Hey guys
I have Samsung Galaxy S GT-i9003, and I am using the vold.fstab mod for swapping the internal Sd card for the external. I have every thing running fine. But I noticed a strange problem. When I open applications, it seems like the memory card gets mounted in read-only mode, as when I try to use any file explorer to remove files, it cannot delete until I either use root explorer with mounting as R/W mode, or rebooting the device. If so, things get fixed, but after some use, the problem recurs. Besides, I noticed that while the problem is active, the gallary opens empty with a message showing up "No SD card detected". Otherwise, and even with the problem is active, apps open normally and flawlessly, but unable to write files or delete them. Rebooting always fixes the problem.
Any idea why this is happening?
BTW, the card is very new and healthy, and opens perfectly with card reader on windows, and sends and receives files to and from the computer very fast, and it is 16 GB.
Thank you
I solved that problem after months of research... You see, the problem is corruption... The explanation is very very complicated so I am giving you the things you need to do to fix that read only problem...
(Should be done by steps)
1. Put your sdcard in a card reader (recommended) and use chkdsk /r (if you are using windows)... Or simply go to drive properties and go to error checking, check all the boxes and start scanning until finish... Put your card back to the phone... Check if the problem still persisit... If it still persist, do step 2...
2. Backup all files to your computer... Reboot your phone to recovery mode and use the format sdcard option in the mount and storage menu... Restore all data afterwards.. If it still persist, do step 3..
3. Believe it or not, some files in your sdcard are causing a data corruption (This was my issue).. The only fix for this is to find out what files are corrupted... Mostly, the directory that contains these files are from:
sdcard/Android/
sdcard/Gameloft/
sdcard/data/
sdcard/lost.dir/
Do step 2 first... When attempting to restore the files back to your sdcard, do not include this directories... This will more likely solve your problem...
4. Some tweaks such as sdcard speed tweak and other sdcard related tweaks in init.d folder is causing this problem... Try to boot your phone without them and see if it works....
Thank you very much.
I really have some gameloft games installed and believe it or not, the problem is almost always occurring when I open these games !!
I will try your solution and inform you of the results .
BTW, what if the problem is caused by the files of these games? And what if the problem recurred after restoring these files? Is there a permanent fix for that?
Thank you

It seems like it's SD card problem, although it's new!!
I was playing on a game installed on USB Storage, and all of a sudden the game became unresponsive. I then forced reboot the device, and when restarted, SD became unavailable!! I went to "SD and storage" settings and both SD card and USB storage give "Unavailable". Pressing on "Mount SD card" does not work! Formatting is not working!!
Any suggestions guys??

BTW, I remind you that I am using the vold.fstab mod, gingerbread version. I tried to install another SD from my friend's phone that is working fine in his AT&T Galaxy S i9000, but once done, it gives me "USB Storage damaged" !!!!!!!

Seems like I lost my SD card
It opens normally in Windows, and I could back it up. When I delete all files, it gives that they were deleted. But when I eject it and reinsert it, the files are not removed
Neither formatting nor chkdsk in Windows work
GParted gives "Unable to open /dev/... as read-write (file system read-only)"
Any suggestions??

do you mind to post a screen short by command mount in adb shell?
Actually, I took the memory card back to the reseller, and they changed it for another working one. I just dont know why would all of this happen! The card is new, but there were problems preceding its damage, like the aforementioned problem of read-only!!

Actually, during searching for a solution for my problem, some websites suggested the following:
1- if your card gives you that it is read only, try to use micro SD adapter, and put the lock half way between the locking position and the unlocking one, th en try to perform chkdsk, followed by formatting attempt.
2- if formatting has failed, try to use GParted (bootable live disk is available online and can be downloaded).
Your internal SD will subsequently be recovered once the external is recovered, or simply, put a new external SD of whatever size, and you will regain access to your internal SD, and thats supposing you are using vold.fstab mod
Please let us know of the results , hopefully it works with you

I updated to ICS 4.0.4 (UCLF6) using CWM. I just noticed I am unable to make changes to external_sd. Initially, I was using an app to move installed apps to the external sd. Then after a reboot, I noticed my phone would say those apps were not installed. I also tried copying a file to external_sd using SSH/SCP. Everything shows the file there. In the past, the media scanner would kick in an run right after but it does not run.
Anyhow, after a reboot, the files I just copied are gone as well.
The 2 issues leads me to believe that writing to external_sd is not working.
Anyone else seen this issue? Are you able to write to external_sd and not lose the data after a reboot?
Phone is rooted.
SD card faulty?
You might check to make sure your SD card isn't faulty. I had a similar problem and I couldn't even write files or format the card from a PC. Ended up getting it replaced under warranty.
If you connect to a PC and are able to write files to it then I'm not sure what it could be.
Possibly but very unlikely. I upgraded to ICS from GB using zip files that I placed on the external sd. I suppose I could try and revert back to GB to confirm the external sd still works.
What I will do next is to copy all of the data off the external sd and reformat it from CWM. Let's see if that works.
The odd thing is I am able to write/delete stuff on the external sd. There are no errors in such operations. However, if the phone reboots, then all changes are lost.
It's almost as if the entire external sd were mapped to and running from memory. So you can apply any changes you want but they get lost when the power goes out (ie. reboot).
It seems I'm the only one seeing this issue. Have not heard anyone else seeing the same.
I recently updated my external SD card.
Transfered all the information from the old one to the new one, VIA Windows PC.
Seems like all went fine until I went to one program I thought was installed PPSSPP
Seeing as it wasnt showing up now I tried re-installing it.
Now with the play store it says after downloading that the app
Could not be installed on USB storage or SD card.
Looking at troubleshooting here is what I did so far.
I did look for the file smdl2tmp1 and did not find it anywhere.
Unmounted the SD and rebooted , install of PPSSPP and says same error.
Removed SD and booted , still same error on install.
Dirty Flash Rom.
loaded Rom Toolbox lite and changed app2sd location.
Same error on everything I tried.
The only thing I can come up with is that there is a file that is causing problems that I cannot find where it is.
Any suggestions without doing a full flash and reinstall?
HTC EVO 4g LTE
Carbon Rom 4.4.1
Any thing to help is greatly appreciated
Update tried downloading and installing another app and getting same error , on something that I never installed before.
Update 2. Wiped SD internal and external , did not work. Same error

are you sure the SD card is not fake? for years now, ebay fradulent sellers peddle 4gb cards with a 32gb filesystem. After going over 4gb, the files are just copied to dev/null, but their names are still present in the allocation table
so plug your card to a computer and check it with any flashdrive utility
If you are unable to write in the external sdcard using a file manager too then - back up external card's data, connect to windows pc in usb mass storage mode and format it in fat32 format.
It should fix the issue.

This happened with the origional 32 GB card, then I did put a FAT32 64 GB card in the phone. Moved data over to new card.
It reads in windows fine. and both are fat 32.
Also tried installing without card installed and gave same error.
Titanium backup files will not reload, and even some amazon ones wont, but updates do most of the time.
Another thing I noticed is that my internal is GB for apps, that has about 300 MB left. I think this may have something to do with it so moved data over to SD.
Just tested about 3 restarts and finally went with a paid app, Tried changing default install to auto , internal and SD. didtn really make a difference.

I have recently got a Shield Tablet and I have attempted to add a 128GB to the internal storage but every time I go through the adoption process to bring it into internal, it formats it and results in it being corrupted? The sdcard is brand new.
Tablet is on Marshmallow.

I am having the same issue with the Shield tablet and a 128g sd card. I can use as portable, but trying to adopt as internal storage always returns the "damaged" partition after formatting and starting the moving process. I have tried formatting as ext4 in a PC first as recommended by others to no avail. If anyone is able to get this working please post your fix.
Found the below "Notes" on Nvidia's site. Looks like you'll have to format NTFS on your PC. Some PCs will not allow you that option out of the box, but you can easily change Windows' built-in formatter's options to allow it to format NTFS. The settings are somewhat hidden. To enable it, open up Device Manager and find your micro-SD card, go to the Properties -> Policies tab and then choose "Optimize for performance". Once you've done this, you'll see the NTFS option in the format dialog. Just make sure you "Eject" the card properly, as it seems it's more easily corrupted if not ejected properly.
NOTES:
The ability to move data to SD card is variable for select*apps*and games. Onlyapps*that developers have opted in as moveable to external storage can be moved.
The SHIELD tablet K1 only supports writing to FAT32 and NTFS formatted cards.
64*GB*(or higher) microSD cards – Android does not support the exFAT file system out-of-the-box. Because the standard FAT32 file system does NOT support partitions greater than 32*GB*by default, 64*GB*cards come pre-formatted as exFAT. If you want to use a 64*GB*microSD with the SHIELD tablet K1, it has to be converted to a file system format that is supported by stock Android, which in this case is NTFS. This can be done using a PC.
Android KitKat significantly changes the way applications are allowed to use SD cards. If you use SD Card to store data, please read here for further details."
Hey, I have a similar problem but wanted some opinions.
Received my new K1 and updated to MM and everything is cool. Installed PNY 64GB (10 class) and chose the integrated storage option. The K1 sees the storage and I'm able to move apps to it. My problem is that new apps cannot download due to no storage. The message "whatever app cannot be downloaded. Install a SD CARD......something, something" (sorry, I'm at work).
Will formatting my sd card to FAT32 or NTFS fix this or is there something else wrong? I haven't seen any messages or errors regarding corruption and the sd card is working.
Thanks for any helpful suggestions!
When my 64Gb card was formatted exFat as it came stock, i had the same issue. I'm on LP. I had an almost empty card inserted, other than some mp3 files, and kept getting the message that my storage was full and that i need to delete some apps. I've since formatted it NTFS but i have not checked to see if items are being sent to the external SD. Don't have my tablet with me right now to check, but i wanted to reply to you that you were not alone in seeing the out of room message.

I had my PNY 64GB formatted with exFAT and it worked ok. I've switched to adopted storage and that worked too. But I saw other glitches with internal storage, such as MTP not seeing all files/folders even after reboot. I think "adopted storage" is buggy in general currently. It's also quite slow. Not impressed.
I prefer the Move to SD of Lollipop and Kitkat.
Do we already have a fix/workaround for this? I have a K1 (with the latest OTA 1.2) and 64GV Samsung Evo, formatting the sd card as adoptive storage still says corrupted. I already tried formatting it as Fat32/NTFS but to no avail.
I also couldn't get adopted storage to work.
The best fix for me is not using adopted storage
Instead I use an app called FolderMount which simply creates a symbolic link (is this the correcton term?) on the device's internal storage for whatever folder/file you like. It integrates moving data and managing it as well making the process as easy as it gets though you can of course do the same thing manually as it's using linux operations to do these things.
After you make the symbolic link when apps look for the data in the usual place on internal storage they "see" it but the data is actually whereever the symbolic link points to ie. on your external SD card.
Not found any real workaround for this it makes the tablet a bit of a dud

Caveats: I actually haven't tried it on Marshmallow since I went back to LP however I cannot see any reason that FolderMount will not work as it's using underlying Linux operations to do all the work. But YMMV.
I like this approach since you can move any folder from internal storage to microSD which makes it very flexible. For example you could move:
/Download
/Images/DCIM
/Android/obb
/Android/data
/where you store recorded videos/
and never worry about internal storage again (until you run out of microSD of course lel)
Or whatever you wanted.

FolderMount from the Play Store is not working on MM due to security changes.
There is a beta version that fixes it for some devices. Best to read the official thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192122

There's a problem with cards 64GB and up. I managed to format as internal storage a 32GB one, had no succes with 64 and 128 ones
I couldn't get portable storage to work on the stock MM RoW LTE rom. It works perfectly fine on all the custom roms I've tried (Bliss, Temasek, RR, etc) but none of those have LTE so for me it's either or if I want to use a MM rom. Otherwise, I'd have to use a LP rom for both to work...
I've hit this issue using the RR rom with my 128gb SD. But then if I keep the card in portable mode, I have those permission issues with my emulators. Has anyone got any suggestions or recommendations?
I've so far tried xInternalSD, SDFix and FolderMount with no success and I don't want to do that solution where I have to adjust the permission xml of all my apps. Its micromanagement I don't want.
I just have to use fat32 to get my 128gb card to work.

To work as adopted storage or portable storage? Because mine is working in portable mode, just has write to SD permissions issues for any apps not updated to deal with MM's new OTT security requirements on External SD's (which is most apps to be honest).
Adopted storage, I only tried it once but didn't like it so using portable.

Being Fat32 initially shouldn't have made a difference, because the card is reformatted to ext4 when its made into adopted storage and the tablet just seems incapable of reading an ext4 encrypted SD Card, so it comes up as corrupted.
What brand and model is your 128gb micro sd? And was it the stock rom you did it on? I'm using a Sandisk Ultra myself, and this definately does not work.
It's been awhile so I don't recall all the things I've tried nor the roms. All I know is I got it to it to work once. Think I have a SanDisk something. Just wasn't worth it in the end to me. If you're trying to get it to work, doesn't hurt to try. Stranger things have worked to fix issues in android.
Hey guys,
a few days ago I updated the software of Honor 8 to Android 7.0. Yesterday I bought a micro SD and plugged it into the phone. The card shows up but the system claims its damaged. I used the option to format the SD card but an error occured.
It says:“command '17 volume partition disk:179:192 public' failed with '400 17 Command failed'“
I searched on the internet for fixes and tried to change the the file system of the SD at first. I changed from exFAT to FAT32 and now to ext4 but the same error message occurs every time so this does not seem to be the main problem.
The SD shows up in the DiskInfo-App but it says it is not mounted. So I tried to mount the SD via ADB or Terminal Emulator but without success. On PC there is an IllegalStateException and on my device there is an SecurityException when I try to mount it via console.
Does anyone have a clue or has experienced something similar? Maybe it is because of Android 7.0 or because I dont have enough permissions (root)?
Help much appreciated

From the sound of it you have a corrupt SD card
I'm on android 7 and have no problems with SD card
Is it normal that some SDs dont work on Smartphone and work on PC? I dont want to buy a new one straight-maybe there will be the same problem with a new one. First I would like to try some fixes
It depends on the SD card, the phone, and the reader on PC, but there can be some compatibility issues with faster cards (UHS-3) on older phones. The one I'm using in my Honor 8 now wasn't compatible with my old phone.
I'd suggest deleting the partition manually, re-partitioning it, and formatting it again. I've had some cards get messed up in my Raspberry Pi that were fine afterwards. You can use either Disk Management in Windows (Control Panel {View -> Large Icons} -> Administrative Tools -> Storage -> Disk Management) or something like MiniTool Partition Wizard (the freeware version works fine). Just make sure you delete the SD card's partition(s) and not anything else by mistake.
Thanks for the tips but it didnt work...
A few minutes ago I tested my microSD (Lexar 64GB) in a Galaxy A3 (Android 6.0.1) and it worked just fine. So I would say that the card isnt corrupt. Next up I tested the A3`s microSD (SanDisk 64GB) with my Honor 8 and it didnt even show up in the DiskInfo-App.
Both cards work as usual on the A3 and on PC and both have the same filesystem (exFAT).
I could only imagine that there is a factory defect with the SD-card slot or a software problem (Android 7.0 bug?).
Would a defect slot even show the card and fulfill the ADB and terminal-commands until an Exception occurs?
I dont know but I would trend to say its a software problem because of the permission Exceptions Im getting with the commands on my device.
I believe that Samsung (and Windows after Windows 7) has native support for exFAT. I am not sure that this is the case for the Honor8, but I haven't tried; I'm pretty sure it supports FAT32 though.
You should try to format the SD in FAT32. Not ext4, not ntfs, not exFAT.
On Windows, it doesn't allow you to format an SD in FAT32 if it is bigger than 32GB. Try the instructions here:
http://www.partition-tool.com/resource/manage-partition/format-64gb-sd-card-to-fat32.html

I tried FAT32 with the 64GB card and today with a 4GB card. They all worked on the Galaxy A3. My device always says the card is damaged and it needs to be formated. When the Pop-Up asks me to format the card and I click on it. The progression bar of the formating starts at 20% every time (it doesnt start at 0%) and cancels immediately and shows this kind of error every time:
“command '17 volume partition disk:179:192 public' failed with '400 17 Command failed'
The message keeps popping-up with every properly working card (the underlined numbers change from card to card) and nothing happens. After the error popped up the system doesnt even show that there is a (damaged) card inside. There seems to be a problem with the formating-process and the reading of the cards in general (formated the cards at the PC and in the A3).
How did you get to EMUI 5.0: official OTA, Charles method, TWRP? The first thing I'd try is going back to EMUI 4.1 and seeing if it works there. If it doesn't, it's probably time to contact Honor for a warranty claim. If it does work there, try updating to EMUI 5 again and see if it works this time.
Ich got it via the HiCare-App.
Ich looked Up the official page to rollback to 6.0.1 but a SD Card is needed somehow... Before I use some unofficial ways and may loose my warranty, I think I will ask for replacement.

Thanks for the very detailed answer.
It indeed looks like either a hardware failure or an issue with EMUI 5.0. If you have access to a USB OTG, you can potentially try to see if you can format/read the card from that; if yes, then the problem is with the slot, otherwise you can try to go back to MM using the USB OTG (don't know if it is accessible by the recovery though).
Having said that, as you suggested, I guess it's better for you to do a warranty claim and replace the phone.
I will have a look. I ordered a new one, which should come with Android 6 ex factory and an available Update I guess. I will try to Setup the SD under Android 6 and hope it will still work after the update.
I also have to admit that my phone behaves a little bit strange when there is a not readable/damaged card inside. For some reason there was a huge delay, when I tried to unlock the screen, at times. When I locked it and a second later I pressed the power button again - no special behavior. But when I waited longer (5-10 seconds were enough sometimes), the time to wake up the screen was ridiculously high. It took up to 5 seconds to wake up the screen (vs. less than a second) ,whether I used the fingerprint or the power button.
-> I searched for the problem for quite some time and voila -when I removed the SD the delay was unreproducible gone.
For some reason all my default ringtones are deleted as well but IDC anymore.
In a few days I get my new device and I'll share my experiences.. Thanks for all the advices
PS:If you have a unlock delay, try and remove your SD.
So I got my new device -fresh out of the box.
I plugged my SD card in and again the same error showed up. (At least it mentioned the brand of the damaged SD-card but maybe just because it's android 6)
I plugged in another working card and again the same error...
How high is the chance that two working cards on other devices do not work explicitly on this device?
So can anyone recommend a microSD (working on their Honor8) with 64GB ? (Available on Amazon maybe)
If this doesn't work, I see myself sending back the new device as well....
EDIT:It was definitely a defect of my two devices. I tried out the same SD in an Honor 8 at a public store and it worked just fine...
I have exacly same problem. Phone is getting hot and slow, when the card is inside. Moreover the phone does not read the card.... No idea what to do..
