopAssistant from the Play Store. It bypasses the prompt to retrain the voice. It worked for me

If You Don't Have A Folder Called Velvet Inside /system/priv-app/ that means You Don't Have the Google app. If You Don't Have the Google app, simply create a new folder under /system/priv-app named Exactly as 'Velvet' and follow the steps.:good:

Making Gmail & Google Contacts work on rooted HD 10 2017

Hey guys,
If this is a duplicate please let me know, but I personally didn't find any information here before I tried a few methods to make these work.
Make Gmail Work
Convert the following apps to system apps:
Gmail
Google Play Services
Google Services Framework
Make Google Contacts Work
Disable Amazon's default contact app.
Install Google Contacts and convert it to system apps.
Download Google Contacts Sync (remember to download version 5.x for api level 22), install, and make it system.
Wipe app cache / data if needed.
Both apps mostly works, Gmail still crashes occasionally, but WAY better than before and is now usable. Edit: Gmail failed after rebooting and did not work again after that short, sweet, few minutes of working... But Contacts work pretty well.
Going through logs, looks like it's Amazon's download manager causing the crash. If anyone knows where to find a replaceable download manager let me know! Google's only supports 7.1 and up.
Good catch! Have you tried apkmirror? What's the namw of the Google's downloadmanager? I have older lg tablet(android 5.1.1) , maybe that one will work.
Nevemind, I've found it and extracted. Let me just find some file host.

Your Google Downloader doesn't work. Couldn't get the apk to install, even if I put it in the system folder manually.
Anyway, in the process I accidentally deleted the .odex file for the original download manager. If you or someone else could provide me theirs so I can fix this, I would really appreciate it. Can't download anything on the play store or amazon app store now.
@wilburblin
Have you tried oldies but goodies to get GAPPS going?

There is no reason this should not work ...

Make Google Contacts Work[/B][/U]
Disable Amazon's default contact app.
Install Google Contacts and convert it to system apps.
Download Google Contacts Sync (remember to download version 5.x for api level 22), install, and make it system.
[*]Wipe app cache / data if needed.

I've been running contacts for a few days now, converting to system and wiping cache isn't necessary, in my experience. I can't get gmail working stable for the life of me though. I read some discussions that said the reason why it fails is because it has a permission to auto download without a prompt (for attachments) and that Fire OS has a problem with that. I've tried running older versions of gmail, and I've rebuilt gmail with the download activity removed, tried converting gmail to system and to priv-app. No luck.
I got gmail working. It's a user app and I used appsettings module v1.15 for xposed to set orientation to force autorotate. I don't know why it worked, but it's survived many reboots now. I have all the google services installed and the Amazon email app is installed but I'm deep hibernation via rom toolbox. Hope this helps

Can you try sending yourself an email with an image and then try to open that image in gmail?
Gmail works fine for me on the Fire 10 2017 apart from crashing when opening images.

I tried to show the picture and it didn't crash. I tried the force autorotate method but failed for a few times. Then I chose not to show the picture automatically (&force autorotate) and it worked, at least for now.

Here's my experience: an embedded image is fine, an image as an attachment will crash it. i messed with this for a while, couldn't get it to work, and went back to 9folders email. It makes sense, since from what I read, the reason it crashes is because it doesn't get permissions to download attachments (because of a signature problem between gmail and download manager). I think someone already tried to replace the download manager with a google signed one and the result was a bootloop. I wonder if there is any way to give gmail root rights, so that it gets all of the permissions. Or to sign gmail with the same signature as our download manager.
