What have I bought? - Miscellaneous Android Development

I decided to invest in a cheap smartphone and purchased a 3GB P3000S (6752) as I wanted the 5.5" P7000 functionality but without the phablet size. It's currently on it's way from Singapore and due to be with me in the next 1-2 weeks.
Stupidly (!) I'd assumed this was a functioning smartphone that would be on a Lollipop upgrade path. I've just been over to the Elephone forum and it appears that this phone is already abandonware with a bunch of malfunctional features (compass/GPS issues, camera, battery life).
Is anyone in the UK using this phone and do you have anything good to say about it?!?

Elephone is abandon all its phones fast.
Dont expect much updates there. They push new smartphones so fast, their developers can't care about older ones. I know they announce lollipop for this phone but we shoudn't belive in such PR stuff.
Its very important to get all reviews, company release cycle, company update behavior etc before buy a phone blind.
Users also report the P3000S with 3GB Ram has only 1,3GB free on idle
1-2Weeks? Wow. Hongkong->Germany usually 3-4days non-express
I would take my money and ship the phone back. Looking for a better MTK, but don't expect much update wonders in the china phone world, at least this time.

I have the one with 2gb of RAM and I'm very happy with it. I can use it 2 full days not need to carry charger or spare battery. It works fast and stable , screen is good enough, camera is very good /although both are not top of the tops/. GPS is very good, and the wi-fi too. The phone does not overheat at heavy load. My compass is working. I can live without Lolipop for this price and functionality.

very happy with itself. especially for price.
get couple days battery using greenify and ds battery saver. no issues with gps/wifi/4g

[Q] Any phones coming out soon that are worth waiting for?

Hello everyone,
I currently have a Nexus 4 on t-mobile that I have had for 2 years now I believe, and I am looking to get a new phone. (Not stuck in a contract currently, so if it is a really good phone, I can switch companies) I was thinking of getting the S5, but was trying to look up or find out more info on any other new phones that may be worth it. I do like big specs (processor, ram, etc) but at the same time, what good is all that if I can only actually use the phone for an hour or two and then it is dead? Simply leaving my phone on my desk at work during the day, it is already at half or less by the time I am ready to go home. Heaven forbid I check some sites while in the bathroom or something.
Specs are nice but not quite so important I guess at the expense of usability. I also have a gear live, and use it for various things, but mostly like it for the heart rate monitor for running, so any phones that can help utilize that more in any way would be nice as well.

The LG Gflex has incredible battery life (easily 1 day with high usage) but most people tend to love or hate the phone, The galaxy note 4 has an amazing screen but ive not had chance to use one long enough to judge the battery, huawei ascend mate is also known to have great battery life but it also has a 720p display as does the Gflex.

Just a hint, you may want to wait a little bit.
As we all know Samsung is losing ground fast to new giants like Xiaomi and others, Samsung just revealed it's plans for the next quarter it may be a good thing for you because they are about to drop some high-end models to put more effort into Tizen and low cost units to compete with China new giants and noticeably android ONE program.

[Help] Looking to switch phones

So, i'm actually using an ancient Galaxy SII and i'm looking to switch to the Moto G 3rd generation. I want to know honest opinions of Moto G owners to check if it fulfils my needs or if I need to keep saving money to buy another phone..
1) How is the performance? Are there much hiccups/lags/slow downs? How the SD410 + Adreno 306 do for gaming (Clash of Clans, Candy Crush..)? Does it heat up much? My SGS2 gets insanely hot when playing Clash of Clans, doing long time web browsing or long time phone calls... :crying:
2) For those who own the 2GB version, how is the multitasking? Is it worth the extra money?
3) How is the battery on both 4G and WiFi? I tried looking on the battery thread but got some discrepancy on the screenshots. I actually get 1h SOT on this 5 yo phone, have to charge it about 3 times a day, so anything above 3h is fine!
4) Are there any major bugs on the software? I found some threads but these bugs seems to be particular to the thread owners, I haven't found (yet) any wide spread bug.
5)I'm a bit worried about the new LCD panel since it's TFT. What do you guys think about it?
6) Would you recommend the phone? In a scale of 1 to 10 (considering the price, obviously), how much would you rate it?

1) I play Candy Crush, Riptide, Pokemon Shuffle, and other games all the time, the Moto G gets a little warm, but nothing like my Nexus 4 or previous phones... the performance is acceptable to good, but not excellent. Kind of like having a middle of the road graphics card in your PC, it does the job but won't impress anyone.
2) This is a personal preference thing, but I purchased and got the 2GB version, I switch apps around all the time and have zero issues with apps closing... Aside from the 2GB you also get 16GB of storage, which is almost essential especially if you are going to be installing some games. 1GB/8GB just won't cut it for more than average phone use, gaming would not be impossible but could be difficult.
3) I get good to great battery life... I average 4 hours of SOT on LTE in outdoor usage playing Ingress so the GPS is going all the time, screen near full brightness, graphics engine working hard, and 6 hours of SOT with average usage on WiFi. I average 4.5-5.0 hours of SOT per charge when needed, but at the end of an average day I still have 30% battery remaining.
4) If there are any major bugs, or even annoying minor ones, I have yet to see them. I am still stock/unrooted but using Nova Launcher Prime. This is one of the few phones I have had in a very long time where I do not have the urge to unlock, root, and ROM it... yet.
4a) Not really a bug(s), but two caveats on this one, the phone does not have a gyroscope... but uses 2 accelerometers instead, this can cause some directional issues in apps like Ingress or Waze (not Maps or Scout), the app thinks you are always pointing north. Once you realize it you just deal with it or switch to other apps. The other is that it does not have NFC, which is probably not a big deal unless you plan on using Android Pay or hacking amiibo.
5) The display is very nice, crisp and easily viewable from a wide angle... I have zero complaints on the display, it is 10x better than the display on old Nexus 4.
6) I would give it an 8.5, and recommend this phone for the average to mild Android enthusiast... It is basically stock Android with a couple add ins, and is about as close to a Nexus device as you get at half the price. If you are a hard core ROM flasher, enthusiast, or developer, prefer a larger/higher resolution screen, need NFC or a Gyroscope, this may not be the phone for you.
I had an SGS2 Skyrocket for a while, it was a decent phone but the battery life was horrid, since then I have moved onto several phones... step into 2015, you will be so glad you did, not having to look for a charger every place you go is liberating!
Not trying to sway you as I love my Moto G and would not give it up, but some alternatives to consider: Asus Zenfone 2, Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3, and Huawei Ascend Mate 2. My son got the Ascend Mate 2, the battery life is amazing... we talk about 4-6 hours SOT, he gets more like 12-15 hours of SOT, or not charging for several days, I have actually seen him go from Monday morning until Friday without charging. The Zenphone and Idol a little more feature rich and larger, they have gyroscope/NFC and some of the more premium features the Moto G is missing, at a price, my friend got two Zenphone 2 2GB/16GB models and it works well although he is hardly a hardcore user. Just some stuff to consider... Good luck.

Yeah.. I wake up and unplug the phone at around 5am to go to College, and when I arrive there, i'm already at ~60%. When I play CoC, the phone get's abnormaly hot (even tho it's undervolted) and the battery drain is absurd, like 2% a minute. And to make it worse, my original charger broke and I have to charge it trough a USB Port on my notebook, so basically the phone stays charging half of the day, and the other half i'm using it..
I live in Brazil, so it's extremelly hard to find Huawei, Oppo, Alcatel, etc. around here. What happens is people import the phone for it's regular price, and sell it for twice or even more. The OnePlus Two for example, it's not selling for south america, so people travel and buy or import it (dunno how) for it's regular price, ~390USD, and sell it here for around 1000USD. Same thing goes for all brands that doesn't sell here, like HTC. When phones are sold here by their own companies, the oposite happens, people import phones to sell them at a lower price compared to the company price tag. The Apple Iphone is a great example. Everything here is way more expensive compared to almost every other country in the world, due to our heavy amount of taxes.
I researched a bit the ZenFone 2, but after seeing some reviews, I didn't like at all their user interface, it's way too modified for my taste.. remembers me the old TouchWiz (clunky with too many features I won't use). And since It uses Intel, i'm afraid of a future lack of developers for custom Roms and Kernels.
I had a Sony Xperia S and NEVER used NFC. The gyroscope isn't a deal breaker for me.

As others have said, get a 16 GB G and forget about all of the competition. Like too many android phones, those are just hulking brutes with no brain (no optimisation/support, ugly-as-f**k skins, bloatware everywhere, unimpressive design)

Hi guys, so im thinking to buy Honor 6 , because i like alot that design, but you guys tell me is it worth buying it ? (even i hate that huawei UI) if not ? then what you recomand me to buy (something that cost same like Honor 6 ) ?

Please don't throw your money away! The phone is a whole marketing lie. The display starts to get red and blue spots in a couple of months till the whole display got a line in the size of a matchstick (till now). The display doesn't react like it should when you put the power connector into it in the time of a half year to year and ghost pushes. Huawei can't handle to update the operating system (they had a year old Android on it when it came out, after a year an already 2 years old Android Update came out and now it got a half year old Android version on it, while Android 6 came out on 5. October). It produces microstutters when you are browsing and playing games, because they fkd up the energy saving and performance mode to degrade the phone into a whole energy saving phone.
I had a modded Samsung s2 before and it had the same performance in games, all was fluid, but it had no microstutters and wasnt stuttering and ghost pushing when i had it connect with the power connector. If you want to see something in the daylight you have to put the highest brightness on and even then it's not perfect.
The only difference between the s2 and the h6 was the display wasn't as big as the Honor 6 plus updates came out immediately on Samsung.
Please don't throw your money away. The phone was hyped too much. In real it's a faulty cheap device. I'll never do the failure again.

I still love my Honor 6... and don't have any of the issues reported.
But if was today, I'd probably get a One Plus X.

i love my honor 6 dual sim with lte and also have no issues...I would buy it again, especially for the price of 239 USD....

Do you have some links, threads on the forums etc. to put more credibility to your claims? I tried to look for it, but it doesn't seem like these issues are as well known as you say...

This issues are definitely made up. Or caused by bad treatment of the phone. I can assure you that none of the mentioned above happens.
As for the system updates, it is a downside that updates come too slow, but if you are not of those people who flash new roms every day, it shouldn't really bother you.

I'd say the terrible WiFi performance (WiFi is unusable if you're streaming audio to a Bluetooth device) and EMUI 3.1 being pretty broken (Chrome tabs are nowhere to be found, Smart Lock doesn't work properly, and many many useful features of 5.1 are hidden or plain absent) are dealbreakers for me.
Add to this the fact that the power button on mine stopped working. The Honorvipservice.co.uk website doesn't work, and tells you to call the service centre. Called the centre and they said to call Huawei. Called Huawei and the booked it in over the phone. Allegedly a replacement phone will come tomorrow, but to be honest I think I'm just going to sell it and get a Motorola so I can get stock Android 5.1.
PS should add that I'm back on my old Moto G first generation (non 4G) and I'm actually much preferring the experience to that of the Honor 6 Plus - even with the slower operation and smaller screen. Android just works properly - at least with the minimum apps installed.

No problems with this phone. EMUI 3.1 works like a charm (no issues with chrome tabs) haven't done both bluetooth streaming with wifi but the wifi itself is stable and quick enough.

I bought my Honor 6 for £80 as a joke phone as I never tried an Huawei and did not want to spend a lot of money on it and boy am I impressed. Aside from development, the phone is really quick and the processor (which is basically an Exynos CPU, which are the best imo) is good and coupled with 3GB RAM means its definitely high end material. Just put on MIUI 7 on the phone and you are set. Lovely phone but I don't use it much as I have loads of phones haha. At the price range its in its great. I would not spend more on a Huawei (like the 6P) than the Honor 6.

Yeah, the phone is all good for me. If you have the patience to wait for software updates, its a fine phone.

Are you sure? There was a change in how Chrome handles tabs (not EMUI related) and you might've missed that. Now each tab is treated like a different application - you manage tabs in Recent Apps (the square button). Works for me.
The other stuff mentioned here isn't too important for me to be honest, but I understand your concerns. I definitely have the patience for updates, coming from a phone that had Android 4.1 (and quite usable 4.4 custom rom) and 0,7GB of RAM, Honor 6 is a massive upgrade for me. kackalarm's issues seem faulty model related at best, and blatant lies at worst. I'm pretty objective towards the fact that my phone might have some faults in the future, but it's hard to believe stuff like that without any proof...
For its price, it's not bad at all. Screen is nice, and not too big (5" is the absolute maximum for the size of my pocket). It looks better than most phones in this price range, has 3GB RAM which should be future-proof enough. There's some ROM development, even if we're still waiting for any kernel sources newer than KitKat, I can wait. (Although there are definitely safer bets if you care about ROM development, there is a chance Huawei won't care about it anymore) I'm satisfied with EMUI and that's got to be the first time I even considered using stock, unrooted software on a phone. (To be fair though, my previous phones were slow and had no recent updates, so using ROMs was necessary for good Android experience)

Yeah, I updated using the file on the Honor site. The phone told me about the tabs but no sign of them when I hit the square button. My Moto G is on 5.1 and they work fine there.
The Wifi/Bluetooth thing is the biggest problem with the device for me though.

When you need more "credebilities" then look into Amazon reviews of the Honor 6. It's not a "faulty sunday model" or whatever, the Honor 6 itself is faulty. How can it be that so many same smartphones have the same failures? You can't see these failures in a quality check, if they happen in a random time. For one it's after a few weeks, for the other one it's after a year or more, but it definitely will happen some day. Similar problems are on smartphones like Sony Z1 and Samsung Galaxy 1 Plus for example (touchscreen problem, ghost touch while connected to power connector). Enough "credebility on my claims"?
@browser problems
I've got problems on my Honor 6 with videos often, when I try to watch a video over one of the browsers (Chrome, Firefox). First everything works like a charm and after 2 minutes or whatever the tab is broken and shows no video anymore. That happens on every browser. I have to reload the whole browser or open the video in a new tab then. Apps like Amazon Video or Youtube work like a charm.

I won't suggest you any cheap smartphone, because you ever have a downside on that. You have to buy what you feel is good for you and if a cheap phone is good for you it is good for you. I suggest you to go into a smartphone shop and test every actual smartphone you can offer for nearly the same price, like Samsung Galaxy S5 Neo and stuff. As long as you are happy it's good. I only hope that you don't buy a Honor 6 and end up with the same problems some day. I personally won't suggest cheap and old smartphones and the Honor 6 was more an emergency buy than a well conceived buy, because I can buy the smartphones, where you clearly feel and see a difference between both worlds.

If you are an Indian User: Yes, but you must know this is an end of life model....
If you are an European User: No
Since Lollipop, Indian model of H60-L04 (Honor 6) have 3 updates.
Beta selection for Marshmallow just started.
European Model: 0 updates since Lollipop (this also an H60-L04). And of course security flaws are'nt fixed !
No beta at this moment for the H60-L04, and no one knows when ....

From 12 mounts I have Honor 6 H60-L12. Bought from Aliexpress (China to Europe) (official china rom 5.1.1 manual applied, Battery 3 days regular use)
Good thinks:
No bad issue, work stable in any conditions.
EMUI 3.1 have similar to iphone interface for me it is really easy to jump between SMS Contacts Notes. I like it.
- Individual restriction to any installed app. When lock phone it stop app not permitted to work.
- Sensitive GPS, two independent SIM TX, IR with many many models for TVs DVDs STBs Air conditioners, built in Camera translation, have MHL, OTG.
Features not implemented:
- Double tap to start screen
- No Miracast only DLNA
- Some issue with connection to Kenwood car audio. Play music from speaker not from amplifier. Still try to clear it.
Low in plastic body - to soft - in back pocket of jeans it start to have curve shape.
Antutu (last) 51 387 pionts. HiSilicon Kirin 920 18 place CPU model. Very stable work.

material are not premium, its plastic, but the phone is nice looking
fast and stable, i would prefer a clean android rom, but emui isnt bad at all

The ultimate budget friendly near stock android phone.

Welcome to my review, well you may be asking yourselves, "Isn't there already a budget phone like the moto g?" Yes, there is. But today, I'll be talking about a small ZTE phone that would most likely suit your needs. Well to start, I'll be reviewing the ZTE Whirl 2.
Battery Life/ SoT(Screen on Time)
If I'm using it with heavy usage ,(like social media and light gaming)
I get around 3-4 Hours of SoT, yeah yeah, only 4 hours but that's good for a less than $50 phone.
Price
Usually $10 at a Dollar General.
Speed and Smoothness of UI/UX
It's pretty fast if you ask me. It's on Android 4.3 Jellybean and still performs like a mid range phone with normal/moderate usage.
Downsides
Only about 1GB of space, but still expandable through an SD Card.
It can only be temporarily rooted with a PC.
It's on 4.3 Jellybean. :/
Conclusion
If you want a phone on the cheap, but still want performance and good battery life and or SoT, you should get this phone. Even though it's on an old version of Android.
I recommend this phone for the people who want to experiment with things and to develop software as well if you find a way to permanently root it.

Is it still worth buying a S6 in 2017 ?

So I want to get a new phone, and I was thinking of getting the S6 by the way my budget looks like at the moment since I am thinking a new phone in the price range I have in mine won't offer anything up to that. I want to mention that I am not a heavy user, but I do want a phone with a good camera, audio and display quality.
Also I won't look at buying a new one, but a second hand one.

The S6 is really a good device and have indeed a good camera, audio and display quality but the bad point is battery life.
With 2550mah I can get only 1 full day with 3hours of screen on. I have changed my battery since a few month now.
Getting a second hand S6 will expose you to the risk of getting even worst battery life.

Only problem is battery...
Imho phone without 3k+ mah battery isnt enough no matter heavy user or not...
All the rest s6 is more the enough

Like mentioned above, you'll probably have to replace the battery if it's a second hand though

It is still a very, very good phone but you may have to invest in a external battery if you are away from a mains power source for quite a while

My price range is up to 300 euros/dollars.

If you like to put AOSP custom roms on your phone, stay away from the S6. It is on it's way, but from from being completely stable.

I am not really into meddling with my phone with different ROMs, usually I am comfortable with the phones I buy and their ROMs

If that is the case, it's a great phone! The Exynos 7420 is plenty fast, as it was truly ahead of its time. Battery life is decent. Screen is great.

for the given price and the amount of roms available not at all(and battery is like ****)... i made a foolish decision by buying this phone in 2016 when one plus 3 was available at a cheaper price... don't but this phone now.

I think if you can pick up an s6 for between 200-250 pounds, that's a good deal. It has a decent soc, screen and camera, yes battery could be better but that comes down to your usage and at some point depending on how old the handset is you might want to have the battery replaced. If you really value battery life then there are probably better devices but you will give up screen/cpu/ camera quality.

this year a lot middle range phones comes wit sd625 chip, which has +- performance like s6 Exynos. new sd 625 brand phones (if not Chinese brands) are expensive or same price like s6, but without super camera or screen like s6, wireless charger and etc. One bad thing with s6 - battery. I better buy 2 year old new s6 than mid class than mid class this year phone.

You can go for the S6 then !
You may have to replace the battery or buy a powerbank which is QC 2.0 compatible for best charging speed.
Like it has been said above, mid range phones will fail in the camera part and in the material used to build the device.
The only good point would be that mid range 2017 will get longer support than the S6 which is almost 2 years old now.
Anyway, Samsung updated the S6 to Nougat which is a really good news and the experience is even better than it was before.
You can also enjoy pretty neat features that you won't find on other mid range phones like the wireless charging, the led notification (not present in mid range samsung) or again the amazing camera

S6 is still a very good device. The camera is still one of the bests, the processor is fast enough, the display is magnificent. The battery is the only big disadvantage.

my s6 is 2years old and im still using it now,very good camera,very good display,still fast and smooth only downsidr is battery so i have a powerkbank when im outside

Just make sure the device has had the battery replaced as the original one will have degraded quite a bit in the last two years.

you better buy oneplus because even if you buy s8 its not worht it because you dont get support so wait for the one plus 5 with 8 gb ram, dual camera, fingerprint on the back, 5.5 inch amoled qhd display, oneplus logo with backlight you can use it as home button, and snapdragon 835 clocked at 2.45.
and its gonna kick the s8 of its thrones

I own a Galaxy S6, and I have to say, it's an amazing phone camera/performance/display wise. The downside is the battery, but in my daily use, that only happens when I'm on 3G/4G data as it really drains the battery out so that's why I bought a 10000mah portable charger/power bank and now my phone's battery life doesn't bother me that much anymore. But if you're not into the habit of carrying a portable charger around, well, that will be a problem.

If I had the opportunity I would definitely buy S8 or S8+. It is great if you are coming from old model phone also.

I bought S6 in january 2017 and I will pay for it around 240eur in total. Its on contract for 2years and costs Me 9,94eur a month. This purchase was spontan as My old phone (LG G3) contract was almost over and I kinda wanted a new phone. LG G3 still works ok and I willing to sell it. My toughts about tgis phone right now - somewhere in middle. Biggest issue I have is whit touchscreen. I don't know it is Me or what but response can be sometimes too sensitive and not responding compleately outside in winter. This is a major issue for Me as G3 was working as expected. I must use correction on S6 all the time. Screen - I haven't bin a fan of super amoleds and I'm still not. Colors are too saturated and from some angles it looks ****ty and cheep. On highest brigtness it looks also bad. Vibration - on hard surface it makes a lit of sound, and again - it makes phone look like entry-level. Battery - small, but I use phone onky up to 3h sot and I charge evety night. It isn't an issue for Me. Phone look and feel in hands - it is slippery, but I like alunium bezzels and thickness. Sound is good on speaker and headphones. Processing power is ok for Me. I'm not a heavy user as I mentioned. FB usage only in web broweser, so is Instagram. Camera is ok for phone, but don't expect dsrl quality for now on any phone. Heartrate sensor is a toy to play whit, but can be quite inaccurate, but I like Samsung Health app and GPS performance. GPS was a very noticable improvements over G3.
Overall for 240eur I'm not complaining, but if I would pay 300, 400 eur I would take it back. Biggest complain would be about touchscreen performance. If You spotted typo mistakes it because of that.
