Is this watch good for exercises? - Sony Smartwatch

I use it with Endomondo widget and it works fine but... if you keep their widget alive it sucks the battery of the watch :what:

Phone widget or watch widget? I'm not aware of one for the watch.

Watch widget. Originally it is for SW1 but it works on the 2

Could you link to that app?

Can't find it. Try to install Endomondo on your phone maybe it'll give you a hint.

Aha, yes that's the Endomondo app that is installed when you have Endomondo on your phone.
I haven't seen any way to keep that running on the watch though, i.e. there is no 'low power mode' or similar, the watch just goes back to the watch face after a few seconds. So I haven't noticed any great power loss from it.

Mine stays alive when I use it but no low-power mode so I easily loose 15% battery when I walk for an hour or so.

I'm using Runtastic and it's pretty sweet. Most intended for runner tought and it doesn't have a powersaver mode, so you have to open the watch to get your info. Kind of a hassle but I'm using voice feedback also, so best of both words.
I'm using the chrono / stopwatch also for training (intervals) and it works well.
One thing, if you sweat a lot, put an sweat wristbands between the watch and my arm so that most of the sweat is taken care of.

Thanks for the responses, but does the watch it self track movement or do I have to attach my phone with arm band.
Sent from my SM-G900T using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

With Endo the watch just reflects what your phone is registering. Endo is activated on the phone when you launch the widget on the watch.
The watch only uses its own movement capture to light up when you shake it or tap.

I also use Runtastic with my watch and enjoy it a bit. Once they add low-power mode so I can glance down and see my progress without hitting the power button, I'll enjoy it a lot more.

Hello. I am thinking of buying the SmartWatch 2, and i had a couple of questions that maybe you could answer for me.
If i want to use a Fitness app, as Runtastic or Endomondo, do i have to also have my smartphone on me? I have a Galaxy Note 3 and the truth is that i dont like to carry it with me when i go running? (if i had to have it on me, i wouldnt need a smartwatch to record my running data, i would use my smartphone)
Also, what is the internal storage of the Smartwatch 2? Can i save mp3s or other data on it?
Also, can i connect a set bluetooth headphones on it, and listen to music or recordings from it (i know it doesnt record voice) ? Again, i would like to know if i can do any of the above WITHOUT the use of my smartphone.
Thanks in advance for any answers.

Basically no to your questions! Consider the smartwatch 2 as a second screen for your phone. It is not a standalone device in any way, apart from basic functions.
It isn't an mp3 player, it doesn't incorporate gps, it is simply an extension of your phone.

Thanks for your answer Alex!
Well if that's the case, i think that the device is quite disappointing. At least as a fitness partner. Why would i buy a device to help me with my fitness routine, if i still have to carry my 500€ Note 3, and more importantly if my smartphone is really the device doing all the work?
I wsa really hoping for the watch to be able to function as a standalone fitness device, with apps as Runtastic. That's a shame...

Yep, that's not what the smartwatch 2 is aimed at. I think it's an amazing device, particularly with the latest update. But it isn't the device you're looking for!

I did a small search and i think Motorola Motoactv is a great solution. It is quite old, but to me it seems perfect. GPS, Pedometer, built in Heart Rate monitor, Radio and an 8GB internal storage on which you can store (and listen) mp3s.

well i can talk only with my experience.
first of all i bought it because i need a good tool to pass through tracks in spotify without having to take out of the trausers and open the phone each time.
Then i also bought it coz i can't be all the day looking at my phone. with it i can just see which whatsapp notifications are important enough to answer.
when i had it i noticed that it also have twitter but i dt use it a lot.
the other apps for me are not very important.
hope that this small "review" helped somehow

If you use Instant Messaging and Social apps, these are perfect.
Since you will always wear it(I assume), it will push to you notifications you would need.
There are also apps made for it(GPS Map, Calendar, Sports Trackers, etc.) that makes it better.
Can we have heart rate monitoring with the watch (with or without an ant+ band?)
I won mine at the XDA Devcon in Miami. I love it. I was missing calls from being away from my desk and the phone on silent. Now I don't. It rocks.

The best Feature is the GPS Map
Actually I would not leave the house without this clock!
So I am new here, however, I have been thinking of the idea of a smart watch or band, " the quotes, or in thought of...
But seems more lately watches are a thing of the past like in the movie apprenticeship, more people use their phones for checking time or setting alarms,
I do like the nfc enable features I.E phone music streaming, media playback, pedometer, so on, is Sony the brand to go with in that aspect?

New SW2 update with missing features

So Sony finally updated the smartwatch today.
Long awaited features:
+ new watchfaces (digital with date)
+ light sensor adjustable back light
+ stop watch app
Maybe even more under the bonnet. It's starting to get better.
A new release of Camera Smart extension is now also available on Play Store:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sonymobile.extras.liveware.extension.camera
Also new update for Music Player Smart extension:

Same. Saw a big white bar on the screen for about 30 seconds then it rebooted and it's got the new stuff on it.
Interestingly the camera smart extension is now incompatible with all my devices. Wasn't before but used to crash like a woman driver.

I have received the update also, completely automatic. The new watchfaces are ok, i have now the date and digital clock displayed in stand-by.
Trimis de pe Galaxy Note 2
Why did they make the date so small? Could have made it all bigger and used more of the space... Never satisfied!
I have to agree with you. It is just too small. Why is it so difficult to be a bit more thoughtful. Make it bigger and use the screen properly. But at least I have to give them credit. They are at least trying to improve the watch. Good job SONY keep up the good work.
Sent from my HTC One SV using xda app-developers app
Ya same here me too ... my only gripe is that they could have at least make the digital clock and the dates bigger. I don't mind if day and month not displayed, as long as there is date. And it never occurred to them to make a retro digital watchface like during the heydays of Casio in the early 90's. That would have made the SW2 more cooler.
everything is great with this update, maybe new watchfaces should be replaceable but...
email extension doesn't work now. It says that app is not supported on this device. any tip how back this app to life?

The update is automatic only if you have your phone set to allow automatic update of applications as it comes as an updated SW2 app on the phone. Just wanted to make sure people who have the Play Store set for manual app updates aren't waiting for an automatic update of their smartwatch.

Does anyone know of any apps taking advantage of the pedometer hardware in the nexus 5 yet? I'm currently using noom walk but it's not massively accurate.

have you seen this?
its very simple compared to the "big guys" apps..
http://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus5/comments/1rcd17/need_beta_testers_for_lightweight_pedometer_app/
Here's one that users the hardware step counter on the N5, it has a nice ui and has achievements etc too
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.j4velin.pedometer
Data collected by Moves can be exported to a variety of connected apps to track fitness over time, visualize travels, etc.
The AIRS ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.airs) recording app recently added the pedometer as a dedicated sensor. It's not specifically focussing on step counting only but more generally on lifelogging. Its companion app Storica ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.storica) lets you view your daily step count, among all the other data you collected on your phone.
hope google develop its Now activity card better with pedometer data
I'm currently using moves app as a pedometer. It is nice looking and good app but consumes way too much battery. At the same time it feels stupid that both moves and google now are tracking my path. Hope moves developers gives options for phones with hardware step counters to turn off tracking path when there is no need for their own algorithms to detect steps but I'm not holding my breath because it is clearly big part of that app's user experience what they want to offer.
So my second thought is that now when android 4.4 and hopefully more devices with hardware step counters will come to market google should develop google nows activity card better. I don't see any point in that card currently only showing once a month. Hope they will develop it more in the way like moves is currently. Google now already tracks the path like moves and now with pedometer they should count steps and give chance to user select how often they want to see that activity card. I think they should give a option to show daily activity card with path, steps, distance and walking/cycling/running time like moves do. Maybe even burned calories.

Anyone been able to get the Virgin anywhere app to work

Yea i ment the app the actual name is virgin tv anywhere too, thought that would be obvious to anyone who actually has it.
I've also read that it's available for the Z1 but it's not appearing in the play store for me? Not 100% as to why but it's hidden.
Perhaps my device is reported as something else other than the Z1, I do have play store fixes on my phone via xposed but I have turned that off and tried again to no avail.
So anyone who's got it on their z1 and has it working, can you share as to how please?
Cheers.

Nope i'm on EE, but don't buy direct from a carrier as you most likely won't be able to unlock the bootloader, i found that out the hard way, ended up sending it off for repair when i bricked it, but sent it via a third party and got back an unlockable phone.
You don't want to go down that road m8.
So on the Nexus 4 you were able to use the app by doing what exactly? Removing root from within the superuser app itself??
PS: In all fairness the Z1 is a great phone but if you are looking to buy then hold fire and get something else in a few months, theres some pretty beefy phones on the way, the HTC One (2) will be a winner.
Actually now that I think about it, in selected the option to perm unroot the phone so not ideal..... Although with nexus 4 I just had to reflash supersu from recovery to get it back. Not ideal.
As for my next phone, I'm giving up on HTC after 4 previous phone, I got fed up of sense.
Of course the z2 will be announced later this month so I might hold off and see....

Nah m8, HTC Sense is by far and away the best UI there is, it just works and is functional to perfection.
Only went with the Z1 as on paper it was great, i've had my ups and downs with it and it's been ok as of late.
I do miss some HTC features though.
I'm using the Nexus 5 launcher too so besides the camera and stock apps theres very little left from stock.
As for the Virgin app not working, i could remove root but any time i decide to mess with my phone i always end up having to redo the whole thing. The maker of rootcloak has recognised that the virgin app doesn't work and is most likely working on a fix, so hopefully at some point it'll be functional, more and more people will want to use the app as it's a great thing to have on your phone, being rooted simply shouldn't be an issue and Virgin are a55holes for making it an issue just because the powers that be have told them to.

Unfortunately Virgin are no different to Sky etc - the content providers insist on protecting from root, otherwise they won't licence the channels. No point in blaming Virgin really, the industry is the issue. The irony of course is that on PCs/Macs it's much easier to rip streams than a tablet/phone so why the restrictions on mobile devices when laptops etc are a greater risk is beyond me.
However, good news is that the latest version of TV Anywhere (downloaded today from Play store) which is now compatible with 4.4 seems to work with Rootcloak - I just tried it on my Nexus 10 (not tried my Z1 yet but not so bothered about use on phone) and it asks for superuser (which I denied) and even though I get a toast message from SuperUser (saying 'denied') it gets through and streams channels
Not sure if they realise and will fix that in a later version, but will definitely be backing up this version's .apk

Ah cheers for letting me know m8, that's some good news at least, I only wanted it to work as it's available and i already pay for the XXL package with virgin so may as well get something out of them, i'm putting an AOSP rom on my phone later on today so will check out the app again, i've got root cloak so i'm good to go, just need to reflash my phone, just out of interest do you have the paid or free version of rootcloak?
Cheers m8.
Just the free one, I've only recently started to explore xposed modules

Can Gear S3 show phone state of charge?

I can use the Gear App on my S7 Edge to see the watch battery state. Can I use the watch to see the phone battery state?
After all, the phone is usually on my wrist, where I can see the watch battery level. The phone is in a zipped up pocket, often under a heavy waxed jacket.
I use the Glympse app on the S7 to broadcast my location when walking "off-piste" in forests. If the phone battery gets low, I can switch Glympse into low energy mode, but that means fishing around in my outdoor gear to get to the phone in a zipped up trouser pocket.

I think it depends on the watch face if Iv not mistaken...

There is a glimpse app for the watch you could use.

Ah... I love the default watch face on the S3, and wouldn't want to change it. I first saw it on an advertisement on the back of the Christmas edition of the New Scientist magazine. I almost bought an S3 on the spot. (but had to wait a few weeks for funds)
Perhaps I need an app on the S7 to send audible warnings as the battery level drops.
There are dozens of watch faces that show the phone's battery state.

Yeah lots of faces but they dont update very regulary... like my watch is still showing my phone as having 35 percent battery but its at 63 right now... so dont know why it doesny update that well..

I've noticed that with the watchmaster faces. I have noticed though that the faces I've tried seem to take a lot more of my battery life.

Iv been using Facer....not tried watchmaster... will give it a shot...i actually charge watch everyday...but my shealth and sleep tracking is also on...though the display is set to motion..

It's a little self defeating if the watch faces depletes my battery while I'm looking to see if I need to worry about my battery state.
Ah, but perhaps it's the watch battery that gets depleted?
I think I'll just get used to looking at the phone, but in the meantime I've installed Battery Notifier Pro on the phone so I get notifications when the battery is down to 25%
I just need to see if I can get the notifications from Battery Notifier Pro to show/sound on the watch.
Any good apps worth downloading? Since I dont have uber or spotify and everytime I need to download from US market remove sim reset apps etc etc its a pain... so if anyone suggests apps ill just write em all down an do it once...

Watchmaster is still under review in Samsung Store so the only way to load it on the phone is by building the Watchmaker app in Tizen Studio and pushing it to the phone, all in all a small pain in the butt. I've noticed that on any of the Watchmaster faces my watch face usage is over 30% of my battery usage. There are many more faces available than with Facer but at a cost. I've found the best all around way to get faces is on Google+ in the Watch Face Pros community. All those are GWD faces easily loaded with Gear Watch Designer.

Couldn't you just load up a VPN and log in to Samsung Store with a US IP?

You will need a Samsung Account ID to get an author and distributor certificate before you can build one of the downloaded watch faces. Both certificates can be obtained from with GWD and are free. Make sure you use a password for the certificates you can remember because you need it entered into GWD when you build a project. You can also copy the two certificates into the GWD directory to make it easier for GWD to find them.
After you get those, just download a watch face, change the extension of the downloaded face from .zip to .gwd, load the project in GWD, build it, and run it on the phone, all from within GWD. There are pretty good directions online. Also remember to have your watch wifi set to always on and debugging turned on in the watch. If you don't do that, then GWD can't find the watch.
EDIT
LOL, forget everything I said when mentioning Watchmaster, I meant Watchmaker. My auto correct was changing it every time and I didn't notice.

You're welcome. You can edit some of the colors on those faces like the digital display color.

WatchMaker is coming to Gear in a week or so - there will be many new faces available and developers will create new ones, so options are going to expand.
