Polarized sunglasses - Verizon HTC One (M8)

Trying looking at your screen with polarized sunglasses on. . Weird. . First phone to do this for me. Can't see the screen. Ha.

That's unfortunate. All of my sunglasses are polarized...

I just tested it and it works like all the others. I can see the screen but it gives it almost a 3D effect. I am testing with a pair of Revo's and Maui Jim and both worked for me just fine.

It was like this on my LG G2 and I believe the S3 & S4 as well but I do confirm that the screen is not blank. That scared me.

Just tested with both of my pairs of maui jims. Screen looked fine in every orientation.

It just looks really dim for me as opposed to regular sun glasses.

Ah, good, its not just me.
For a brief moment, I thought my phone wasn't turning on until I realized it was on, but black with the sunglasses on.
My DNA wasn't like this.
Not a problem really, just something to get used to.

Weird, my phones (Droid X and Galaxy Nexus) have always looked much darker when I had my sunglasses on. I'm just used to having to take them off if I want to use my phone.

Delete

polarized glasses will make most displays look dark or black. I can tilt my head different directions and see the display but still not easily.

I can see mine but it's multi-colored and really dark. FWIW, my Razr Maxx did the same thing. Had to take the glasses off to see it decently too.

Almost 3d you say? What if you layer on a pair of 3D glasses over your sunglasses. Does that give you complete 3D?

I have a pair of Serengetti's, and it's like the polarisation is rotated 90 degrees. Looking at the phone in portrait (as one should) its pretty much black, going to landscape the screen is fully visible. What the actually hell is going on HTC! I'm from Australia, it's not like we don't have the kind of weather that allows us to go without sunnies =S

I've posted this in other threads, but it seems HTC used different screens on the M8's. My wife and I got ours at the same time, and on hers the display might as well be turned off in portrait orientation while wearing our Maui Jims, while mine is fine in both orientations.

There already is a layer of a polarizing film in the lcd... That's why it's like this.

I have the vzw Galaxy Nexus, and for me portrait looks fine, landscape looks a bit dimmer, but halfway rotated between either of them, and my display looks off.
I'm wondering if this has to do with the orientation of the polarizing film in the screen, though why the orientation would change from phone to phone i have no idea....

No problems here with my Oakleys.

official htc one x love in thread.

There's been some negativity around here lately. I'm guilty of spreading some of it. So here's a thread for us to say something good about the HOX.
Here's mine. I'm sitting here on the beach composing this thread and I can see the screen just fine. This phone has the best screen of any device that I have ever had.
I put my sunglasses on and couldn't see my ipad screen in portrait mode.
Next.
Even though it's not made out of anodized aluminum like my old nokia n8, this phone is built like a tank...but an elegant tank (oxymoron?). It's one of the most visually appealing devices I've had and feels great in the hand. Also as gunny mentioned the screen is ridiculous, best on the market IMHO. Lastly and probably most importantly for me, the battery. On AOKP 6.2 I'm easily getting 2 days with light to moderate use. Right now the One X is the perfect phone for me.
Love everything about this phone. Brightest screen i've ever seen, even on 30% brightness. Camera sensor in the HOX beats out my point and shoot, even the DSLR that my dad uses for his shots. Rugged as well, friend dropped his HOX several times on concrete and is still alive with minor scrapes along the frame. The fact that I can laugh at my iPhone counterparts that their ENTIRE phone is my screen, they feel inadequate after that =).
Next.
This is my first android phone, I came from and iPhone 4, and what a difference! I love the huge screen, and the quality is amazing, nothing beats it. I can actually use the phone in sunlight with sunglasses on!! It is also blazing fast, from unlock to taking a picture is under 10 seconds. The same thing would have taken at least 20 before.
Oh and the design, best looking phone out there today, Period.

I still find myself taking off my ballistic case just to stare at the beauty of the phone.
Performance is as good as I need it to be and development is plenty IMO. We're not overflowing with support but we have some of the best developers and all the major roms are already available.
We just need some more kernel sexiness.
I came to this phone from the HTC Amaze and my god is it beautiful. I feel guilty of even putting a transparent case on it because of how good it looks and feels. I also love the camera of this phone which provides absoloutly stunning pictures. In addition, like everyone else here I too am in love with the screen.

I dropped it on tile floor from 5 ft and it didn't get ONE scratch. I also accidentally pulled it half apart because my case sucks and it still is fine

Yep. I don't know why people are complaining about development (*cough*gunny*cough*). We have plenty of top quality ROMs and AOSP is kicking off nicely. All I really care about is that there is one ROM that I like, and there is, so I'm happy. Of course that ROM is CleanROM. So you take what is easily the worlds sexiest design for a cell phone, toss in the amazing processing power of the S4, add to it the best Sense ROM I've ever run, and you get my One X, which is easily the best phone I've ever owned. Completely renewed my love affair with Android, something that only the OG EVO 4G was able to do before.
I gave up on cases and went straight to white carbon fiber ghost armor. So sexy.

I haven't complained about development at all. We have some great devs and some awesome work from them. My concern is, and I think it's valid, unless we get sanctioned Bootloader unlock from ATT/HTC we're screwed. Having to chase down an exploit every time we get an update is a royal pain in the ass.
Anyhow, back on topic.
This is the phone that made me leave my Nexus One behind. Honestly, until now, I haven't wanted a new phone. Despite being stuck on unrooted 2.2, the UI is very smooth, the devs have done some great work for it considering how limited they've been due to source, and the camera on this phone is sexy as hell.
I love my HOX and the devs here at XDA!
The screen is phenomenal. I don't think there's a screen that can compare right now except for maybe the evo lte. I've never seen a phone with such a beautiful screen.

H1X is a bad ass. The only "issue" I ever had with it is the multitasking.... everything else is peoples preference. The OneX is probably one of the nicest phones ever made....right under the SGSII....which is still the love of my life....but the OneX is right there with it....and to me that is saying a lot.

And you can see it in landscape? Sunglasses are polarized?
LCDs use a polarizing film to display the screen images. So the light coming from the LCD is polarized in one direction. If the polarization of your sunglasses are polarized a certain way (opposite, I suppose?) then no light from the display will get through your sunglasses, and the display will appear blank. But don't know why the One X is mostly immune to this. When viewed with polarized sunglasses on, I can still see the One X screen, but some of the colors seem "off". Like there is some polarization effect happening, but not enough to make the whole screen invisible.
Had my hox since pre release on May 4th and never looked back or regretted my descision and not one return or exchange. I love the look of this phone I struggled for months to even put a case on it but since I won one (thanks to metal head) I have started to but still damn sexy. The screen is just beautiful even on the brightest days. Coming from the aria where development was low but high quality the development here is top notch and a nice mix of rom options. Last the hox community here on xda is fantastic everyone helps and for the most are quite nice. Honestly I couldn't be happier with my hox.

a breath a fresh air from seemingly countless complaint threads.
3 months with the One X and it never leaves my side. It totally replaced my point and shoot (which was crap anyway), not big on photography but the One X is amazing for what it is. and very durable. i bought cases but never use them, i end up taking them off at the end of the day. and this thing has weathered through many beach trips without a single scratch (sand in the pockets are a silent killer.)

The black levels...

They're not at all awesome!
I'm coming from a Galaxy Nexus (Amoled display) which has close to perfect black levels, and a ASUS Transformer (IPS display) which while it wasn't to brag about, it was better than the Galaxy Note 10.1's screen.
I was really looking forward to the PLS display on the Note, I heard nothing but great reviews on the tech, but this is really bad.
I mean the blacks aren't even even, its more purple than black.
Is this normal for PLS?
Is anyone else having this issue?
Were there any mods that can be done that fix this issue on other Samsung PLS tablets?
I don't see anything wrong with the black level but I haven't tried using the tablet in the dark yet. Don't compare AMOLED with LCD. LCD will always have ****ty black because of the backlight. The only LCD type I know that has decent black level is CPVA but it's not used in tablets and it's still far from perfect. Asus Transformer TF101 has much worse black level (I have both). Are you talkin about some newer Transformer? Or maybe your brightness is set too high?
Also keep in mind that a lot of websites don't use pure black fonts.
Try turning the display mode up to vibrant and reducing the the brightness.

if he's referring to the infinity, it's got a very annoying dynamic contrast. the screen dims and brightens as the screen changes, but it's not very discreet at doing so. my main reason for rooting the tf700 was to disable this stupid feature.
I'm sure I'm missing aomething, but I have a decent sum tied up in a plasma and HT equipment to get blacks close to right at home, so am always amazed to see people moan about black levela on $500 mobile device. I'm still amazed I can watch pretty hifh quality movies and even live tv on a mobile device like this, and just cant imagime being worried about blacks unless just atrocious. Am I expecting too little froma device like this?
I was referring to the tf101, but I went to best buy again and compared it to the demo model and realized mine was completely off.
So I TiB backed it up, flash that bad boy back to stock and exchanged it. This new screen is way better.
Although the viewing angles aren't amazing its still an awesome tablet.
Yeah, the viewing angles are the only disappointment for me.

Some are pretty bad like the iPad3 where if you're not directly front and center there is significant brightness fall off.

[Q] Viewing Angles

What are your screen viewing angles like? Mine seems to be quite poor, it washes out off centre quite a lot. Im wondering if I have a bad unit or if its just normal for the N5.
Looks good to me. Haven't received mine so I don't know if it's a bad unit.

Not compared to what im used to it isnt. My last few devices have been AMOLED screens (no comparing to these, just a comment) or the HTC One LCD3 which has perfect viewing angles with no changes to the screen at any angles at all. Its somewhat worse than my Nexus 10.

That's normal for LCD, that's called backlight. Nothing faulty here. I also own the HTC One and it has the same effect as well when you tilt the screen.
EDIT: I see what you mean now, when tilting the screen exactly like you do (45 degrees vert/hor). It still is not a faulty unit, it's just that LG has less prevented the backlight from coming through. Maybe its because of the slim bevel. I have seen it on other LG devices before though.
To answer your question, I think it's normal for the N5 .

Well my HTC One doesnt change at all at any angle. The screen is perfect even if you look at it from the edge of the phone all colours and lighting are perfect!
Im fine with it if its normal for the N5, but if there are better units id prefer one of those.

I totally agree with you. But dude, it looks great in any way.It has also to do with brightness. Throttle your brightness slider all the way to right en your N5 has perfect viewing angle. Even with 90 degrees. I had the Z1 before the Nexus 5. I must say the Nexus 5 does a waaaay beter job than the Z1. So I ain't complaining right now.
Might be a personal thing. After all, everything looks beter than TFT(regarding viewing angles).

Yup. I spoiled myself since my first LCD monitor was an IPS screen so when I look at TN screens I can't stand them.
The poor viewing angles of my Nexus 4 has been one of my biggest gripes with the device. I popped into the carphone warehouse today to check the viewing angles of the Nexus 5 and from what I can see it suffers from the same problem Not as bad as the Z1 but not as good as devices like the HTC One from what I can see. Shame.
Getting my N5 today so i'll do some experimenting. my N4 has perfect viewing angles from anywhere. only very slight discoloration. nothing like OP's picture.

Camera screen goes dark in landscape?? SOLVED!

I read a lot on here and have not seen this mentioned. A few times lately, when using the camera outside, I've noticed that in portrait and with a normal view/screen if I tilt the phone over to landscape, the screen just fades to dark, as in practically black. Tilt the phone back up to portrait and the view fades right back to normal :silly::silly::silly: And if that don't weird me out enough, I can walk indoors and do it and it works just fine, both portrait and landscape!! I've tried stock and a 3rd party cam. app.........no difference. Currently on latest Cataclysm/stock kernel/4.4.1. Anybody experience this or heard of it??? Thanks in advance.......
running latest cataclysm (Dec 6) and I do not have that problem (just tried it using stock camera app).
Does it stay black in landscape or does it just adjust for the lighting?
I never held it in landscape and dark for more than 15 or 20 seconds, but it did not act like it was doing any light adjusting. Another baffling aspect of this is that it doesn't always do it. I've taken a dozen or more landscape shots just fine since I've had the phone (about 2 1/2 wks.). Oh well........
edit: Just tried it again, both indoors and out, and it's working fine now..............gremlin? possession? anybody know a good priest? lol. I'll pay close attention and see if I can come up with some more information.
Quick question just to check: Are you wearing polarized sunglasses outside? That may affect the screen since it is also polarized.

Interesting! But why it doesn't affect in portrait mode?
Hello, I don't get it. Where is the solution?
I mean, I was reading through all the comments and I only saw the cause of the problem, and apparently everybody is happy with it?!?
Well, I had a look further, and I have found an actual solution.
I just bought myself a cheap plastic transparent screencover, no more issues with the polarized glasses that made turn my smartphone black in landscape mode... and no... it wasn't a Nexus, so it might be considered as a general thing.

Ahhahaha lol... I had the same problem, a friend showing me something on his phone and not seeing anything, it took some minutes to realize my fishing glasses were the problem

Interesting! But why it doesn't affect in portrait mode?
I'm sure glad I found this discussion and Termic's solution most people would have never dreamed of. This has saved me tons of energy posting on the Microsoft Community user forum desperately looking for a solution. Termic's solution should be more widely posted to help other Lumia owners out of their misery in trying to solve this.
Why not in portrait mode is a good question. It seems the light spectrum coming from the Lumia's display in horizontal mode shifts enough to trigger the polarizing filtering of sunglasses. Just a guess.
This is very weird. I thought it was my phone.... I noticed it while using maps, tried to turn it sideways and put it in my dash clip and 5 seconds later, black screen. Turn back to portrait and it's fine.! Only had this happen today with the new phone I got last night, an LG Stylo 4, never happened with my previous phone a ZTE Blade Zmax. Maybe it's a display setting?

Outdoor screen visibility

For those who own the phone how is the screen in direct sunlight. I work outdoors and hate having to shade the phone to see the screen. I was pretty set on this phone until the article about the s5 having a great screen and has a ridiculously bright screen. I really wasn't thinking about the s5 until that article came out now i'm torn.....really want the build quality, speakers, and lightning fast camera shutter with no hardware home button. On the other hand I really need a screen that can give me the best outdoor performance.
I work outside all day and leave the brightness around 50 and can see it fine

If you have ever looked at an LED TV next to an LCD you'll know thats incredibly wrong. If you have a brightly lit room for a room with a lot of sunlight, you basically can't buy LCD. Its the same for phones, my friend has the m8 and i have a gs4, my phone looks 10x better than his outdoors.

My daughter seems to think her S4 lacks the brightness in direct sunlight that I have on my M8. Her face was frowning and drooling as she peered into the gorgeous Super LCD3 screen, which seemingly mocked the direct sunlight shining down upon it.

Depends on your luck with the device. There appears to be more than one screen manufacturer or something. My wife and I got our M8s at the same time, but while polarized sunglasses are not the slightest problem for me, with her phone the display vanishes in portrait orientation wearing them.

Yeah, I've looked at 6 different M8s with sun glasses on, some were hard to read and some were not. Which certainly leads one to think that there are different screen manufacturers, or coatings, or something. (most likely different screens though)
