I'm convinced that the screen is slightly out of calibration - but I can see no way to reset the calibration. (I'm ex WinMo!) - it must be in there somewhere - or do i need "an app for that".
Advice appreciated
G.
I was also thinking this. Unfortunately I still have not bought the phone yet, or I would of tried creating an app to test this theory. If a touch can be captured in x/y data, we could see what the problem is with the bottom row keys.

The more I use the phone, I'm starting 2 think that the screen is not so much out of calibration, but is very sensitive 2 the angle that U touch the screen. when I use 2 hands 2 use the phone, It seems 2 always respond correctly
cause my finger is touching straight down, but if I use 1 hand and try 2 reach
across the it responds off a lil at times. 2 solve this I put the phone 2 the end of my
fingers and secure it as far from my thumb as possible. awkward at first 4 me be it responds correctly when I do. Hope this is clear and helps U. I do have big hands though.

I might know what you are talking about. At times I can't slide home screens when using the phone with one hand and it can get very annoying, but I blame myself rather than this wonderful phone.
I also remember my wife using the phone while it was flat on the desk and it would not respond properly, but as soon as it was picked up and did the same procedures it would work properly. We were thinking that It may have something to do with the angle of the phone and our fingers on the screen. Dont really know I just know how to get it working.
Have you guys rooted and enabled multi-touch?
If not, are you sure this isn't to do with the lack of multi-touch. On my N1 I have the same problem when using it with one hand. And I've noticed it's because part of my palm sometimes touches the screen as I'm holding the phone. As theres no multi-touch it won't register what I'm selecting with my thumb until my palm stops touching the screen.
At first I suspected it was an issue with the screen responsiveness/calibration aswell. Because as you try and tap with your thumb a few times, eventually you move your palm and it works.
However, then I took a closer look everytime it happened, and noticed part of my palm was always touching the screen.
Obviously this doesn't happen when you use two hands as usually you will then hold the phone with your fingertips, not by wrapping your hand around it.

Dude, thanks for using your first post on us.
I think you are correct about the palm touching the screen. I have rooted and installed the modaco custom ROM, but I have not installed anything else for multi-touch. I will definitely look into this, thanks.

No problem.
Coming from an iPhone it was not something I ever thought about, so was quite releaved when I figured out why it was happening.
Was on here looking for widgets when I spotted this so thought I'd register and save you scratching your head trying to figure it out like I did.
Lots of stuff to love about the phone, especially the battery life which I'm really impressed with and hadn't even expected to be a plus point over the 3GS. This was just supposed to be a stop gap until the iPhone 4G, but I'm actually thinking I may stick with it now

If you stick with it then welcome to android.
If you don't then you just need to have fun with this phone.
I've been finding ways around the major niggles I had over the last couple of weeks. So it's looking promising that I won't be splashing out for another iPhone in June/July.
It helps that my brother has one and I've had some time to play with it and get everything the way I want it. Which is part of the reason I got it now. If it had been during a really busy period (work wise), i'd probably be back on the 3GS.
Guys & Gals,
I have had Captivate for almost 3 weeks now and I like it overall. But two things have frustrated me enough, that I am considering returning the phone. Before I do that, I want to find out from you all if you experience similar issues or have any workarounds.
1. The TOP FRUSTRATION with this phone is the four buttons on the bottom (Menu, Home, Back & Search). The "back" button is a hit or miss. I have to almost hit the back button multiple times for it to recognize the input. This is really frustrating since the "back" button is what I generally use a lot. The buttons get worse when you apply screen protectors. Without a screen protector, it is a little better but still many occasions have to hit the "back" button multiple times.
2. The phone has dropped calls for me several times for no apparent reason. At times, I press "hang up" after the call, all buttons on the screen gets greyed out but the call is still active. I can't press any keys and have to restart the phone.
I DO NOT Like Samsung TouchWIZ. I think it is a piece of crap software. If this is all due to the TouchWiz, can I just plain disable it and use default Android?
More importantly, will the sensitivity of the four capacitive buttons at the bottom get better with Froyo or has it not anything to do with it.
I have already exchanged the phone once to eliminate the possibility that I got a lemon. My friend also has the back button issue. Otherwise, I love the phone. Please help me keep the phone.
I've actually had all of the issues you're talking about, but my capacitive touch buttons would also push themselves repeatedly, which was horrible when you're trying to do something and the Back button kept going off.
I've heard that the newer firmwares actually fix this, but I haven't flashed my phone.
If you don't like Touchwiz, go to the market and download Launcher Pro or ADW Launcher. They're much better replacements and clear up a lot of the latency issues.
If you're willing to wait till the end of the month for the GPS fix and Froyo, then let it ride. Enjoy the phone for what it is and wait for the gooey goodness of Froyo.
If you're a bit more impatient, then you're probably going to have to return it for something else. Samsung isn't known for their support in the handset market, but maybe they'll remedy that here with having a real potential winner on their hands.
Is there a specific firmware that will increase the sensitivity of the back button?
I would only return the phone if you plan on getting a replacement and seeing if that improves the buttons responses. Test it out in the store alot to make sure it suffices for you
I would get odin and flash your phone to the jh3 firmware then apply the sre rom to it.
I have messed with my phone a lot have not had those issues but its real stable on that combination. Or you can flash back to full stock with the odin on click downloader that is in the development forums and see if that fixes your issues. If you are rooted then do a titanium backup of apps and data that way you can re root and load that back on with all your apps.
Why do u have a screen protector? This supposedly has gorilla glass and does not scratch easy. I've had mine since launch and have yet to scratch it so maybe its true. There is a Rom in the dev section that has touchwhiz removed. It's pretty sweet.
If your having issues with the buttons then u might need to exchange it

Don't buy into this Gorilla Glass pipe dream. The technology is already showing it's true colors. The iPhone 4 is the most prone to scratching of any of the iPhone models, both front and back are Gorilla Glass. My and many others Captivate scratched in my pocket by itself in the first week.
Just use google and search "iphone 4 screen scratch" and "captivate screen scratch".
Get a screen protector or regret it later. Gorilla Glass is supposed to have a high tensile strength. That will keep it from shattering, not scratching. On that front... It's no different than regular glass.
Thank you all.
Can anyone confirm that the touch button sensitivity is software controlled? That will give me hope that some day we will be able to increase the sensitivity of the four buttons at the bottom of the phone.
I would love to keep this phone if the "back" button can be made more sensitive to touch.

1. I've never had a problem with the Back button, i'm not sure why you're having so many problems. It is quite responsive, maybe system lag is why you're having this problem of unresponsiveness? If this is the case then maybe you need to root the device and apply the lagfix. Touchwiz is very sucky and bogs the phone down and can very possibly be the culprit here.
2. This may very possibly be network related. AT&T sucks in my area and the phone averages 2 bars indoors for me. Outdoors is another story. As to the keypad greying out, i've never had that occur.
3. I agree on the touchwiz thing. It's not necessary and slows the phone down badly. It is something that's in dire need to be removed. I've attempted eugene's Vibrant/Captivate Rom, which is coming along nicely. However, it's not to the point where I want to keep it. It fixes quite a few problems with lag as it removes almost all of touchwiz. You have to be comfortable with messing around with modding the phone to accomplish this, as well as rooting it.
If you can manage to keep the phone and possibly try to mod it or perhaps wait for Froyo, which might address some of these issues you'd be well to do so. The Captivate is an excellent device all around.
bump. I have this very same problem plus. no 3 button combo to go into recovery plus I run ubuntu on my computer. Can anyone confirm if this is solved with a custom rom/kernel? I really like the captivate in stock, I think I will like it better with a custom ROM so if anyone knows of any rom or fix for this please let me know. there doesn't seem to be too much info on the forum on this. Thanks

Cognition is really nice, it's got a stock feel with crap taken out and good stuff put in.
You can just google 3 button combo, there are multiple methods. MobileTech Videos has a video guide on how to do it, but I can't give the link out due to an issue with promoting sales of a jig.
Yes actually I found a post with a Fix for the 3 button combo. But the capacitive button sensitivity is still low, specially the back button is a hit and miss. and the phisical layout doesn't help either. My girlfriend has a vibrant and the capacitive buttons are supersensitive. Is this a hardware problem?

Have you flashed Cognition or another ROM? There's no way to tell if it's an actual problem with the handset or just some funky software screwup on your stock ROM until you do that.
I know that mine sometimes "skips" when on stock 2.1(for all the 10 seconds it's on there), but that's due to lag because it's such a ****ty ROM. Once I have a custom one flashed it's fine.
Normally I'm active on xda and ac forums but you guys are definitely where I come for help and help I need. I got my TBolt last Friday(coming from an EVO) and am on my 4th replacement. Before I get flamed, first 3 all had serious issues. #1- no backlight on capacitive buttons what so ever. #2- screen separated from housing on bottom left hand corner, enough to easily stick a credit card under the display. #3- they replaced #2 with a USED TB. It had quite a large scratch on the bezel running into the display. I wasn't keeping it for any reason and they did give me a hard time but I honestly was gonna cancel all 4 brand new lines and return all 4 handsets so the store did look at it and agree I was given a return by accident. TBolt #4 is in 100% pristine shape. No light leak, separated display, poorly lit buttons, etc. plus the replacements all had a $10 screen protector on them so I lost money. #4 also has a $20 zagg so definitely happy with my device finally. The one issue(if its an issue) is the lack of haptic feedback in the browser. When I hit the back button I get no feedback. I know its happening in other apps but I can't remember which. Anyone else experiencing this issue?
Just to cover the obvious, you do have "Vibrate feedback" selected in the Setttings/Sound settings menu, right?
It works as expected for me after checking that box, but the vibration is so slight it's barely noticeable. I suspect if I weren't looking for/expecting it, I'd have missed it.
Try cycling that checkbox, also, try with and without "Audible selection" checked.

This is why I love you guys lol. I guess wiping the phone reset some settings that were enabled out of the box. One being haptic feedback for screen presses. Thanks so much, saved me from loosing my mind because I knew it worked when I first got the device.
Does anyone else have loose home button on their phone? It makes noises when you lightly tap on it and doesn't sound too good. I've also went to the T-Mobile store today and noticed my home button is more flush than the both display models they had. Anyone else face the same issue?

If it feels off go in and have them pull out a brand new one. When there in store. If yours feels off, have it replaced! I do this with any new phone. I tediously inspect it. If I think something feels off I have them show me a new one and compare. That way I can show them right then and there, this is why you're going to give me another phone lol

I have a feeling my front glass is slightly misaligned. Will be checking the store model to make sure, as the corner by the back button seems a bit sunken in. The frame definitely comes up over the glass a little.
I was just in the Samsung Experience Store and noticed that of the four regular S6s they had, three had loose homebuttons. The Edges seemed fine though.
My t mobile version is a bit loose as well. It feels like a minor issue but it is pretty annoying....
I picked up my S6 this morning and have noticed that a light tap on the home button makes a noise. It's annoying and it makes an otherwise solid feeling, quality phone feel cheap. I guess I'll try taking it back to see if I can get another one that doesn't have this issue.
The frame is suppose to slightly overlap the screen by the way
I actually returned my T mobile version for another, and the other has the exact same loose button
Well i noticed it after you guys wrote about it here. I have a S6 32Gig White, a friend has a S6 64gig Black version, i checked his S6 and he doesn't have this issue.
But honestly, it is not like i tap on the button all the time, you can only hear it if you slightly tap on it. If you fully press it, you don't even hear it. It is also not like it makes any sounds when moving the phone, therefore i am not going through all the pain to get this replaced just to receive another one with a loose button

Yeah, if I didn't have this Edge without the issue it might not bother me so much
I went back to the T-Mo store and their display model had it. One of the guys opened another one up for me and it too was affected. I ended up walking out with the phone I had. Not gonna make them open a bunch of boxes until they find one that doesn't. At this point the ratio makes it seem like the loose button is normal and any that aren't are the odd ones. Ah well.

That's unfortunate. Perhaps I'll keep mine for a while and deal with it then swap? Wait on a different production run or something.

I guess...
Well i was wrong about it not bothering me It started annoying me after you guys wrote about it...
I went to a T-Mobile store to check if the devices had the same problem, and yes 2 of them had, 1 did not...
Dunno if it is worth to send it back now and wait up to 6 days to receive a replacement that has probably the same issue -.-
P.s. After pressing the button down very hard a few times, the right side stopped making noises, the mid now also seems to be fine, it can only be heared if touching the very left side of the button...
Same issue here. The left side of the home button rattles a little bit when i press lightly on it. Should i exchange or is it normal?

Does it bug you?
On my third t mobile version, all three with loose buttons.
I'm coming a OnePlus 9 and I'm noticing that the screen is far too sensitive on my P7P. For example, when I click on a notification banner, it thinks I'm long pressing and presents me with the options to "Silent," "Default," and "Priority" the banner notification. I've also noticed when I swipe left or right to go back, it will count it as double as the haptic feedback is felt twice.
I didn't know until after purchasing that Pixels were notorious for having bad finger print scanners. This one is worse that my OP9. I have a screen protector to put on still, perhaps it will make it just right at that point.
Well, the finger print scanner is even worse than on Oneplus Nord. And I also have accidental long presses. I am actually quite disappointed with the phone.
One more thing that I dislike is how the navigation buttons have gaps between them. I constantly tap on those gaps and nothing happens. And if you use gestures, swiping to go back conflicts with swiping to open the side menu in apps.
I was hoping that this device was going to keep me happier than my OP9, oh well. it's still an early release. Hopefully it gets better with firmware upgrades. OP has gone down hill and that's why I'm here. If this fails, I'm going to submit to iOS (wait, did I just say that?!)
I did just put a screen protector on. I'm hoping that will kill some of the sensitivity. I went with the Milomdoi from Amazon. It was the best out of the 3 or 4 I ordered (sent back the ones I didn't did like). Installed pretty easy... despit the one small dust spec I missed in the far right corner. It'll be OK. The case almost covers it up. I'll report back if the screen protector improves the touch at all. I not hopeful though haha
You both might have some bad displays, my fingerprint scanner is far better and faster on the Pixel 7 pro than my OnePlus 9 Pro. I don't recall any issue with the touch sensitivity so far.

Just when you thought you scoured the all device's settings. I'll give this a shot and see what it does (so far so good). Thanks!
I re-registered my fingerprints too. Hopefully that will improve recognition.
On a same note, could someone please tell me if this is normal: https://giphy.com/gifs/COEoRqIfJdhpWTxoKC
When I adjust the brightness and leave the touch input for a bit, the slider goes all over the place. It's pretty annoying and doesn't seem that the slider should act this way.

The reason you didn't notice is that like almost everyone, you don't let your finger linger on the slider, but slide it to where you want it and let go

Now tap and hold is too long when on medium. Why wouldn't they have this adjustable in ms instead of three preset options.
The fingerprint reader has been perfect for me (so much better than on the 6 Pro) but I agree about the screen sensitivity. It's too sensitive.

Absolutely zero issues with the fingerprint reader here, I find it just as reliable and even quicker than my S21 Ultra and that is with a protector.
I suggest it's either a bad screen protector install (air bubbles around the fingerprint area would cause havoc with it) or maybe it's just not a good protector for use with an optical scanner.
