Odin 3 "FAIL! (Auth)" When trying to root... - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hello, this is my first post on an xda forum. I sincerely apologize if this thread has already been made but I have searched for quite a while not just on the xda forums, but everywhere else to try and find a solution, but to no avail. I have been racking my brain and researching for the past few days to try and find out what the problem is with my phone but I can't seem to figure it out. Long story short, I am trying to root my Samsung Galaxy S3 (again) but whenever it gets about halfway in Odin it says "FAIL! (Auth)" and then stops. I rooted my phone about a year ago but never fully understood the point of it so I unrooted it and recently took an interest in rooting so I have been trying again.

This is the string of messages( I think that's what it's called) that I receive when I try and flash a .md5 file onto my phone using Odin.
I apologize if this is a bit jumbled up, I am trying my best to fix this problem and it's quite frustrating. I will accept any helpful tips pointing towards the solution to this problem and will do my best to answer any questions. Any help is appreciated, thank you!

Just making sure. You are trying to flash a VZW Stock image file via Odin using the PDA Section? The PDA Section is VERY IMPORTANT!!!

I finally figured out what was wrong after some more research! My specific phone the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III (SCH-I535), has had some kind of specific restriction that prevents me from flashing certain ROMs or things like that. Upon research I found a ROM that was semi stock, but also included Superuser and I flashed it and everything went perfectly! I learned a lot through all the research and through trial and error though which is great. My phone seems to be working great except for the fact that the internet connection is really weak or just slow, not really sure what happened. Do you have any tips on how to fix this problem? Also any app recommendations? Thanks!

Try an earlier radio? Some people say the Newest radios just do not cut it for them.

Might it be possible for you to expand on any information you have about this semi-stock ROM you found? I'm running into this exact same issue with my new sch-i535.

Well that's a nice workaround but if you do ever decide to return to stock and the latest version of it, use this thread to root it without Odin. Lol I tried rooting through Odin with a method for older versions and made my phone bootloop. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2332825

This works everytime. I recommend flashing the stock Image AND STOCK BOOTCHAIN or recovery won't install. Those are listed at the bottom of the tutorial. If you are on stock just install the stock bootchain

Gentlemen, not everyone issue the same even it may shown the same. You need to provide what rom version you are on and what version you try to flash, do you have recovery already installed, is your bootloader unlocked and rooted and why you need to flash, like you need root, or you bootloop or what????

What version do you have?4.1.2? On Jelly Bean, you need to unlock bootloader first before you flash custom rom or recovery.

Oh no, you haven't research much didn't you. If you already on 4.3, your bootloader is LOCKED PERMANENTLY, meaning you CAN NOT flash recovery or custom rom/kernel. The only thing you can do is root your phone. That's it. Attempt to flash recovery will brick your phone. If your phone stills bootup, then just root it using saferoot found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758 . If your phone is not booting anymore but still get to download mode then go here for solution http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2586319 . If you phone doesn't power on at all go here for solution http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2581166 . Carefully read which one belong to you and slowly and carefully do the right thing. If you have any question just ask.

Wait a minute , I think we went off track. So your phone is working fine with 4.3 and you just want to root the phone? If you just want to root the phone then try this here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
THAT'S IS ALL YOU CAN DO WITH 4.3. You CAN'T DO ANYTHING ELSE and don't even try safestrap....

my phone is already rooted I just wanted to install custom Rom with 4.3 which I now know i can't do

I did some more research and I think I can flash a recovery or rom because i would just need to find a bootloader. Or if i could flash back to stock recovery that would be fine. Is it possible to get kitkat 4.4.2 right now. I know the GT version of gs4 can.

[Q] Download mode after soft-brick, now what?

I searched thoroughly before making this post, but I am a noob at this so I may have missed something relevant. Please don't get mad at me if I did!
Basically: I attempted to flash a custom ROM, intending to use clockwork mod. However, when I got to the step after rooting where you reboot the phone and put it into recovery mode to get into clockwork, I realized that no combination of button presses was working. Yes I know I was a fool not to check first to make sure I could get into recovery mode, but I didn't know and I'm new at this.
It was soft-bricked (stuck at samsung screen), so I got a jig and using that I can now get into download mode ONLY. I have scoured the internet and tried using KIES and Odin to get it working (I don't care if it's with a custom ROM, stock firmware, whatever, I just want a functional phone at this point), but I'm having no luck getting any of the numerous tutorials I've tried to work.
Before it became soft bricked it was running froyo (I believe 2.2, but I'm not positive).
Can someone please walk me through whatever the easiest way is to get functioning firmware of any type onto my phone, or direct me to a tutorial that will help me?
I appreciate any help, VERY MUCH. Thank you in advance.
EDIT: Also, the most recent tutorial I tried was this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853950
But when I run Odin I get this:

Yes, Odin is not working for me. It recognizes my phone, but I can't get it to do anything. I'm not sure if I'm loading the correct firmware or making some other mistake, but thus far I feel like I am following the tutorials I've tried to the letter with no luck.
You do know that the thread above is NOT for this phone?

If you want kj6 stock (latest stock), then run the same one click with kj6 from kies http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1358498
The first click of "flash" writes just the rom, click "flash" after going back into download mode again to get bootloaders.
Then odin kj1 kernel with the odin link from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194032
I'm planning on making an alternative one-click with the kj1 lagfix+cwm kernel with kj6 stock rom soon. So you have one-click to an install with cwm.
EDIT:If you have a problem getting into Download mode, you might want to shop around for a usb jig for the sgs4g. If that doesn't help they also provide unbricking service.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
you can do it.. just keep trying to put ur phone into download mode it happen to me... just keep trying and try different ways of doing it. after awhile i should work.. then odin with kd1 and start back from square one.. i been there if anything pm me.

Am I using the correct files, or am I missing something here? This has been driving me nuts and it is very hard to find the files among so many dead links! If anyone has had a similar experience, or can point me to a forum post I have not yet seen, I would greatly appreciate it. I have been back and forth with this for days and still have a looping boot process and the option of Download Mode.
Thanks!

Very nice to know that this is the SGS4G and NOT the Vibrant! Was stuck on 2.2.1 FW with stock rom, which led me to believe i had the vibrant, but now i have 2.3.6 and couldn't be happier!
Thanks again!

I only wrote the guide. Bhundven is the one to thank.
this has happened to me b4, try force rebooting it and you should see something like incomplete update (...or something like that, was a long time ago) and then try plugging it into your computer and try it again (will automatically b in an alternative download mode) ... just maybe this time b4 flashing try rebooting your computer as well (odin sometimes leaves some processes running for some reason...)
P.S. make sure all drivers r installed properly and in my experience 1-Click Gremlin Remover is the safest/easiest to flash with..
Good Luck!
EDIT: Sorry, just sorta skimmed the page.. didn't realize it was already fixed

Sounds like it's time for a new battery. Is the old one swollen? A quick test is to place it on something flat (like a table) and see if it spins easy.
But my battery is spinning harder.. It is possible my problem is about the OS?

HELP

I am stuck in firmware upgrade encountered an issue. please select recovery mode in kies.
I came from a HTC Vivid. I decided to go back to Samsung and forgot how pain in the ass they are when you make a mistake.
It all started trying to flash CWM on download mode using Odin. I did what I'm suppose to do. Its connected through the com port, only click on PDA and browsed the TAR file. Only checked auto-boot. Started odin and I get a Fail status. After that I am stuck on the firmware upgrade encountered an issue. please select recovery mode in kies.
I tried to go to android recovery but it keeps putting me back on the firmware upgrade issue. Went back on download mode and try to flash the stock rom from AT&T and same thing. I keep getting a failure. I am using OEM samsung data cable.
I am going to use a different computer to do this, but here's the problem now. My phone has died, it keeps saying low battery, cant go on download mode. Will the phone charge even on this state?
Im not sure if battery is used in download mode. I can get into download mode without having a battery. I do know if you bork the recovery on your rocket she will not boot I'm guessing all you need to do is flash a recovery it Odin. Download a fresh copy and try again:thumbup:
Lol and from my experience Sammy phones are a lot easier to recover than HTC:thumbup:.......either way you need to know your crap before ya start
Oh and one more thing. When you see the "firmware update encountered an error" message, your still in download mode:thumbup::thumbup:

Don't think I borked the recovery, I barely bought the phone and its completed stock, not even rooted. If you can show me step by step. That will be awesome. When you say flash a recover it Odin. U mean download the ATT stock rom and flash it through odin? If thats what you mean then I have already done that mentioned above. I still keep getting an error and now the phone is dead and won't even let me go on download mode because it keeps saying battery is low? I tried it without the battery and still won't do it.
I got my guide from Vincom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1652398 and he stated that the battery must have charge or full charge.
I've had bad experience even with my old Galaxy Captivate. I have found it so much easier with my older HTC HD2, Sensation and Vivid. For example if something goes wrong Samsung goes into that firmware upgrade thing issue with kies. HTC does not even do that. There is no download mode in HTC. I guess to everyone's own. Only reason why I have this phone because I only got it for 100 dollars.
EDIT: Ok ill try to flash it again on that fimrware upgrade screen.

Yes, your recovery is borked lol, other wise you phone would boot:thumbup:
The firmware encountered an issue is still DOWNLOAD MODE(plug it in and see for yourself)
I won't give you a step by step
But I will tell you if you trying to root just redownload the cwm recovery.tar and flash it again in odin:thumbup:

Windows automatically installed drivers when I put in the usb cable. I am trying to download kies right now and see if I can backup and restore using their recovery. Do you think that would be a good idea?

Windows won't automatically install the drivers. You need to install then yourself ( like any device), no need for kies(sometimes it conflicts with Odin)

Try the recovery, but you may need a full odin to stock.

Have you tried one of the Odin one click leaked ics ROM's? Should eliminate any possible user error. Not saying that you are doing something incorrectly, but it happens to the best of us.

Sent from my I-727 Skyrocket running an Android version AT&T probably won't give me for another year.
I made a fatal mistake. Since there are so much different type of Galaxy SII. I found out mine was the SGH-1777 not a skyrocket. I don't know much about these galaxy phones so the whole damn time ive been putting in SGH-1727 drivers, files. I really do apologize for this inconvience.

Need help! Stuck at boot before! Now at odin mode!

I tried un-bricking it with the tutorial I found and it just made it worst! Not even I still have my SG2 bricked, now it shows "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again" !!! It happens everytime I turn it off... Yes I read the big red signs with warnings -_-... The thing is I don't know why when I was updating to 4.2.2 through the recovery program (not CWM the other one) it jumped "Missing MD5"!
The only data I have is:
PRODUCT NAME: SGH-I727
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: YES(2 COUNTS) --I DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS--
CURRENT BINARY: CUSTOM
My computer detects the cellphone but when I start Kies it never recognize it! (Well actually it's stuck at connecting with the cellphone...)
I am really desperate! I have this cellphone for just 2 MONTHS! I don't want to lose it please help mee!!!!
I just found out that it was for 2.0.3 and I'm on 4.1.2 !
Help! If anyoene can please! I'm begging you guys!
Follow the attached guide by vincom. You need to use Odin http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26056924
Read through it and if you have questions just post them here and someone will help you. You should be able to get your phone working again.

Looks good. When Odin is finished, boot into the recovery and do a factory reset. Then boot the phone. The first boot will take a long time, 5 minutes. Be patient.

Could have been a bad download.
Glad it's working again.
You obviously used the wrong tar since you have 2 counts of custom binary. You should really read some more before you hard brick the phone.

See, the way you phrased that sentence already says that you haven't read enough..
It's a bit confusing in the beginning when you learn everything for the first time.
JB radios are backwards compatible with ICS and maybe GB roms. GB & ICS radios are intercomatible but won't work with JB roms.
GB & ICS ROMS = GB, ICS and JB radios.
JB ROMS = JB radios only.

Ok, but this is the thing I went on the link to download CM 10.3 which is stable (aparently) and I've followed all the steps with Odin to get the TWRP (I think that's the name) and when I tried to install the CM10.3 .ZIP it said "Missing MD5" and it got stuck. Before I was about to do the install I saw a tutorial that said "Wipe data"... Could that be the problem that caused the boot loop?
