In the market for a tablet any suggestions? - General Questions and Answers

Hi,
I am on the look out for a good tablet, preferably 10" with expandable storage. I have been looking at the note 2014, or the nexus 10 32gb. I don't have a budget as of yet probably how much I can save up/make if I manage to get a job (fingers crossed). I have no dislikes in a tablet, I will probably be using it for gaming most of the time and watching high definition movies probably in mkv format possibly some photo taking so a gd camera would be nice.
Thanks in advance

Is it possible to run stock android on it then?, if so what kind of performance do you get?

I'd go for the nexus 10. It gets stock android from the off and as its made by Google it will be first to receive updates in future.

Viewsonic Viewbook vb730

Could we get some love for the Viewsonic Viewbook vb730 on XDA? I know that it's not that popular of a tablet but it would be cool to have a place for questions.
Agree... Should any big head of Xda help me on this? New firmware? Best software for this?

Do you have the vb730? I'd like your thoughts on this device. How much drive space is set aside for apps. This looks like the tablet for me. I just think the reviews do not give it justice.

Yes I do. I am using a Vb730. I do think it is a combination product of tablet and E-reader.
The Internal Memory is 8GB and the space for data application is about 5 GB/8GB. But you can expand the capacity by Micro SD... I am using 16 GB Micro SD card (around 30$ I think)
For an e-reader, it use LCD screen so could be not very good for your eyes.
For a tablet, it is not multiple touch screen so you can not use two of your finger the same time.
Most of the Android software can be installed by using Explorer software of this. It is quite simple. However, you could not install Android Market Software... But you can use Amazon Application...
I do think it is quite good with the price you have to pay...
Thanks. Now just waiting for Christmas to get this or the Galaxy Tab 7. I really think the vb would suit me fine.

Smartphone Hardware Survey

Hello Everyone! I've created a Smartphone Hardware Survey on Survey Monkey to get people's opinions on items like buttons, form factor, memory cards, and screen size. I think it will be pretty interesting to see what popular opinion shows.
I've tried to be as unbiased as I can in the creation of this survey. In a few weeks when we've gotten enough responses to have a good data set, I'll update this thread with the results. Please only fill it out once. Thanks for contributing!
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/JTSR5J9
note to the mods: If possible, I'd like permission to post this in some of the more popular device forums. Let me know, Thanks!

Everyone. Thanks for all the positive talk. Sorry I couldn't get those questions in at this time. The free version is limited to 10 questions. Maybe at somepoint this might grow a little bigger. We'll see what happens for now. I've got 11 responses so far. I'm really hoping to get over 100. We'll see if that happens.
Done :good:

I think you can do a survey with Google Docs ( don't know how, but I know there is a way). Try using it.

Done. Would definitely like more questions. My personal stake is audio quality and GPS.
For all those wanting more questions, I don't want to add on so as to keep the results consistent. However, if this is successful I could do another one down the road.
FYI, we've already got 21 responses!!! That's awesome!!

New Tablet Owner - Seeking Help

Hi everyone - I've never owned a tablet and I am trying to learn about my new Galaxy Note 10.1 as much as possible so that I can use it to its full potential.
Can anyone give me advice on where to find videos or tutorials on how to use this tablet? I haven't found much on YouTube yet (in English). Are there any lists of features on anything on this forum? I haven't found much in my brief search.
Thanks to all! I love the tablet so far but I want to learn EVERYTHING about it.

Search for the tips and tricks thread in the general section as a starting point and build from there.
Here's a starting point on Youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hr7HO3UuM_c
There is another thread giving you this link too, look through the videos from this starting point. This is an excellent rundown of some of the features...

There are also some Kindle books (some free) available that are pretty good for beginners (like us!).
Try downloading the Galaxy Note 10.1 User Digest from the play store. It's a great place to start.

Thanks everyone! I've learned so much already! The digest app was particularly helpful. I'm going to watch the YouTube videos soon.
This tablet is amazing. The more I'm learning, the more I wonder why people would buy any other tablet. Simply incredible.

[Q] Need advice on buying older phone possibly ATRIX??

Hi guys, I need an advice on buying an older model smart phone. I don't want to spend more than $200 on it and I was thinking of getting Atrix 4G that costs less than $200. Is it still good idea to buy this older model since it's not going to get an ice cream sandwich upgrade? Or does this really matter? What would be the lifespan left of this phone? I don't need this phone to play any games, I just need it to browse, email and skype. Do you guys have any other suggestions?
Thanks for your time.
Anything older than ICS is going to be pretty lackluster in my opinion - you might check to see what, if any, ROMs are available for the phones you're looking at.
Anything you can get for $200 is probably at the end of its "lifespan" already - not supported. Lifespan that you can use it - well, I imagine ICS will be supported for a while, but anything less is, to me, risking having apps you want to use not support it any more in the future.
You can get some decent phones at that price. You could probably get a used Galaxy Nexus - which would be a good choice as it will continue to be supported by Google likely for some time. It will just take a bit of hunting and sniping on eBay to get one at that price that's in decent condition.
Hi erikmarko,
I've bought a Motorola Atrix in november (160€≈200$). It's a great phone and a cool developpement tool. But CM10/AOKP ROM it's not fine for it. I don't know why there are many graphic bug (for example, i can't make a benchmark -> fc on 3d test).
But if you install CM7/9, you'll get an awesome phone for gaming and HD videos playing. For your requirements, what do you think about an Xperia x10 ? Cheaper than Atrix but great too for you if you want only check your mails etc...
Or if you have worries about lifespan, you can listen Pennycake and check eBay for a used Nexus or Nexus S (Google will support it longer than Motorola supports Atrix).
Sorry for my bad English

GoL LuM, I have couple of questions for you. That CM7/9 is it custom rom that you can upload to the phone? And does it run ICS software when I upgrade to it? Does Xperia x10 run ICS?

You should buy an atrix HD (new) , its a phenomenal device with not much development. If you buy an old phone, buy the HTC Google nexus one (2010).

Guys, I was afraid that if I get a phone that is stuck on Gingerbread and let's say new version of skype comes out it will require ICS to run. Do I need to worry about that? Or does gingerbread OS still have few years left?

I don't understand your question. CyanogenMod is a custom ROM. Your can upload and install it to the phone. All you need is just a unlocked bootloader (there are tutorials on Google). Take a tour in the "Motorola Atrix 4G" section on XDA.
CM7=Gingerbread
CM9=Ice Cream Sandwich
CM10=Jelly Bean
If you need specific apps that require ICS, just install CM9.
For the Xperia x10, it runs CM9/CM10.
For more information, don't hesitate to ask.

how good are tablets for ebook reading?

Hi,
I was wondering how good is the ebook reading experience on a tablet.I was wondering if anyone could share their experiences as I have never owned a tablet. Will they eliminate the need to buy hardcopy of books?if I`m gonna use it for reading around 3 hours how will it hold... do eyes strain more ?
Currently Nexus 7 is the table that I`m looking to buy I will mostly be using the tab at home but is the extra cash for the sim version worth it?
I also read a great many issues regarding the Nexus 7 is it a safe tablet to buy how is support of Asus in inida?
Please do share your thoughts..

I have a nexus 7 and have tried to read on it. There is something about it I do not like compared to a book or even a kindle. It's easy to read but seems more distracting. Not too sure why though.
