I purchased 5 of these for Christmas, mostly for my kids to play games. The single biggest problem with them seems to be that they report OpenGL Version 0.0 even though they have OpenGL ES supported. Many games in Google Play are filtered because of this and can't be installed directly on the device. I've rooted one of them and sideloaded a bunch of apps by downloading them with other devices, all the games run fine once you get them installed.
Using Android system Info and hunting around on the web, it appears that the device is actually a M7000 manufactured by Yifang with a dual-core Mali-400 GPU. From what I see there are a lot of files floating around for older versions of Android and older serial numbers with different hardware configurations. I don't see anything for this device yet so I am hoping to make a small modification from the stock system to fix the issue.
I've ripped the system folder off the device and am trying to find video drivers and/or configuration changes that can allow the device to report OpenGL version correctly.
I'll let you know if I make any progress.

XBMC on Android

I think the time is near.
Linux Specific:
* Added support for ARM processor architecture (with TI OMAP3 and NVIDIA Tegra 2 as reference)
* Added OpenMAX Video Acceleration support (requires OpenMax IL compatible hardware, like Tegra2

The above was stated on changelog for the new stable XBMC release.
I am not expert on these things but is it really time for XBMC on Android tablets and phones?
This would be a great app for android, can anyone express their opinions in regard? Can it be done?
I would love to see this for my Xperia X10a.

In light of the upcoming Atrix 4G with their media hub, this would be perfect for a portable xbmc which you can take anywhere with you (especially when you have to travel).
Open the doors and bring forth XBMC........ please?

Those are two very specif SOC reference designs with limited availability in todays market. The Nexus One for example runs the MSM SOC, and Tegra2 phones were just announced this week.
It chapped my hide to find out that there are nearly full blown XBMC installs available now for iOS devices like the iPad and iPhone 4. How can there not be one in development for the Tegra 2 with existing tablets using that processor already available for purchase for less than $400...?
Yeah, with the elocity a7 @ $299 boasting a tegra 2 and 512 mb of RAM someone should jump on it.
*bump*
Do want.
Are there any news?
the majority of the libraries aren't a problem in a distribution sense, the NDK has support for that. the problem is the core ones, libc etc. Those which means a custom compiler. This won't do for market inclusion I bet. You can surely do a custom rom and just use the standard arm compiler but it would never be acceptible on market.

just a thought what if it is coded for android live?
Ios version works really we on my iPhone 4. I was completely gob smacked to find out there wasn't a version that could run on my android tablet. Make no sense at all that to open source system dosen't have It while the Analy retentive ios has a fully fledged functional version.
I wouldn't mind some news on this either. I had an Ubuntu 10.04 box, built from spare computer parts, serving as my XBMC hub. I wouldn't mind a smaller more portable version.
I'd love an update too.
It won't work until someone compiles all the libraries XBMC depends on (it's a lot) for Android.
Someone had said they were going to do that, but that was about a month ago and no one has chimed in since then.
sassafras
wonder if they re doing it.....
i use xbmc on my apple tv 2 (the thing is USELESS without it...) and would really love to have this on either my phone or an android tablet if/when I decide to buy one.
Consider me confused as well at how ios has xbmc yet android doesnt? really???
I have been waiting for this for a long time
I have been waiting for this since before they released it for ios devices. I would pay good money for the ability to run xbmc on my android devices! If I knew how I would have given it a try but maybe someone who is talented at these things could do there magic. If there is anyone out there working on this it would be fantastic for all of us Android/XBMC users. I just think it suits the android devices better anyways bigger screens faster processors more freedom. Thanks and Please!!

Of course it is But I would imagine such an app would require faster quad cores, like the ones coming out. The exynos may be able to handle this but not very well. Many pc's with quads struggle with ps2 games, so I wanna see how a phone handles..

libSDL is not an issue; porting the x86 code for micro/dynarec/int to ARM is the real issue.
i would love to see this happen. especially since they finally made the ps3 controller app. and it worjs wonderful... ps2 on a phone would make me upgrade regardless of the price. and i usually get my phones for dirt cheap. like my current dx was $50 i just passed up a chance to buy a dx2 from a friend who said he didnt like it for $75

This thread is the sad truth about xda-developers comunity these days... About the topic, even some powerfull x86 computer has issues (lag, texture problems and more), do you imagine how will this run on a mobile processor?
Cores don't translate to power, only to multi-threading, mobile processors are not the same processors you use on PC, on the technology we have today, this is not doable.
(and i can't find it possible, that people just say somethings like "someone just compile it and give us the apk"...people like these have no idea of what programming is...this is not organics)
I left this in the Development forum in the hope that there would be some actual development work on this project. Since that's not the case I'm now moving it to the General forum.
Thread moved.

It pretty much could be done there was a Dreamcast emulator that was being worked on for android it had crazy taxi and a few other games running so the possibility of a phone to play PS2 Games should be doable since my old laptop could play most PS2 games perfectly but struggled to play some Dreamcast games if this was done it would be amazing although saying this EPSXE PS1 emulator is on Google playstore maybe they might try making a PS2 emulator but games/roms will take up loads of memory

tegra 2 harmony video excelerated kernel

I was just wondering, the viewsonic gtablet is a tegra 2 harmony device and the guys at team drh have made a kernel for ics that is fully hardware excelerated so my question is since the g2x is a harmony device can the drh kernel be used as a base for a working g2x kernel with full video decoding just like the gtablet???
Harmony is for tablets. We have Ventana.
Closest best is the ZTE Mimosa X which has ICS and the Ventana. When it drops hopefully we can grab the drivers from there.
From the 2x side:
msedek said:
If porting full working drivers were possible in any way from any device to make o2x runs with everything working on ics it should be done by now.. Al the things you are thinking now developers though about it long time ago... I'm developer myself.. Just not android developer.. I develop in assembler for microcontrollers as I am electronics engineer, and trust me there's nothing that I don't know about the chips I work on...
Every microcontroler (I'm specialist in microchip) has different libraries to access the different modules... As microchip produce open source libraries I can access all the functionalities in the processor and microchip provide the full pdf with the instructions set for every processor.. But even chips from the same family with a minimum variation like let's say pic18f478 to pic18f478a can have bunch of different modules with a bunch of different libraries...
So once I can develop a function out of the instructions set (what's called here from scratch) I can then develop a library wich I can call in my main software every time I want the processor execute an action... So in this case Nvidia won't provide their instructions set for their processors... They only provide libraries to oems... And oems can develop procedures and functions with these libraries...
That said Nvidia has no responsibilities here... Because no matter what os oems use the chips and the libraries are the same and the method to access chipset function won't change from one os to another... That's processor architecture and can not be modified..
LG has to re develop the function and procedures to work with the new os that is low level (assembler compiled) and embedded into the os... Those functions are way different from one device to another and it's not possible to use them unless it's the same exact chip family with no variants...
Devs here can not develop functions because they don't have access to the libraries... They only have access to the final product or what I could call the UI for developer.. And that's the DRIVERS..
That's it..

Direct X AND Android

here we all know that there are many android devices with different cpu and gpu and due to these different hardware there are many problem happen to playing games
in the pc world there are also different hardware in many pc but games work great on every pc which have totally different hardware form each other and i think that this is happen only with Direct x
my point is that is it possible on Android .can someone make the software like direct x for android so we can play games on every android devices which have different cpu and gpu
(some universal graphics method like DirectX where GPU type doesn't matter). IS IT POSSIBLE ON ANDROID

Indeed OpenGL is the platform used (is also used on linux) which works in many cases just as well as direct x (which is only for windows btw).
Valve are doing alot of work porting l4d2 to opengl and finiding it runs far better.
Anyway the point is there already is this software on android which works very well. But just like games on windows there still has to be minium requirements (good luck running crysis on a 10 year old computer) and so some games do require more powerful gpus like the tegra 3 chip

I ordered this exact tablet last week and it just came in the mail. It's an impressive piece of hardware with very little bloatware out of the box, but Jellybean takes up a lot of RAM by default (1/2 is being used just by the thing being turned on). I'd like to figure out the best method to root it at least, though my ideal goal is to put a ROM of an earlier release of the Android OS on it, I'm quite partial to Gingerbread to be entirely honest since it tends to use a lot less RAM and CPU power to run on similar hardware I've used before.
EDIT: Hopefully someone with actual experience can look into rooting this tablet, I tried using some typical "generic Android tablet root" techniques and nothing is working.

I got kinda suckered into buying one of you too. They were so cheap so I figured why not. My main complaints are that the operating system seems to be the part that's making it so laggy. When it's actually performing a task it works fairly well. I use NHL GameCenter and for the life of me I can't figure out how to get the streaming for work. SwiftKey keyboard is really laggy and unusable entirely. Also, Chrome seems to be impossible to use because of the lag. Other than that though everything else seems to run fairly smooth so I think it's more of an operating system issue than power issue. The battery is good it sounds good the screen is OK touch screen works...but if I can't use chrome or watch NHL games,I might have to return it.

Tablet seems to perform fairly well in games but is laggy at times on web surfing. As the previous poster noted Chrome is almost unusable it is so laggy. Video apps seem to perform well after they load up. If an item is being downloaded in the background tablet is very laggy. I tend to agree with the previous poster that the main problem is the operating system. Maybe an update to 4.3 will come soon and improve performance.

Yeah I noticed the background downloading slowing it to a crawl. I think that's an issue with the kernel or memory read speed. There are some tweaks that we will be able to do once a working recovery is available that will fix that. Network speed too. I speed checked it and im getting 35mbs so the issue isn't the WiFi unit itself, its just software. I'm hoping somebody will make a nice custom ROM for us

nothing out yet...it's just the os on it that sucks...just upgraded to 4.2.2 and it even slower...once theres a rom it will eliminate all the bloat in it...just hold on to it and wait...you will not get a quad core for that price...
Its a really terrible a5 based quad-core.. A dual core a9 would run circles around it. There isn't really any bloat in the rom, they didn't do much of anything to it. No custom rom is gonna upgrade the cpu or craptastic generic gpu. If you can return it, go do that. If you can't, I'm sorry, but it's never going to respond like an a9. It sucks that actions is full of lies, and Hannspree bought them, and retailers don't care what they are selling you.
