Surface Pro 2 CPU Limited

Hi all,
I've had my Surface Pro 2 256/8 since release and all has been fine until (possibly) the firmware update.
Turbo Boost was working fine and the CPU was going up to its maximum of 2.6Ghz but it is now seemingly capped at 2.23Ghz.
I've checked in PC Settings, Task Manager and CPU-Z, the maximum that the CPU ever reaches is 2.23Ghz, as indicated.
Anyone else experienced this? I have tried all power profiles (Performance, balanced, Power Saver and there's no difference).

EDIT: Having used HWiNFO64 on the High Performance profile I can see that the core is limited to x23 which is producing the 2.3Ghz clock speed. It occasionally indicates x26 (2.6Ghz) for a millisecond before ThermMon shows that it is being throttled back to x23. So it appears it's not reaching maximum speed to keep the heat lower, why this has happened is still inconclusive..
Have you tried to change the CPU maximum utilization in power settings?

You've answered your own question. One reason to cap speed is for battery life. That's what the latest firmware update provides. You've found the downside.

So they cap turbo mode to increase battery life, given the SP2 is advertised as having an Intel i5 CPU with no mention of speed on the MS site I think they'll get away with it...

Well, in that case, the CPU shouldn't be capped when NOT running on battery power, should it?
There is also cooling to consider regardless of if it is on battery or mains. Although was heat particularly problematic pre-update?

As another noted, SP2 slicks never said CPU would be running at max spec.
PCs are normally more configurable. But if you enter SP2's UEFI setup, the only thing you can change is Secure Boot. MS is emulating Apple in more ways than one.
The cynics among us (guilty as charged) would say that MS handled this just right: Release the device with uncapped speed to get the best possible performance for reviews. Then afterward, cap the speed to claim "improved battery life" as well. If MS had capped the speed to start with, SP2 would be no faster than SP, and would get slammed hard. SP2 is already slammed as having minimal improvements over SP.
Reviewers aren't going to take the trouble to revise their reviews, and even if they did, not many people will re-read them. So, with this method, you can indeed have your cake and eat it too. Think of it as a more "legal" form of juicing performance tests without the explicit cheating that Samsung and others resorted to.

Anyone thats knows the difference between the CPU's will know that theres not a huge speed increase though, the only thing they should of done was stick a decent SSD in there, I've got an unused PX-256M5M sat on my desk that reads/writes at near on full sized 2.5" SSD speeds where as the mSSD's have always had half decent read and poor write.
Other than that what else is there to improve on, the camera perhaps as per the Surface2, battery life, check, the only other thing the Pro/Pro2 needs imho is more accesories, yes they are coming but should of been ready at launch imho, I'm crying out for a dock...

Any Surface Pro mods?

Had my pro 2 about 3 weeks now. Slightly undervolted using XTU (CPU -55, Cache -70, GPU -85). Tweeked a few settings here and there, use a different stylus and wacom drivers, but nothing major. I wondered if anyone had done any serious mods to their device to have it running better?
Could you underclock the turbo therefore while leaving a lower max potential performance increase the amount of time that it is in turbo rather than throttled?
Since it gets so hot under load and some of that heat gets transferred to the case I wondered if putting to smallish heatsinks on the main hot spots would increase the thermal dispersion from the processors. The back of the case near the vents get to about 55 deg from what I can see through searches. Those little fans really seem to struggle under load resulting in fairly regular throttling. Not sure if this would make much of a difference though. I'd seen ones that were 40 x 60 x 6mm which i thought wouldnt be too much of an additional bulk but would increase the thermal conductive area and mass.
Cut back the turbo boost and max turbo boost from 17.5W and 25W to 15W and 18W. The XTU benchmark score was reduced from 307 to 306, so marginal difference but there was 0 throttling and a max temp of 78deg. I think I have my solution to keep the temp under 80 to eliminate throttling and thus large fluctionations in fps in games.
Conclusion, lower max performance and ever so slight reduction in average performance under high load, but much more stable performance for games and other processor intensive activity.

High SoC Temperatures

so according to JerryRigEverything Teardown of the Mix 3, there is thermal paste on the SoC to lower the temps, however according to Antutu and CPU-Z sensors my SD 845 reaches 40-45 ALOT during light use; almost at idle being 36-40C, as high as 50C a couple of times, and 45-47C average during gaming opposite to my previous Honor Play which topped out at 42C after like 2 games of Pubg and ranges from 30-35C normal light use.
my antutu scores aren't suffering though my average is 295,000. (a bit higher than other SD845 phones that aren't "gaming" phones)
is it normal for SD 845? since it boosts to 2.8 GHZ
is it xiaomi pushing the SoC a bit to gain an edge? more heat due to more sustained boost for example.

on the other side, my battery temps are low, like 28-30C idle, 30-32C light use and like 33-36C gaming & wirless charging

I've been using a V20 for several months now and I'm really enjoying the many features and flagship-grade hardware it offers. However, it has a lot of problems in terms of design. The V20 runs REALLY hot, and all that heat comes with an enormous power consumption (most figures for stock SOT, including my own, are around four hours.)
I've had a few ideas of my own for correcting LG's mistakes, and I'm wondering what all of your experiences are.
Underclocking the processor: The 820 is a fast, yet power-hungry and hot, processor. Underclocking it would trade off performance in favor of cooler phone and more battery life. Has anyone tried modifying the stock CPU governor or in any way messing with the clocks? I've experimented with LKT but didn't really notice any significant improvement.
Undervolting the processor: I'm not sure about how feasible this is on Android devices. Undervolting the processor would increase battery life and cool the phone at the expense of stability. Anyone find that the CPU is running at an necessarily high voltage?
Reducing Screen Resolution/Framerate: The V20 uses a 1440p display. With its screen size, most of the time this isn't necessary. Are there any tools to automatically reduce resolution when not playing back fullscreen 1440p content? Has anyone tried one, and what are the effects?
Aftermarket batteries: I've been using a 10500mAh extended battery. While it brings SOT up to usable levels, it's very heavy (and has over the course of a month or two decayed to only around 7Ah.) What's the general opinion on these?
Thermal pasting: Repasting or using at thermal pad has been a very common procedure for this device. For those who have done this, what kind of objective analysis of its effects can you providef?

You did not mention what variant, most of the issues you mentioned can be rectified by flashing a custom rom and kernel

There is also the almighty...AKT (Advanced Kernel Tweaks Mod you can flash. Use the 820 selection.

Although LKT and AKT do have some advantages, they didn't give me much more Screen On Time - so I removed them. Have you gotten a significant more amount of SOT? If so, what settings?

I can get around 10hrs sot (depending) using Xana extreme battery. That's the one I'm currently on.
Have a 4200 mAh battery (reg size)

It is hard to tell. Alot of placebo mods out there. I also put zram at zero and knocked my entropy to 2048 for write. I'm still learning and tweaking tho.
Going along with this, which is better: AKT or NFS-Injector?
I would propose that most custom ROMs are probably placebo when it comes to battery life. Very few mention changing anything related to CPU governor, resolution, etc. all of which are the main factors in power consumption (running in Doze 5% more of the time isn't going to affect SOT, for example, which is the only metric that really matters.)
It doesn't help that LG's display technology leaves much to be desired.
Guys, order a Perfine 4100mah battery in Ali....ess and be happy. Better than that 10000mah ugly fat battery cases. SoT about 7 hours. And if that's not enough for one whole day you are facing other problems lol..

Advanced Interactive Governor guide for LG V20?
I have seen the "Advanced Interactive Governor" tweaks elsewhere on here for other phones, but it looks like some of it may be able to be used on the LG V20.
(Links to a few of them will be at the bottom for reference.)
I have calculated the frequencies for both CPU's on the T-Mobile variant, the H918, for both maximal efficient load, and minimal efficient load, according to the math in those articles. If anyone would like to try this on an LG V20 with me and help me work out specifics for this phone, it would probably speed up the process quite a bit, and I could share what I have so far.

In that case: I am facing other problems.
For some reason this is currently getting me only about 2 hours SOT on a used V20 I just bought. Battery capacity seems good according to accubattery.

Question Undervolting the ROG 5 - Any feedback?

Have any ROG owners undervolted this device yet? What tool did you use, and most important, how's the result? I'm thinking of undervolting it by a notch for better battery life during normal use. Looking for a solution that doesn't conflict with the built-in ASUS modes and setting controls that I want to keep on the device.
Honestly can't justify it in 2021. I come from a LONG history of lowering voltages, but the phones have come a long way with battery conscious modes and other features that don't make the instability worth it now. It makes more sense to set more aggressive limitations than flat out reduce the amount of power the phone can access.

Do you mean in terms of a single charge or in terms of the entire lifespan of the battery?

Sure, undervolting can increase the lifespan of the battery. Never storing the device fully charged will also increase lifespan. Only charging between 20 and 80 will increase lifespan. There are hundreds of impractical things that will increase the lifespan, but then you need to stand by an outlet all day and only take one call between the hours of noon and three.
The thing you need to know before jumping into setting values is how Asus determined the default voltages. Nvidia, for example, sets theirs well over the efficient values. Samsung sets theirs practically right above the bare minimum. Too low and the device will short (power down) randomly. Too high and it will go supernova. Both will cause more damage than improvement.
If you do decide to modify, the best recommendation I could make is to shave off the values on the top end and leave the ones towards the bottom. At lower clock speeds, you aren't generating any real heat and there is little to gain from trying to reduce the power when it is already minimized.

Surprised there isn't a magisk module for that. Repacking the entire kernel to find out the values were too high / low seems like a hassle.

I hear you. I'm not going to jump into moding values, especially not on this phone. I wanted to drop the volts just slightly and see if if it gives better battery and less heat during normal use. I'll be the one to say it loud - the battery life of this device is not that impressive to be honest considering it packs whopping 6K mAh - even on an optimized & debloated device in durable mode with 5G off and display refresh rate kept low. You would expect a hungry device with the ROG5 specs but I suspect ASUS may have been a bit too aggressive with the tuning to squeeze the highest possible peak stats out of it vs the competition. Maybe they'll tweak it in future firmware updates..

My rog 5 has been ordered but not yet delivered
I'm going a different route with it. If a kernel ever actually boots, I am trying to port an old governor that is a little more strict on when to ramp up.

I used konabess, I overclocked my rog 5 to 855mhz and undervolted all clocks down by 2 levels and here are my antutu results. Very minor improvements on gpu and temp. But i definitely get longer sot now while gaming.
