Hello, I am going to visit the US in August and I would really like to buy Samsung Captivate, but not the Samsung Galaxy S (I really hate its iPhone style design)
Is it possible for a foreigner to buy Captivate (and unlock it) and use it with my own sim card here in Russia?
just found this instruction - http://ddd.in.com/videos/watchvideo...ngular-att-free-network-sim-code-8507521.html
does it work?
As for non-contract? yes! It will be $350 in any AT&T store.
As for unlocking it, i'm not sure.
so I can just come and buy it in AT&T store without showing some documents like I am a citizan of the US? and btw the price is very low, comparing with its price here in Moscow - $1000
Then, I need just to unlock it for any sim card?

LoL! Yes dude, you can buy it. The only citizenship doecuments you need are US Dollars!
Thanks, dudes, you really helped me)
It's really promising)
The design of Samsung Galaxy S really suks and the Captivate one is awesome
dark, just in case you didn't already know, as of now unlocks aren't available, but it's highly likely that they will be soon. This means that you wont be able to use your phone right away when you get back to the mother land.
On the other hand if you hang in there, by the time unlocks come out, there will be plenty of guides on how to make this phone look as little as the ios as possible. Not to mention alot more online support for it.
Just wanted to make sure you didn't get back home to a huge disappointment .
Good point. I just assumed he was aware of that. As quickly as this thing is gaining momentum, I doubt you'd have to wait long before it's unlocked.
Well, just read the review on one web-site and there was a phrase:
AT&T won't let you sideload apps.
I am confused, does it mean that there is no android market???????????
I saw a video - how to unlock Samsung Captivate - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dlxc6AJaAys
Does it work?
So if it's fake, I am planning to stay in the US until the end of August, are there any chances for the unlock to reveal?
There is a market, but you can't put stuff on there that isn't from the market.
With AT&T, the only thing can be installed is stuff from the market.
Do you mean that it's just not possible to put .apk files in the phone?
Well, in this case I am OK with Android Market
crap, just read in another review, that there is an AT&T Market - this totally sucks!
So, it is different from Android Market?
Or there are two markets there?

Yup thats pretty much the case, so if you do not mind it, you are good to go. I would not worry too much about an unlock as this phone is spreading faster than fire through the community and should be unlockable pretty soon.
That I have no idea about. I have never owned an Android phone so I only go by what I have read.
but as of this weekend, I will own one!
Maybe root will help us to install 3-rd party apps?
Guys, please post additional info about unlock , when some new information reveals.
I am really interested in this phone.
And can someone check if it is possible to choose Russian locale? I mean transforming the interface to the Russian one
Here is an unlock instruction http://hyfeno.com/unlocked-samsung-i897-captivate/
it seems like it should work
btw please advise me the cheapest US 3g network I am planning to travel in many states of the USA for a month...

You should try asking AT&T for the unlock when you purchase it from them. They should be able to provide you with one free of charge since you are paying for the phone outright!
After paying 6 bucks, this is the reply I got from their site.
Hi,
unfortunately your code wasn't found in our database, would you have another phone you like to unlock?

I'll be calling them today.
AND it's not a free unlock code.
it's 6 bucks as mentioned.

well, may be you misspelled the code?
if it finally works, it's better to pay these 6 bucks, than paying $1000 for the ugly version of Galaxy S here in Russia
The non contract price I was just quoted from the ATT store were I purchased my phone said the the price off contract was 499.00
I was going to buy this phone for 350.00 but 500.00 is a little steep.
so is it $350 or $500?
I heard that $500 is just for t-mobile version
I was going to go over there to exchange it and buy it out right. Look at the prices of the galaxy s line on ebay,500$ sounds about right.
500$ is what I was told from a corporate ATT store.
Hi
I have a phone locked to AT&T.
I want to unlock it.
I found UNLOCKING.COM. Their prices are very good but I searched in the google and some people say they are scammers and some say they are not.
Any one tried this site? Can I trust it?
No!!! Don't trust any of those, "unlocking" .com sites... They are almost always scams... I've tried one and it took 2 days to tell me that my phone couldn't be unlocked, and they would send me a refund that, of course never came...

Can you unlock it yourself? I know it's pretty easy to unlock the G2.

I don't, but I have no experience with that phone.
You should be able to get the unlock code from AT&T if you have had your phone/contract for a certain amount of time, i think its a law in the states now...
The problem is i'm out of the states now.
But I found a way to unlock it for my self. I will try it.
Which phone manufacturers don't require a code to unlock the bootloader and which do?

I don't think that there are manufacturers that don't require a password to unlock their phone.
Can you copy the title into your post please, because we can't read it it on the app
Oh, and you'll be more likely to have answers if you post here:

Sure i copied it.
I have 2 Lenovo tablets one bought last month that don't require a code to unlock bootloader.
Not sure if Lenovo phones require code or not tho.
Also i have a Blackview phone, bought last year, that didn't require a code also.
So there are manufacturers that don't require code to unlock bootloader.
I always check this before i buy something.
That's why i am asking so i don't have to look into every phone every time i wanna buy something.

Just , If you're planning to buy a Huawei phone, we cannot unlock their bootloader any longer, so check out other phone if you plan to unlock the bootloader

Ye i was thinking of buying because i figured prices would go down because of the ban, but not anymore.
Trump was right banning them after all.
But they sell on internet codes to unlock Huawei for around 50$. Just out of curiosity do you know how they get those codes or why they cost so much ?
Do you think I'll get better luck with Xiaomi ?

Definitely, codes on sale for 50$ are a scam (at least that's what I think).
Go for Xiaomi, they're doing a great job.
But if you want a nice stick experience for 399$, I'd advise de Pixel 3a

Ye pixel would be a good solution or maybe Samsung.
Does ODIN unlocks all Samsung phones ?
Doubt it's a scam tho since even XDA guides on how to root Huawei phones advise to purchase a bootloader code for 50$

Don't and do is a very expansive and at times subjective question.. seeing as the likes of Huawei / Honor tend to change their mind like the wind..
To put things into context, what is your preference? Id assume without a code right?
At this point in time there is one device I would recommend which had the essence of Android at its heart and that is OnePlus.
It doesn't have the best of everything but it has the best of what matters and they appear to care about what Android users want as they continue to provide us with things that make us tick..albeit now with a swollen price tag.
There are others but not in the same calibre or price /performance ball park.. I think the pixel series is along the same lines but pixels (camera aside) are ridiculously priced, even though their original party trick was to be cost effective devices for their price range.
Ones to avoid, anything niche, Huawei, and anything with an efuse chip with a company that will adhere to it's alteration ie: Samsung.
Just my opinion but hope this helps..
Perhaps there's a list, may take some doing to collaborate though and to maintain..
:good:
@dladz It would make more sense to me to throw 2000$ more in a gaming PC than 200$ more in a phone that will give you stats that i cannot imagine what use someone would have for them.
In that sense OnePlus is probably not for me.
As for efuse, first time i read about this, does it just voids the warranty or there's more to it ?

Sorry pal I've not seen this til now lol.
Efuse isn't just Samsung AFAIK, but they do use it.
Who's spending 2000$ btw?
The oneplus is less than most phones, certainly less than Huawei, plus it's faster, a LOT faster. And the camera has caught up too.
$499 for the base model, a device which will never slow down, ever.
PS: my pc overall was around £5,000 in total plus upgrades so I tend to aim high, reason being is it's hard to accept less when you've had the best.
FunkyHuawei has now the Huawei bootloader unlock service available again.
Can it be trusted? Price is now 190 USD

Not so much the question of whether it can be trusted, but who the heck is going to shell-out 190usd just to get code?!
The phone's not even worth that much these days

FunkyHuawei is very patient... 190$ for one code... idiot...
FunkyHuawei again. How many times do you people need to be taught that FH is a scummy website?
190$ just to be able to root it? You can clearly forget ROM development on the P20 Pro and not even that would makes the price reasonable
No point, the phone is hardly worth a free bootloader unlock as there is nothing you can do with it.

This.
Good news but Jesus fkn Christ, 190 ? What yen? That's absolutely taking the piss.
I'm one month away from contract ending. Going to give this to my mum, shell like the camera.
OnePlus 8 for me.
One thing to note though, if funky has unlock codes then others should too.
I have the direct number for someone who did have unlock codes so I'll reach out to him and see if he has any..prices are a lot lower..
There are still some decent ROMs for the P20 Pro, AOSIP, Lineage.
Which is more than enough for most people..
No idea what this would mean if you went to EMUI 10 though..
The chap I have seen says they haven't got codes so I would not recommend paying anything
He has said that they have had a lot of luck with unlocking the bootloader via a tool.
Here's the number

@dladz is that person offering bootloader unlocks currently? Are you saying they are the ones with the tool or FunkyHuawei?

I just bought an xfinity locked note 10+ off ebay and was looking to get it unlocked, trouble is I've never done this before so I was wondering if I could do it myself or pay someone to do it for me (I did look online for a few services but they were ~70 dollars which seems a little pricey). Any tips on how to do this?

I can't, returns are not accepted. I just want to find a way to enter the sim unlock code.
Talk the the bank of the card the purchase was made on to have them do a charge back. Then return it. The imei could end up being blacklisted otherwise depending on its history.
i did hear that it is possible to unlock it so i wanted to try that first before returning it.

Why? There are plenty of available N10+'s that don't have that liability.
Don't reward bad business practices... or make their liability yours.
