looking to purchase the One m8, and most of the unlocked ones on ebay are verizon.
I see the boot loader is locked, any hope for that or should i look for a developer edition one ?

I am from Brazil and i need an unlocked version.

The Dev editions phones won't work on Verizon. If you're a VZW customer, you don't have a choice. As far as the bootloader, there's always hope.

Why would you buy a phone from an American carrier if you live in Brazil? Just order the Unlocked or Dev Version from HTC directly.

Yeah, if the Dev edition one works on your carrier there, I would go with that. Verizon's M8 is SIM unlocked, but it's S-On'd.

Can't hurt to check on Swappa, Ebay, etc. There may be some dev editions devices available (though it's not likely being so soon after release).
Ordered the dev version! Thanks all.

Yes. They're not even remotely the same phone. Some s/w components are common and devs might be able to re-use them but the radio, kernel, and graphics drivers are all totally different.
P.S. - Skip the fun fonts next time.

The international version is HSPA/HSPA+ and not sold in the North America. The LTE version is the One XL even though Rogers and AT&T dropped the "L" and is, for now, only being sold in Asia (including Australia) and North America and only through carriers in those countries that have LTE networks.
Here's a description of both phones from the HTC Asia site:

Right now, the bootloader on the AT&T One X(L) isn't unlocked. Development can't really occur until that happens. The Rogers One X(L) is unlocked so there are some ROMs available for it. So if you have an AT&T device, keep checking the development forum for ROMs specific to your phone. And if you're not sure, ask in that ROM's thread before even attempting to install it. It's fun to experiment but being too adventurous will ultimately brick your phone.
Also, assuming the repair policy is the same in the U.S. as it is in the EU, unlocking the bootloader and installing custom ROMs will completely void your warranty. Just unlocking and rooting won't. So you may want to get some clarification once the AT&T device's bootloader is unlocked before you move forward.

Thanks and yea I hope they unlock the bootloader soon. But the thing I don't get is why they already have a few roms already when the bootloader is still locked. Does anyone know when it'll be unlocked?
I am looking into picking me up a new one x . Does this mean I should look into buying a bell version of one x if I want to put custom roms? I will buy off contract.

They make you select a carrier before checkout. The carrier unlocked version will be released in a month.
Just pick Verizon and it will be unlocked for sure day one
Ok cool that's what I was wondering. I know it's that way with my iPhone 7 I didn't know if it'd be the same for android
The simple way is to order from B&H... It's the unlocked international model SM-955F.... $840 + local tax
While that would be nice I'll be using the Samsung financing

But are we sure that the hardware is the same for all US models and it is as simple as flashing the appropriate firmware to get them working on other carriers?
Also, if you buy the Verizon model, it will never work on Sprint since Sprint won't whitelist it.

If you are on Sprint and you buy any other model but Sprint's model, it will not work on Sprint because Sprint won't whitelist it.
If you buy Verizon's model, it will be unlocked out of the box and if it is like the S7/7E, you can flash the GSM carrier's firmware to it and use it on the GSM carriers. But it will never work on Sprint for the reasons I stated.

It's not the same at all. With the iPhone 7, it has the firmware to run on all 4 networks. That has never been true of the Samsung androids. They only have the firmware to run on the particular carrier they are branded for.
Although the Verizon S7/7E is SIM unlocked, it won't work properly on the GSM carriers without flashing the firmware for the GSM carriers. We won't know whether you can do that for the S8/8+ until they are released. However, the Verizon model will never work on Sprint because Sprint will not whitelist the Verizon model. In contrast, Sprint will whitelist the Verizon iPhones since they have the firmware to run on all 4 carriers.
It's totally different with iPhones than with Androids.
Thanks for.clearing.everything up. I have verizon so I will be getting a verizon phone. Just wasnt sure if I would be able to switch carriers in the future

No chance any international phone will ever be whitelisted by sprint. You have the hardest carrier to use unlocked GSM phones with. Sprint is CDMA and has a system of adding only the phones it will allow into its network

^ This. This is also why most of the phone reviewers, in the US anyway, have either AT&T or T-Mobile, as they're both use GSM. All unlocked phones sold in the international market are GSM, so you can basically plop in your SIM and you're good to go.
Verizon and Sprint are much trickier as they both use CDMA, which unless I'm mistaken, it's only in the US market. And with their whitelist system, even if you have the correct bands for their networks, it still might not work.
Lol that sucks being that I'm with Verizon. Ah well no root and roms. As long as it works great factory I guess I'll be okay.

Yes and it won't work on Sprint or Verizon.
If you get the unlocked version from HTC's website, does it support Sprint, or will they have different radios? I tweeted HTC and they said that the unlocked version will NOT support Sprint.... But if you look on there website at the radios then I don't see an issue, they are the same as the unlocked version.
Here is a link to the website for the radios.
http://www.htc.com/us/smartphones/htc-u11/buy/#!color=black
And the unlocked radios:
http://www.htc.com/us/go/htc-u11-unlocked/
I also asked if I were to get the Sprint version would that support all other carriers (ie. AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon), I did not get a response from HTC.
I will say this would be absolutely ridiculous if the Sprint version is dumb down and doesn't support the rest of the world. I honestly would think about switching if this were the case. I just want to be on a GSM carrier that I don't have to worry about "if my phone will work" on this network. Annoying.
BTW I say this because I travel a lot, so having 1 phone that works everywhere would be the best thing in the world.

out of the box, the Unlocked ROM would not support Sprint, but the hardware is the same between the unlocked & sprint, so technically you could flash the Sprint ROM on the unlocked model. The problem is the unlocked IMEI would not be whitelisted. As far as the Sprint model supporting the GSM carriers...yes it would, provided the sim was unlocked...or you could flash the unlocked ROM.

OMFG THANK YOU! This makes way more sense now. I have been all over the Internet looking for an answer. Well at least I know the actual hardware is the same.
I feel like having to deal with hoping that Sprint will support the unlocked devices IMEI wpuld be worse then buying the Sprint flavor.
So I have 2 easy options then.
1. Buy it from Sprint at full price and do not extend my contact. Then have them unlock it which they can't say no to if I have no obligation to them.
2. Buy it from HTC but in the Sprint version. But I have to figure out if it is unlocked. I think it is. It looks like it is on there website.
Man I hate how buying phones and carrier plans work in the US. I wish we would go to an overseas model, and almost every phone is unlocked. Then you just decided what service you want yourself. So easy to just walk in a store and get service with whatever phone you want.

Ya I was thinking the same thing. But its weird on HTC's website if you select the Sprint version it doesn't have the color black. But if you go to sprint they do..... facepalm.
Also I spoke with Sprint yesterday to see if they would tell me if the unlocked one works, and they refused to even check. They wanted the MEID of the device, which I don't have, and I told them I don't have it until I buy the phone online and have it shipped to me. So this is annoying.
Also I just ran across this article on Android Central that the Verizon version dose not have CDMA radios. Now that makes me wonder about the Sprint version.

My 6t was unlockable. Don't think they will lock it down. But don't buy the us versions, the us locks down bootloader ex Samsung phones just like the T-Mobile 6t. If you buy the international varient, should be unlockable

I think better said is don't buy carrier versions. The unlockable bootloader is still a big selling point to its OP's core audience.
Don't want a locked BL. Don't buy from a carrier.

Not exactly true I'm running the TMobile variant 6T just rebranded to OOS to unlock the bootloader. But if it's anything like the T-Mobile 6T as long as you can get the phone Sim unlocked you can bootloader unlock it
I'm aware of the tool that came out. Who wants to do all that?

If I where you, I think i would just get the international one to avoid carrier related lockdowns.
I'm sure that the developers here will attempt the same process with T-Mobile's 7 pro like was done with the T-Mobile's 6T and try to find a way to unlock the bootloader. Me personally, I was so content with T-Mobile's version that I stayed away from the section for a few months.
When ordering on the canadian site, will that version be bootloader unlockable?
I unlocked my 6T after talking with reps. They agreed to unlock my SIM after I made two installments, for a total of around $83, only a couple weeks after getting my phone. It was well worth it, and went towards the phone, anyway!
Tmo unlocked mine for nothing. I have been a customer for 13 years

Nice! I'm a 10-year customer. T-Mobile has been great to me over the years
I wonder if unlocking BL/flashing custom ROMs will mess up Widevine like what I read about for previous OnePlus devices...
