Thinking of getting new phone - General Questions and Answers

Thinking of getting a new phone. I'm currently using a Nexus 5 unlocked with T-Mo. I'm a fan of vanilla Android. My N5 is a little beat up after a year and a half use. I'm thinking of getting a LG G4, mostly because of the camera. But being a fan of vanilla, and basically Nexus devices. I'm not sure I want the G4. Nexus 6 is on the big side for me, and I'm not liking the AMOLED displays anymore. So should I get. A new N5, LG G4, N6?

I think you should go for Nexus 6. After reading your requirements and your liking towards vanilla android and Nexus Devices I think you should go for Nexus 6 only.

[Q] Nexus S for AT&T

I've been wanting to jump on to the nexus s bandwagon ever since it came out but like always it seems like AT&T is always lacking behind when getting top of the line android phones. Anyhow do you guys think it's worth the money getting the nexus s now? I know the galaxy II is around the corner but I'm not to found of the 4.3' screen I think 4' inches is ideal for me and I know dual core is going to be the next big thing but I see that the humming bird processor does hold up on it's own.
I have a few questions
How is the camera quality? I currently have the iPhone 4 and it does have a nice camera
Is running stock ideal or installing a rom is must to get the best out of the nexus s?
Will all roms work on the i9020a variant phone.?
Is it true that the browser is laggy? And have the reboots problems been fixed?
Where is a good place to buy the nexus s? Lowest price
Sorry for all the questions
I recently purchased the white Nexus S with at&t 3G bands from Negri so far I'm loving it. I also have an iPhone 4 as well. They both have pros and cons. In terms of camera quality the iPhone does win. Pictures are better as well as HD video recording which the Nexus lacks. That aside the Nexus is really a great device that's pure Android. Only place I know where to get it is from Negrielectronics.com for $600.

Thanks for responding!! Mind giving me your pros and cons compared to the iPhone 4? Are you still running stock or already put a custom rom on it? I think I'm just going to take the plunge and get it lol

I've been back and forth with my iPhone 4 and nexus s. I'll tell u this tho:
Camera is better on iPhone, but photos are only marginally better IMHO. The video quality kills the nexus.
Battery life is about the same.
Screen is better on the nexus. Larger and better color
Camera is much better on the iPhone hands down and battery life kills the nexus. The iPhone can easily go a full 24 with heavy use without being charged. The nexus on the other hand can not. I bring my charger to work daily while using it. That aside the nexus is a great device. Just buy it. And the white is sweet.

Well I went to a local bestbuy and bought the T-Mobile version to try it out lol. I'm responding with it right now so I will play around with it before I fully commit buying the att version since not having 3g sucks ass

That was a good idea to test it out. I'm sure you'll like it.

Worth to change my Optimus 7 to Nexus S?

Since I owned a HTC Hero and a Google Nexus One I wanted something new. So I changed to a Windows phone. The LG Optimus 7 is a great phone, really easy in use, great build quality,... I just have 1 problem, I miss Android to much So, because the Nexus S is so low in price I was wondering if it's still a good choice? I know the hardware is a bit outdated, but it seems that it's still is a great phone with a lot of ROM developement.
What do you guys think?

Wait for the nexus prime imho

Ow, forgot to tell about that. I don't like phones with such big screens. The nexus S has imo perfect screensize. If the Nexus prime had smaller screensize I would have waited.
And the low price of the Nexus S is nice too.
Then why wait?
Because I wanted to hear some other opinions
Is it still worth it? If you look at the price imo then yes.
I just sold my evo 3d and got a nexus. IMO the nexus is a better device. I don't even want to root it, yet.

I am also concerned about the size of the new Nexus ... time will tell. In the meantime I swapped my Evo for an NS4g. With Oxygen and Franco's latest kernel ... I could be happy with this phone for a long time.

I have an LG Optimus 7 and switched to the Nexus S. Mainly for the same reasons you are looking at. I think the LG is a fantastic phone, but I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with WP7 and wanted to get back to Android. I chose not to wait for the Prime for the same reason as you. I don't like the big screen. The 4.0" on the Nexus S is perfect for me. Its specs aren't that far behind. Here in North America there aren't a lot of phones with front facing camera, which the Nexux S has. It has NFC which I think is going to take off this year. It is going to get an official ICS upgrade if you don't want to root to get it.
The flexibility of Android is fantastic compared to the locked down Windows Phone....I'm so glad to be back with Android, and the Nexus S.
Dave
well sinc the galaxy nexus doesnt have a bezel it doesnt make the phone that much larger
Ok thx guys
I think I will put my Optimus 7 for sale then and go for the Nexus S.
I'd get it still... I have a nexus a 4g and had an epic 4g before that...stock Android has so much going for it that I could only recommend another stock phone like the prime... But as you said, it's not what you are looking for right now.
The build quality on the nexus a is great and it feels like a very solid phone. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone looking at Android in general. Much better than the other non nexus phones I've used

I luv reading these types of threads. Reminds me how great these phones are
I just picked up a Nexus S today and for the few hours I have played with it I am loving it. I don't like big phones either and was a little intimidated by the size but I think it is perfect for me even with tiny hands.
There were no surprises for me either, it is the pure android experience and so easy to use. I recommend the Nexus S to most Android users and would recommend the Galaxy Nexus to those who want the bigger screen.

Who will be jumping off the nexus bandwagon?

I will. Anyone else? In a couple months can't wait!
The overall specifications of the Galaxy S5 are: a 64-bit Exynos or a Snapdragon processor, it will pack 3 GB of RAM, a 16 MP camera, a 4,000 mAh battery, and it will run on Android 4.4 Kitkat.
This source claims that there will be a “Premium” model sporting a metal case, and a flexible OLED and one “normal” version sporting a normal OLED and a plastic chassis.
Samsung would need to do a lot more than that for me even to consider going back to them. Any closed-source exynos based device is off my radar immediately after the experience of my s3. Nah, even if the specs don't agree, nexus is a much better device for me.
Besides, any performance benefits of hardware are immediately lost when dropping touchwiz on a device.

I have left the Nexus line before and keep coming back - I'm pretty certain I'm gonna stick with the N5 until the next Nexus is launched
Have had the s3 and s4 never going back to samsung

after what theyre pulling with knox im never going back. sold my s4 to get the n5 and i love it in every way. the camera might only be 8mp but im able to take pics that are on par with the s4, some even better with OIS.
and i heard that the s5 is going to be unibody, which to my understanding means no removable battery. (may be wrong)
Yes technically the nexus 5 also doesnt have a removeable battery, but its so easy to take it apart without any real tools that i consider the battery to be removeable.
Though im not saying im going to stay with nexus. LG looks promising and so does sony. so my next phone may be from one of them if they are able to wow me and they are lax with rooting n such.

I'd rather fight than switch.
I can't do AMOLED screens. They strain my eyes like the crappy screens Apple is starting to use in their new products. Even with glasses, I get a dull headache after about 15 minutes.
well i was with htc for a while.. evo 4g.. evo 3d.. evo 4g LTE.. then i traded my evo lte for the S3.. then got the S4 when it dropped.. got bored with the S4 then traded my S4 for the HTC ONE.. didnt like the HTC ONE much besides the speakers.. so i sold the HTC ONE and got another S4.. Never liked stock android on any of them devices.. then i heard the N5 was coming out figured i would give Nexus a try.. so i orderd my N5 oct 31 from the play store.. got it a few days later.. and i have to say that i LOVE my N5 more then any phone.. wish i would have went with Nexus years ago.. now i love stock android.. so smooth/fast.. and i love flashing rom/kernels so the nexus is perfect for me.. so much development.. I would Never get another phone.. thats why i pray google dont do away with Nexus anytime soon.. i just got here and i love it!!:good: if i didnt like this Nexus so much i would prob get the S5.. cause notes are to big in my eyes and im so done with HTC taking 6 months to release kernel source.. Nexus FTW
Personally, I don't see myself buying another Non-Nexus device ever again (unless they stop making them). I've played with the HTC One, S4, and IP5s quite a bit (friends' devices) and wouldn't consider trading my N5 for any of those. I love vanilla Android and staying off of a cellular contract is nice as well.
Time for a change

You're comparing a phone thats standardly $350-400 Unlocked to a premium phone that would well be over $800.
My nexus is going to stick with me for a few years.
I'll be laughing becuase you'll be stuck on a contract/tab, and i've already payed out my phone.
I'm the kind of guy who has absolutely ZERO brand loyalty. I don't care who makes it, if it's cool I'll likely buy it. I have a MacBook Pro, Surface Pro, iPad Mini, Dell Venue 8 Pro, Nexus 7, Nexus 5, Moto X, and I've had a couple iPhones. I'm also a Ford truck guy but currently drive a Dodge Challenger. The point I'm trying to make is whatever the next great smartphone is, regardless of brand or manufacturer, I WILL buy it. So that means I am going to have the HTC One + or whatever it will be called, I'll also likely get the GS5 as long as there's a metal one like the rumors state. The Nexus 5 has been great to me, but it's just a phone. I get that it's a Nexus and everyone here are Nexus die hards, but there is nothing about it that screams "these are the only phones I will ever buy from this point forward." That said, I will also likely buy the Nexus 6, so long as it's cool.

64 bit processor is CRAP marketing that apple pushed and as everything apple does, Samsung will as well. The different is hardly measurable.
More than 2 GB on a phone is waste in my opinion, I never get much past 1gb anyway.
4000 mah battery is just CRAP except if the device is as huge as the note, it is not like Samsung invented some new super dense battery.
Not much of an upgrade apart from camera.
MOD EDIT: Profanity replaced...please read rule 2.1

Yeah I'm like this too, it's just that I don't have that kind of money to keep buying every phone that comes out
I have all 3 major ecosystems, and I really don't care which one I use. They all work great for certain things, and not so great for others.
No way I'll ever use Samsung phones again; bloatware, ridiculous software add-ons, flimsy designs, gimmicks, touch wiz and way too expensive. I'll stick with nexus until it isn't around anymore and go with anything BUT Samsung... overrated and overpriced. BTW I owned several Samsung's including the S4 and returned them all...

[Q] Is the nexus worth moving from htc one?

Hey!
I ask you as the users of the nexus.. is it worth to add 80$ and get nexus instead the ONE?
(I have the ONE)
Most defiantly YES!! Recently purchased a Nexus 5, tried out my dads HTC ONE for a few days and much prefer stock 4.4.2 compared to the ONE's Sence 5 overlay
Tough one. I'm a huge fan of Sense 5 and some of the features are brilliant. However I have never regretted moving to Vanilla Android!

[Q] About buying nexus 5

Would you recommend buying this phone if the low price factor was gone? Here's the thing, Nexus 5 costs the same as Galaxy s4 and only a little bit cheaper than Htc one and Lg g2 here in my country. Also which one out of those four i've mentioned would you buy?

I definetly beats the Galaxy S4, as for the HTC One the design is better than the Nexus 5, but if you want to have quick updates, a Nexus is still a must
S4 and m7 are older phones, so not as faster. Plus their OEM ROMs slow them down in comparison. The nexus is the fastest device there. I always buy the latest handsets. But I'm not you so do what you want

My S4 was way more than N5 and there's no comparison!! Nexus runs Aosp like a boss and no other device even comes anywhere close. Fact.
Edit added
I've been having Android since G1 all top end phones, 2 a year and this is my all time favorite. Comparing anything to a Nexus device is silly, Imo anyway. Sprint failed to carry the Mako or I never would have owned a S4. [emoji12]
Sent from my Nexus V
I'd forget the S4 and One and narrow your choices to the G2 and N5, then go from there. Tough to recommend a phone when we don't know what you're looking for as far as features go,
It's your choice. But the Nexus5 rocks and you're in a Nexus5 XDA forum!
If you want to flash everything under the sun....N5. If not, G2. Simple.
