It could be branded, but, as far as I know, there shouldn't be any difference in rooting. Just the standard method like for every other HTC Desire S.

Well, the Gold Card method is for achieving S-OFF. You can HTC Dev unlock your phone, and then flash a recovery, then a ROM and you'll have root. Keep in mind, you'll need to flash the boot.img from the ROM.zip every time you flash a new ROM. If you want to achieve S-OFF, Gold Card method is required, as far as I know, regardless of the branding.

Well, in order to do a full backup, you'll need to unlock the bootloader and flash a recovery and do a nandroid backup afterwards. But you'll loose your data, when unlocking your phone, so when you'll want to do a backup, there won't be anything to backup. Another way, is to search for apps that don't require root permissions to backup your data. I think, there were some, "MyBackup" and "Helium Backup". Look for both on Play Store.
If you flash official ICS through RUU, you'll use your data too. There is a WWE(World Wide English) RUU for official ICS, which should work even for branded phones.
I'm not 100% sure about that, everything you do, you do it on your own risk.

Last time I've unlocked my bootloader, it was about 10 months ago, and I don't remember really well, but I think, it should clear all your data, not really sure though.
If you've downloaded the WWE RUU from HTC dev, it should work for your phone, regardless the branding.

It was on one of my Gdrive account, easy to find (for me at least ).
As far as I know there's no way to unbrand a phone (I mean changing CID).
What do you exactly want to do ? Just get rid of preinstalled crapware and staying on stock ? If so, like nvardan said, create a goldcard & flash whatever Asia RUU you want.

If you want to revert back to sense 2.1 you need to change your misc_version before flashing RUU, otherwise you will get a bootloader error (check downgrade guide / tacoroot).

Just look in to your devices current <build.prop> file,
there you`ll find the info about the CID`s,
ver.number, etc....
two more interesting locations to check:
1) /system/customize/CID/default.xml
2) /system/customize/MNS/default.xml
If you wouldn`t find right ruu (in case is branded)
just find and read how to make a system dump....
..may also still find something there:

Correct me if I'm wrong but if I was to get a Vodafone UK Sensation could I debrand it via the gold card method using the Europe RUU or is the locked bootloader gonna pose an issue?
+1 for an answer. I saw that little box thingy for generating gold cards and wondered if that would work.
I've been waiting for some info to come up on debranding too. But I didnt know if it would be possible until the unbranded handsets come out.

no you wont, since you'll be changing the bootloader. so no chance of jumping ship from voda branding
Thought as much, waiting for the unbranded handsets to be released then I'll get one of them - assuming it's actually any good
Or get your phone from Vodafone unbranded like me!

You won't be changing the bootloader by unbranding it.
If you get a goldcard to work, you just flash over the shipped HTC stock ROM.
However, I have been having problems with the goldcard method. I can create the card, but the CID check still fails when running the ROM off the card.

No, but I guess it will fail anyway, since the CID check failed for the ROM on the SD card via bootloader, I imagine it will fail via the RUU also.
Does the phone need to be connected via HTC Sync to run an RUU? Or just connected via Charge only?
You can run it in FASTBOOT, going by other HTC handsets

Hmm. Might be worth a try. But I am sure the CID check will fail.
Update: I tried the RUU using the fastboot method, and again, it failed on the CID. Everything was going well until then.

Has there been any progress with this? I'd really like to debrand if poss.

Which SD card are you using?
I tried to de-brand a friend's Hero once using the Goldcard method. Using his 4GB Kingstone didn't work, then I tried my 2GB SanDisk and it went right through.
Hi.
just some questions to get things straight.
My English isn't "DA bomb"
If i could use the GoldCard method i could install every ROM i like right?
But if there's an other ROM i would like to install can you flash it just like that? Or do i need the GoldCard method again?
Sorry for the misunderstanding but my English isn't perfect

Using Goldcard, you can ONLY install signed ROMs, i.e. official ROMs.
But we don't think it works correctly sadly.

I could give it a try... It would be nice to have an official ROM without the Vodafone branding. Thx for clearing it up for me !!
I'm new to HTC, if I wanted to try debranding, where do you get the roms from?
Does the Goldcard-method or other methods work on the sensation ?
Because i bought the sensation yesterday with vodafone branding and i hate it
When the sensation is debranded i can install only official roms in the moment, right ?
I tried again, to flash the HTC 1.27 ROM, and I get a signature error. I get a CID error with the HTC 1.24 ROM. That's using a 2GB Kingston SD card for my goldcard. I'm starting to think it doesn't work
Where did you get the roms from?
I dont even know where to start looking, is there a site like samfirmwares for htc?
EDIT:
nmv just found the thread in the dev section on here.
Hi,
I was wondering how you would root a htc desire s hboot version 2.0.0002 with S-ON. Another question I had was on htcdev where I would like to unlock the bootloader on my phone the 'S' model isn't listed. Would it come under the desire or other phone models? Thanks
take other phone models since its a desire s and not a plain desire.
if you got your bootloader unlocked u need to downgrade the bootloader
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1318919
and continue with
http://revolutionary.io/
i didnt tried anythign of this yet but thats what id like to do with my desire s as soon as i got enough time
if youre happy with s-on you could go for the zergRush thing for temproot right after youre done with unlocking the bootloader with htcdev.
hope its correct. ive just started reading yesterady in here
€ or search for the superoneclick. same thing as the zergRush but much more easier to use

OK Thanks For Your Help
is it dangerous to do this?
im no pro in flashing and all this stuff but as long as you follow the instructions there should not be any prob. if theres any high risk in bricking the device or anything there will be an extra warning i guess.
oh and one big nogo i learned by my friends phone.... never ever pull the battery
and you lose the warranty by unlock with htcdev.
Ok thanks is it reversable when the bootloader has been unlocked? Thanks
I have now unlocked the bootloader so how do i root now?
if you just need root, check this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390496
if u want s-off u need to downgrad the bootloader and go for revolutionary like i posted befor
€ and always edit your post if u need to add something . dont double post like you did
u just can re-lock your bootloader with htcdev but u cant go back to the normal locked. not 100%sure about this

The point of installing a rom is that they can be smoother and more customisable, they also get rid of a lot of the branding **** that comes with the pjone.
As for sim-unlock this has nothing to do with s-off or routing, you can pay to get it unlocked from ebay, Idid it yesterday and it cost me £3.99, so very reasonable.
would this be ok? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UNLOCK-CO...ultDomain_3&hash=item3cc0e2889b#ht_3192wt_952

Looks ok, I used this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Unlock-Co...ssories_RL&hash=item2c611a04e1#ht_2693wt_1344

goldcard allows you to flash RUU files with a different CID to your device.
what would you say is the best rom? Thanks

Based on the cid database provided ..it is called BM network..so anyways.it seems like your phone hasn't been modified a bit..so you'll get ics OTA irrespective of the sim you are using now..if you want ICS OTA of other countries like Europe etc then you need to do first SOFF(which is possible for your HBOOT ) then you need to follow the guide I've provided to rebrand it..you need to rebrand it with cid HTC___001(verify this) which is Europe unbranded cid and it has got ICS ota.so if you rebrand it with the above mentioned cid you'll automatically get ota..the only downside to this is you'll lose SOFF..which is a immense requirement to fully support installing custom roms.

Hello, im new to this forum as registered user, thats my first post, im foreign so im sorry if anyone asked this before, i did search but maybe couldnt find it, well here it goes
My phone was locked to H3G network United Kingdom ... friend of mine bought a Samsung galaxy ACE for 5 quid cos it was with screen lock, anyone i manage to format the phone and get over the screen lock ... then i find out that the phone is locked so i searched in google and find out that i can root the phone and try to find UNLOCK code for free, anyone all done and for free i found unlock code.. so i Though maybe my htc desire S saga will be same so i UNLOCK THE BOOTLOADED and i put on CLockWordMode or something. .. i manage to learn to use it, so here it goes, i tried many many roms, noone is working, some of them get aborted while i try to install them, other r going thru everything ok (install complete) and then i just see the THREE MOBILE LOGO and its not loading anything, or some of them just shows that they load something but thats all.
HOw ever somehow i found saga-lbc-mod-v0.5.4, and its working but it cut off the wifi, cut of the mobile network and signal too, cant use my phone properly but i CANT install any other rom, i tryed to install original RUU OR Any other one but all the time INSTALL IS ABORTED :-sss
all i do is restore and thats all, CAN somebody help me please :-s ?

And as a follow up, removing SIM Lock on the DS is not something you can do for free. XTC-Clip is your friend.

Or do i have to wait (maybe forever...) for the vodafone update? I reallly would like to unbrand the phone (the vodafone logo and other vodefone apps are really annoying...).
I think if this WWE update will go ok, when i received and warning about any vodafone update (because the serial indicates that this phone is a vodafone one) i have to ignore it and only apply only any WWE updates from HTCDEV, rather than that, i thing phone will work ok... but still i am worried about some things like :
- bricking phone with ICS update;
- some things don't work ok with this update because is a branded phone (i chat with HTC support and they told me that some guy complained about WIFI does not work after the ICS update, ... could it be possible, even if the hardware is the same from branded and unbranded phones?;
- possibility to go back to a 2.3.5 rom if i dont like for whatever reason of the ICS of its behavior on this phone; the HTC guy told me that only on the HTC assistance was possible to make it ... dont we just have to run the correct version of the ROM (by the way i don't know which is mine, could you please tell me? Because i seached on the HTCDEV for the right software number (2.10.168.3) and the file to download is a ".gz" file not a .exe one;
Other thing, does this ICS include a PTG (Portugal) language.
I will be forever grateful for all the help / hints you can give me.:good:
Thx in advance.

From what I've heard, the ics update has bugs, that can only be solved with root access. Flashing the ruu should work fine though, but you won't be able to downgrade without unlocking the bootloader to get root access.
For these reasons I would recommend making your phone s-off (see guides in the "general section), and installing a fixed version of the ics update, or whatever custom rom you want. Then you can still go back to the original state, if you want to.
I read somewhere on my downgrade guide that they have successfully debranded their phone using my guide.
