[Q] does changing the dpi effect usage of nvidia's gaming apps? - Shield Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I want to change the dpi as the custom one is a bit too large for me. if i do, will it interfere with the usage of the gaming apps from nvidia and as such make it unusable?

[Discussion] Ways to improve UI response on Android

Given the recent hoopla in the blogosphere about how iOS places higher priority on User Interface actions than Android. I was wondering what ideas can be implemented in current Android or Linux kernels to get better UI response.
Overclocking or upgrading to a faster phone is the brute force way, a smarter way would be to give higher priority to user input instead of benchmark/multitasking score numbers. I think it makes sense to give the User input highest priority because in computation timeframes, user input is rare, and considering how important smoothness affects overall perception & enjoyment of a device, it's a good idea to allow other OS background tasks to take a backseat when the User wants to do something.
I'll start the discussion with two ideas I've implemented in a kernel recently that has shown improvements in UI response.
1. Switched to using SIO (Simple IO) scheduler (similar, but slightly lower benchmarks than Noop). Main difference is SIO prevents the system from hogging resources when large amounts of data needs to be read/written. It has a timeout so UI threads has a chance to run also.
2. Switched the touchscreen driver interrupt service request from using the general events workqueue (schedule_work()) to a dedicated workqueue (queue_work()). Touchscreen generated actions get to ride in the fast lane.
Any other ideas people have?

the thing is i may be using a note but when using ICS with apps that are updated for ICS, i feel its smooth enough. the real difference is i think ios uses completely different method for scrolling i.e. the bounce function and slight delay in finger recognition. same with ios touch recognition, it just somehow is better no doubt.
btw when i was miui with bounce it definitely felt smoother but although it wasnt ios smooth.

The main difference between ios and android is the fact they use ram in two totally different ways. Ios handles ram in a manner to make the user interface smooth as possible all the time while android frees ram to make multitasking better. The problem that android has is changing the way android handles ram to make the interface smoother for the user. They wont be able to for a long time because they have to do a total overhaul on the whole dalvik cache type setup that android uses.

i recently started using supercharger v6 which messes around with the ram and how it should be allocated for desired operations. I don't know if it's relevant but do you think it makes a difference and which setting would get you a better scrolling experience?
I liked the supercharger when I used the Droid Eris but since I've upgraded I get more redraws than without it. I used the 768hp I think.

you could edit the ramdisk to set more of a priority to rosie.apk or whatever launcher you use...just a thought

There are a number of issues that contribute to a "sluggish experience". The supercharger v6 script mainly keeps more memory free so that switching to new apps cuts down on the garbage cleanup of older apps. One of the downsides I've noticed with more aggressive lowmemkiller settings is a lot of apps get killed in the background when they need to stay for when users want to multitask.
The hardware acceleration route has downsides too from what I've heard, it requires more RAM per app just to have it enabled.
One of the articles posted earlier has good insight. Mainly because a lot of apps share a general events queue, and developers should not have a lot of blocking code in there, but developers make mistakes. The tools available for Android to develop and tweak UI performance seems lacking at this point.
How about SIGSTOPping everything else when you touch?

I find that either turning off cpufreq (by using the Performance governor) or increasing the lower frequency makes things a bit more snappy. For most governors, there's a delay between CPU load and the frequency being increased. This delay is usually noticeable if the CPU load is due to me working with the interface. By increasing the min frequency to, say 800mhz on a Nexus S, this makes things a lot more snappy than the default setting of 200mhz.
Another thing that helps with the smoothness (at least for me, in ICS) is the setting that forces GPU acceleration for all apps. For example, apps these days (well twitter and Facebook) have that pull down to refresh widget from iOS. Without forcing GPU acceleration, the rotating arrow animation usually hitches quite a bit, but is smoothed out with this setting on. This setting can be found in the developer options in the settings.

Turning up the min CPU can cause freezes on some peoples phone though and using the performance governor can drain the battery quick. The reason the CPU scales up the way it does before it gets to max frequency is to save battery.

System tuner pro has alot of tweaking options that on memory use
those that use launcher pro can find a memory usage setting in launcher pro to.

Agreed, but the whole point here was to help improve UI responsiveness. Without rearchitecting the OS, a good way is to allow the CPU (which is busy sharing its resources with non-UI work) to react more quickly is to ensure the CPU is at a higher clock rate before the UI needs it.
As for battery life, it really depends on your usage pattern. If you have a lot of background processing going on, preventing the CPU from going to sleep when idle, you may be better off scaling back the minimum cpufreq frequently. If your CPU actually goes to sleep, give scaling things up a try. A handy tool you can use to see how often the CPU is sleeping is CPU Spy. To see which apps are keeping the CPU awake, there's a program called Better Battery Stats available on XDA and market.
As for stability, I don't mean over clocking the CPU...all I'm suggesting is to increase the frequency the CPU goes to when the screen is on, but nothing much is happening. This should still keep things within safe limits.

I find the interactive governor does a very good job of ramping to max right from idle (instead of waiting even a few ms like ondemand does). It assumes coming out of idle the CPU is starved. Then scales back once demand lowers. No fancy locking to min freq when screen is off (which can stutter some background apps).
There is many thing what can be done in the code of the applications. For example once I had a really sluggish app. It turned out that while I was dragging an item in the UI, the UI needed to be relayouted, and the draw calls were simply postponed: in android (at least that was the case before ICS) the drawing of the UI is delayed while the UI thread is too busy with events and layout requests.
To find these issues it's really useful to use traceview.

[Q] Scale down an app for compatibility vs up?

I was wondering if there was a setting, mod, app or anything to be done about making an app that is set to a size too large for my 7" screen to scale down or at-least let me scroll it so i can view the entire toolbar? I know there are ways to make apps scale-up but I have not seen anything for making one scale down.
Long-story-short ... this is for wanting to use adobe ideas on a 7" tablet, but it could be applied to any app or game.

Best customizations to a stock rom

hello, i am buying a chinese phone, one of those with great specs, low price but no support...so what are the modifications i could make to increase its performance? what makes something like cyanogen better than a stock rom, with less lag, and so on? obviously the first thing i'll do will be root and remove the chinese programs and everything...and then? what else could i do? i was even thinking...the phone will have a 1080p screen, but lowering the output resolution to 720p would increase performance/battery? if yes, i could i do this? thank you
Sad to say, there ain't much to be done other than rooting and freezing unwanted stock apps. You can look into some universal scripts/apps that can improve your device's performance. Currently, I'm trying this out..

mmm...so what makes using a custom rom a good choice? just graphic improvements or changes? (custom launcher, icons and so on?)
Each custom ROM have their own unique features for performance or added functionality.. If you wanna flash custom ROM, you must at least get a device that is supported for development.

[GUIDE] Increase android gaming performance (resolution change) (ROOT NEEDED)

Hello everybody, and before all, sory for my english
The main objetive of this thread is to provide a guide to increase performance on high density screen GPU bound devices, for example, the nexus 10.
The last year android devices start shiping with very high definition screens, but without the necesary GPU muscle to make them work good.
Since I was a PC gamer, I know the terrible impact of high definition on the gaming performance, and, on this screen size, this is a useless impact, since the extra resolution are practicaly unperceptible.
The past week I spend a lot of time trying to change my device's resolution (a nexus 7) and with kernel modding, it is posible, but don't are great since I only play 1/3 of the devices usage, and the 1280x800 resolution are great for chat, browsing (or posting on the forum ).
Finally I find a great program that allow me to temporary change the display resolution of my device, and with the free version I was allowed to change resolution to 720x450, and on gaming performance, that was a GREAT performance updrade, even, with the wuality sacrifice (and on a 7 inch display, this wasn't a great lose.
In order to do that, I need to disable soft keys, since they bug A LOT with the resolution change, and to use a custom launcher because the default launcher bug too (go launcher ex is my favourite and the only one I test).
So, I leave a guide on how to prepare your device to use this mod to increase gaming performance, and to provide help to everyone who want it.
First of all, you NEED to be rooted.
Now, start with the device preparing.
Wee need a soft keys replacement, I recomend this one, work great and are really simple to customize.

To do that, you need to edit your build.prop with an editor or manually with a text editor and add this line.
qemu.hw.mainkeys=1
Now, on the next boot your device have the soft keys disabled.
To protect the status bar from being bugged, we need to change the lcd density of our display in order to allow a phone status bar (the phablet one bug on low resolution displays, and on tablets without sofkeys, we need a status bar.
To do that, we need to edit from the build.prop editor the "ro.sf.lcd_density" parameter and set it to something above 214 (nexus 7 have 213 and it enable the phablet interface, and on 214 it enable a full phone interface, but with small icons and more work space, you need to test and find the most usefull dpi for your device)
Now, we need to install the "magic app", and start testing resolutions and trying to find the most confortable for us, I have the paid version and use on the nexus 7 (16:10 or 8:5) 480x768 since it allow GREAT performance improvement and a good image quality for my screen size.

"dpi" is not physical resolution, it just changing icon and other ui element to small or big.
this terms confuse many people.
they think DPI is the screen resolution.

It's hard to take a video without a camera, but to give youman example, on 500x800 asphalt 7 give me 60fps on the shangai track, with my 800x1280 default resolution, I have 20fps aprox with a lot of fluctutations, it's a great app, and with GMD hide buttons, is almost perfect.

Yes, on the HTC Desire 480x800 display, you need to set it to something lower that it, for example, 360x600, it increase the gaming performance, this trick work great on high res display like the nexus 7 or nexus 10 displays for example, try to reduce the resoution to something that retain the original aspect ratio and be lower that 480x800, 360x600 or 240x400 make a grat change, but im not sure about image quality on this device...

ok thx i have tried to set it to 360x640 on the free version.. but nothing happens.. it just say "Display scaler free has been granted root superuser permissions" and nothing happens

Hey I bought the app and it works fine i tried most of the resolutions and even a custom one but it seems that no resolution lower than my physical one will go full screen i always get black borders do you get this too?

I tried tweaking my resolution to a higher one yet nothing happens on my Alcatel OneTouch T10. Any fix on this?
Sory for the lazy responce, I have so much time working and other personal things I read on the store that the apk only make the new resolution use the full screen on 4.2+ so if you are on 4.1-, you have it with black borders, sory, but I cant do anything for this :/

I don't know, I suppose, android mao this keys as a touchscreen surface or something like that, the most easybway is using gmd hide softkeys and with it, trigger a softkeys quick navbar and play with this, I am using Paranoidandroid right now and with the pie controls I fix all my problems, and on smanager I created 2 scripts to execute the commands to change resolution, one for the 500x800 for gaming and the other to 1280x800, the default resolution of the nexus 7.
Try it and leave me a comment with your experience.

Thanls for your reply.i have mtk quad core 6589T 1.5 ghz device with powervr 544MP1 and 1 gb ram . My screen is 1080p. i think gpu cant handle this resolution sometimes occur wierd lag and some highend games cant playable.After change resolution to 720p and 320 dpi everything perfect games performance increase %80-100 even memory consumption decreasing.(100mb).i am using with pie control but i want to using continiusly 720p i think after change resulotion touch key coordinates change over screen size.if i found that responsible cfg file or something maybe i can handle this.i am still searching..

For me, the way to go is sticking with default res for everything except gaming, as I say, I have two scripts on 2 widgets on my main screen, one with the commands
su
wm size 500x800
And the other with the commands
su
wm size reset
on jely bean 4.3 this commands set the override resolution of the screen.
on android 4.2.x the wm have to be replaced with am.
The app launch this terminal commands and override our resolution, but since I cant buy the app because of credit card and legal issues on argentina, I made my own scripts with smanager and swidgets . Quick on the fly change, and "letz rack!"
i am using this fantastic program on my thl w8s to scale resolution from 1080p to 720p during games and the speedup is fantastic...i set tasker to autolaunch the app when i click on the game icon, and once finished the game just click on fixes/reset resolution to bring everything back to 1080p . this program is great and the only one i have found...let's hope the developer doesn't abandon it and keeps making it better....and with a better integration in tasker maybe

[Q] Xposed framework RAM requirement

I was looking at this framework and as far as I understood, it gives a custom ROM like experience on stock ROMS
The way it works is (I'm talking about graphical mods) by replacing certain UI on-the-fly, that is hiding the stock elements and then showing the mod elements.
But in custom ROM, the stock elements are completely removed, we see what the developer intended us to see
Does this mean that a stock ROM with Xposed requires more RAM than a Custom ROM without Xposed?
If it requires more RAM, how well does it run in 1GB RAM phones?
I can not answer your question about ram usage. I'm not sure how much of the framework or the modules remains in memory after it makes changes to the default appearance. But I can tell you that xposed works fine on the Moto G. I've been using it on my LTE model for a few weeks and have been having fun trying out different modules. Of course, gravitybox is the mother of all xposed modules and has the most number of interface tweaks in one module. It's definitely the first module to start with. The main xda-developers.com website has a number of video reviews and articles about xposed modules - just search for "xposed" there.
Regarding Moto G memory usage, the minfree settings are overly aggressive on 4.4.4, so I recommend the following solution:

For rooted phones only, of course, but it makes a huge difference in usability. In 4.4.4, the moto G is too aggressive about killing apps to free memory so that you can't switch between two large apps without it killing one app and restarting it. By using the minfreemanager with the aggressive settings, the phone handles multitasking much, much better.
