Battery cover mod, polished metal

This wasn't a very hard mod to do, but I think the phone looks a million times better. It started when I noticed a scratch on my back cover. I started picking at it, thinking a industrial bare metal back might be kind of cool. A little more scratched off, and to my surprise it was a beautiful polished metal underneath the exact same shade as the bevel on the front. So little by little I would scrape more. It was taking a great deal of time, so I decided to try using the edge of a thin piece of metal I had laying around. I started slow because I was unsure if the polished metal would scratch, it didn't. As I made better time now I was prepared for the t-mobile and HTC branding to come off, they did not. They, like the dots appear to be etched into the metal underneath. So now I have a beautiful, polished metal back on my phone at no cost. Seeing as how it matches the bezel and the branding is etched in, it seems that this was the intended look at one point. Why would HTC and T-Mobile cover this beautiful metal with a frosted coating? I always thought that the back looked out of place. Was it for fingerprints? Was it an antenna issue? I haven't noticed any ill effects yet, be advised it is a fingerprint magnet though. If you like please follow me on twitter @Dustin_aka_D, I'd appreciate it. Also, it's not hard, but is time consuming and tedious. Hope you like...

So, it's just a thin plastic/vinyl layer over the metal?
How prone is it to finger prints now?
It's actually not as bad for fingerprints as I thought it would be. The gloss underneath seems to be scratch resistant and kinda repels fingerprints. Wipes clean on a shirt.

I did the same thing to my thunderbolt. Works very well.
Someone else posted doing the same a few weeks ago, for the same reasons: noticed small scratches and stripped it all off. My wife actually did this to hers this week for again the same reason lol. It looks nice for sure, definitely shows finger prints a bit worse but they do wipe clean easily. Took her about two days on and off with a credit card, in between a cramped hand, haha.
Yeah, I used one of those smashed souvenir pennies, worked great. Definite cramped hand. Love it though

20min? haha im on the second day using a quarter, and ive gotten thru about 14 rows of those markings on the back of the phone

I just went nuts up and down then went across. It seemed like no matter how much pressure i put it didnt scratch the cover. A quarter has a more rounded edge than a dime that's why I used the dime. Now I just need to know if the area around the camera lens can be done. It looks like the same stuff but can't be fixed if I chunk it

This just in, sandpaper is abrasive.
LMAO sand paper, Ummm.... I did this a few days after I got the phone with a nickel. I realized that no matter what I did it was gonna come off anyways so off I went to the pocket and grabbed a shiny nickel and went to work (took about 10 minutes) used a puffing pad I had from a dremel kit I use some times at work and it came out nice.
This is a great fix for a bad design, the flat matte clear coat was a bad idea but was intended to protect the original image based below obviously, personally I would have used a clear textured vinyl coat over it and it would have lasted so much longer (I use to use it for custom boxes in cars for a 3d effect with layers of paint on each, works great) but either way this comes down to the point that the internal design was well thought out but not so much thought went into protecting the design.
Works for me.
Buffer and polishing compound would probably make it more shiny - I'll have to try that this weekend.

What you have to do is, stick it to the touchscreen and pull it to the maximum point without letting it unstick. Do it a few times until the stains disappear
I assure you it is faster than duck tape

You wouldn't catch me dead using either, most glass cleaners have ammonia in them while this does very little if any damage to your screen it can damage the plastic around it. The same holds true for hand sanitizer most of them use some kind of glycerin binder to maintain a gel consistency till it comes in contact with your body heat. As you might have guessed glycerin has cumulative effect on the plastics of your phone the same way ammonia does, I cant speak much on the glycerin but ammonia can turn some types of plastic brittle over time.
Personally I use isopropyl alcohol (the highest concentration I can find) which right now is only 91% works great on all forms of electronics & the dreaded screen smudges from oil.
If your looking for a more portable solution I keep some Invisible Glass wipes in my car, they are ammonia free and do a kick ass job on just about everything I have cleaned with them.
Edit: Just noticed that Invisible Glass is giving out free samples through there site, sadly for you guys on the other side of the world it seems they are only shipping them out to the US..
Suction cup trick is a nice one to know, but knowing my luck I would rip my phone in half I have a passion for sliders with a full keyboard somehow I don't think this would mix all that well with them...

Clean touchscreens
Well remember that all liquids are the phone's enemies. If a little bit sips through, we are in trouble. My best advice would be to clean it with a wipe cloth to and a little eye glass cleaner. But don't make it too wet.

I just use water or alcohol. Alcohol is great for all screens! TV's etc!

My scary story for the day

So this morning my phone happened to be sitting on a toilet paper dispenser. As I was walking out of the stall the scariest possible thing happened. My phone dropped off, and plop... landed right in the toilet, as if that wasn't bad enough it was full so I had to flush it to get to the phone. So I couldn't just pull it right out, it had to sit there as I flushed 2 or 3 times.
So after I managed to fish it out, I immediately removed the battery, sim card, and SD card and took it back to my room. I then stuck it in a large cup full of rice. I figured I should be ok since the contacts on the battery were dry, and the sticker on the top of the battery is still white. 6 hours later, I poured out the rice and booted up the phone, and now I've decided someone upstairs loves me.
All phone functions were still working, including music and ringtones from the internal speaker. I am vastly impressed, and must say, thank you Samsung for making your hardware right!
im speechless lmfao

As a short time ex cellphone technician I can state only 1 thing. Water damages sneak up on you.. your phone could be working fine now then a week or 2 weeks down the road random reboots.. phone starts glitching up and starts opening up random apparel by it self. I had many and many encounters with water damaged hardware!... u can't see rust unless u remove everything to the last screw... and even then the memory disk could rust down the road... u did a smart thing with rice.. its one of the best things... another is partially cleaning the phone with wd40 very neatly and then partially soaking it with rubbing alcohol something that's more of 91% or at least 70%... but I hope ur phone continues to operate without a flaw.

This morning trying to return a text while taking a whizz, I dropped mine in the toilet of pee. For a millisecond I was like no way in hell am I sticking my hand in piss but I did and wiped it down and took it apart and washed the battery cover. I then wiped it down with alcohol. I just let it sit in a room with a fan going all day and then in rice for an hour after my mom suggested it. It's actually still working so far (I haven't tested speakers) but the battery sticker is red.

Don't shower with your SW2

Just a heads up. Got my SW2 on Friday, it's Tuesday and my watch is acting up. I think it's due to taking a shower while wearing it. I wasn't laying in the tub or anything like that, just a quick 10 minute shower. Noticed some condensation behind the sensor and for most of the day and the top half of the screen wasn't responsive. Everything is working fine now, but there's still some condensation behind the sensor. Just a warning to some of you. I figure it'd be pretty obvious to avoid swimming while wearing this thing but I didn't think water would seep through while showering.

STEAM... A HOT SHOWER MAKES STEAM.
It can penetrate just about anything that's only mildly waterproof because it is water VAPOR not liquid water.
That's a good point, I didn't think about that.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
You might have a small defect in the "water-proofing" of the watch but steam is most likely the culprit. Had it happen to a few electronic devices that were just sitting on the sink while someone was taking a shower. I've yet to have any issues with it considering I don't take it off in the shower.
AFAIK SW2 is water-RESISTANT, not waterPROOF. That means it still does not like water and I don't know why you even take a shower with it
My phone is T. Xperia T.
IP57 should mean that its ok in the shower
http://userguide.sonymobile.com/ref...artwatch-2-sw2#!Water-resistance---AccCA.html
Although i dont think i would, it should be waterproof to a max of 1m for a maximum of 30 mins.
Why would you shower with a watch on to begin with?

Only if you shower in water at or below room temperature and you don't use soap.

Soapy water and water mixed with chemicals have different penetrating properties than PLAIN water. I wouldn't even wear it washing the car or dishes.
Although I'm still early in my Science Education (College-stage) Water Vapor is probably going to have an easier time at getting in than water. I don't really care about it that much as I had it free with my Xperia Z1, if it breaks I will be a little bummed but it's something I can live without. So I'm going to continue wearing it in the shower, and see what happens, I've had no issues so far with condensation inside the screen, I use to wear normal waterproof watch without any problems at all, so I don't think to take my watch off before I go in the shower.
sent from my Nexus 7 using xda xda-developers
IP57 means it's resistant to immersion up to 1m and 30 minutes.
The tab doesn't specify however if by saying IP57 they mean that it includes IP56 and IP55 (resistant to water jets).
Anyway, as I said in another thread, I take a shower every single day and have never taken off the watch during any of those.
No issues here, all fine with my watch.
It happened a couple of times that it rebooted itself but it was sufficient to turn it off and on and all was good.
I try not to wash it with any soap, but I don't sweat it if it happens now and then.
All this to say if your unit has water penetrating by showering, it may be defective.
On the Sony site they say " You can therefore use the device in dusty environments, when your fingers are wet, and in extreme weather conditions, for example, when it’s snowing or raining, or when humidity levels are high. See the table below for more details.", and I wouldn't classify taking a shower as "extreme condition".

Badly swollen Galaxy battery - safe to handle?

I need to so something about the phone, I think it might be a fire hazard to keep this at home especially when I'm not present during the day.
Obviously I'm not going to attempt to charge the battery or turn the phone on in this state.
I'd like to try and remove the battery and take it to a recycling/ewaste collection point. I'd make sure to take precautions when removing the battery to avoid puncturing it or applying pressure, but with this level of swelling, is just handling the phone/battery dangerous? If so, I could instead take it to a technician to remove the battery or just recycle the entire phone - but I'd still need to carry the phone there, obviously, so some risk would remain.
Is there a risk of a sudden explosion or fire without warning?

Absolutely there is. Being an avid RC modeler for many years I have seen first hand what LiPo / Lithium ion batteries can do in that state. Not to panic you or anything, but just be extra careful when you remove it, and don't puncture the shielding wrap. Once you get it out, then I do as this YT video suggests to discharge and disable what capacity the battery has left.
Best of luck my friend, and just be careful.
Yep, my plan is to unscrew the board cover and hope I can simply lift the battery out, it's probably unglued itself by bulging outwards so much. I just wanted to know if I have to worry about it exploding just from being disturbed, and with enough force to deprive me of a few fingers.

It's actually funny that you say that. However, this is not from a LiPo battery, but rather an error that occurred in 1975
As long as you don't forcefully puncture the battery, you should be fine.
Spoiler: OUCH!!
If there's no charge on it, it's no big deal ie no stored energy. They got a fruity smelling solvent in them, not particularly toxicity. I've taken them apart before, they are quit flimsy. Read up on it.
If you're keeping the phone use small amounts of anhydrous isopropyl to soften the double sided adhesive fastening strips. The biggest danger is damaging the display, take your time.
It will eventually pry out, pinhole puncture the bag on the top if it helps. You can then bend the hell out of it if fully discharged and if this helps in removal. The display is what you need to be worried about.
The plastic containment bag is fairly thick, if does leak soak it up with tissue paper, keep it out of the phone. Keep any fluid anyway from contacts and the mobo.
Wash hands afterwards.
It may have already damaged the display by the pressure of the swelling.
Mission success - the battery is out of the phone and all my fingers are still attached. The screen looks fine, seems like the battery bulged it outwards and the adhesive gave before the screen could crack - but I'll see when I connect the new battery.
For anyone else with this problem, I just followed the normal battery replacement guides, but without heating the phone, and I was very careful to not crush or puncture the battery. To remove it, use (liberal amounts of) isopropyl alcohol to weaken its adhesive, then a credit card to very carefully and slowly try to cut through the adhesive.
Thanks for your help, guys.

Yay!
Dissect the old battery, it's interesting... and flimsy. If you throw it in a fire, not much happens... yeah, I recycle
Word of warning with using isopropyl alcohol... NEVER get it or other solvents near a LCD display as it will poison it and destroy it. LCDs are vented to the atmosphere on the sides and are not completely sealed.
On AMOLED phones anhydrous isopropyl can also be used as a drying agent for water contamination.
Use your best judgment as if it gets in between the display and glass it will leave a residue marks. Use at least 96% pure isopropyl, never use methanol alcohol, other solvents or rubbing alcohol (too much water).
Allow assemblies to dry completely after use.
The battery is fine to handle so long as you don't puncture it. It's full of toxic gas. The metals are long dissolved so there's no chance it holds a charge for more than a few seconds.
