[Q] Debugging non-working wifi dongle - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I've been tearing my hair out trying to get an external wifi dongle to work on my android. I'm running the kali nethunter ROM and trying to boot the kernel found here, but neither iwconfig nor airmon-ng (part of the aircrack suite) show any additional wlan devices. The output of lsusb shows two generic "linux foundation root hub", version 3.0 and 2.0 when I plug it in, and none when I unplug it, so I am assuming it is to some degree working.
I've tried two wifi dongles, one of which is explicitly supported by that kernel (TL-WN722N). Any ideas on ways I can debug where in the chain I'm experiencing problems?
Thanks!
P.S. I would just post in that thread, but I guess I'm considered a noob until I have 10 posts.

Yoo, I see you've tried to use the same dongle I have the TL-WN722N, did you manually flashed the boot.img or did you flashed a zip like pwn_kernel_10062014.zip ?
You can also go to "About Phone" and confirm that you've flashed it
Also, check the files at "/system/etc/firmware/" if you do not see the htc_7010.fw, htc_9271.fw and other firmware files etc... something went wrong with flashing
Having the kernel is not enough, firmware files are really important for detecting these wifi dongles

Thanks for the quick reply
I guess I thought kernel == firmware! I'm still not getting the distinction between ROM, kernel, and firmware I guess. I wanted to still be running nethunter so I just did the boot.img. I'll check that out when I get home. Do you accept donations? If you do, I'll be sending something your way if I get this working

Viewpad 7 - how to root?

How to root Viewpad 7?
Anybody suceeded?
Ok,
Use SuperOneClick, just make sure to click 'run as admin' if win7. That was were I screwed up.
In case you have issues here is a step by step:
a) Download the latest version of Super One Click (currently 1.6.5).
b) Place your Android device into debugging mode, and connect to computer.
c) Right-click the Super One Click executable and select 'Run As Administrator'.
d) At program launch select 'rageagainstthecage' exploit method, then select 'Root'.
e) If there is no activity for more than 30 seconds and the terminal display is stuck at 'Running rageagainstthecage....' remove the USB plug momentarily and plug back in.
f) You should get the message “***IF IT KEEPS LOOPING, TRY DISABLING USB DEBUGGING NOW***” followed by an ADB reset, waiting for device, and finally a successful rooting message. (Apparently the looping issue is a known bug).
g) Once this process is complete your prompted to test the root condition. Follow the steps to verify.
Yes, I rooted it that way. Thank you very much!
How about unroot with Super One Click, does it work too?

Now let's put Gingerbread or Honeycomb on it!!
I'm working on an AOSP port of Gingerbread for the Viewpad 7 as we speak. Once I can get the basics working I'll open a dedicated thread.

I don't know of any way TV out would be possible since there is no mini-HDMI port on the device. One of the main things that should be fixed is HD video playback. It really seems like Viewsonic rushed they're tablets to the market. Aside from that and lack of Flash I think it's a great tablet...especially for a developer. Having the 3G radio and GPS is really nice, as well as the screen compatibility mode.

It uses a Qualcomm MSM7227 ARM11v6 processor with Adreno 200 graphics, clocked at 600MHz. It's been benchmarked in direct comparison to it's 1GHz Snapdragon cousins, so don't let the clock speed fool you (performance would be comparable to the original Motorola Droid). It's certainly capable of running Flash, but Adobe has been less than forthcoming about releasing a version which will support this architecture.
There are many other devices using this chip that have been released just a couple months ago, so it is still very much in wide use. I don't think anyone has ever found a workaround (aside from using Flash Lite). So until Adobe comes around, we'll be stuck using Skyfire.

I just got my Vpad7 yesterday, and i'm already annoyed at the default 2.2. Even as rooted, my milestone with 2.3.3. still outshines it.
I cant even find an update.zip it'll accept. So when you got something worth testing, or a kernel worth booting, please allow me to test it

Because Adobe decided not to support the ARM11v6 processor architecture, even though they had a working build for it. You can use Skyfire browser to watch flash videos in the meantime.
BTW, guys, where to get and how to install custom recovery on Viewpad7 ?
I can't install custom ROM, reason of stock recovery wan't install unsigned update.zip ;(
Hallo guys..
I tried on my viewpad7, superoneclick 1.7 on linux ubuntu.. but no success.. any hint for me?
always stop at
chmod..
I read to do a adb reset, but I am a bit ..
For the recovery rom I saw in modaco that there is a clockwork recovery rom ad hoc.. but I need root to install it.
ahh, before root it, I wish to have a backup, anybody know a way to backed up the original rom ?
thank you!!!
Per request I've created a separate thread documenting the installation of alternative recovery partitions and installing custom firmwares. You can find it here:

Hello,
no it sounds that in linux the SuperOneclick doesn't work with this viewpad7..
I read some groups in germany and only windows 7 ... umm
But really there is no way to backup the rom before root?
I am in with adb .. but read not permitted..

[Q] Update for Star A2000

Hello i recently bought a chine cell : the star a2000
i was wondering if there was a way to update android ... i'm currently in version 2.2.1, help me please
I need one too please. Any way to get a DUAL Sim ROM with Android 2.3 Gingerbread for the Star A2000?
I recently bought the Star A2000 too, its a great phone but the only drawback is the lack of english support. Would be great if anyone here could provide some help (yes I'm a noob) for upgrading this thing to gingerbread.
Keep an eye out for a post I will be making shortly I hope to cover everything from rooting the phone, to installing recovery and roms to repackaging roms and restoring the imei after factory reset very shortly.
Helo! Me too bought this nice phone about month ago. By now aplied a custom flash from forum . china-iphone .ru /viewtopic . php?f=31&t=13988 forum. Now it works quite faster then on stock flash (befor I had rooted my phone and changed recovery to modified clockworkmod (also in that Russian forum) - very powerful and stabile.
Now I'm wonderin' whether it possible to install android 2.3 to my phone or not. I believe it is? but at the moment have not a clue where to start.
Hi Guys - please check out my post on these phones here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18046607#post18046607
As far as I am aware there is no Roms made that will install 2.3 yet for these phones - however there is come good news too!
I have seen these phones A1000/A2000 on the internet with 2.3 already installed - what we need is someone with one of these phones to create a nandroid back up for us.
I am currently working on porting a cynagenmod android 2.3 ROM to the phone but I am still a long way off as I have come from a PC background... but have managed to customize a few ROMs already to suit my own phone.
Porting a ROM is a big jump though so it is going to take a lot of reading and likely trial and error but I do believe it is possible.
I would love to hear some tips comments or advice from any developers. I do not see why it can not be done if there are models coming with it standard - but I can not be sure.
Great! You're giving me a hope about 2.3. I believe it's portable on our device because architecture requirements musn't change dramaticly since 2.2. Actually I'm from Russia and know 4pda forum, but on chine-iphone (I gave link in previous post, just erase 6 spaces) there are more informations about particular device flashing. If something unclear feal free to help in translation from Russian.

hi my friend, i have an oficial usb to com cable for the a2000, i've buyed this cable because when i was flashing it using the sp-flahstool, the software jumped at an error, thus interrupting the flashing procedure, now the phone does not even power on, there is no ligths, no reaction to any action from the phone, like if the phone has no battery plugged in or whatsoever... the battery is ok, i have other exact same phone, so all the batteries are fully charged, but it is still dead...
thing is, my computer recognizes the cable as a prolific usb to com cable, i have the latest prolific drivers so there all good with it... but when i try to flash the device gives an error that it can not get to the brom chip, and suggest me to connect the phone, im taking the same steps for flashing with this cable that when i flash it with regular cable, following the tutorial on bm-smartphone-reviews, but no joy... i even tried to fash my working phone with the usb-to-com cable, but the same results... am i doing somethig wrong? im skipping a required step?

[Q] Working on ICS...

Hello people,
This is my first post here, so I hope I am putting this in the right place. If not, sorry, please move it.
Anyway, as you all are aware, ICS source code was released a couple days ago, so I decided that I would see if I could begin constructing a ROM based off AOSP for the G2x.
As predicted, it did not go well. I pulled the build makefiles and the like from CyanogenMod (hope that's okay), and tried to use those as device-specific build instructions. I got everything to compile with no errors, and the ROM successfully installed, but does not boot.
Best I can tell, the phone gets through the kernel boot alright, but halts at the "A N D R O I D" screen (no boot animation file is included). The touch panel seems to be responsive.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be wrong? Any help is greatly appreciated.

We have 3 people working on it... your assistance would be of great help
Okay, so I tested the idea of changing the bootclasspath in init.rc, and it didn't seem to be helping much. In fact, it may have hindered things. Before the modifications, the phone would finish going through the two lg splash screens. Now, it hangs on the second. Suspect bad merge of ramdisk and kernel. But as for now, sleep is calling. I will work on it more tomorrow.
And I'm glad I can be of help. If you would like, I could throw what I have on megaupload, see if what I have is valuable.
You don't have ICS built device drivers and the kernel needs to be built for ICS. If you do not get it to boot nothing will work except maybe the touchscreen if you are lucky.
Right. Device drivers. But we were able to port Gingerbread to this device with Froyo drivers, yes? What about compiling the ICS kernel source (if it is out) for the G2x. Would that yield any kind of results?

This is sounding a lot like the Hackintosh driver hacks, which I've done, to get the Mac OS to run on PC hardware of various kinds. In that world, drivers from previous iterations and versions of the Mac OS are merged into the Mac OS to enable various PC hardware which Apple didn't support in the new OS version. One example is the video drivers which Apple supplies for very few video cards but have been hacked to run other, non-supported video cards. As well, Apple is notorious because it orphans perfectly useable and upgradeable Apple Mac hardware by not providing video drivers for it in new releases of the Mac OS. When Mac OS 10.7 was released some people used the Mac OS 10.6 hacked and/or unhacked video drivers and hacked video drivers for OS 10.7 to keep their PC display hardware working. Keep trying.
Got the kernel source. I'll start messing around with it today.

[Q] compiling kernel. e3 d2203 arm arch.

No possibility of parallel connection of BT headset and smartwatch

Hi folks!
Maybe my problem was discussed and solved elsewhere, if so - please redirect me as I wasn't able to find anything on topic.
I have a Photon Q (obviously) and wanted to connect it with smartwatch and bluetooth earphone to have perfect set - someone is calling, I'm checking "who is who" on the smartwatch and pick up (or not) by bluetootch earpiece. Well, although I've paired both of them with my phone, I can use it only partly becouse only one of them can be in the state "connected". When the smartwatch is connected, earpiece is not connecting automatically after switching on and vice versa. Even if I force connection of both, earpiece is connecting with state "connected (without phone)". The effect is when the smartwatch is connected, I can see who is calling on it, pick up and talk through it (it has speaker and mic - LG Urbane 2) but nothing is redirected to the earpiece. When the earpiece is connected, I can pick up and speak through it but there is no info on the smartwatch who is calling (although the rest of notification stuff still works ok)...
I've tried to do some magic with the BT settings of both devices, swith off the telephone profile for the LG, leaving it for the earpiece only - no success. Can anybody help me? Is it problem of my phone, my ROM (CM 13) or my bluetooth devices? I've read that people have no problem with connection and parallel work of two BT devices, can check who is calling on the watch and pick up by earphone, which is very intuitive and convenient.
Greetings

No, I didn't try it, just after purchase I've sent it for SIM modding and since then I'm using CM ROMs, CM12 and now CM13. I was thinking about the fact that this problem may be caused by the soft but on the other hand CMs looks like quite well prepared so I was not sure... But if you suggest this, I must give it a try. Could you advice me where can I find this stock ROM for the Photon? I just don't want to load any crappy build and brick the phone.
Thanks in advance

Thank you very much for your help. Just one more question - is it possible to install it with TWRP recovery? Becouse TWRP I have installed sees nothing (I suppose it expects zip file, as the CM update files looks like). In the catalogue is the file named "recovery" - is it recovery needed for installation of this ROM? Will it be possible to go back to my present ROM and recovery in case BT problem would not be solved?
Thanks again

You can grab a version which is flashable via TWRP from here.
If you want to use the one provided by CornholioGSM, you'll need to flash with RSD Lite.
Thank you very much guys. I appreciate your kindness and I hope it will solve my problems.
All the best for Xmas and prosperous New Year!
