µSD card spring in slot broken, no warranty, Help? - Shield Q&A

I got my shield "new" off ebay but because it was from ebay and not a retailer they wont support me with warranty.
I put in a micro sd card for like the 5th time ever into the shield, and it wont pop out any more, i got to fish it out with some needle tweesers. which isn't terrible, but I'd like to fix this. I'm pretty handy with being able to fix most things one way or the other, but I'd like to know what I might be in for if I open the shield up.
Please advise.

If you bought it new then it'll be covered by nvidia. Theres a one year warranty with it....it doesn't matter where you bought it. Just register it through the website.

I already talked to nvidia, and that's what they told me.
The guy I got it from traded in a bunch of games to gamestop for the shield, and then sold it on ebay. Tho he didn't use it he is considered the first owner, which according to nvidia, makes the non transferable warranty void.
So unless some one can advise me on how to bs my way thru nvidia, I need to open it up myself?

You had said before that the guy you bought it from had used it and now you're saying he didn't?

I just got it off ebay, I couldn't tell if he had used it or not, aside from the original box it came it wasn't mint condition.

Did you say that to Nvidia customer service? I would have left that part out. I don't know if I should give tips on how to BS Nvidia though, but I would not have said I got it used or anything that gave that impression.

Heres a guide to open the Shield:

At first sight I would imagine that it's a hard ware defect. I would still flash back to a stock ROM and see if it is still present before looking for a replacement screen. Is it still under warranty?

I bought it on craigslist as a refurbished phone, it looks brand new in the box and the seller haven't used it yet. After using the phone for one week, the line appears. The phone comes with 90 days warranty through ATT, but i'm not the original owner therefore I doubt they'll repair it for me. Do you know where I can buy parts to repair this phone?

I'd still give it a go. Hit them up at 1800-801-1101; won't hurt to try.

I agree. If you say you're not the original owner, you might be able to contact the former owner and ask him to help you with the warranty process.
An lcd isn't cheap at all so you might want to try every other possibility.
i would contact ATT to see if it can be fixed under warranty
LCD+digitizer replacement runs around $150... not to mention if it's something else's fault (faulty graphics chip, bad connector/cable

You don't have to be the original owner to get your warranty covered. I bought a used tilt off ebay a while ago and they honored the warranty and asked no questions if i was original owner or not.
Look up an At&t device support center and if there are no physical marks on the device suggesting that the line is showing up because it was dropped or banged, they'll give you another refurb on the spot. I've been through 4 tilts and when the 4th one broke, they gave me my Fuze.
I called att last week and they told me the phone is still under warranty but since i'm not using att service, they won't repair it for me. I ask one of my buddy that has att service to help me get it fixed but that's a no go either. He called and brought it to the store but they refused the repair. I guess my only option is to fix it myself. Does anyone know if I need the lcd and digitizer or just the lcd by itself?

Q: More like help. SD card slot broken. Doesn't stay inside

So my little girl was playing with the tablet and decided it was fun to pop in and out the sd card. What do you know, it broke! It doesn't stay inside. I have to use a piece of tape to hold it. Anybody else have this issue? I knew having no cover was going to bite me. lol. My Tab 7.0 plus had a little door. I keep it in there and never removed it again.
so this means this is not accident, you probably want to lie to them to return your tf300 and get a new one, but when they check your tablet they probably will figure out this is your fault though

[Q] Well I have a Nexus 5 But...SIM SLOT NOT WORKING

Well I purchased a 32g white Nexus 5 from someone on craigslist today because I thought 420 for the phone without waiting was a good idea. But coming from a 5s i tried using a nano adapter to micro sim to work. But my device wasnt reading any sim cards. It kept saying I had no sim card. I tried multiple micro sims i even used some from my coworkers to no avail. So I had the idea that I was ripped off or I broke the sim holder tray myself by my multiple attempts with the adapter. So i took a flashlight and saw inside of the phone where the phone is and It looks like I damaged one of the antennas =(.. I called google and they told me The original person who bought the phone has to call and transfer ownership sort of? The seller is so convinced it was just working 5 minutes before he sold it to me. So I opened the phone after watching a tear up video of the nexus 5 to see the sim antenna had damage. Does anyone have a idea of what i should do? I tried looking for replacements parts to install but I cant find anything that can be used for my problem. Everything else works on the device so Im stuck. Thanks for reading and wasting your time.
Sorry man, I can imagine how disheartening this would be. I hate to state the obvious here but ALWAYS put your sim in the phone and test it before you buy it. I sell phones on craigslist all the time and I always tell my buyers to make sure they have a sim with them when we do the deal. Not saying this guy ripped you off, but it would have at lest eliminated that possibility. That said, if your first sim didn't work in it, then it would in fact seem you were sold a defective phone. I use a nano to micro adapter in mine and have zero issues. I've had to use them in multiple phones and again, no issues ever.
Did he say he would do the transfer of ownership? Not even sure google would replace it on warranty even if he did, seeing as though it is clearly damage and not a defect, but who knows. It's definitely worth a shot if that's your only option.
Yeah It sucks and I just have to take the loss here and use it as a pocket tablet for games and music, But the seller said before hand that he bought it from another person on Craigslist and that he "couldn't get use to the size" lol. So the transferring of the ownership is not going to work here unless i find the original owner. BTW He did ask me if I wanted to try my sim but i forgot that i had the nano and I checked the phone up and down to exterior.camera, speaker and to see if the software was modified at all and It checked out .

It's possible the nano SIM card adapter damaged the SIM contact pins. There are known issues with mini to micro SIM adapters that do that very same thing. There was several designs of these adapters, and this German made and patented one was the one and only one that most people on the internet recommended. This post is worth a read. http://allaboutwindowsphone.com/features/item/14444_The_Curse_of_Micro_SIM_Adapter.php
It's highly risky using any sort of SIM card adapter in any phone and you have to be super careful with it.
That article lists some places for European buyers to get the good style adapters off Amazon, however if you're in the US the good ones are hard to find.
I had one of the first Firefox OS phones in the U.S.,the ZTE Open. I needed a micro to Mini adapter for it, and ended up getting it online form this shop. They use the same design as the German patented ones and I highly recommend them. Worked great for me. http://microsim-shop.com/
Still doesnt solve your issue with the busted phone, but useful for the future and others to avoid this problem.
FYI I ordered a 32gb Nexus 5 from Google directly last week, ordered on Tuesday 2pm, next day shipping, came to my house Wed at Noon. 22 hours from click to my door. And a friend just ordered one Wednesday and it shipped Thursday night, will most likely be getting it today.. so if people are given a choice I would get it from Google directly since they're shipping fast unless there's a discount involved.

I damaged the regular Sim card tray on my galaxy s 2 skyrocket but was able to use a needle to bend the clip back down. I inserted the adapter into the phone with out a Sim bad idea and when removing it got hung up and took some work to get it out. It worked sort of... Dang cheap adapter had a hole where the pins touched the sim and naturally i tore up that pin. Then a few weeks later I got it repaired in the mall for 50 bucks.

I didn't know that some adapters were prone to causing damage like this. I've been using the Noosy brand ones for years without issue, and all my friends use them to. I have 4 sets of them. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009ABEA7E/ref=oh_details_o09_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Yea. Again it doesn't mean others *will* damage your card, it's just that those tend to be higher quality and tend to not give you as many problems are others. Likewise if you're careful with any of the adapters you should be fine.
When I posted on XDA in some section month ago when looking for a adapter, that's the general conclusion from a few posts that i got.
I would sell it on ebay stating the issue with the sim reader. You will probably still get a fair amount for it from someone who can fix it up.
Umm why not just call LG and do a warranty replacement for the device? They are the original manufacturer so they have to honor the warranty anyways as that's where the warranty lies, not with Google. Google just acts as an intermediary to get the device replaced for you as a customer service but they'll eventually send their broken/damaged devices back to LG for repair anyways.
So just call LG and start the warranty process for the SIM card slot and they'll repair/replace it even if it might take a while to do so.

Thanks, after reading this, I called them up and unfortunately they told me I would have to go through Google for any warranty issues. And they only covered accidental damage that they would have to charge me for. And I asked how long the process would take to get repaired and he told 3-4 weeks

Odd, I could have sworn that others reported sending it to LG directly. I mean what if you bought it from T-Mobile? I guess you'd have to go through T-Mobile then but still... that makes no sense as I don't call Best Buy after 30 days when my TV goes bad within the warranty period.
What about if I bought it as a gift for my friend? I'll have to ask them how to "transfer" it then since I've never had to do that. I sold my Nexus 4 to my friend so now i'm wondering if I need to transfer that one too.
Yeah I definitely would

Why is there so much hate towards the Shield ?

Why is there so much hate towards the Nvidia Shield ? I went to gamestop and see if they have any accessories and the rep replied, why would want to buy accessories ? The Shield is a piece of crap. It's not just the rep but other people have said the same thing. I bought my Shield two days ago and love it.

It does have issue. Wait till the flex cables starts getting bad in another few months. The you can only use it while connected to HDMI. The flex cable is part of the LCD. So when the parts do become available they will be pricey.
So i bought a device for $200 just so it doesn't work in a few months ?

Some have been lucky and have not seen the issue. But others like myself, not so..
Here is a thread on the issue.

You might be one of the lucky ones. Seems to be split about 30% bad and 70% ok.
Why so much hate towards the iPhone when it first got out? Because it is a new, largely misunderstood product and those who call it crap typically never touched it.
The relevant thing about the SHIELD is that the vast majority of its owners seem to love it. The opinion of uninformed people doesn't matter.
Think also that Gamestop might not be very happy at the idea of a device for which you cannot come and buy games at their stores.

How do you come with that estimate?
If you have a problem with the flexi-cable, this is clearly a hardware defect and you should have your unit RMA'd. The feedback on NVIDIA's service has been very good so far.

Did you not even read any of the post I quoted? Based on the ones saying they have issue and the ones saying they do not it is about the split that I said it was. Also if you had read any of the post you would have seen that I bought the unit on Ebay under the impression it had a power problem which would be an easy fix. it however is not a power problem but a flex cable issue.
So since I bought used on ebay for 40 bucks, sending it in for repair or RMA is not an option. I will just wait till parts become available. Or throw it away and count a 40 dollar lose. No big deal for me unlike those who did spend 200+ on it.

Well I have read the posts and my answer was not specifically targeted at you, but first and foremost to the people who spent 200+ on it and specifically to the OP who was worried his unit could stop working after a few months.
It is possible that your unit is a pre-production one that was handed to developers. These are known to be of lesser build quality and had flexi-cable issues. The production units I own since launch do not show this issue so far and I am a quite heavy user.
Just wanted to point out that your estimate of failing units is anything but reliable, so hopefully people won't start making ideas based on it.
What's about those from Europe who get the white screen of death and try to RMA it, will Nvidia accept and repair it on warrenty?
I'd also have to go with the whole "The only people who hate on it are the ones who have never touched it" reason. I bought my Shield to replace my PSP and my HP Touchpad as an emulation/Android gaming device ~couple months ago and I've yet to regret the purchase. The main reason I didn't buy it when it was announced was because I thought the price was a bit too steep, but now that it's (still) $200 I think it's definitely worth it.

As long as you have proof of purchase from the US or Canada then they must honor the warranty regardless of where you live. What they will do is stick you with shipping cost most likely both ways.
I unfortunately do not.
I bought it off a german seller, but maybe I can ask there.

Dead pixel. Having 2nd thoughts.

I've since then requested a return slip via Amazon since I saw a dead pixel last night while watching a video. When the video cut to a black screen, I noticed a tiny little blue dot that was not part of the video. I've confirmed it via some pixel checker apps and it is indeed a dead pixel. This is somewhat an eye opener as to the quality of this phone. I love the phone, but the hardware and even customer support lacks a lot. I've sent numerous emails to customer support with no reply back. And it wasn't even about anything major. It's not just the dead pixel that sparked this thought about returning the phone. As many have said, the tap to wake feature is iffy and only works when it wants.
I'm afraid to try my chances again with this phone, but I've been back to the basics of researching into another device. Gut instincts should've went with the HTC One M9. But the amazing price of this phone was hard to pass up. For anybody who has since returned this phone (and hopefully still lurk this subforum) could you let me know why you returned it and which phone you got to replace it? I might press my luck again and buy it again once I receive my refund. Hoping I get one from another recent batch.
Just an update...I sent back the phone today to Amazon for a full refund and in the meantime I ordered another one just so I can get a replacement quicker rather than having to wait 2-6 days for my refund to show up then order another one, but this time I placed an order through Alcatels main website and during checkout it asked me to select shipping speed and there was Standard, 2 day and 1 day, and for the hell of it I wanted to see how much 1 day shipping was and the total said it was 0.00 and the final cost was still only $249.99 which is the main cost of the phone. I was able to successfully place my order with the 1 day shipping method for 0.00. Not sure if my order will still go through but it will be interesting to see.
You should've stuck with Amazon tho, because if something else happens it easier to go thru Amazon for return then thru Alcatel

Yeah I thought about that after I purchased through Alcatel. Thing is, the phone was shipped via Amazon and it even said so during the checkout process. So if anything goes wrong I might still be able to return it hassle free.

You will not be able to return through Amazon so easily. That's what happened to me when I got this for my wife. We actually had to go through a ton of freaking hoops(according to my wife) to make it happen.
We were supposed to send it straight to alcatel and wait 3 weeks. My wife did her thing (whatever that is) and was able to have them do it through Amazon.

Hmm. Well hopefully this replacement phone won't have any flaws. Right away I noticed the box was in better condition than the last one and it seems the speakers are louder. I must've got one from a new batch because I didn't have to install the startup update since it came preinstalled already. So its a newer device it seems. Oh well. Thanks for your input I'll remember that if I ever have to return it again.

Amazon sucks balls when it comes to getting packages in good condition. Every single thing that I have purchased from them this year so far has come in an extremely damaged box. UPS does not give a crap for sure!!!

I rarely order directly from Amazon's fulfillment just based on their rule of ordering $35 or more for free shipping if I wanted something for only $10. I usually go the third-party route who offer free shipping with reliability. But since Alcatel only uses Amazon's fulfillment center, I had no choice. But yeah my first Idol 3 box was smashed in the corner and had weird water stain marks on the front and sides. I had a feeling it was going to be a defective unit just from the box.
