[Q] Sony Xperia S or Sony xperia SP??

Hello everyone, i want to buy a new smartphone and i'm really confused. After searching a lot (i mean a lot!) , i narrowed down my choice to these two,i.e, sony xperia s and upcoming sony xperia sp (my budget is not that high for those fancy s3,s4 or htc one). Now, i'm confused more than before that which one should i go for, i could really use some advice from the experts out here (yeah noob here :silly: ). And please keep the topic to these two only, don't wanna go to a hospital 'cause of serious pain in head .
I am in the same boat as you because I considered upgrading but at the same time don't have the necessary budget. Between the two though choice becomes do you want 4G support, upgraded bluetooth and other features such as NFC and the new GPS system (GLONASS). I am personally waiting for the Xperia SP to come out so I can compare the two in my hand. Alternatively I might settle for the Xperia T as a midpoint of the two.
What do you think?

Yeah, really confused between the two. I live in New delhi, India , so 4g does not really matter for me (not available here). I don't care much about upgraded bluetooth as i don't use it very often but still nice to have a newer version . NFC, oh yes , i would love to try it, but i think it's available with both of them, isn't it?? .
Umm idk much about that new gps system but i would like to know about it .
I'm also waiting for XSP to release here (probably on 24apr) and get my hands on it in a nearby store and also waiting for the jelly bean update for the XS and see what it has to offer .
What i am confused about is should i go for the new hardware or the old one, because i don't think it won't matter much since both phones are dual cores. Yeah i know i know, there is a big difference between the two phones in benchmarks , but i don't think it will matter much in real daily life usage , like messaging , social sites, browsing, watching videos and a little gaming . Or will it??
Also, i'm more comfortable with 4.3 inch screen than a 4.6 inch one , don't ask why :cyclops: but i really like the power button placement in the XSP . OH GOSH I'M SO CONFUSED .

NFC will have more features on the XSP compared to XS since it will have updated support through Jellybean OS.
GLONASS allows for a quicker and more accurate GPS detection through the phone and is much more reliable than the older system.
I agree benchmarks aren't important unless you are a power user and do lots of intense gaming and other applications. I also have an inclination to a slightly smaller screen but if the phone is worth it can make an exception
Overall if you want the smoothest system your best bet would be to use a custom rom like CyanogenMod or another version on your phone. Stock Sony ICS is not that great in any case. That way you can remove a lot of the unnecessary apps. I do believe there are stable versions of jellybean 4.2.2 for the XS also on the forums here on XDA :good:
An improvement that I am looking forward to is the STAMINA mode on XSP which should double battery life at least. Can read about it online through Sony website or online previews regarding the phone.
I think best thing is wait another week or two and play with both phones then make a decision. You have waited this long after all

hmm okay....yup i'm not that into hardcore gaming on my phone, have my pc for that . I rarely Play games on my phone, the ones i play are those small games like cut the rope , trial xtreme , cogs ,etc nothing like gta or those fancy gameloft games . I mostly am concerned about the battery life of the phone because usually 3g is like always on for me, and texting all day with friends on whatsapp , FB , etc.. So XSP's bigger battery is really what's making me buy that phone (other features as well ) , don't wanna carry a charger with me all the time :silly: and also i love that notification transparent strip of the XSP...whereas XS has better camera and more pixels coz of the 4.3 inch screen rather than 4.6 . I Also read over the internet that stock ics of XS is bit laggy so let's see what jelly bean update does :fingers-crossed: , or there will custom roms here as usual :highfive: .
All i can do is wait for it to release . Btw does 4.6 or 4.3 inch really make that much difference in size and both screens are same right, i mean tft?? Sorry i am a complete noob here...
And Ohh XT is not available here in India, So don't have that option :'(

I am confused between the two because of the camera performance . But I would suggest you to Xperia SP if its under your budget , because its probably the best midrange device in the market now , even beats previous years quad core devices ( s3,one-x ..) in terms of performance . Just wait for the camera review of SP because some early reviews say that the camera performance is poor than the rest of features it gives . And if camera is not a ground breaker for you then no doubts you should go and buy it , so far it looks a promising device . Xperia S probably wont get Android 5 , but the chances of SP getting it is more .If the camera is decent on final units then SP is the best device to buy .
edit- you also get whopping 2370 mAh battery

Yeah , you are right about the camera of XSP , the review i saw here was also saying that the camera of the XSP is not that good as expected :
http://asia.cnet.com/product/sony-xperia-sp-46728910.htm
It's an early review , so i'll wait for some more reviews to know about the camera quality. It's a real shame that considering the price of the phone we don't get a good camera , but won't jump onto conclusions yet!:fingers-crossed:
XS took so long to get jelly bean (still not updated yet) , so yea you can be right that it won't get Android 5( limepie?? ) and XSP probably will as it is newer phone but , in case of sony there is a big BUT , we have seen how late sony releases the android upgrade on it's phones .
Also, what about the viewing angles of the screen ?? i have read that they are pretty bad on both handsets...:silly:

Does viewing angle matter? If someone is looking at it they we won't be holding the screen at a sharp angle so they can't see the whole picture
I think that is an unnecessary point of contention. If anything I want a smaller viewing angle so when I am on the bus or something I don't have someone else peeking at my screen. I prefer a bit of privacy

I dont know if viewing angles is deal breaker . We all see the phone from front most of the times , i dont know why reviews compare the viewing angles . The normal viewing display will be great as its sony device with bravia engine 2 . Now just wait for a full review by some reputed websites . Then go and see the device on a local store , because you are paying this much amount so you should do research so that u dont regret it later . I am doing the same . I will wait for a month until i get in a college and then decide what i am gonna buy ,for me things will be clear till that ( it will also make me clear that how many people will actually buy it and how good community it will have on xda ) . If you cant wait then wait for camera samples of final retail units , if you are satisfied with camera then its the best device out there (there seems no issues with anything else ) .Otherwise You totally get value for money in SP , no doubts and it is future proof. BTW it depends on how you use your device , if you are not going to use this much performance then frankly telling you that you should not waste money on this . If you use a phone just for normal things then xperia s/sl is also good when it gets JB . :good:
Hmm you both are right, mostly seeing the screen from the front , but when you are with someone or some friends and want to share a video with them then might be a problem....but that shouldn't be much of a problem, stupid of me to bring that question .
XS has a low battery life btw which really makes me don't wanna buy it , i am so much frustrated with my current phones battery life ( wildfire s LOL ) which i just want to throw in a sewer .

I own a xperia s,if u need a good camera go for xperia s.its really fast but the official update is buggy and there are no jb custom roms with full hd recording.if ics is okay,go with xperia s

[Q] Time I upgrade my Galaxy S3

Hey guys,
I'm needing to upgrade my Galaxy S3, and I've been waiting for the specs for the Nexus 6 and a few others to be released but it seems to be at the point that I must make a choice and pre-order or order one.
Was hoping I could have some user input, I've read through threads and comparisons on all of them, but unfortunately I'm not sure.
I don't mind a phone being 6 inches, I do have quite large hands as it is, and price point doesn't bother me much, anything below $1500 outright (just in case there are phones I've not heard of that are overpriced but awesome)
It's highly likely I'll root the device and possibly install Cyanogenmod on it, depends on functionality and how much I like the standard UI and functions/features/what I lose switching to Cyanogenmod
My S3 is running Temaseks ROM on it.
I put a poll up to make it easier than posting, if I've left out a phone, or would suggest waiting for something else to be released (I don't want to wait until December, my S3 won't last that long) please put that down.
Thanks beforehand for the assistance.
edit - I do hope this was the correct sub-forum to post this on...
I've voted for the M8
I think that, even thou the nexus 6 has just came out, the M8 is nicer to look and to "feel"
it has the right ratio between height and width
that's just the "outside" comment
as for specifics i think that HTC's are stronger (aluminum) and better build and finished.
Cheers!

And he will die like this one, only slower . Cant believe this hardware and this phone gone dead in such a disgraceful way, its beyond my line of understanding . Phones which have 10x weaker hardware are still developed in so large scale , but this phone not . I refuse to understand that. If someone can show me how to build CM roms for this phone or even guide me in some way , i would do it without thinking. This phone is even more powerfull than fu***** G3 for God sake, htc m8 ( i got 42k on antutu with gp2 and m8 38k) ....just please some revive this development or show us how .
@milance92 I completely understand you. This phone is really like the forgotten one. I just can't understand that none of the developers is interested in this awesome piece of hardware. It's true that it's working great on stock firmware but I can't imagine what would be like to run some well optimised and polished custom ROM. Maybe with G3 or G4 apps and options for example. For now I'm satisifed that I even succeeded in rooting this phone on latest 5.0.1 (SAE) firmware and to be able to use some of my favourite apps with roots privilegies...
There are some custom ROM-s on lgviet.com but I don't even want to bother with something that looks half finished and that is not well optimised and bugfree...

I just bought this phone last night, for a backup and gaming device (I had the new G4 just for 1 month). The G4 is good but its battery is not. The G Pro 2 is still a powerful phone and its price now so good. I feel sorry for my G4, if I know there will be a V10 then I will not buy the G4 as the V10 has all the advantage of G4 about camera plus a otns of better things: 4GB ram, bigger screen, 2 screens, better design, last longer materials...

Yes, there is some custom ROM's on lgviet but like u said they are all (more or less) bugy and unstable, and by all means 60-80% uncompatible with xposed which i use a lot . Battery life on this device is insane, i had note 3 , which could not keep up whole day with heavy usage, when this phone shined as a sun in that matter, both devices where new. But now i am more determined than ever to compile my own ROM for this phone , and ordered today second PC on which i can do such a work under Ubuntu ofc, not Windows....when its done i will make a post here on XDA . I have D838 model of the device, so i will start developing for that model.

I wouldn't say, that development was ever alive here.
When I bought this device, I had to order it from another country, as they had none in Denmark.
Maybe LG just produced too much G2, and they wanted to push that device. But my main point is, that it was not sold in many markets, kinda few people bought it, and that's why there are very few developers working on this device.
I'm on 3rd semester in computer sciencec. I learn Java. I would be happy to help you with CM
I owned the device before. I switched to another one because it lacked development. Hardly I can understand why this great piece of hardware failed to get the attention it deserved.
not yet!!

Absolutely like "the forgotten one"! I bought the F350S from Ebay...I find it very powerful and aesthetically pleasing.....but forget about trying to update it's ROM. Very limited choices.

I bought this phone for its hardware configurations and was expecting a better big support from developers. Even my earlier Samsung galaxy range devices got many custom roms. But this is really saddening to see lack of support for this device..

Thinking about trading my S6 Edge for a Ascend Mate 7

I'm deciding if I should make the trade. The main reason is the battery. I found the S6 Edge battery is not enough for me (getting 3 SOT max and it does not last more than 10 hours). So I want to install a Stock ROM on it (is it possible?) and have "infinite" battery life with a good phone.
Any feedbacks on this decision?
Go for P8 Max. It also has 6inch screen, 4000mAh and 16mp camera. The specs are better than Mate 7.
I admit Mate 7 is a good phone but why settle for an old model when there is a new one. Plus, P8 Max has a more updated software, and can be upgraded to Marshmallow in the future.

The only advice I can think of is that if you like custom roms and rooting then you can't go wrong with samsung phones, i had a note 2 for 3 yrs and then got a mate 7 and i am a bit sorry as trying to root the phone has been a nightmare and i am VERY worried about bricking this phone..
the note 2 is ALMOST impossible to brick and the support for samsung is brilliant on this forum where as the mate even after one year is still iffy.
please don't get me wrong the Mate 7 is a fantastic phone but i am still very uncomfortable to root it as there are SO may opinions and different ways ... (
Mine runs rock solid rooted, still on kitkat.
Rooting is the best for it as you can strip out the google bloat from /system/app.
I've kept most of the Huawei extras but the launcher is rubbish and I installed Smart Launcher Pro. I also installed Viper4Android for awesome sound, poweramp for quality music playback UE. For convenience of screen use, kinscreen, and to help the battery and keep data use under control, leandroid. I also flashed in the Xperia kitkat keyboard through CWM and removed google keyboard.
An older version of xposed is installed with some modules.
All up, it runs well, battery lasts well and it's set up to suit me better. The hardware is good for the price. Connectivity is great.
Apart from the poor Huawei launcher, the Huawei software is actually quite good and even has built in tools to manage permission and memory residence.
The launcher is no big deal when you can just install another and set it as default even if not rooted.
Happy I got mine.
Not for the Mate 7. I have had nothing with issues with the screen on mine. Replaced 2 times by service center. There were lines across the screen that were brighter than the rest of the screen. Got the S6 a week ago.

i agree, while i love the build quality of the mate 7 i cant stand the software. i "upgraded" from a nexus 5 and it just isnt the same. if the mate 7 came with a snapdragon soc rather than the huaweis proprietary soc it would truly be the best phone around. i suggest you wait, zte and other Chinese manufactures will be coming out with snapdragon 820 phablets this year.

What do you find so annoying about the software? I quite like the look and feel, very very stable and in my case it has even made up for the urge I normally have to flash roms, simply because there is no need. I appreciate that some may have had issues with the device but I guess you'll find that with every other device on the market.
I've had samsungs for quite a while before switching to the mate 7 and to be honest after so many years I got tired of Touchwiz with degrading performance or a CM alternative with poorer camera quality.
Instead of flashing one ROM after the other I find myself spending more time using the device enjoying its massive 6" screen [emoji1]

i find it annoying that i cant fully control what i do with my phone. on my nexus 5 i was able to do many things that i now see is not possible with my mate7. yes, i as well love the massive screen but after playing with a few nexus 6p's i have become very jealous. this is how the mate 7 should be. all custom ui stuff should be an optional addon "feature". what makes things worse is that companies spend alot of time building this stuff which many often end up not liking.
look at motorola and sony. they have converted to damn near stock android. whatever customization is present fits nicely into aosp android. last night i installed the stock firmware for my mate 7 (B328) and its honestly..... meh! huawei really bastardized what is the best visual android update. they even managed to completely screw up the recent apps view. huawei should really consider this.
for now im just going to get over it and keep using my mate 7 as is. not fully happy but whatever. thankfully there will be a few full metal phablets with snapdragon 820 chips being released this year. i cant wait!

True, the Nexus 6p is very nice with an even better screen, although tiny smaller.

Just switched my mate 7 out for a Nexus 6p - like many people on this thread while I thought the hardware was great (especially the battery life!), the iffy software and half assed updates got to me in the end (I came to the mate from a Nexus 5).
The 6p is spot on - shows what huawei can do when running Android as its meant to be. Battery life not so good as the mate 7, but plenty good enough. If you are coming from a high end phone like an s6 edge I'd say the 6p would be a better bet. As regards screen size... I'm not really noticing any reduction in what I can see on the 6p, but going down to 5.7 with a slim width does really help with holding the phone one handed.
I sold my note 5 and for the huawei mate 7, it hasn't arrived yet...I paid 250 for it, however I'm a tad concerned now , have I made a unwise decision .I did it so I could give huawei a chance and I'm seeing and hearing negatives.

Well, all phones have their negative sides. I love this phone because of the big screen and long battery life. It has a decent camera. It doesnt lag when playing games.
Give it a chance and I hope you will love this phone too. If ever your Mate 7 still runs on KK just leave it be. Lots of bugs in LP.

I'm confused ...is the stock lollipop rom buggy ...how can that be lol? Did I jump the gun a bit selling the note 5? Are they're any stable cutom roms you could recommend. I just want it to last me a while and be a wise investment is all...I'm usually fine but this will be my first huawei anything and now a bit ehh lol

To each his own I guess, but Lollipop is running super stable on my Mate 7.
Custom ROMS are not really an option on this device, there's pretty much no development going on, just have a quick look at the development sub forum and you can easily tell there's not so much going on there.
Make sure that if yo need to upgrade your device try following the official path first, allowing the phone to update itself to LP 5.1.1. If for some reason you don't get the updates just make sure you follow the instructions properly to update with an official ROM from Huawei's website and you should be just fine [emoji6]

I did have lollipop running on mine for a while, and to be fair it was OK. However, it did seem to be missing some things that were included in KK - the carrier aggregation toggle, and after a hard reset it lost the motion control gesture settings etc.
Hence my point about it being glitchy. The other things that I found annoying is the EMUI customization made it difficult to access some of the underlying android screens (such as data usage etc). Also, I found that Google Voice when used in the USA would not dial out with the correct caller ID and number due to Huawei dialer I couldn't change. The other thing is that it is a bit laborious to change ROMs - you've got to download this, incremental update that, flash this to go back to the start etc.....a bit of pain really and one I couldn't really work out why it was necessary - again points to Huawei releasing all sorts of different confusing updates worldwide some of which were not complete.
Don't get me wrong, fundamentally there's nothing wrong with the phone - its just not a good tinkerers phone, nor is is well supported - none of the ported over more 'pure android' roms have yet been able to make the fingerprint sensor operate and can have iffy result with bluetooth etc.

Looks like we are getting Android N

great news to us xt157x users. expect android N in the near future, cannot wait for the custom roms for it !!
I think that is just an opinion piece.
I would agree, this is a "most likely" case and probably largely the article writers opinion, or best personal knowledge (there is little to no reference articles to backup this information linked anywhere in the article). Lenovo doesn't have the best track record here... they said they would have Marshmallow for several device and then backed out later too.
If we get it officially, great, but I'm not holding my breath... if not I am sure our developers here won't let us down.
If Lenorola does, I'd be shocked. The 6.0.1 patch has been out for 246 days and we just got . . . May's security update 2 weeks ago. Motonovo has said 2015 was a rough year for them (support wise) but in the 8 months they've had to make 2016 a smooth year, IMHO, they're still rough and bumpy. Maybe some Gold Bond Ultimate?
I made a joke there, and it's not really funny. Feel free to ignore.
I do believe 6.0.1 is a small patch for phones that needed it. Moto X pure doesn't need it. Read this. http://www.gottabemobile.com/2015/12/16/android-6-0-1-marshmallow-update-whats-new/ .This was for the 6.0.1 update. Then ask yourself if you really needed it. Plus id rather them spend effort on Android N. As far as getting N. We will. When is the question. That would be the last update it will get. But you can cry and switch phones. Good luck on getting updates any faster. Remember you already bought the phone. They would rather you buy a new one.
I agree that we will probably get N. What I don't get is the 6.0.1 update, or lack of it. They released it for the Style 1572, or at least some of them. My understanding was that other than language, the only differences was dual sim and maybe a radio band or two. Otherwise specs show as the exact same. These minor differences should have made any extra development minimal if any was required at all.
I'm not whining about it, but rather just curious as to why it was decided not to give the 1575 the same update. The two models are not like many other ones out there where international versions vs US versions can have larger differences (I.e. old example but take the galaxy s3 with a QC dual core 2gb RAM vs international with Samsung processor quad core and 1gb RAM) and carrier branding creates further issues.
Did you read the link? Im not saying Moto x pure is a perfect phone , it didn't need a 0.0.1 update . Read what it fixed for Moto x play. http://motorola-mobility-en-in.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/110304. Moto x pure already had these when it first rolled out. The fix was minimal and not necessary for them to make. The radio in the Moto x play was bad. They needed a tweak. That was it. You fail to see the relevance of the 6.0.1 patch. Are you having issues with your phone such as camera, radio, serious battery drain? I get a full day with 4.5 hours of screen time. That's almost perfect phone to me. And what ive read that's on par with the majority on this site. So please explain to me what 6.0.1 is going to accomplish for me or any other user for the Moto pure. More emoji's? Give me Nougat.

I browsed through the link material. And you are correct that the features for the most part were already incorporated. Just curious was all. Didn't realize the style had radio issues. Thank you for answering that question. I could care less for emojis as I don't use them.
