[Q] Android license issue custom ROM - General Questions and Answers

hi all
We are planning to launch a car android device with pure android custom rom. Does android licensing rules apply to custom roms? Is Android compatibility test required? I don't intend to use android or google logo anywhere in the product. I understand that to use Google play Service, separate license is required. Anyone with any idea please throw some light.

Android Market - There is no device

This was their response to my questions related to the Viewsonic G-Tablet:
----------------------------------------
Hi,
Thank you for your reply. After further research, according to our records, the device that you are using is not supported for use with Android Market at this time.
The Android operating system is open source, which means that any device manufacturer is free to use Android on its devices. However, Android Market is an application created by Google that is only made available to devices that pass Google’s compatibility requirements. In addition, manufacturers must obtain a license from Google in order to install Android Market on their devices.
For more information about the Android Compatibility Program, please visit source.android.com/compatibility/index.html
If you have any further questions, I recommend contacting the manufacturer of your device directly.
If I can assist you further, please let me know.
Regards,
Jenna

What did you ask and did you really expect support on an unsupported device?
Sorta like taking a netbook with snow leopard to the genius bar and asking for help with iTunes.

Wow.. you found this site, you found this forum, and you missed the million different posts for Market Fix, Full Android Market, etc...
You need to do some work to get the market working on the GTab. Out of the box it's not supported. It's likely never going to be officially supported unless by some miracle we get a honeycomb update from Viewsonic.
In the meantime, it is pretty easy to get access. Just don't ask Google for help doing it.
And, there's always the Amazon market, which works just swell...

Google's opinion about GApps ? Is it legal ?

Hi all.
As I recently unlocked my smartphone and installed a custom ROM, I was wondering what were Google position about GApps. I read some quick news online about this but there's nothing clear. To me it's not "piracy" or "hacking" as most of us don't modify their apps. Actually I think we really enjoy Google's services and this is why we need those packages.
My point is we're customers of Google even we make some changes on our devices. As far as I know, this company is more or less in an "open source mood". Do you guys know if there's (somewhere) an official response to this ?
Thanks. :good:

Best phone for android app development

I'm currently developing an android app that needs to communicate with a device over Bluetooth, so using the emulator is out of the question.
What is the best android device to buy for testing/development, if you don't have any specific recommendations what are the things to look out for? Coming from the iOS world here.
Any help would be appreciated

Any device will do the job, there is no need to use a specific device. Apps are apps and they work on all phones, provided that the app is compatible with the android version on the device. Some apps require at least a certain version of android but that should not be an issue as long as you are using a relatively recently released device and if you are working with current android versions.

[CLOSED] Voice only interface on Android 12

Hello all,
Android 12 makes building a voice only interface tough. The user has to click the phone call button after I trigger the intent action. Does anyone know work arounds to this? I'm considering modifying my own ROM, but I wouldn't know where to start. My first place to look is PackageManager and ActivityManager. I might try and delete some of the safeguards. I am not making a mass market app, I'd like to modify the software then sell the hardware with my mod'd software on it to someone. I just want to make android run like alexa with some sauce, not trying to listen in unless the user wakes up the phone.
Thanks!
