Will it be upgradeable to Windows 10 and Android 5.1? Yes
Does it come with Google Play? Yes

Rumours:
So according to an unnamed source, the Chuwi Hi8 will be the very first tablet in the world to ship with Windows 10 and those of us who already have this tablet will be able to upgrade. This is a rumour, I don't know how true this is, being the first to ship with Windows 10, but it is a sign that Chuwi will probably put Windows 10 on the CHuwi Hi8. They also promised Lollipop as well.
If you have any questions about the Chuwi Hi8, the review, unboxing etc, post in below!

I think the website I linked above is the one, I just have the price listed wrongly. And yes, google play is preinstalled.
Can you post a screen from crystalmark showing the speed of emmc ?
I read in other site, the emmc of this tablet is slow and I wish to confirm.
Thanks and excuse me my bad english.
Ordered one last Thursday. As of today DHL still has not got it
Still says 'Shipment information received' which it has since last friday at 9:13am. Gearbest are telling me its been shipped and no reply from DHL about it yet.
Can't believe this, I paid for 'express' shipping too.
I have one.
Nice screen, nice quality. Android pretty fast, windows pretty slow because of slow emmc. Had a Vi8 before and it was faster, it doesnt stutter, it's just slow at opening apps etc. Metro Iexplore is super slow on mine almost unusable.
Hello.
Thank you for your nice review. I got my one yesterday, and everything is good except one thing;
I cannot turn off charging LED. I tried several Xposed modules which handles LEDs, but looks like the one with Chuwi hi8 is hardware-wired one.
Do you know anything about this?
My videos of this tablet pc (russian speach, but look picture - it's universal )))
And look testing of games on this tablet pc!

Spoke to dhl they said gearbest hasn't arranged collection yet. They also advised me gearbest setup a new tracking number on Wednesday evening., this time from Hong Kong instead of Singapore. As of right now they haven't arranged collection for that one either.
I would strongly advise against anyone buying these from gearbest right now. Something very underhanded is going on. They still insist it was shipped on Monday even when I presented them with the other tracking number. Telling me to wait another 3 to 7 days for it. I pad for 3 to 7 day shipping and it has been 7 days already and my package has not even left the warehouse.
I want to buy this, but I'm still waiting until the Roots and Custom Roms come in.

Don't worry too much about it. I've purchased from Gearbest multiple times and they have never disappointed me. Well, except for the fact that it takes pretty long. I never got scammed from them. They shouldn't cause you any problem as long as you just forget about the shipping date, because it WILL take a while.
So..... I'd like to make mine Windows only, free up some space.
Surely it won't be long before someone makes some tools/guide.... guys... guys?
After much arguing with gearbest they setup another waybill and got it to me in 2 days...
Very nice tablet for the price!
ibfragalot check out this post to remove android and make it windows only. its for the vi8 but have just done it on my hi8 and works fine.

Hi guys!!
Can anyone confirm me how much free space you got on Windows and how much free space you got on Android? Is it 16gb-16gb? I believe Windows needs way more space than Android. Why no 64gb option? That would be perfect!!
Thanks

Does anyone know how to remove the Windows partition? I cant get my head around how all the partitions work. And while there are lots of guides on how to remove Android I cant find any on how to remove Windows.
I also cant mount an sd card if it has a fat32 partition followed by a ext2 partition (for link2sd). Any ideas why?

This iPad look-alike is based on the Rockchip RK2808, which is also in the Ramos W7 and the Archos 7 Home Tablet. That means ROMs are largely compatible between the 3 devices, and any other RK2808 devices to come.
Where to talk about it
Slatedroid.com has a dedicated forum for the device.
I'll be there when mine ships, I hope. There are several ROM cooks already and I might know enough to contribute a bit.
ROMs
There are a couple of custom ROMs for this device you can flash already
Deving
The device has a .25 kernel, which is messed. Cupcake is supposed to have .27. We figured out how to repack the system so we can get some things working. /system is read-only right now after it's flashed on to the device.
We don't know how to modify the boot.img so we can't touch the ramdisk.
No idea about what's going to happen for kernel source, but we might as well try to poke ArchosFans to get it from Archos. The Archos 7 Home Tablet firmware actually runs on this tablet.
Drivers are only available for 32 bit Windows for the flashing tool.
adb works. adb has a root shell. So for all intents and purposes the device is rooted.
Identifying the device
Just because your device looks like a 7" or 8" iPad, it is not necessarily this Rockchip model. There are literally half a dozen models based on the inferior VIA WM8505 instead.
The VIA is fine when priced a lot lower than the the Rockchip one, but sellers have been posing their VIA tablets as Rockchip ones. It's just a mess out there. Just be careful.
The two postings on DealExtreme seem legitimate. One is expired already, but the key is the Rockchip software on the device. I didn't buy from there, but you can take a look yourself: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.37867
Otherwise the Moonse E7001 is the same device rebranded.
If you don't know what you have, look here:
http://www.hiapad.com/?p=218
The Youtube videos are probably what everyone should be looking at.
Other hints about what you might be getting a VIA one:
Android 1.7 (wtf?), Android 1.6
No front facing camera (some VIA models have them now, but the majority don't)
Gripes so far I've identified
Before getting the device, I've identified the following gripes with the device. I'll confirm these when I get it:
device heats up when charging?
screen cannot be brought back up when brightness is turned all the way down?
microphone does nothing?
camera can't scan barcodes, maybe resolution is too low?
They are planning an official update to 2.1 in July. Check the official hiapad.com for more information. But probably the update will take the same time as it does on the HTC Hero.. if it will ever come!
As the kernel is the biggest problem for good android development: what kernel does the archos use? .27?
Not sure, but I have reason to think that all 3 devices are on the same kernel with small modifications.
In fact the A7HT ROM boots on this device unmodified, but some things don't work.
I have not heard news about the A7HT being upgraded to 2.1. I am not expecting much in that department.
I heard that they would be coming out with the update also. It's on their webpage. Chip3c says it in one of the comments about the last update
Hi All
My friend order one from internet ,
it's Apad irobot it come with Android 1.5 , fron Camera ( but not clear " i think 1.3 MP " )
I try to get to the root so i can make it support arabic languge but could'nt .
it's nice for reading books , movies , internet .
thanks
I think I recall that even for the G1, getting Arabic to work around correctly was a pretty involved hack.
You can probably get the fonts in if they are not working properly. The ROM is rootable and you can modify the binaries. We just don't have any source code.
Slatedroid is down all the time.
I put together a ROM. It's on my blog. I suggest you read the cautions:
http://myapad.wordpress.com/
Flash tool: http://hiapad.com/?p=801&lang=en
My friends bought in Hong Kong almost the same but without front camera and with hynix memory inside, while new modules with camera come with samsung. They made mistake and tried to flash it with rom which was supposed for the version WITH CAMERA.
I've been trying to find the rom to flash into the device, actually hynix modules... Without luck. Although the device is recognized by the system as it should be RK28USB but then no go... black screen, even bootloader does not start. I'm not familiar with linux but thought that something could be done with it to put correct kernel and modules.
Any thoughts, please?
It seems like we will not get the 2.1 update:
Apad iRobot Wont have an update to Android 2.1
To all Apad iRobot owners,
Regrettably, we are announcing that our Apad iRobot is not upgradable to Android 2.1 or other versions of Android. We know we said that there was an effort to work on an update for July, but that is no longer feasible. In particular, our chipset supplier Rockchip has halted development of Android 2.1 on the RK2808 platform. We are disappointed as well.
We could have kept quiet about this, but we do not want to deceive you and thereby decided to be honest about this.
We still plan to release additional updates for Android 1.5. We believe that the Apad iRobot as a competitive device.
Many devices you see on the market today is a combined development and manufacturing effort by multiple companies. As such, this decision is not completely under our control given our jurisdiction and our resources. However, while we prefer not to go into details, we do play a crucial role in the manufacturing and development of the Apad iRobot. We do ask for your understanding.
In addition to this, we noticed that a lot of customers are inquiring about Moonse. We now clarify that we do not officially support any of Moonse products. We do not assemble the Moonse branded Rockchip tablets, nor do we supply them. We used to supply some non-electronic components to them, but that relationship is now over. We both make the Rockchip based tablet we call the Apad, but our processes are different. In particular, we have would like to warn those Moonse branded batch 1 customers with Hynix flash memory chips to be careful. Moonse Rockchip Apad components are interchangeable with ours, so for those of you who are stuck with Hynix flash memory, or have issues with their touch screens, you can contact us:
Internationally, www.digital3c.com via mail inquiry
Within China, you can use www.kaixin3c.com (开心3C) and leave an online message

Anyone know if HTC is considering getting into tablets ?
I'd like a wireless Tablet to do light surfing, read google news, and interact with my media.
I would buy one in an instant...dual booting Android and Windows Mobile 7!
What I would like, is an advantage, (which is almost a 5" tablet), with a proper earpiece
Android with lowest SAR
I'm deciding about my first Android phone. I want a phone with a very low EU SAR (0.20 - 0.60) and Android 2.1 - 2.2 . Can you help me?

[Q] Archos Android - 7" vs. 10.1"
I snagged a 7" Archos tablet, and it works pretty slick, but is only version Android 1.5 - very old. The 10.1" due out on 12/1/2010 in the US is reported to have Android 2.2 on it. Anyone have any comments on if the 7" will be upgraded, or should I return the 7" and wait for the 101?
The 7" is only on 1.5? Is this the NEW 7" or is there an old one?
I personally will be grabbing a 10.1".
Archos has 2 7" models. The Archos 7" Home Tablet and the Archos 7" Internet Tablet.
The 7" Home Tablet only runs Android 1.5
The 7 and 10" Internet Tablets will be running Android 2.2 once a firmware update comes out.
My recommendation would be to return the 7" tablet you purchased and wait until the 7" Internet Tab or 10" Internet Tab comes out.
Yep, you nailed it.
Thanks tbohnert! Yeah, mine is the home tablet, not the internet one. Ouch. Did not even notice the difference in the store... Wondered why it was only 1.5...
Taking it back today... They should accept the return with the usual stupid restock fee. Sorry, this was not the 'droid I was looking for...
;-]
the 7 HT is on 1.5 Android
the 7.0 IT is on 2.1 (i have 2.2 on test.... IT IS GREAT)

Shame the 101 is not the same spec as the 70, no option for 250gb hd. Is that being held back for the 101 mk2?
The 250 hd doesn't seem to drive the price up too much in the 7" version, would have been v useful to have it in the 10".

[Q] Google Nexus S vs Dell Venue Pro
Basically I am deciding between these two phones (assuming I can get a functional version of the venue pro). I want your guys' input.
MOD EDIT:
Due to the increased Next phone advice / models comparison multiple threads we are creating this one to place all your topic related posts so we can keep them on a single place to help others to find it easy.
I will be moving all that threads/posts in to this one, if you need to discuss anything regarding your thread moved please PM me.
Thanks for your cooperation
If you need a keyboard get the Venue Pro, otherwise get the Nexus S. I like Windows Phone 7 but im going to wait for it to mature first before I jump from Android.
Venure.
After the WP7 update in Janurary many of the qualms will be eliminated with the platform, and the Nexus S is, IMO, worse than a Vibrant.
It just runs stock Android instead of TouchWiz.
The biggest advantage Android fans spout over WP7 (the ability to expand storage) is not there in the Nexus S because it lacks an SD Card Slot.
WP7 has a better user experience than Android, runs better than Android does on factorably better hardware - with the same major capabilities. Has better battery life. Has better Exchange support.
WP7 devices are infinitely better media devices than Android phones.
If you use mostly just basic phone/internet browsing stuff on you phone any would do. If you want something a bit more flexible (probably a flamebait term... /lesigh) then go for WP7.
The keyboard is not that big of a factor. I wouldn't base any decision on just that.
Thunderbolt slaps NexusS
unofficial specs for the Verizon Thunderbolt posted over at htcpedia...
http://htcpedia.com/news/unofficial-htc-thunderbolt-specs-are-insane.html
You know how HTC loves to blow everyone away with specs, almost as if they're screaming "KNEEL BEFORE ZOD!!!" with their hardware? Well, if the image below is correct, then they're about to do it again with the HTC Thunderbolt.
This image, supposedly taken from a German retailer's system, lists specs for the European HTC Thunderbolt. And hol-e-carp are they amazing. Let's run though the spec list, shall we:
• 4.3 inch display (duh)
• Dual Core 1.2GHz MSM8960 processor
• Android 2.3
• 8 Megapixel rear camera
• 5 megapixel front camera (that's just obscene)
• 16GB internal storage
• microSD support for up to 128GB (read that again)
• 1800 mAh battery (why isn't this in every phone?)
• Kickstand (the kitchen sink of the phone world)
I think I just peed a little.

is this HTC's way of slapping Samsung and letting them know who should of really been the next Nexus?
If this is real, I may actually gain some respect for VZW lol. They finally decided to put out a high power Android phone like T-Mobile. Lets just hope its not Bingified and locked down haha.

Hello,
I would like to tell you about a fairly new device that's being sold in China for some while.
However, it's yet to be released in USA and Europe, but I would like to tell you about it, becuase I think it's 'very' unknown and it deserves far more attention.
The name of the device is: Alcatel One Touch 986, also known as Alcatel TCL S900.
My goal is to let more people know about this device so it will get it's own section in the forums and will eventually be improved by wonderful developpers.

well,

I have an Alcatel phone so this is interesting too if I know this is best Alcatel phone from your specs 4.5 inches is great !
frontal camera is for video call --> +1
yes battery is not so good
anyway impressive !
I hope they release kernel sources soon but you need to own such a phone to make a custom ROM !
search sourceforge for sources
I've been keeping an eye on this since I first heard about it in May, read that it was released in China but no set date for when it'll be available in Europe. Importing from China isnt the easiest task... but definitely looks like a nice piece of hardware at that price, kind of like original ZTE Blade in a bit higher price range.
Hopefully it gets a great community behind it.
Any info about if the Chinese and EU version will differ, EU release dates, possible good ways to import etc are appareciated.

How do you know the battery is not so good? What makes it less than others actually?
Recieved a phone.
Hello everyone.
Yesterday I recieved Alcatel OT-986 (TCL S900) from China, so I'd like to post a short review (I'll do my best with my awful English) and get some help to root it and customise Android (delete chinese apps).
If anyone could help, I'd be very greatful.

That's great man
I"m sure there are people who can help you out with customization. Unfortunately I am not one of those people, as I'm not so skilled with development and such.
But there is a thread about the development of Alcatel OT 995. Maybe that thread can offer help.
Here are 2 threads about the previous version that might help.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1731574
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1620387
I would like to ask for help as well but I don't have the phone, so I have actually no idea of what to expect.
If you would, you can make a new thread about it. Or if you want, information can be stored in this thread.

man thanks again to put this phone in my attention also for this nice video focus is not as good as a camcorder's obviously but this is a phone only not a camera but one with a big-big screen for ~300$ and here is my interest
Well, that was really a very first video. And was already pretty late. At the weekend I'll make a review, can't make it faster cause of the work. But the phone is amazing! Rooted it and deleted almost all Chinese apps. GSM and data works fine in 2G. But the best experience was the display. It's really amazing. I made some photos comparing it to my ZTE Blade, it would be in the review. The quality of the phone is ok, don't worry if it's Chinese.
That's all for now. If you have any questions or suggestions, please write them.
P.S. Sorry for my English.

Camera will be tested heavily.
But I wold ask your advice in games. Don't know any... Music quality will be tested with stock headphones, Senheiser IE4 and IE8. Which benchmarks would you prefer? Some screenshots of interface are already captured. More are coming.
Best regards.

They're quite the same, except the Nexus has Jelly Bean and better development.
Guys,
I'm just about to purchase this new Ugoos UT1 Android 4.2 TV Box. It's the first unit to offer H.265 support, which is why I'm getting it.
I found a review here. What do you think of this HEVC H.265 TV box? otherwise this seems perfect for me. Technical info only pls. No I bought it here type posts. Thanks!
Thought I'd share this and see what everyone thinks.

OK guys this has just been announced today regarding the Ugoos UM1, which is a Mini PC, not a TV box like the UT1 above. Now I can't decide which one to choose, as the UM1 they reviewed today has HARDWARE support for XBMC. Here's the Ugoos UM1 review here. XBMC Mini PC is very tempting, OK someone help me choose which one.

I've decided to go for both, as they cost next to nothing. The Dongle for around the house, and the TV Box for the front room. I'm so hyped up, looking forward to when they arrive. Will keep you posted.

No Bluetooth. Even though the Bluetooth menu is there in the settings, there is none onboard. Other than that, it is probably one of the best Android devices I've owned, despite being from a no-name Asian manufacturer. The system responds fast and played 720p videos without issues or stuttering.
I hope the devs can get there hands on these units, I would to love to see a custom ROM on this.

It doesn't. Geekbuying.com who is a seller for this product confirmed this for me. That's too bad because it is a very nice android tv box. Anyway i' ll go for T-R42. I suggest you do the same
I know it comes with a remote, but can I control this with my Nexus 7 somehow or do I have to buy the air mouse/keyboard?

I bought one. XMBC and Youtube videos are flawless. I have had issues with navigation with the remote and with my tablet using their control software. I've had to use a combination of both to really navigate quickly.
I think I'll end up buying an airmouse/keyboard combo.
Which Android apps are you all using with this device that you really like?
Go for the Ugoos UM2 then, has Bluetooth and has the same power and high quality hardware XBMC video decoding as the UT1. And it's cheaper than those devices you've mentioned.

Just got one as well. What XBMC apk did you install? I've tried 3 so far, all have terrible (lagging) hd-video playback and static sounds when i select hdmi/5.1 as audio output...
- xbmc-20130925-92bbdb9-master-armeabi-v7a.apk
- xbmc-frodo-12.1-xaf-neon-set_top-20130503-47b0a23c60.apk
- xbmc-20130714-6ec63cd-adddroidlibstagefright-armeabi-v7a.apk
They posted the exact XBMC version that comes shipped on the Ugoos devices. The thread is over here and contains the apk. The stock UT1 firmware has also been released here.

Although hdmi passthrough works with the stock mediplayer, xbmc won't recognize the drivers.
so you will get stuck with analog stereo sound for xbmc that is bad
hi

thinx
Not too much time ago I saw that ugoos prepared a new firmware for their past years' products
on ugoos.net
In particular they have 1.1.3 for Ugoos UT1 based on Android 4.4.2
A lot of bugs were fixed since last firware update release.
Hey guys, this is my review of the Voyo Winpad A1S, a 10.1" tablet running Intel's Z3735 processor and dual boots both Windows and Android, and it's cheap too, around $135. CHeck it out!
You can buy the tablet here for $145, and it goes down even further with the coupon code "VYA1SD"

Hey, thanks for the review. I've had this for a couple of weeks now & agree with all of your comments. Overall I'm quite impressed with this. I have another Voyo - X6s which performs quite adequately as well, hence my decision to purchase this one. I've rooted it (with iroot), which was quite easy. No real need to however I like to install a few apps on that require root.
For the price & spec's, this is quite a good value purchase
Awesome. It's pretty cheap for the price and not bad either. My review was shorter because I didn't have as much to complain about.
Any way you could please share your laptop drivers with me?

Did you ever get any drivers for the Voyo WinPad A1S. I have had this pad for a while but really never used it. I was going to give it as a gift. I wanted to see if Android update past 4.4 was possible. Also woul like to have Windows 10 on it as well.
Thank you,
Chris
