Tmobile Wifi tether block - General Topics

hi everyone,
I just want to ask.
This question is for those android smartphone users with prepaid and postpaid tmobile plans who use 3rd party wifi tethering apps.
If tmobile send you a notification of wifi tethering blocks, does that also mean that you can not access your phone's 4G internet connection?

Tried to use wifi tether on my Nexus 5 and it was a no go. Other phones saw the wifi and could connect to my phone but could not use the network.

Thanks for your reply ozzmanj,
however, you misundertood my question so I will paraphrase it.
If Tmobile network blocks your wifi tethering (from a 3rd party app), will your phone's 4G internet connection be block too ?

T-Mobile will only block wifi tethering. So you should still have your regular data to use.

just search this forum for the HTC WiFi router app. i used to use PDANet for tethering but this is SO much easier and more reliable. it basically turns your phone into a wifi hotspot so anyone close can use tap into it with a wifi enabled device. and there are security codes too so you dont have to worry about anyone you dont want accessing it getting in. hope this helps.

[Q] Needing wireless tether to work for NS4G stock rooted

I am running a stock rooted NS4G and I am not able to get wireless tether to work on my phone. I have tried Wireless Tether and I can see the network on my computer but when I try to connect its a no go (my computer just keeps connecting but never connects). I also tried Barnacle Tether but I get the same issue. I really don't-won't want to change my kernel to get this feature does any one have any ideas?
Thanks
I had to download the latest wireless tether app.

Lol no it doesn't. Enableing the hotspot disables my data connection so I use wifi tether.

It disables the data on the phone because it ports it straight to the wifi connection. Personally, I find this provides a more reliable connection (though it is annoying that updates are suspended while you're using it).
Edit: It is not 100% pass through. Data still works on the phone, but sync is suspended.

Is there any way to get 4G tethering and infrastructure rather than ad-hoc?
If via wireless or wifi-tether app what version are you using? 2.0.8 pre-1 or 3.0 pre-14? Or something else? The built-in tethering turns 4G off, so alternatively to wireless tether is there a way around this?

Officially, yes (or, "It's a bug we're working on").
What I know:
On the Evo, the Sprint wifi app would authenticate to check if you subscribed to a tethering plan. If not, it gave an error and would not work. The Nexus uses the stock Android tethering app, which does no such thing. It just works.
What I don't know:
- If Sprint will work with Google to make the stock tethering app subscription-dependant.
- If Sprint will leave it alone, as a Pure Google feature they'd rather keep on the down low. After all, people are switching to Sprint just to get stock Android, and there are reports that T-Mobile still isn't charging for tethering on the Nexus 6 months later.
- If Sprint will detect usage and charge for tethering after the fact.

+1 on this! The built in hotspot only works for 3g. Of course we 4g owners want full speed so that just isn't good enough. I have gotten android wifi tether running on ad hoc and it works BUT I really want the added protection of WPA and the ability to connect other devices besides a computer. I've been searching for a way to run it as a wireless access point but haven't found anything. I'm guessing by the lack of response to the above post there aren't any solutions yet???

I know I'm dredging up an old thread here, but when I Google'd this issue this was the thread I found and I wanted to add the solution for others running into this.
I ended up finding a way to make this work! I'm using the latest version of android-wifi-tether (3.1-beta7). If you set the "Device-Profile" to "Samsung Galaxy S" and the "Setup-Method" to "Netd", it will support tethering to 3G or 4G (4G takes a little while to reconnect after enabling tethering) via WPA/WPA2. My tethered laptop checks in at 9.96/1.41Mbps down/up with this method.

Tethering?

Is it possible to WiFi tether using the Sensation as a WiFi hotspot without rooting? (Since root has not yet been achieved.)
I have a Nook Color that I often use while tethered via my Nexus One, so to lose this functionality would definitely be a deal-breaker.
The Wifi hotspot functionality has been in android since 2.2 so it should work unless HTC have removed it for some reason. Doubt they have though.
I tried it several times, when turn on hot spot, the wi fi will turn off automatically.
I guess hot spot is for mobile internet, not for wi fi.

Many carriers remove it so they can force you into purchasing their tethering plans.

You turn on the mobile hotspot feature. The wifi turns off and the mobile data turns on. thats the hotspot setup.
then use your nook to search for wifi connection and connect to the sensation.

Yes, when you turn on WiFi hotspot, any Android phone will disconnect from WiFi, turn on 3G/4G data, and rebroadcast that data connection as a WiFi hotspot to other devices.
This is standard operation.
I'm just confused as to why he posted it. It doesn't answer the question of whether tethering works or not...? Seems like just a random post.
@everyday48, when you "tried it", did you try connecting another WiFi only device to the WiFi hotspot created by the Sensation?
Yes the sensation has wifi hotpot & tethering out of box.Cheers

Plus I don't believe they charge a tethering fee, so all the more reason for them to keep it in, as you'll end up using more data

T-Mobile does charge for tethering via a WiFi hotspot feature as xnifex posted.
But so far it just seems random as to which phones they charge for and which they don't.
Has anyone seen a list of which T-Mobile android phones have tethering free and which you have to pay for?
BOOM
http://www.laptopmag.com/review/cell-phones/htc-sensation-4g.aspx?page=all
The Sensation can act as a mobile hotspot for up to five devices using the dedicated app. This feature costs $15 per month on top of your data plan.
Are they talking out of their ass or is this true?
Since people are starting to get their T-Mobile Sensations from Wal-Mart now, is tethering free or no?
I tried it out on mine and wasn't prompted to add the feature to my account. I guess I'll see what happens at the end of the month, lol
How to tell if being charged?
I have tested this and it works but I am not sure if I am being charged. If there is a charge I will just root and use the wireless tether app.
And now that T-Mobile Sensations are rolling out, is it free on those too?
The reason I ask is because upgrading through wireless.amazon.com and wirefly.com both list charges for tethering.
How the heck does that work if it's supposed to be free?

[Q] WiFi Tether on Tmobile (going over the 2.5 gb limit)

Hi there,
I have a $70 T-Mobile Unlimited Plan which includes 2.5 GB wifi tether hotspot feature.
My question is, when i was on Sprint (Rooted ROM) I was able to use the built in wifi tether feature without any limitations.
It appears on the nexus 5 (android kit kat) that the carriers now have the ability to truly monitor this useage.
Would i be able to get around it by using a 3rd party tethering app?
Anyone else had success in going over the 2.5gb wifi hotspot allowed?
It makes no sense to me why me using my data on my nexus 5 vs. tethering and using my nexus 7 should be limited.
Thanks in advance,
RR

I have the same plan...you might also have to change your apn settings to ipv4, at least I had to. btw, i'm just south of riverside, ca and although my lte speeds are over 20 mbs down, if I change the preferred network settings to hspa (3g?) instead of lte, I can stream with little to no buffering.

This should help. Read the thread and figure it out.
You will not get around the limit using a third party app (if you want it to work over wifi). It may not make any sense to you, but to providers it does because they can make money. I agree, it's dumb that they want to charge more to share a data plan you already use, but it's us vs them and they're are big wireless companies... so I don't think our complaints will go very far.
You should be happy that you do have the 2.5GB because it can be very handy in a pinch when you need to do something on laptop or tablet but no wifi available or because the available network is just straight up garbage.
But since you say you're using your tablet, have you tried bluetooth vpn with PDAnet? I used to do that for my tablet. It's not the greatest because some apps wont recognize the bluetooth as you have a "internet connection" but its worth a try. I havent used it in a while as I really dont tether much these days so I'm not sure how good it is these days.
Do this and u should be ok...no tethering limits.

As a new member to the family of android devices, may i ask how you made your way to that cmd page, yes i know im a noob
Install android terminal from play store open it and execute that...oh you gotta be rooted for this to work.
Not Working
This did not bypass hotspot limits on Nexus 5 "tether_dun_required". I can use bluetooth to tether.
Can anyone confirm this works? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.snclab.wifitetherrouter

Wifi Tether

Anyone know how to get wifi tether working? I have crickets unlimited data plan. I'm trying to tether my laptop..
Yes, follow these steps to start Wifi Hotspot/Tether:
Go to Settings > More > Tethering & portable hotspot
Select Portable Wi-Fi hotspot
Toggle the button beside your host name.
By this you'll get your hotspot on.
I hope this helps you.
This doesn't work. Says I have to dial 611 to activate..

I am pretty sure that Cricket doesn't include tethering with their monthly plans.
So I would have to do it the root way then.

It's doing the carrier entitlement check. I can tether with another overseas phone out of the box on Cricket UDP. In fact I tried before typing this just in case there was a recent change

It's only avail on their Pro and Smart plans, and I think only supported on a few phones that they publish.
Cricket does include tethering on their plans just not on their unlimited. If you have the $50 or $60 plan you are eligible. But you also have to pay $10 to use the feature. They state that on their site.

Honor 8 Cricket WiFi Tether Fix - No Root
I have a brand new unrooted Honor 8 (with all the latest updates) and I was able to turn on tethering however connected devices were not getting internet. The devices would connect to the tethering WiFi access point but would state "No internet".
I added the string: 'dun' to the 'APN type' field in my APN settings so it read:
APN type default,mms,fota,hipri,supl,dun
I am now able to tether successfully without issue.
