Xperia Z2 waterproof IP55/58 - Android General

Hi
Xperia Z2 is waterproof and dust resistent (to grate extent)
Sony says it has IP55/58 rating.
What does it mean?
How the same phone can have two ratings IP55 and IP58
Or does it mean something else?
Also galaxy S5 has IP67 rating. So are these ratings better than those of Z2?
Thnaks in advance!!

well thats a good question which I would also like to know.
As far as the normal IP raitings go the first number should stand for the dust resistance and the second one for the resistance against liquids. Sooo why have 2 ratings?
The S5 has 67 wheras the 7 means (as far as i know) that the phone shall not be immersed into water over 1 meter.
8 should therefore be able to handle a little bit more. But 5 is way worse and does not allow immersion into the water...
So anybody know why the Z2 has got 2 ratings?

Waterproof Phone with changeable Battery?

Hi. Using my Motorola Defy for 4 years now, but its just slow, often rebooting, several apps aren't working correct on it... So searching for a new one with this functions:
Waterproof
Changable Battery
4 - 4.5 inch Display, not bigger
Android
Root and custom roms available
I guess I can find this in the Sony Xpera ZR but as its not available in germany I have to bought it from abroad which wo would be ~280€ ~ $380. Thats a lot for a one year old phone, compared with the price I paid for the Defy. Are there any other phones which have all the things I need?
Nobody can help me with this?

I dont believe your going to find a wateproof phone. There are water resistant phones, but water proof cases may be another option. Pretty much the high end phones like the s5, s4, m8, and many others have that option. Check them out.
I think xperia v is the one you looking for
here's the specs and regards of water proof and removable battery I'm pretty sure about the feature

samsung galaxy s5 is waterproof and have an changeable battery
Galaxy S5 is to big, I dont want such a big phone. The Xperia V is more what Im looking for. CPU is slow, that a pitty but at least it will be a lot faster than my Defy. Will try that phone :good:
try Lenovo S750

[Q] Which device is better. Moto G LTE or Xperia M2?

Hi! New here...
Well, I know this is "common", but, I have a dilemma about what device choice: Moto G - LTE version or Xperia M2 (not dual or aqua, just M2).
About all specs, I know it. Also I checked reviews between those two devices, but still I'm confused about what device choice.
Could you please help me out to choice? In two specific ways, camera and audio system. 'Cause, the rest of this is the same, processor, gpu, screen size is kinda different but I have no worry on this. The things are getting me worried is the camera and the audio system.
I will thank you all of you for the replies and personals opinions.
Regards!
I would take Moto G because of android updates and clean AOSP. Also Xperia M2 is very sensitive about scratches on it's back. Once I got my M2 I installed special protective layer on it.

Thanks for the reply.
I thought about the confirmed updates for Moto G (Android KK 4.4.4 and Android L), and the scratches, thing I read here before, but, about the technician specs, how does it work the camera? Is so ugly as the reviews says? Or, can it be acceptable? The audio is better than average or still round with the average devices?
Thanks again.
I use KK firmware and camera in my opinion is just good. It's not ugly or crapy.
Depends also on your requirements. It's not Nikon camera though
You should also take into account how well you can hold them, as well as battery time. Personally, the Moto G doesn't sit well in my hand at all. The M2 on the other hand, does. Battery time, M2 seems to be winning, probably because of the lower screen resolution.
As for audio system, according to GSMArena, the Moto G has less noise on the output. I don't notice the noise on my M2 with one pair of headphones, but it's quite audible with some in-ears.
The camera on the 4.3 firmware is bad, 4.4 fixes that. See for yourself.. M2 Aqua is just M2 with KK and water protection, so you can use it to compare 4.3 and 4.4 camera.
One more thing you might want to take into account is that the Moto G is more popular, so the dev scene is much bigger/more active.
I'm rather disappointed about that when it comes to the M2.

I have a Canon Réflex Camera, so I don't need an excelent camera, but, either way, the camera is one of the important things when you choose one smartphone or another one.

I checked now the difference between Moto G and Xperia M2 (4.4.2 KitKat Firmware), and, the difference is not too much (looking at Xperia M2 Aqua, which, as you say, is theorically the same as Xperia M2 with KK), so, the last thing is the Headphones and their noises. I'm still kinda worried about it.
But until now, I'm thinking about buy the Xperia M2.
Any comments or opinions? I will thank to you.
Regards!
An opinion from who had both. Also I already have newer ones Xperia like Z1 and ZQ; a model made from Z1 to Brazil. The M2 at the first moment seems a compact Z2, like the design, the place where buttons are. Weight is good for the size, also it is thin. I think Sony could do a 5inch screen cause there are too much bars arounding the lcd or if they cut, made more a compact device, like they did with ZQ, made it perfect and confortable. The LCD quality is ok, nothing really to be glad like others Xperia but for a mid from Sony i expected more ppi, it has almost less 100 compared to Moto G. Also the glass i didnt like, keeps too easy dust and fingers prints and it isnt too easy to clean. Camera resolution is awful, i wont comment about the VGA cause dont worth it, so i couldn believe that Sony done that, even that old mobiles like Xperia ARC, X10, they have a much better cam. Really dont understand why Sony made such a dummbie phone. The CPU is good, felt some laggys, nothing really bad but for a quad should make better operations. Volume sound is poor, even with headset, like the equalizer and the multiple options but unfortunatly these couldnt make sounds better. Finally battery isnt nothing especial, mine is with almost 18hours of good usage before a make a new charge cycle. Anyway, my opinions are based that already have the Moto G, a trully competitor and that made really good impressions.
I must really say, anyone claiming the volume is poor should visit a hearing specialist. I keep hearing those claims and to be honest the only thing that comes to mind is that people claiming that are half-deaf.

Thanks the two of you, in first place, for you replies and opinions.
Moto G still is better positioned than the Xperia M2 when it comes to sound system and everything related about that. And just one says that the sound is relatively poor. I don't think that Xperia M2 has that bad sound as you say (Personally talking), but, your opinions helps me to choice better. I'm still thinking about buy the Xperia, just because looks better for me (And testing the camera, thanks to the user that put here the url, by the way), and also I can hold it better than Moto G (I held it before, so).
Anyways, more opinions, it'll be better.
Thanks for everything :3
See ya ~
Edit: Could anyone confirm that the screen is so bad? As the user says, the dust is holding in the screen and also the fingerprints gets marked on it. So, is this totally true? Thanks.

I can't really say as I have put a screen protector on it the moment I got it. Same for the back side, btw. The back is not glass, or if it's glass, it's not scratch resistant and scratches easily.
The pixel density is more than enough, however. It's just that people chase after big numbers, so they keep increasing the resolution (and with it, the power drain) with each iteration. Nexus 7 2013 was getting praises for its 1280x800 7" screen back then, and the M2's screen has about the same pixel density.
I think Xperia devices have much better sound quality than other smartphones. I use Koss Porta Pro for music and the sound it very good.

Yep the screen always looks like the side window of your car after your toddler sat there for 30 minutes while eating a chocolate cookie.
There are however screen foils that have a coating which makes removing those smudges very easy. Look for one with 4H, so they it doesn't spoil so easily.

And i must really say that i still very impressed with people who comes here and dont respect opinions, people who doesnt even have a history here. Imagine what condition u r now cemetery caretaker.
aff
So, if I state my opinion, I'm not respecting yours? Is your opinion worth more just because you have more posts and thanks? I don't think so.
Guys! Please don't start a fight here. Everyone is helping me out to choice a better device. So, any opinion that you put right here is appreciated.
I don't have interest in disrepect your opinions or even "insult" it.
After reading all the comments, the screen is a trouble, but, solutionable by a protector on the screen. Personally I dislike those things, but, if it's recommended. I will do it.
I will take this phone, 'cause you don't claim too much, just one comment which I took note. Also, the difference between those devices (in my country, at prices, is null, though I have to pay much for Moto G LTE than Xperia M2).
Thanks again to everyone who commented in this topic, maybe if I have another question after I have the phone in my hands.
I don't discard any other comment. A little opinion may help much more.
Regards and don't fight.
PD: Different opinions makes this better to know the troubles and features of this two devices.
I'm not planning to fight, good to hear you decided to go with the M2. Seeing as Sony has released the sources for KK, maybe the development will pick up as well.
Ah, one more thing, there is no dust under my display after 3 months of pocket carrying. Might be a defective phone if that person has dust under theirs.
If you don't want dust getting under the glass, always put your M2 with speaker down, so the jack input is always on top.

[Q] Sony Xperia Z3 or Moto X? which one do you prefer?

I like stock android and moto features but it looks like the z3 is better when it comes to specs. which one do you prefer?
Z3 has much better battery life
I cant say iv used neither but i often wish my nexus 5 was water proof when im sitting in my Jacuzzi , and i have to admit iv damaged at least 2 phones with water damage in the last 5 years
considering the price of smartphones and how easy it is to water damage them id go for the z3. Also im a ps4 user which is the other reason id go for the z3 as you can hook it up to your ps4
Z3!
Z3! But I may be a little biased.

[Q] Z3 or Z2 or something else?

Hi,
I've been combing the Z3 & Z2 threads because I am looking for an upgrade to my Moto X 2013 (Which BTW, I love... super signal, great SoT of 6.5 hrs, great GPS, splashproof with no flaps) because I get about 2~3% of battery drain per hour with the phone just sitting on the side of my desk doing nothing.
So after looking at the GSM Arena Battery list, the Z3 looks to have the looks and the battery, so it was my main candidate, except for all the faults I keep reading about.
Here they are in no specific order:
1- Random battery drains
2- Sudden shattered glass syndrome
3- WiFi connections issues
4- Not so waterproof manufacturing issues
I am a bit scared to invest the kind of money this phone will require, so I have tried to look for alternatives that may meet the great specs of the Z3. Phones like the Z2 which doesn't seem to have so many issues as the Z3 (and let's not talk about the Z3c or the Z3a with the VGA front camera), the Galaxy S5 (I really don't want to, really), the soon to be released M4 Aqua, or the Honor 6.
Any feedback is appreciated, because right now, the Z3 for me is like Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde... some people vouch the phone is a tank and others claim the phone is possesed to fail. I don't want to play lottery when buying a phone, I just want a good phone with great battery.
I take complaints about phones here seriously, but try to not let it cloud my view too much. You're honestly on a site of 1% ers... the 1% of people who really get into mobile devices and modding, flashing etc... I have the Z3 6603 and I absolutely love it. I've not tested it for water proofing, but I don't have any issues with the phone bending in my pocket, poor battery etc... I do have some issues with Bluetooth, but it's not a Sony thing, it's an android thing.
I have owned a lot of phones, among those three Sony's, and really I can't say anything else compares quality wise.
There's no guarantee, this is technology and it can be applied to everything else you buy, and its all luck. Ignore the stupid negative threads, as mentioned they only make up a small percentage of the overall. That said, I would wait till z3 neo is announced then get the z3/2 as those prices will drop
I have been using the Z3 (Tmobile) for about a month. Love the phone. Go for it. I have not experienced explosions and glass shrapnel or electrocution. You won't regret it.
I would say any problem can happen with any phone.
If you have a shattered back what happened to me once you are doomed by Sony as they don't repair it for you. But I have doubts others are more cooperative on that point so that's a general risk with glass.
Aside of that the Xperia is a really nice piece of design and hard- as well as software and yet the only (former) top model with dust and waterproof certification. You won't miss anything major.
As for the question of Z2 or Z3 it's rather a question if you need to spend an extra amount of money just to get the newest model on paper. By performance there's not a notable difference in daily use (and I have both next to me).
A sale just made things more difficult
So, both phones are on sale now, one from a big company so support should be better and includes for 60 Euro a 1 year damage warranty which should cover any sudden glass damage issue. The second from some small store... So the prices:
Z2 - 438 Euro with the extra damage protection for 1 year.
Z3 - 425 Euro with just regular warranty and a LOT of reported sudden glass damage issue.
It is a hard choice. Considering the glass issue, I am leaning towards the Z2 (which did have the glass issue, but seems to be a lot less these days).
The price for the Z3 is good, the additional warranty for the Z2 comes about 80 Euros... if really needed.

Hi,
i dont success to find a compact phone thats waterproof,
there are a lot of still capable phones, like the z1 compact, z3 compact, and so on,

Not sure what phones are the best for being water proof but I can also say that Sony wouldn't be the way to go.
A friend of mine put his waterproof sony phone in a fountain to take a selfie (really stupid idea I know lol) and after he brought it out of the water the phone wouldn't stop vibrating all day haha.

samsung s5 mini looks to be waterproof,
i hate the mecanic button for home and the extremly crappy silver plastic frame on the phone that peels of so easy,
but i guess thats something i must overcome, also is very expensive phone for such old CPU, but i dont find anything better thats below a 5" brick size.
Those top brands are no longer what they used to be... sometimes i think china brands phones have better quality,

I agree, Chinese manufacturers have really stepped their game up in the past few years it seems. You can get a device at 1/4 of the price with better hardware if you know where to look. The only problem is the lack of developer support for Chinese devices so they can be useless to you if you enjoy custom ROMs/ Root access.
